Check both, then look for Focus or Do Not Disturb, delayed delivery, muted chats, and Android background restrictions. The steps below reflect menu guidance reviewed on August 18, 2026; labels can differ by Snapchat release, iOS version, Android version, and phone manufacturer.
Start with this quick check
- Ask a friend to send a new Chat while Snapchat is closed, so you can test delivery rather than an old alert.
- Check that Snapchat notifications are allowed in your phone’s settings.
- In Snapchat, open your profile, tap the gear icon, then tap Notifications. Turn on the types of alerts you want.
- Temporarily turn off Focus or Do Not Disturb. On iPhone, also check whether Snapchat is in Scheduled Summary.
- If the problem affects only a friend, group, or Story, check that conversation’s mute settings or Story notification subscription.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update Snapchat, then fully close and reopen it and restart your phone. Snapchat recommends updating, restarting the app and device, and checking the connection when a feature is not working normally (Snapchat Support).
- If you still receive no alert, clear Snapchat’s cache and send another test message before considering reinstalling.
Use the symptom that best matches what you see: an alert that is missing, delayed, silent, or limited to certain activity can have different causes.
Fix Snapchat notifications on iPhone
Allow Snapchat alerts in iOS
- Open Settings → Notifications → Snapchat.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose where alerts should appear: Lock Screen, Notification Center, and/or Banners.
- Enable Sounds and Badges if you want them. If immediate delivery is available, avoid routing Snapchat to a scheduled summary.
Apple’s notification settings control an app’s alert locations and preview behavior (Apple: Change notification settings on iPhone). If Snapchat is not listed, open the app and check its in-app notification settings; if permission was previously denied, iOS may require you to enable it from Settings.
Check Focus and Do Not Disturb
Open Control Center, tap Focus, and turn off the active mode temporarily. Check Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work, Personal, or Reduce Interruptions if shown. If alerts work only with Focus off, open Settings → Focus, choose the relevant mode, tap Apps, and allow Snapchat if that fits your preferences. Focus can silence or permit app notifications and may be scheduled (Apple: Allow or silence notifications for a Focus on iPhone).

Remove Snapchat from Scheduled Summary
If notifications arrive in a batch instead of when messages arrive, open Settings → Notifications → Scheduled Summary. Turn the summary off temporarily or remove Snapchat from it, then test again. Scheduled Summary intentionally holds selected app notifications until a delivery time (Apple: View and respond to notifications on iPhone).
Separate silent alerts from hidden message previews
If a banner appears without sound, check the iPhone’s silent/ringer state, alert volume, Focus, and Snapchat’s Sounds setting. If the alert appears but its message text does not, open Settings → Notifications → Snapchat → Show Previews and choose the level of detail you want: Always, When Unlocked, or Never. A hidden preview does not necessarily mean notification delivery failed.
If alerts are missing only on Apple Watch
On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app and review its notification settings to see whether Snapchat alerts are mirrored or configured differently. Test with the iPhone locked: notification routing depends on which device is active and the mirroring setup. Fix Snapchat notifications on Android
Allow notifications and check categories
- Open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Snapchat and turn notifications on.
- Open the relevant notification categories and enable the types you want, such as Chats or calls.
- If a category is set to Silent, change it to Alerting if you want sound or a more prominent alert. Check lock-screen, pop-up/banner, vibration, and sound controls where available.
Android can expose separate categories for an app, and labels vary by device (Android Help: Control notifications on Android). Snapchat also notes that some devices require notification permission to be enabled in phone settings before the in-app controls can be managed (Snapchat: Control Snapchat notifications on Android).

Swipe down to Quick Settings and turn off Do Not Disturb. If it switches back on, inspect Settings → Modes → Do Not Disturb for schedules and notification filters. Some older Android versions or manufacturer interfaces use different wording, such as Do Not Disturb preferences. Android Modes can limit interruptions according to schedules and filters (Android Help: Limit interruptions with Modes & Do Not Disturb).

Review background battery and data restrictions
If alerts show up only after you open Snapchat, check Settings → Apps → Snapchat → Battery for an option such as Unrestricted or Allow background activity. Also look under Mobile data & Wi-Fi and allow background data if it is blocked. Manufacturer interfaces may put these controls under battery optimization, sleeping apps, or background usage. Changing restrictions can improve background delivery but may use more battery; it is a diagnostic step, not proof that battery settings caused the problem.
Use Notification History to see whether Android received an alert
If your phone offers it, open Settings → Notifications → Notification history. A Snapchat entry suggests Android received the alert; investigate silent categories, lock-screen presentation, sound, and Do Not Disturb. If there is no entry, revisit permissions, Snapchat’s in-app settings, connectivity, and background restrictions. Notification History is not available on every device (Android Help: Control notifications on Android).
Fix alerts for one friend, group, or Story
Check whether a conversation is muted
If other Snapchat alerts work but one friend or group is quiet, inspect that conversation’s settings rather than changing every phone notification. Press and hold the friend or group chat and look for Chat Settings or notification controls. Re-enable the relevant message or call alerts if they are muted. The exact controls can vary by Snapchat version; group or per-person settings can override what you expect from the app-wide setup.

Turn on Story notifications for selected friends
In Snapchat, tap your profile icon, then the gear icon and Notifications → Manage Story Notifications. Select the friends whose Stories should trigger alerts and tap Done. Story alerts require the friend selection in Snapchat as well as permission for Snapchat notifications in the phone’s settings. Snapchat documents the in-app path for iOS (Snapchat: Control Snapchat notifications on iOS); menu availability can differ by version.

Diagnose by what happens to the alert

Update Snapchat, restart it, and clear its cache
Update the app
On iPhone, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, find pending updates, and tap Update beside Snapchat. On Android, open Google Play Store, search for Snapchat, and tap Update if available. Snapchat’s installation and update guidance also covers the store appropriate to the device (Snapchat: Issues installing or updating Snapchat).
Restart the app and phone
Fully close Snapchat, reopen it, and restart the phone. Then ask for a new test message while the app is closed. Snapchat recommends restarting both the app and device for features that are malfunctioning (Snapchat Support).
Clear Snapchat’s cache
In Snapchat, open your profile and Settings. On iPhone, scroll to Clear Data → Clear Cache and confirm. On Android, tap Clear Cache and then Continue. Snapchat says clearing cache does not delete Memories, Snaps, or Chats (Snapchat: My Snaps won’t send or load). This is less disruptive than logging out or reinstalling.
Check connectivity and possible service issues
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or try another Wi-Fi network. If a VPN, firewall, DNS filter, parental-control app, or workplace network is in use, temporarily test without it; treat this as a diagnostic, not a recommendation to leave protections disabled. Snapchat specifically recommends switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data when a feature is not loading or responding (Snapchat Support).

If many people experience the same failure at once, the cause may be on Snapchat’s side rather than a setting on your phone. This guide does not establish whether Snapchat is experiencing an outage at the moment you read it. Avoid repeatedly resetting local settings until the service issue is resolved; if the failure persists afterward, resume the device checks.
Reinstall only after less disruptive checks
Reinstalling can reset a damaged app state, but it will not fix a phone-level notification block, Focus filter, or network restriction. Before deleting Snapchat:
- Confirm you know your username and password and can access the account’s recovery method.
- Confirm Memories are backed up.
- Expect to grant notification permission again after reinstalling.
- Install only from the official App Store or Google Play Store.
Do not factory-reset the phone or pay for a “notification booster,” cleaner, or third-party Snapchat repair service for this problem. No paid product is needed for the settings checks described here, and a Snapchat+ subscription is not a general repair for push alerts. Its custom notification sounds are a personalization feature, not a fix for operating-system blocks or app faults (Snapchat: What is Snapchat+).
Report a persistent notification problem
If a new test message still does not trigger the expected alert after the settings, update, restart, cache, and connectivity checks, report the issue in Snapchat: open your profile, tap the gear icon, then look under Support and Safety or App & Privacy for Bugs and Suggestions → Report a Bug. The section name can vary by layout (Snapchat Support help topic).
Include the phone model, operating-system and Snapchat versions, which alert type fails, whether the alert appears after opening Snapchat, whether it works on Wi-Fi or mobile data, and when the problem began. A screenshot or screen recording can help explain what the phone displays. Snapchat also recommends reporting a feature that remains broken after its basic troubleshooting steps (Snapchat Support).
