These checks can help distinguish a large file or local network bottleneck from a possible plan or line issue, but none alone proves that BSNL is at fault.
Is the upload slow, or is YouTube still processing the video?
First identify which stage is taking time. While the file is transferring to YouTube, the upload percentage or progress indicator advances. After transfer finishes, YouTube may still be processing the video, including higher-resolution versions. Processing time is not evidence of a slow BSNL connection.

YouTube says upload time can range from minutes to hours depending on file size, bandwidth, upload traffic, and other factors; higher-quality videos take longer. A larger file will generally take longer than a smaller one at the same sustained upload rate. YouTube’s help page also says, “Slow or unstable internet connection is one of the main causes of slow uploads.” YouTube’s guidance for videos stuck during upload explains the distinction and the factors that affect transfer time.

Uploading a video uses outbound bandwidth. A plan’s advertised download rate does not establish its upload rate unless the exact plan terms specify both. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth, so a download speed test or plan headline alone cannot tell you how quickly a video will upload. YouTube’s live encoder network requirements explain the difference between inbound and outbound bandwidth.

There is no single upload speed that can be stated here for every BSNL broadband customer: service type, plan, location, and any usage threshold can matter. Check the terms for your own connection rather than applying a rate from a different city, reseller, historic plan sheet, or service listing.
Run a controlled upload-speed check
- Record a baseline. Run an internet speed test and note the upload result, the time, and whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Repeat the test rather than relying on one reading. YouTube recommends checking connection speed when uploads are slow. A speed-test result is a snapshot; it does not guarantee the same sustained rate on the route to YouTube.
- Pause competing traffic. Temporarily stop cloud backups, file transfers, other video uploads, and heavy use by other household devices. Test again with one device using the connection. YouTube notes that sharing a network can limit an individual connection and that upload traffic can rise at peak times.
- Compare a quieter time. Repeat the same check later, keeping the device and test method as consistent as possible. YouTube says an ISP may see upload-traffic spikes at peak hours, making video uploads take longer. A time-of-day change is a clue, not proof of the source of congestion.
For scale only, a 2018 YouTube Community response by a TeamYouTube Community Manager gave the example that 1 GB at 512 kbps uplink could take over four hours. That is an illustration, not a current service guarantee or a universal upload-time calculator. Actual transfer time varies with sustained upload speed and connection stability.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet before changing equipment
If you can, connect the computer directly to the router or ONT with Ethernet and repeat the same speed test. Check that both devices have compatible Ethernet ports. YouTube’s system-requirements guidance says a wired connection instead of wireless may help, but it does not promise that a cable will make every video upload faster. YouTube system requirements
- If Ethernet is substantially faster or steadier than Wi-Fi, investigate the local wireless link: signal strength, distance from the router, interference, or the device’s Wi-Fi connection.
- If Wi-Fi and Ethernet are similarly slow, that makes a Wi-Fi-only problem less likely, but does not identify a specific fault in BSNL’s network or your equipment.
- If you need a cable for this comparison, a compatible Ethernet cable is an optional diagnostic accessory, not a guaranteed cure. Do not replace the router or fibre ONT without evidence that it is defective or is the measured bottleneck.
Check the video file and recover an interrupted upload
YouTube identifies a video’s file type and size as factors in upload duration and recommends using its supported formats. Higher-quality footage, including 4K, takes longer to upload than 1080p. A smaller export may transfer sooner, but reducing quality changes the video; choose that trade-off based on your needs rather than treating a particular encoder or compression setting as required. If the upload is progressing, do not cancel it just because it seems slow. If you had to stop or the transfer was interrupted, YouTube says you have up to 24 hours to continue where you left off: return to youtube.com/upload and select the same file. This recovery window is YouTube’s stated guidance, not a guarantee that every interrupted transfer will resume successfully.
Verify your exact BSNL plan and decide when to report a fault
Check with BSNL for your exact service type, plan, upload terms, and any usage threshold that applies to your connection. If results remain poor across devices and repeated wired tests, contact BSNL through its official technical complaint route or broadband customer care at 1800-4444. When you report it, share the time-stamped test results, whether each test was wired or wireless, your plan and service type, and whether the problem changes at different times. This information can make the symptoms clearer; BSNL’s published support routes do not establish it as a mandatory form.
