Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your phone or another computer is fast on the same Wi‑Fi but your laptop is slow, troubleshoot the laptop first. Compare both devices in the same place and on the same network, test another Wi‑Fi band or network, then check signal interference, software, drivers and power settings. Do not replace the router or buy an adapter until those tests show where the fault follows.
A second device working normally is a strong clue, not proof of a failed wireless card. Different band support, antenna placement, obstructions, VPN software and driver problems can make one laptop behave differently from every other device.

Start with a fair comparison
Before changing settings, make sure the comparison is meaningful. A laptop in a back room on 2.4 GHz is not being tested under the same conditions as a phone beside the router on 5 GHz.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Test the same network and location
- Place the laptop and a known-good phone or computer within a few feet of each other.
- Connect both to the same Wi‑Fi network name. If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, record which band each device uses.
- Run the same download, video stream or speed test on both devices, one after the other.
- Repeat the test where you normally use the laptop.
If the laptop is slow even beside the router while the other device is fast, distance is unlikely to be the only cause. If both are fast nearby but the laptop slows in its usual location, investigate range, walls, orientation and interference before changing drivers.

Try a different network
Connect the laptop to a phone hotspot or another trusted Wi‑Fi network. A laptop that is slow on several unrelated networks points toward its software, adapter, antenna or operating-system configuration. A laptop that is slow only on one home network points instead toward band compatibility, router settings or local interference. This is a diagnostic distinction, not a guaranteed hardware diagnosis.
Check whether only one app is affected
If ordinary browsing is responsive but one application, site or game is slow, do not assume the Wi‑Fi radio is failing. Temporarily check that app’s server status, proxy, VPN, security software and firewall rules. Microsoft notes that a Windows device can appear connected while a specific application or website remains unreachable. Apple likewise calls out VPN and software that monitors network connections.
Check the Wi‑Fi band and signal
Modern routers may offer 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and, with compatible equipment, 6 GHz. The fastest choice depends on distance, walls, congestion and what the laptop supports.
| Band | Typical advantage | Typical limitation | What to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Longest reach, better penetration through walls and broad device compatibility | Usually lower throughput and more congestion from neighboring networks and household devices | Use it when the laptop is far from the router or 5 GHz drops out |
| 5 GHz | Usually higher throughput and more non-overlapping channels | Shorter range and weaker performance through walls than 2.4 GHz | Use it near the router, then compare performance at your normal desk |
| 6 GHz | High throughput and potentially less congestion close to the access point | Requires a Wi‑Fi 6E router, a Wi‑Fi 6E laptop adapter and compatible drivers; range is limited | Test only when all three requirements are met and the laptop is nearby |
These are trade-offs, not guarantees. A crowded 2.4 GHz network can be slower than a clean 5 GHz connection, while a 5 GHz signal weakened by several walls can perform worse than 2.4 GHz.
Switch bands deliberately
- Open the router’s Wi‑Fi list or the available networks list on the laptop.
- If 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz have separate names, connect to the band you are not currently testing.
- Run the same speed or file-transfer test from the same location.
- Write down the result, signal bars and whether the connection drops.
If one band is consistently better, leave the laptop on that band or adjust the router’s band-steering settings. If the laptop cannot see a band that another device can, verify the adapter’s supported standards and install the laptop manufacturer’s current driver.

Reduce physical and radio interference
Move the laptop temporarily within a few feet of the router. Remove metal objects, docking equipment or thick obstructions between the laptop and access point. Test with the laptop lid in its normal working position; antenna placement inside the display bezel can make orientation matter.
Apple lists microwave ovens, cordless phones, fluorescent lights and wireless video devices as possible interference sources. Turn nearby devices off briefly, move the laptop or router, and repeat the comparison. A change that follows the move is evidence of an environmental problem rather than a defective adapter.
On 2.4 GHz, Microsoft identifies channels 1, 6 and 11 as the usual non-overlapping choices. If nearby networks are crowding your channel, selecting a less congested one in the router can help, but channel changes should be made only after recording the original setting so you can revert if performance worsens.
Fixes for Windows 11 and Windows 10
1. Check the basic connection state
- Open the Wi‑Fi list and confirm the laptop is connected to the intended network, not a guest or extender network.
- Turn Wi‑Fi on and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Restart the laptop and, if every device has recently become slow, restart the router and modem.
These checks sound simple, but a saved connection to the wrong access point can make a laptop appear slow while other devices use the faster one.
2. Run the built-in troubleshooter
In Windows 11, open Get Help from the Start menu and search for network or Wi‑Fi troubleshooting. Follow the automated checks and apply only the changes it explains. Windows 10 exposes similar diagnostics through Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network troubleshooter.

3. Forget and reconnect to the network
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks in Windows 11. In Windows 10, use Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi > Manage known networks.
- Select the affected network and choose Forget.
- Reconnect, enter the Wi‑Fi password and test again.
This rebuilds the saved profile. It will not repair a weak signal, incompatible band or failing adapter, but it can clear a damaged security or profile setting.
4. Check reachability with the default gateway
Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi‑Fi > Hardware properties and note the Default gateway. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt and run:
ping <default-gateway-address>
Replace the angle-bracketed text with the address shown on your laptop, such as 192.168.1.1. Replies show that the laptop can reach the router; they do not prove that the internet service or a particular website is healthy. No replies point you back to the Wi‑Fi link, adapter, router association or local signal.
5. Refresh the adapter driver
- Identify the exact laptop model and wireless adapter before changing anything.
- Download the current Wi‑Fi driver from the laptop manufacturer’s support page and save it locally. Keep a backup driver available.
- Open Device Manager > Network adapters, right-click the wireless adapter and inspect its driver version and date.
- If the problem began after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise install the manufacturer’s current package.
- If you uninstall the adapter, restart Windows and install the saved driver if Windows does not restore connectivity automatically.
Intel’s Windows 11 guidance for the Wi‑Fi 6 AX201 also recommends a clean installation when older packages may conflict. That page was last reviewed April 27, 2022 and applies specifically to the AX201, so use it as general troubleshooting guidance and follow the driver instructions for your exact laptop model.

- Compatibility Systems: This Wi-Fi usb adapter is compatible with Windows11/10/8.1/8/7/XP,not supports Mac OS or Chromebook or Linux. Most Windows 11/10 systems will automatically detect and install the drivers. If the system does not detect the driver, you will need to download it from our website. For Windows 7, you will need to manually install the driver for this wifi card.or you go to the website online-setup support,we do online-setup for you.
Wireless standards are another limit. Intel states that when the router and client use different wireless standards, speeds are limited by the lower standard. A newer router therefore cannot make an older laptop adapter operate at the router’s maximum rate.
6. Prevent Windows from powering down the adapter
- Open Device Manager > Network adapters.
- Right-click the Wi‑Fi adapter and choose Properties.
- On the Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Restart the laptop and test both on battery and while plugged in.
Power saving can cause intermittent drops or slow recovery on some systems. It also increases battery use, so keep the setting only if your tests show a real improvement.
7. Reset Windows networking only after recording settings
For persistent profile or TCP/IP problems, open Windows Terminal as administrator and run these commands one at a time:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Restart Windows afterward. These commands clear or rebuild several network components; they do not fix poor signal, a damaged antenna or an overloaded router. A full Network reset is more disruptive: in Windows 11 use Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. It removes and reinstalls network adapters and may require you to reconnect VPNs and saved networks.

- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
Check VPN and monitoring software
Temporarily quit VPN clients, traffic filters, parental-control tools and security software that inspects network connections. Test ordinary browsing again, then re-enable one tool at a time. If performance drops only when a particular tool is active, update or reconfigure that software rather than replacing the Wi‑Fi hardware.
Update macOS and router firmware
Install available macOS updates when your Mac supports them. Apple also recommends installing router firmware updates supplied by the router maker. Record the current router configuration before updating, and avoid interrupting power during the update.
Try another network
Connect the Mac to a phone hotspot or another trusted network. If it works normally there, investigate your home router, band selection and interference. If it remains slow on unrelated networks, continue with macOS, driver-equivalent firmware updates and hardware support for the exact Mac model.

Use the result to identify the likely cause
| Test result | Most useful next focus | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop is slow on every network, including beside the router | VPN or security software, operating-system updates, adapter firmware, antenna or hardware service | It does not by itself identify which component failed |
| Laptop is slow only on one home network | Band compatibility, router channel, saved profile, local interference and router/client settings | It does not prove the router is defective |
| Performance improves beside the router | Distance, walls, orientation, obstruction or extender placement | It does not prove an extender is the best remedy |
| Only 5 GHz is slow or unavailable | 5 GHz range, channel support, adapter driver and router configuration | It does not mean 2.4 GHz is always faster |
| Only one application or website is slow | That service, VPN, proxy, firewall or application settings | It does not establish a Wi‑Fi radio fault |
| Several devices become slow together | Router, modem, internet service or an outage affecting the shared connection | It does not implicate the laptop specifically |
When hardware replacement or an extender makes sense
Do not buy a replacement card simply because one laptop is slow. First establish whether the problem follows the laptop across multiple networks and remains after software, driver and power checks. Then compare the exact adapter model, supported bands, wireless standards, operating-system compatibility and antenna arrangement for that laptop. Internal card replacement is model-specific and may require compatible antennas, firmware and physical access.
A USB Wi‑Fi adapter can be a temporary diagnostic comparison: if it is fast in the same place while the built-in adapter is slow, suspicion shifts toward the internal adapter or antenna. That test still does not identify the failed part or guarantee that a particular replacement will fit or support the laptop’s operating system.
Microsoft describes a network extender as appropriate when moving the router, access point or device is not possible and coverage is the limitation. An extender is therefore a coverage remedy, not a general fix for a laptop that is slow beside the router while other devices are fast. Extenders can also introduce an additional wireless hop and a different network name, so test placement and throughput before relying on one.
A practical escalation checklist
- Record the laptop model, operating-system version, adapter model and driver date.
- Record the network name, band, approximate location and whether the test was on battery or mains power.
- Repeat a same-location comparison with another device.
- Test a second band and a separate network or hotspot.
- Check for VPN, proxy, firewall and monitoring software.
- Install the laptop maker’s current driver or macOS updates, keeping a rollback path.
- Document whether moving the laptop or removing nearby devices changes the result.
- Contact the laptop maker or a qualified repair provider when the problem persists across networks and the evidence points to the built-in adapter or antenna.
Bring those observations to support instead of reporting only that “Wi‑Fi is slow.” The pattern—one band, one location, one application or every network—determines which component should be investigated next.
