Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A modern router cannot make every part of your internet connection fast. Your service, modem, device, distance from the router, walls, interference and household traffic all affect the result. Before buying anything, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, test more than one device and location, then use those results to identify the bottleneck.
Start by finding out where the slowdown is
Run a few speed tests before changing settings. Record the device, location, time and whether the test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet; note whether other people or devices were using the connection. Test near the router and in the room where Wi-Fi is slow. A single result is not conclusive: the test server and network congestion can affect results. Ofcom recommends testing more than once, and Google explains why results can vary with the selected server and congestion (Ofcom testing guidance; Google speed-test guidance).

Check whether one device or the whole home is affected
If one phone or laptop is slow while other devices work normally in the same place, focus first on that device: check for available software updates and consider its Wi-Fi capabilities. A newer router cannot give an older client capabilities it does not support. Google notes that device type and capability affect Wi-Fi speed (Google troubleshooting guidance).

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
Connect a computer to the router with an Ethernet cable and run a similar speed test. If the wired result is good but Wi-Fi is poor, investigate wireless coverage, interference, congestion or the affected device. If wired and wireless results are both poor, the issue may be the router, modem, broadband service or plan rather than Wi-Fi alone. This comparison narrows the possibilities; it does not identify a cause by itself.
Some router troubleshooting procedures also suggest connecting a computer directly to the modem to distinguish a router problem from a modem or service problem. Do this only if your provider’s instructions allow it, and follow its directions for reconnecting the modem. TP-Link outlines this diagnostic approach in its slow-internet troubleshooting steps.

Improve the Wi-Fi signal before changing settings
Move the router to a better location
Put the router in an open, elevated spot, roughly central to the areas that need coverage. Avoid placing it on the floor, inside a cabinet, behind a bookcase or against thick walls. Large obstacles, including fish tanks, can weaken the wireless path. Keep the router away from potential sources of interference such as microwaves and some cordless devices. After moving it, repeat tests in the same locations so the comparison is meaningful. Ofcom and Google both recommend considering router position, obstructions and interference (Ofcom Wi-Fi guidance; Google troubleshooting guidance).

Check whether household activity coincides with the slowdown
Downloads, video streams, backups and other active devices share the network’s available capacity. If performance drops at particular times, check what is using the connection then. Pause or schedule a large transfer, if practical, and retest. A router’s latest wireless standard does not increase the capacity of your broadband plan or eliminate competition from other traffic.

Try the other Wi-Fi band only if the device supports it
Many routers and client devices can use both 2.4 GHz and higher-frequency Wi-Fi bands. A compatible device on a less congested or higher-frequency band may perform better in some conditions, but the result depends on distance, walls and interference; switching bands is not a guaranteed speed fix. Compare performance in the problem location rather than assuming one band is always best. Google’s troubleshooting guidance discusses device capabilities and Wi-Fi conditions (Google Nest Wi-Fi help).
Change channels only when congestion is plausible
Nearby networks can crowd Wi-Fi channels and reduce performance, but there is no universally best channel or channel width for every home. Check whether performance varies by location or time and use your router’s available network information before changing channel settings. Microsoft also notes that some older Wi-Fi adapters or drivers can have problems with 40 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz. If you adjust a setting, change one thing at a time and retest; revert it if performance gets worse (Microsoft guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout).

Restart and update the equipment
- Restart the router and affected devices. Use the router maker’s instructions rather than repeatedly unplugging equipment during a firmware update or provider-directed process. Ofcom recommends rebooting as a troubleshooting step (Ofcom broadband and Wi-Fi help).
- Install available updates. Update the affected phone or computer and check the router maker’s current instructions for firmware updates. Menus and procedures vary by model; do not follow a procedure intended for a different router.
- Repeat the baseline tests. Use the same devices and locations as before, and note any change. This helps establish whether the restart, update or placement change made a difference.
Decide whether to contact your ISP or extend coverage
When to contact your provider
If a wired test is also slow, contact your ISP and ask it to check for a service issue, plan limitation, line fault or modem problem. If you are testing directly through a modem, follow the provider’s reconnection instructions. A wireless router upgrade will not resolve a slow broadband service.
When mesh may help
If wired performance is satisfactory but Wi-Fi remains weak in multiple distant rooms, a mesh system may address a persistent coverage gap. Ofcom describes mesh as additional units placed around the home and connected to the existing router (Ofcom guidance on improving Wi-Fi). Mesh is not a remedy for slow ISP service or a device with limited Wi-Fi capability.

Before choosing a system, check that its units can be placed where they will communicate reliably, that it works with your existing router and provider, and that your devices and broadband service can use the capabilities you are paying for. Compare the cost of the complete setup, including any additional units you need. Mesh can extend coverage, but the available guidance does not establish a best product or model.
