Start by checking whether a native Arm64 version of the app exists. If it does, install that build. If it does not, Windows 11 can emulate many x86 and x64 desktop apps, but emulation cannot repair an unsupported kernel driver, device driver, graphics component, or anti-cheat system. Update the app and Windows, run the built-in compatibility troubleshooter for older software, and verify Arm64 driver support with the app or hardware maker.
The first decision is your operating system. Windows 11 on Arm supports x64 emulation, with the Prism technology improvements arriving in Windows 11, version 24H2. Windows 10 Arm has a different support model: Microsoft says x64 apps do not run there. The steps below keep those two platforms separate.

What “incompatible” means on a Windows on Arm laptop
Windows on Arm uses an Arm processor rather than the x86 processors traditionally found in Windows PCs. Software compiled for Arm64 can run directly on the processor. Software compiled for x86 or x64 may need emulation, in which Windows translates instructions while the program runs. That translation can affect speed, battery use, installation, or stability.

Therefore, an app can be a normal x86 or x64 program and still fail because one component around it is not Arm-compatible. Printers, PDF utilities, security products, accessibility tools, virtualization software, some graphics components, and game anti-cheat systems are common examples of this boundary.
Before changing anything, record the problem
A precise description prevents you from applying a Windows 10 fix to Windows 11 or blaming emulation for a driver failure. Write down:
- The app’s exact name and version.
- Your laptop’s make, model, and processor model.
- Whether the system is running Windows 11 or Windows 10, plus the installed build.
- The complete error message, if there is one.
- Whether the failure is an installation error, slow performance, a crash, a blank or flickering window, or a missing device.
- Whether the problem started after an app update, a Windows update, a driver change, or a hardware connection.
Take a screenshot of an error before closing it. If the app works on another computer, note which edition and version that computer uses; “works on Windows” is not the same as “works on Windows on Arm.”

Run this repair sequence in order
1. Confirm your Windows version and processor
Open Settings > System > About and record the Windows edition, version, OS build, and processor. The distinction matters most for x64 software: Windows 11 can emulate it, while Microsoft’s separate Windows 10 Arm guidance says x64 apps do not run.
Do not assume that a laptop described as “Windows on Arm” has the same compatibility as every other model. Windows 11 builds and processor generations receive platform improvements at different times, and manufacturers can package different drivers.
2. Search for a native Arm64 release
Visit the app publisher’s official download or support page and search for Arm64, Windows on Arm, or an explicit compatibility statement. Use the publisher’s supported installation route rather than converting or renaming an installer yourself.

Microsoft lists native Arm64 versions or Arm-compatible releases for examples such as Microsoft 365 apps, Chrome, Slack, Spotify, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. Availability changes as publishers update their products, so treat the publisher’s current page as authoritative for the version you need.

If two downloads are offered, choose the one labelled Arm64 for an Arm laptop. If the page offers only x86 or x64, continue with the emulation steps below and check whether the app includes a driver or other native component.
3. Update the app you already have
For a Microsoft Store installation, open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates or the available update control. For software installed from a publisher, open its built-in updater or download the newest release from the publisher’s official site.
Read the release notes when available. A recent release may add Arm64 support, fix a crash specific to emulation, or remove a dependency that previously required an unsupported driver. If the publisher documents an Arm build, uninstalling an old x86 or x64 package and installing the supported Arm64 package can be necessary.
4. Install current Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install offered updates, including restart-required updates.
- Restart the laptop when Windows asks you to.
- Open the app again and test the same task that failed.
Windows 11 on Arm continues to evolve through servicing updates. Updating cannot make an unsupported driver compatible, but it can deliver emulation, graphics, security, and app-platform fixes that affect ordinary user-mode programs.
5. Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older apps
If an older desktop program installs but will not open or behaves incorrectly, use the current Windows 11 path:

- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Choose the affected app, follow the suggested tests, and apply a setting only if it improves the result.
- Retest the app, then record which setting was used if you contact the publisher.
This tool adjusts compatibility settings; it does not turn an x64 Windows 10 app into an Arm64 app and cannot supply a missing kernel driver. Treat it as a diagnostic attempt, not a guarantee.
6. Update device drivers through Windows Update
For an app that opens but flickers, freezes, loses audio, or becomes unresponsive, install all available Windows updates and optional driver updates offered through Windows Update. Restart and retest before making manual driver changes.
Check the app publisher’s support page for known issues affecting your exact version. A display glitch may be an app release problem, a graphics-driver issue, or an emulation bug; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.
How to handle slow apps on Windows 11 Arm
Prefer native code over emulation
An Arm64 build is usually the best performance option because the processor executes its instructions directly. If a publisher offers both an Arm64 and an x64 installer, remove the old package according to the publisher’s instructions and install the Arm64 build. Keep your projects, profiles, and license information backed up before uninstalling.
Understand what Prism changes
Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism, an improved system for running emulated applications. The FAQ describes Prism as available on Snapdragon X Copilot+ PCs and coming to other Windows 11 devices. That does not mean every laptop has the same emulation implementation, nor does it promise a particular frame rate, launch time, or battery result.
Check Settings > System > About for your Windows version and processor, then install current Windows updates. If an emulated app remains slow after updating, ask the publisher whether an Arm64 release exists and whether the app has known Windows on Arm issues. Closing unnecessary background processes may reduce load, but it will not remove the architectural cost of emulation.

Separate normal slowness from a compatibility failure
- Slow but functional: the app may be running under emulation or performing a workload for which the publisher has not optimized its Arm build.
- Very long launch or first-run delay: update the app and Windows, then check the publisher’s release notes.
- Freezes during a device operation: investigate the device or kernel driver rather than treating it as an ordinary app-speed problem.
- Slow graphics or rendering: update Windows and device drivers, then check the publisher’s Arm and graphics requirements.
When an installer says the app cannot run
Check the package architecture
Return to the publisher’s download page and identify whether the installer is Arm64, x86, or x64. On Windows 11, an x86 or x64 user-mode package may work through emulation; on Windows 10 Arm, Microsoft says x64 packages do not run. A message that mentions a processor architecture is a reason to stop and find the correct package, not to repeatedly run the same installer.

Some installers deploy more than the visible application. Security software, virtual machines, accessibility utilities, printer packages, PDF tools, graphics tools, and game anti-cheat components can install services or drivers. Ask the publisher whether every component supports Windows 11 Arm, not merely whether the front-end app is x86 or x64.
Try the supported Windows installation route for peripherals
If a manufacturer’s printer installer does not support ARM, Microsoft Surface guidance suggests trying installation through Windows Settings. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device, select the detected printer, and follow Windows’ prompts. Microsoft says most printers are supported, including printers that support Mopria, but support still depends on an inbox Windows driver or an Arm64 driver from the manufacturer.
If Windows cannot find the printer, verify the exact model, connection method, firmware, and network. Then check the manufacturer’s support page for a model-specific Arm64 driver. A different model from the same product family may use a different driver.

Use a controlled retest
- Restart the laptop after installing app, Windows, or driver updates.
- Open only the affected app and reproduce the problem with the same file or task.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter if the program is older.
- Check the publisher’s release notes and support notices for your app version.
- If the problem appears only when a device is connected, test without that device and investigate its driver separately.
Do not infer that an app is incompatible merely because one document, plug-in, codec, or extension crashes. Test a blank document or a built-in sample when the app offers one, then report the smallest reproducible case to the publisher.
When reinstalling is justified
Reinstall only after confirming the correct architecture and backing up settings or data. Reinstalling an x64 package repeatedly will not help a Windows 10 Arm system, and reinstalling a user-mode app will not provide an absent Arm64 driver. Prefer the publisher’s clean-uninstall instructions because some apps leave services or plug-ins behind.
Games and anti-cheat systems need separate checking
A game may be a normal x86 or x64 application yet still fail because its anti-cheat system uses a kernel driver. Microsoft warns that some games do not work when the required anti-cheat drivers are not built for Windows 11 Arm.
Check the game publisher’s compatibility statement for your exact game, launcher, and anti-cheat version. Microsoft also points readers to the community-maintained Works on WoA site as an evolving reference. Treat such lists as changeable: a game can become compatible after a publisher update, or stop working after a driver change.
Graphics requirements are a second checkpoint. Update Windows and the available graphics drivers, then confirm that the game publisher supports your Windows version and Arm device. Do not assume that successful installation means online play, anti-cheat, controllers, or every graphics mode will work.
Windows 10 Arm: use a different decision path
Microsoft’s Windows Arm FAQ has a separate Windows 10 Arm section. It says 64-bit x64 apps do not run on Windows 10 Arm and that users need Arm64, Arm32, or x86 applications. Do not apply Windows 11’s x64-emulation advice to Windows 10.
For a Windows 10 Arm laptop:
- Look first for an Arm64 or Arm32 release.
- If none exists, check whether the publisher offers an x86 build supported by your Windows 10 edition.
- Do not spend time troubleshooting an x64-only installer as though it were a damaged installation.
- Verify that every required printer, security, virtualization, graphics, or accessibility driver supports your system.
If the publisher provides no compatible build, the practical choices are to use a supported alternative, access the service through a web interface when the publisher supports that option, or use the app on a different compatible computer. Whether a particular laptop can be upgraded to Windows 11 is device-specific and should be confirmed with its manufacturer and Microsoft rather than assumed.
Use the publisher and hardware maker as the final authority
Compatibility lists change. Before opening a support case, collect the app version, installer architecture, Windows build, processor model, exact error, and steps that reproduce the issue. Ask these specific questions:
- Is there a current Arm64 build for this app?
- If the app is x86 or x64, is emulation officially supported on my Windows version and build?
- Does the app install any kernel, device, graphics, security, virtualization, or anti-cheat driver?
- Is that driver available for my exact Windows on Arm device?
- Are there known issues with the current release, and which app version should I install?
For a peripheral, include the exact model number rather than only the product family. Confirm whether Windows has an inbox driver or whether the maker supplies an Arm64 package. Microsoft’s general guidance and Surface-specific installation advice are useful starting points, but the device maker’s model-specific documentation determines whether a particular peripheral is supported.

- Native Arm64 available: install it through the publisher’s supported channel.
- Windows 11, x86 or x64 app with no driver: update Windows and the app, then test emulation and run the compatibility troubleshooter if it is old.
- Windows 10 Arm, x64-only app: it will not run according to Microsoft’s Windows 10 Arm guidance; find an Arm64, Arm32, or x86 option.
- Installer or feature requires a driver: verify Arm64 support for every driver component with the maker.
- Printer installer fails: try adding the exact model through Windows Settings, then confirm model-specific Arm support.
- Game fails at launch or online authentication: check anti-cheat and graphics compatibility with the game publisher.
- App remains slow after updates: determine whether it is emulated, look for an Arm64 release, and ask the publisher about known performance issues rather than expecting Prism to make every workload native.
