Start by identifying what is actually slow. Confirm that you are comparing bits with bytes, determine whether one launcher or every download is affected, check the launcher’s speed limit, region and service status, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. If the transfer rate falls to zero while the disk is busy, the launcher may be installing files rather than losing its connection. These checks are safer and more informative than immediately buying a new router, SSD or faster internet plan.
Use this diagnostic order first
Work through the checks in this order so that each test changes as little as possible:

- Verify the units. Compare the launcher’s displayed rate with your plan using the same unit.
- Define the scope. Test whether the slowdown affects one launcher or all downloads.
- Check the provider. Review service status, the selected content region and any launcher speed cap.
- Test the network path. Pause other transfers and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or another connection.
- Check disk activity. A zero download rate with active writing can be normal installation work.
- Apply platform-specific fixes. Use targeted DNS, cache, proxy or Windows Delivery Optimization settings only when the symptom points there.
No single setting guarantees a faster download. The useful fix depends on whether the bottleneck is measurement, a launcher, the route to its servers, wireless conditions, or local disk installation.

Bits and bytes are different units
Internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second (b/s, Kb/s or Mbps), while Steam commonly displays file-transfer rates in bytes per second (B/s, KB/s or MB/s). One byte is eight bits. Steam gives the example that 768 KB/s equals 6,144 Kb/s, or 6 Mbps. See Steam’s explanation of slow downloads and content-server connections.

To compare a launcher reading with your plan, multiply a bytes-per-second value by eight. A display of 10 MB/s is therefore approximately 80 Mb/s before considering decimal-versus-binary labeling, protocol overhead and normal variation. Conversely, a 100 Mbps plan will not normally appear as 100 MB/s in a launcher.
Do not use the Windows link rate as your internet speed
Windows may show the negotiated Wi-Fi or Ethernet link rate. That is the connection between your PC and the local router, not a guarantee of the throughput available from the game server. Compare an actual download or independent internet test with the launcher’s unit, and test at a time when other devices are not consuming the connection.
Record a short, fair baseline
Before changing settings, note the launcher, game, displayed unit, approximate rate, time, selected region and whether the disk graph is active. Pause cloud synchronization, video uploads and other large transfers. This prevents a background transfer from making a launcher change appear to work or fail.

2. Find out whether one launcher or every download is affected
Only one launcher is slow
A problem confined to Steam or Epic points first to that provider’s servers, region, settings or client software. Check the provider’s status information and launcher controls before changing Windows-wide networking settings. A single slow title can also reflect a busy content server or a route problem rather than your subscription.
Every large download is slow
If several launchers and unrelated downloads are slow, investigate the shared path: Wi-Fi signal and congestion, another device using bandwidth, router or modem conditions, the internet service and the PC’s network configuration. Compare the same PC over Ethernet if practical, and try a different internet connection where available. Do not infer a general outage until the provider or service status confirms one.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

3. Fix Steam downloads that are slower than expected
Try a different nearby download region
Steam selects a download region for content delivery. In the client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and review Download Region. Try another nearby region, then restart or resume the download and compare the rate for several minutes. A region can be temporarily slow or overloaded even when your local connection is healthy. Steam documents this region check in its slow-download guidance.
Choose a region that is geographically close rather than repeatedly jumping to a distant country. A distant server can add latency or take a less efficient route, so the test is to find a healthy nearby alternative, not simply the farthest location.

Third-party security suites, firewalls, traffic monitors and packet-filtering software can interfere with Steam’s connection to content servers. Temporarily test with the relevant filtering component disabled only if you can do so safely, then restore protection and create an appropriate exception if the test identifies it as the cause. Steam specifically lists third-party security or packet-filtering software and connection issues among causes to investigate.
Clear or repair only when the symptom warrants it
Steam’s installation guidance includes clearing the download cache, repairing the Steam library folder and verifying local files for update or installation problems. These are useful when a download is stuck, an update repeatedly fails or installed files are reported as corrupt; they are not a universal bandwidth booster. Follow the current steps in Steam’s Update & Installation Issues support page, and expect Steam to sign you in again after a cache-clearing operation.
4. Fix Epic Games Launcher downloads
Check service status before changing the PC
Open Epic’s service-status information when the launcher is slow, repeatedly disconnects or several users appear to be affected. A provider-side incident cannot be repaired by changing your DNS or buying hardware. If the status is normal, continue with the launcher and connection checks below.

Remove an Epic download speed limit
In Epic Games Launcher, open Settings and find the download section. Make sure Limit Download Speeds is unchecked, then restart the launcher and retry. Epic documents this control in How do I turn off download speed limit in Epic Games Launcher?. A configured cap can make a fast connection look faulty, but removing it cannot exceed the capacity of your connection or the content server.
Use Ethernet as a controlled comparison
Epic Games Store Support’s troubleshooting list says: “Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi”. Connect the PC directly to the router or network point, pause and resume the download, and compare the sustained rate. If Ethernet is consistently faster, investigate Wi-Fi distance, interference, signal quality and congestion before considering equipment changes. Epic also suggests trying another internet connection where available; a phone hotspot can be a diagnostic comparison, although its data allowance and radio conditions may make it unsuitable for the actual download.
Apply DNS, cache and proxy steps selectively
Epic’s broader troubleshooting procedure includes clearing the device cache, confirming that required Epic domains are accessible, flushing DNS, trying a public DNS service and disabling proxy servers. Treat these as targeted troubleshooting steps:
- Clear the launcher cache when cached state appears damaged or the launcher behaves inconsistently after an update.
- Flush DNS when name resolution fails, domains do not open or the launcher reports connection errors.
- Try a public DNS service only as a comparison; DNS selects addresses but does not create extra download bandwidth.
- Check proxy settings when a proxy is configured, required domains are blocked or traffic is being inspected.
- Confirm domain access if a firewall, filtering product or managed network may be blocking Epic services.
Use Epic’s current slow-download troubleshooting instructions for the exact cache, DNS, proxy and domain-access sequence. Restart the launcher after a change so that the test has a clear before-and-after result.
5. Understand downloads that drop to 0 MB/s
A zero transfer rate can mean installation, not a failed connection
Epic explains that its launcher may stop receiving data while it writes and installs files already downloaded. During this stage, the network graph can fall to zero while disk read/write activity remains high. When the writing stage finishes, network transfer can resume. This is especially noticeable with large compressed archives or games that need substantial unpacking.

Read both graphs before taking action
- Pause other transfers and observe the launcher for several minutes.
- Open Windows Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and inspect the disk activity for the drive receiving the game.
- Compare the launcher’s network graph with disk read/write activity.
- If disk activity continues while network activity is idle, allow the installation stage to finish.
- If both network and disk activity remain idle, resume the download and return to the launcher, connection and service-status checks.
The zero-rate pattern alone does not prove that a drive is defective, and it does not justify buying an SSD. A faster drive can help some installation workloads, but the available information does not establish that an unspecified download slowdown will be fixed by one.
6. Compare Wi-Fi, Ethernet and another connection
Run one controlled wired test
Use the same launcher, game and download region. Pause other traffic, connect Ethernet, resume the download and compare a sustained interval rather than one momentary peak. If the wired result is substantially steadier, the wireless path is the leading suspect. Check the PC’s distance from the access point, physical obstructions, crowded channels and other active devices.
When a Cat 6 cable is a reasonable purchase
A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is an optional, relatively simple way to perform or keep a wired connection, provided the PC and router have compatible Ethernet ports and the cable can be routed safely. Buy one after the wired comparison shows a useful improvement or your setup needs a reliable fixed connection. A cable cannot repair a slow content server, a configured launcher cap or an internet service that is already the bottleneck.
When not to upgrade the network
Do not treat a new router, mesh system or higher-speed plan as the default remedy for an unidentified slowdown. First establish that the existing Wi-Fi path or service capacity is the limiting factor. If Ethernet and Wi-Fi are similarly slow, hardware at the wireless edge is less likely to be the explanation than the service, route, launcher or disk stage.
7. Keep Windows Delivery Optimization in the right scope
Windows Delivery Optimization is for Windows updates, Microsoft Store apps and other Microsoft products. Microsoft says it can obtain content from Microsoft or from other PCs, and it provides an activity monitor plus bandwidth controls. It is not a universal speed control for Steam, Epic or other third-party launchers.

Where to inspect it
In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery Optimization. Review Activity monitor to see whether Windows content is using the connection, then inspect the download and upload bandwidth options if automatic Windows delivery is competing with a game download. The labels can vary slightly by Windows release.
Understand what its limits cover
Microsoft states that the download limits described for Delivery Optimization apply to automatic Delivery Optimization updates. Manually initiated downloads, such as Microsoft Store apps, are not governed by those same limits. Therefore, changing this page may reduce competition from Windows update traffic, but it will not directly configure a Steam or Epic download.
Use the official Microsoft Delivery Optimization documentation when you need to interpret activity or bandwidth settings for Microsoft-delivered content.
8. Troubleshoot the common failure patterns
“My internet is fast, but Steam is slow.”
- Confirm the bits-versus-bytes conversion first.
- Check Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region and test a nearby alternative.
- Look for security or packet-filtering software interfering with Steam.
- Compare Steam with another launcher or download. If only Steam is affected, stay focused on Steam’s region and client path.
- Use Steam’s cache, library-repair or file-verification procedures only when an installation or update problem also exists.
“Epic keeps dropping to 0.”
- Watch disk read/write activity while the network graph is at zero.
- If the disk is busy, wait for installation or writing to finish.
- If both disk and network are idle, check service status, remove Limit Download Speeds, restart the launcher and retry.
- Then compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi and use Epic’s cache, DNS, proxy and domain-access checks when the symptoms justify them.
“All downloads are slow on Wi-Fi.”
- Pause competing transfers and test Ethernet.
- If Ethernet improves the result, investigate wireless signal, distance and congestion.
- If both paths are slow, test another connection and check the service or account before buying equipment.
“The launcher shows 0 MB/s but the game is still progressing.”
That pattern is consistent with local installation work. Check disk activity and allow the stage to complete. If progress never resumes and disk activity is also absent, return to the launcher-specific troubleshooting branch rather than repeatedly changing network settings.
9. What not to promise
Official support pages explain causes and troubleshooting steps, but they do not establish a universal percentage improvement from changing regions, DNS, Wi-Fi, cache or Delivery Optimization settings. Results depend on the server, route, connection, launcher and storage workload. A wired connection may help when Wi-Fi is the bottleneck; it cannot guarantee a faster download when the content server or internet service is limiting throughput.
Likewise, the fact that an SSD, router or faster plan can be useful in some setups does not establish that it will solve an unspecified slowdown. Diagnose first, make one change, and compare the same download under the same conditions.
10. A concise decision checklist
- Units: Is the launcher showing bytes while the plan is stated in bits? Multiply bytes per second by eight.
- Scope: Is only one launcher affected, or are all downloads slow?
- Status: Is the relevant service reporting an incident?
- Launcher controls: Is a download cap enabled? Is the selected region busy?
- Connection: Does Ethernet or another connection materially change the sustained rate?
- Interference: Are security filters, proxies, DNS failures or background transfers involved?
- Disk: Is the launcher writing or installing while network activity pauses?
- Windows scope: Is Delivery Optimization consuming bandwidth for Microsoft content, rather than controlling a third-party launcher?
Following that sequence identifies the likely bottleneck without confusing a display-unit difference with a network failure or an installation pause with a stalled download.
