A slow, paused, or failed new-game download is usually solvable without deleting everything. Check the platform or game service, test the connection, confirm free storage and account access, then use the retry or repair procedure for your device. Record the exact error and platform before escalating; the correct fix for a stuck PlayStation transfer is not the same as the fix for a Steam cache problem or a Nintendo Switch download paused by running software.
Work through the checks in order. Stop when the symptom is resolved, and avoid deleting arbitrary folders, saves, or security protections as a first step.

Identify the symptom before changing anything
Note what you can see on screen and when it happens. A transfer that is moving slowly needs a different first check from an item that never starts, an installation that fails during verification, or a title shown with a padlock.

1. Check whether the service is having an outage
Open the official status page for the affected platform or game service. If it reports an alert, repeated cancellations, cache clearing, or reinstalls will not restore the service; wait for the provider to report recovery and try again. Do not assume a service is currently down without checking its live status.
If the status page is normal, narrow the scope of the problem:
- Try another download or online feature on the same device, if one is available.
- Compare with another device on the same home network.
- Note whether only one game, launcher, account, or store is affected.
These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not guarantees. A single failed title can still be a server-side problem, and a second device can be affected by the same router or account restriction.
2. Test the connection and remove obvious contention
Run the built-in test on a console
Use the console’s network-test tool and wait for it to finish. A successful test only proves that the console can complete that test at that moment; it does not guarantee that the game service is healthy or that a long transfer will remain stable.
Stabilize a PC connection
Confirm that the computer remains connected while the download runs. If possible, test a wired connection directly to the router. An Ethernet cable is an optional diagnostic aid, not a guaranteed speed increase and not a requirement for installation. If the transfer works over a cable but not over Wi-Fi, investigate wireless signal, interference, or router placement rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
Restart network hardware safely
HoYoverse’s Help Center lists a stable connection, trying a wired network where possible, and restarting the router among its troubleshooting measures. Stop the game and launcher first, restart the router according to its normal procedure, wait for the connection to return, and then retry. Do not reset the router to factory defaults for a game download problem unless your internet provider or router documentation specifically directs you to do so.

Look for competing traffic and restrictions
- Pause other large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and console updates temporarily.
- Check whether a household bandwidth limit, guest network, VPN, parental-control rule, or workplace/school network is restricting the service.
- Do not disable firewall or antivirus protection wholesale. Prefer a narrowly scoped, trusted allow-list entry for the official launcher or platform, test once, and restore protection immediately after the diagnostic.
A network restriction can make a transfer appear frozen even when ordinary web pages load normally.

3. Confirm storage and system resources
Compare the game’s requirement with actual free space
Open the game’s store or launcher listing and note its stated free-space requirement. Then check the device’s current available storage in its system settings. If the available amount is lower, free space before retrying. PlayStation includes storage among its checks for downloads that will not start.
Do not treat the advertised game size as a universal statement of the temporary space needed during every installation. The requirement can depend on the platform, edition, update, and installation process; use the figure shown for your specific title and device.
Free space without deleting the wrong data
- Remove games or media you can redownload, using the platform’s normal uninstall controls.
- Move captures or other personal files only after confirming they are backed up.
- Do not delete save data, launcher folders, or unknown system files to make room.
- If considering external storage, verify compatibility with the exact console model and the type of content it can run before buying anything. Storage expansion is relevant only when the device’s capacity is the confirmed blocker.
Reduce resource pressure on a PC
Close unused applications, browser tabs, overlays, and other launchers while the game installs. HoYoverse identifies insufficient system resources as a possible cause in addition to low disk space. If the installer fails only when other demanding applications are open, repeat the installation with those applications closed.
4. Retry the download using the platform’s documented method
PlayStation 5: pause, resume, then retry from the library
- Open Downloads/Uploads and pause the affected item.
- Wait briefly, then select resume and watch whether the progress number changes.
- If it remains stuck, cancel and delete that download from the queue.
- Start the title again from Game Library, rather than repeatedly selecting a broken queue entry.
- Before another attempt, check PlayStation service status, system software, available space, and the console connection.
If ordinary retry steps fail, PlayStation documents Safe Mode maintenance that includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Use the official Safe Mode instructions for entering the menu and select only the documented maintenance option; do not choose a reset that removes personal data unless you deliberately intend to erase the console.
PlayStation 4: use Notifications and the Library
- Open Notifications > Downloads and pause the transfer.
- Resume it and check whether the progress changes.
- If it is still stalled, cancel and delete the download.
- Retry from the title in your Library.
- Check service status, system software, free space, and the connection before trying again.
For a persistent problem, PlayStation also documents the Safe Mode database-rebuild option. Follow the current console instructions and avoid any erase or initialization command unless you have a verified backup and have chosen that consequence intentionally.

Nintendo Switch family: close the software that is running
Nintendo notes that some software pauses downloads while it is being played. Save your progress and close the running software before diagnosing a download that will not progress.
- Save and fully close the game or application currently open.
- Confirm that the console has an active internet connection.
- Open the system’s download-progress view, referred to by Nintendo as Update Download Progress, and check the title.
- If the transfer still does not move, restart the console using its normal power-menu option.
- After the restart, check progress again before deleting software or data.
Do not infer that every slow-transfer case has the same cause: the documented pause behavior applies to some software, while service status, connection, storage, and account conditions can affect any title.
Steam on PC: investigate the cache, library, network, drive, and memory
Steam’s official Update & Installation Issues guidance lists several investigation areas rather than one universal fix:

- Clear the Steam download cache.
- Check the Steam library folder.
- Inspect network hardware and the connection.
- Check the storage drive for errors.
- Consider whether system memory is sufficient for the operation.
Clearing the download cache flushes locally cached configuration so Steam can fetch it again. Steam states that you will need to log in again afterward, so make sure you know the account credentials before using that step. It is a repair of cached download information, not a reason to delete game saves or unrelated folders.
After the cache step, retry the same title and note whether the symptom changes. If only one library location fails, inspect that library or drive instead of repeatedly changing network settings.
Other PC launchers
Use the launcher’s own download, verify, repair, or reinstall controls. Menu names differ by product and version, so follow the current instructions for the specific launcher. Do not copy a Steam cache procedure into another launcher or delete folders simply because their names look similar.

Xbox and other platforms
The available guidance does not establish a detailed, current Xbox-specific menu sequence. Use the affected platform’s current support instructions for queue management, storage, updates, and network testing rather than applying the PlayStation or Steam steps verbatim.

5. Repair incomplete files and update software
A download can complete while the installation still fails. HoYoverse’s Help Center article updated August 26, 2025 identifies these possible causes:
- Unstable connections or network restrictions.
- Firewall or antivirus interference.
- Low storage or insufficient system resources.
- Incomplete or corrupted files.
- Outdated operating-system software or drivers.
Its practical remedies are to use a stable or wired connection, check security software, free storage and close applications, verify files or reinstall when necessary, and update the operating system and drivers. HoYoverse states: “Use the official launcher or platform’s (Android/iOS/PlayStation/PC/Xbox) update tool for best results.” Treat that as a reason to use the publisher’s or platform’s built-in repair path, not as permission to remove arbitrary files.
Verify before reinstalling
If the launcher offers Verify, Repair, or an equivalent file check, run it first. Keep the device powered and connected until it finishes. If verification reports missing or damaged data, follow the launcher’s repair instruction. Reinstall only when the official procedure calls for it or verification cannot recover the installation.
Update the environment
- Install pending system updates for the console or PC.
- On PC, update drivers through the hardware or system vendor’s normal update channel.
- Restart after updates when prompted, then retry from the official launcher or platform.
Never download a replacement driver or “fix” from an unknown site just to complete one game installation.

Review security logs for a blocked launcher or platform process. If the software is trusted and the block is clearly the cause, add a temporary, narrowly scoped exception according to the security product’s instructions. Test the download, then remove the exception or restore the previous protection setting. If you cannot identify the blocked process, leave protection enabled and contact the security-product or game-platform support team.

6. Check account, subscription, and license status
A padlock, a missing purchase, or a request to buy a title you already own points to entitlement rather than transfer speed. On PlayStation, check the following:
- Sign in with the account that purchased the title.
- Review transaction history for the purchase and the correct edition.
- Confirm that a PlayStation Plus subscription is active if access comes through that subscription.
- Review game-sharing settings where sharing is relevant.
- Use the platform’s Restore Licenses function, then check the library again.
Do not keep pausing and resuming a locked item while an ownership check is unresolved. If the account, subscription, and transaction all look correct but the title remains unavailable, preserve the account and purchase details for support rather than buying it a second time.
7. Choose the next fix by symptom and risk

8. Avoid common troubleshooting mistakes
- Do not repeatedly delete the same download during an outage. Confirm service status first.
- Do not assume a web-speed test proves the game service is healthy. The route to a store or content server can behave differently.
- Do not use a generic storage multiplier. Compare the game’s displayed requirement with the device’s actual free space for that title.
- Do not disable all security protection. Investigate a specific block and restore protection after a controlled test.
- Do not delete saves or unknown folders. Use the launcher’s verify, repair, uninstall, and reinstall controls.
- Do not apply one platform’s menu path to another. PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and other launchers manage queues and files differently.
- Do not buy storage or a cable as the default cure. Storage expansion helps only when compatible capacity is the confirmed blocker; Ethernet is an optional diagnostic for connection stability.
9. Escalate with a complete record
Contact the platform, game publisher, or launcher support team when the service is operating, local checks are complete, and the same failure remains. Include enough detail for the team to reproduce the problem:

- Whether another download or device worked on the same connection.
- A screenshot or short video, if possible, showing the queue, error, or locked icon.
PlayStation specifically asks for the error code or message, a detailed description and reproduction steps, the date and time of the attempt, and a screenshot or video when possible. Supplying the same record to another support team gives it a concrete starting point and prevents the same basic checks from being repeated without context.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop after a step changes the symptom and let the download or repair finish; stacking several destructive actions makes it difficult to know what worked. If the issue is an active outage, an account entitlement mismatch, or a drive reporting errors, move to the responsible service or hardware support path instead of continuing to reinstall. Keep your notes until the game launches successfully and any license or subscription issue is resolved.
