Those three checks separate a misleading number, a busy home connection and weak Wi‑Fi from a launcher, content-server or internet-service problem. After that, use the repair controls for the launcher delivering the game and document the result before contacting Activision.
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for global release on October 23, 2026, with campaign early access beginning October 16. It is listed for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox PC, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. The correct troubleshooting path depends on which of those platforms is downloading your files.

First, make sure the download is actually slow
Launchers commonly display download throughput in bytes per second, while internet plans are advertised in bits per second. A number that appears eight times lower than your plan can therefore be normal.

Convert the launcher number to your internet-plan units
Multiply the displayed byte rate by eight before comparing it with the provider’s figure. Steam’s example is 768 KB/s × 8 = 6,144 Kb/s, or 6 Mbps. This conversion changes how you read the measurement; it does not increase the download rate.

Use the exact unit printed beside the number. “KB/s” and “MB/s” are byte units; “Kb/s” and “Mb/s” are bit units. Do not treat a conversion as evidence that Activision or your launcher has increased or reduced your service.
Use a clean baseline before changing settings
A download rate that rises and falls is not automatically proof of a fixed Modern Warfare 4 server limit. It can result from other devices using the connection, Wi‑Fi interference, disk processing or changing conditions at the content server. Establish a short, repeatable baseline instead of judging a single moment.
- Write down the platform and launcher, the displayed unit, the approximate rate and the time.
- Stop every other game update and large download on the same network.
- Pause cloud-synchronization jobs and high-bandwidth video streams on computers, phones, televisions and consoles.
- Watch the launcher for several minutes and note whether the rate is steady, intermittent, zero or accompanied by heavy disk activity.
- Repeat the same observation after connecting the downloading device directly to the router with Ethernet, when that is practical.
This gives you two useful comparisons: an uncongested connection versus a shared one, and Wi‑Fi versus a wired path. Keep the notes; they are more useful to support than a screenshot of one brief spike.

Stop competing traffic on the home network
Before troubleshooting the game, remove the simplest source of contention. Another console downloading a patch, a computer uploading photos, a cloud backup or several video streams can consume the same capacity that Modern Warfare 4 needs. A fluctuating rate while those activities are running says little about the game’s servers.
What to pause
- Other game and operating-system updates.
- Cloud storage synchronization and backup jobs.
- Large browser downloads and peer-to-peer transfers.
- 4K video streams, live broadcasts and other sustained media traffic.
- Uploads from security cameras or other devices that compete for upstream capacity.
After pausing them, allow the launcher several minutes to settle and record the new rate. If Modern Warfare 4 improves substantially, the original bottleneck was shared bandwidth rather than a game-specific cap. Resume other activity one item at a time later if you need to identify which device is responsible.
Run the wired-versus-Wi‑Fi test
Wi‑Fi adds variables that do not exist on a direct cable connection: distance, walls, radio interference, crowded channels and signal loss. Connecting the PC or console directly to the router with Ethernet is the cleanest practical test of whether the wireless link is involved.

- Stop the download or leave it running long enough to record a Wi‑Fi baseline.
- Connect the device to a router LAN port with an Ethernet cable.
- Disable Wi‑Fi on the device so it uses the cable, then restart or resume the download.
- Observe the rate for several minutes under the same conditions and record it.
A Cat6 cable is suitable for this comparison, but buying one is not a guaranteed cure for server congestion, launcher throttling or an overloaded internet connection. If the wired rate is much better, improve the wireless path or keep the device wired. If both rates are similarly poor, focus on the launcher, the content server or your internet service instead.
Devices without a usable Ethernet socket may require a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Treat the adapter as a way to perform the test, not as a promise of higher throughput.
Fixes for Steam downloads
Steam has its own slow-download and content-server troubleshooting guidance. Use that guide for programs that interfere with Steam and for content-server connection problems rather than applying Battle.net procedures to a Steam installation.

Check Steam-specific conditions
- Confirm the displayed unit before comparing the rate with your plan.
- Close software that is simultaneously downloading, uploading or inspecting Steam traffic.
- Use Steam’s supported download and content-server troubleshooting controls, then observe the result for several minutes.
- Repeat the test after the competing-traffic and Ethernet checks so you can tell whether a Steam change made a difference.
Do not conclude that a low instantaneous number is a permanent Modern Warfare 4 server cap. Steam may be receiving content in bursts, and disk processing can temporarily reduce network activity while files are written.
Fixes for Battle.net downloads
Blizzard’s supported approach is to check for Battle.net updates and run its repair tool. Perform those checks in the Battle.net installation that is delivering Modern Warfare 4.

- Check Battle.net for an available client update and install it if offered.
- Use the client’s repair tool for the Modern Warfare 4 installation.
- After the check completes, resume the download and record the rate for several minutes.
- If the problem remains, repeat the wired comparison with competing traffic stopped.
For Call of Duty titles, Blizzard also advises installing outside the Downloads, Desktop, Windows or Temp folders. Use a normal default installation location instead. Ensure that the game executable is not configured to run as administrator. These location and permission checks address installation and launcher behavior; they cannot remove congestion at an external content server.

Why a fast internet test does not guarantee a fast game download
An internet speed test measures a separate service and server path. Modern Warfare 4 may be receiving data from a content server with different routing, demand or delivery behavior. A fast test therefore proves that the connection can perform well under those test conditions; it does not establish a fixed rate for the game.
Likewise, a fluctuating launcher graph is not enough to prove that Activision has imposed a universal cap. Record whether the pattern changes with Ethernet, whether other services remain fast and whether the launcher is processing files. Those observations narrow the cause without assigning blame to a server that has not published a limit.
Prepare an evidence-based support request
If the rate remains poor on Ethernet after competing traffic is stopped and the launcher’s checks are complete, escalate through Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 support hub. The hub states that most responses arrive within six hours and that a response will be sent to the email in your account.
Include these details
- Platform and launcher: Steam, Battle.net, Xbox PC, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Displayed download unit and the approximate rate.
- Date and time, including your time zone.
- Whether the test used Wi‑Fi or Ethernet.
- Whether competing downloads, cloud jobs and streams were stopped.
- Whether other internet services were fast at the same time.
- Any repair or update check you ran and what changed.
- Whether the launcher showed heavy disk activity, zero rate or an intermittent graph.
This evidence lets support distinguish unit confusion, local network conditions, launcher behavior and a reproducible delivery problem. Avoid reporting only the advertised speed of your internet plan; the measured launcher unit and test conditions are more useful.
