Find the first point in the chain where the audio disappears: the source or device, the encoder, YouTube’s incoming stream, or the listener’s player. Start by checking whether silence affects one listener or several, then compare the encoder meter, a local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and the public player. That sequence helps locate the fault before you change settings or buy equipment.
First, check whether the silence is local or widespread
- Test the public stream on a second device or network if practical. If only one listener hears silence, check that device’s volume, mute, output selection, browser or app, and player state.
- If multiple viewers report silence, investigate the encoder and incoming stream first. YouTube says reports across multiple connections can indicate an encoder issue.
Note when the problem began and whether it affects everyone. That timing can help distinguish a listener-side problem from a change in the broadcast.

Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the preview and health or error messages. YouTube’s Live streaming error messages guidance includes “Your encoder is sending no audio.” That points you toward the audio output reaching YouTube; it does not, by itself, prove the physical source has failed.
YouTube says the ingestion stream should contain one audio stream and warns that multiple audio streams can cause ingestion problems. Write down the exact message and its timestamp before changing settings. After each change, check whether the same message remains.

Trace the audio from its source into the encoder
- Play known-good audio. Use a familiar track or test tone at a low, safe level. Check that the player is actually playing and its application volume is up.
- Check the operating system and connections. Confirm the system mixer has not muted the application or device, the selected capture device is the one carrying the audio, and any physical connection is seated with the expected input selected.
- Watch the encoder’s input meter. In OBS, play the audio and watch the relevant source in the Audio Mixer. OBS documents its meter, fader, mute, and monitoring controls in the Audio Mixer Guide. If the input indicator is absent, OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details says no audio is reaching OBS.
- Check the active program and routing. Confirm the source is not muted and is routed to the stream mix. A source may be scene-specific, so check that it is active in the scene currently going to air. Inspect source filters if the meter or output suggests the signal is being suppressed.
- Record and listen back. Monitoring alone does not prove that audio is included in the outgoing stream. Make an encoder-side recording and listen to it before relying on the live broadcast. OBS recommends listening as early as possible in the chain and again when the signal reaches OBS.
OBS’s Audio Sources documentation notes that duplicating an audio device both globally and in a scene can cause echo. Avoid adding a duplicate source as a blind fix; first identify which source is meant to feed the program.
Check the outgoing audio format and stream count
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists AAC or MP3 for live audio. For stereo, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio. In Live Control Room, use the current health message to identify a missing stream, multiple audio streams, an incorrect sample rate, or low audio bitrate rather than assuming a preset is correct.

Do not add another track or duplicate an audio device as a guess: YouTube’s no-audio guidance says the ingest stream should contain one audio stream.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Listen to an encoder-side recording. If it is silent, return to source selection, mute state, routing, and track assignment.
- Listen to the Live Control Room preview and check its health message. If the recording has sound but YouTube reports no audio, inspect the ingest track and format settings.
- Test the public player on another device or network. If the recording and preview have sound but public playback is silent for multiple listeners, preserve the timestamps and messages and use YouTube’s report-problem route.
For a 24/7 station, include these checks in routine monitoring and test backup-encoder or restart procedures during planned maintenance. YouTube’s general streaming tips discuss backup-encoder testing and continuous monitoring; they do not establish a special automatic silence alarm or guaranteed unattended recovery procedure for always-on radio streams.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you observe | Next check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One listener reports silence | That player’s mute, volume, selected output, and browser or app | The issue may be limited to that playback device. |
| OBS’s source meter has no activity | Playback, selected capture device, operating-system or app volume, connection, and source filters | OBS says an absent input indicator means audio is not reaching OBS. |
| The OBS meter moves, but the encoder recording is silent | Mute state, output routing, active program scene, and track assignment | A moving source meter does not confirm that source is in the recorded or streamed mix. |
| The encoder recording has audio, but YouTube flags no audio | Ingest audio track, codec, sample rate, and the exact health message | YouTube’s guidance identifies missing or incorrectly configured incoming audio as possible causes. |
| The recording and preview have sound, but public listeners report silence | Test another client or network; if it persists, record timestamps and report the issue to YouTube | This separates local playback trouble from a problem affecting public playback. |
These are diagnostic directions, not guarantees: validate each stage directly because a symptom alone does not identify the failed device.
