If a YouTube radio stream goes silent between songs, first find out whether the gap is in the audio file, the playlist player, the encoder output, or YouTube delivery. Play the exact transition, then check the encoder preview or a local recording. A gap that appears locally points upstream; clean local output with reports from multiple viewers points toward delivery or network health. No single bitrate, latency, or keyframe setting fixes every between-song gap.
Find out where the silence begins
Note the two tracks around the problem, the approximate time, whether it is silence or buffering, and whether the same transition causes it again. Ask whether one viewer is affected, viewers on the same network, or viewers on different networks. These clues help narrow the cause but do not prove it.

- Play the exact source files. Listen to the end of the outgoing song and the beginning of the next, including the transition. If the gap is audible in either file, edit or replace that media and check the revised version.
- Check whether the problem follows a playlist boundary. A repeatable gap at the same transition makes the files, player transition, or duration and timestamp handling good first places to inspect.
- Listen to the encoder output. Check the encoder preview and, if available, a local recording or archive of the outgoing stream. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, routed sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive when troubleshooting a live stream (YouTube Help).
- Compare local output with what viewers hear. If the local output has the gap, focus on the source, playback, routing, or encoder. If it is clean but viewers report silence or buffering, inspect YouTube’s stream-health information and the outbound connection.
Make one targeted change at a time, then check the same transition again. That makes it easier to tell whether the change addressed the cause.

Silence is present in the source
Check the audio at full length around the outgoing track’s ending and the next track’s opening. Remove or replace unintended silence in the media, then listen to the revised files in the same player used for the stream.

The gap happens at a repeatable boundary
Inspect how the playlist player loads and switches files. Gapless playback depends on the playback pipeline and how the next item is prepared. GStreamer’s stream-synchronizer documentation discusses advance buffering and well-bounded media, and notes that compressed audio may involve codec delay (GStreamer documentation). That does not establish a universal player setting; test the actual transition in your setup.
FFmpeg concat boundaries
If FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is building the sequence, verify the files’ durations and compatibility. The demuxer reads files in sequence and uses each file’s duration to position the next file; FFmpeg warns that an incorrect duration can cause artifacts. Its documentation also requires the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base (FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation). A concat list is not a guarantee of gapless playback: compare the resulting local output with the source boundary.

If the encoder output contains the gap
When the preview or local archive also contains silence, changing YouTube delivery settings is unlikely to repair what is already present in the encoder output. Check these upstream causes:
- Routed audio sources: confirm the intended player or input is routed into the stream and remains active through the transition.
- Encoder errors: look for errors at the time of the gap.
- CPU load: check whether the system is under heavy load when the player changes tracks.
- Player and media behavior: compare the local output with the exact source files and test the transition after any player or media change.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance includes checking these areas and the local archive (YouTube Help). Avoid changing several settings at once; verify whether each change affects the same boundary.

If local output is clean but viewers hear a problem
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health information and compare reports from viewers. YouTube notes that an issue reported by one viewer may be local to that viewer; reports from viewers on different internet connections can point toward an encoder issue (YouTube Help). Match a dashboard warning to the symptom rather than assuming every warning explains the silence.
Look for dropped frames or disconnections
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or that the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. If Wi-Fi instability is suspected, OBS recommends trying a wired connection (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting). A cable can help with a network problem; it cannot fix silence already present in the source or encoder output.

Distinguish stream delivery from viewer buffering
Viewer buffering can vary with device, location, and internet connection. OBS recommends checking for dropped frames and says reducing bitrate can sometimes better accommodate viewers (OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting). Treat bitrate changes as a delivery diagnostic, not a remedy for a gap that is audible in the local encoder output.

Latency, video keyframes, sample rate, or a protocol switch should not be treated as universal fixes for song-boundary silence. YouTube’s HLS guidance includes protocol-specific recommendations such as 44.1 kHz audio for stereo and 128 Kbps for stereo in HLS mode; those values do not show that changing sample rate or switching to HLS cures a track transition (YouTube HLS setup). Confirm the ingest mode and an applicable stream-health warning before changing HLS-specific settings.

Retest the same transition
- Use the corrected media or player configuration, or test in a short controlled stream when practical.
- Listen to the encoder preview or local recording through the same outgoing-to-incoming track boundary.
- If local output is clean, compare it with viewer reports and YouTube stream health.
- Keep the change only if the symptom changes; otherwise return to the previous setting and investigate the next likely cause.
