The dependable fix is to let the game or platform precompile and cache that work before the relevant scene is rendered. On Steam, enable background Vulkan shader processing when the option is available. In Unreal Engine games, persistent hitches require the developer to validate PSO (pipeline state object) precaching and investigate cache misses; buying faster hardware or deleting a cache is not a universal remedy.
This guide explains how to identify compilation stutter, what players can safely change, and what developers must fix when a cache is incomplete.

What shader compilation stutter feels like
A shader is GPU code for a particular material or visual effect. A modern game may also need a complete graphics pipeline state: shaders plus render-target formats, blending, rasterization, and other settings. If those pieces are compiled when a new effect first appears, the CPU and driver can pause normal frame delivery. You may see a brief freeze when entering a new area, looking at a new effect, firing a weapon, or opening a menu for the first time.

Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation describes the mechanism directly: “Unreal Engine compiles material instructions into shaders to prepare them for execution on the GPU. While materials’ overall performance improves significantly once compilation is finished, the act of compiling shaders can result in significant processing spikes, which in turn causes momentary but noticeable framerate hitches.” Epic’s performance guidance is specifically about Unreal Engine; other engines can use different systems.

Compilation stutter is different from a consistently low frame rate. A low frame rate lasts while the scene is demanding. A compilation hitch is usually a short interruption tied to a previously unseen effect, and it often becomes less frequent after the game has visited more content and populated its caches.
Confirm that compilation is the likely cause
Timing alone cannot prove the cause. Use these observations to separate compilation from streaming, CPU simulation, shader bugs, or storage delays:
- First-use pattern: the hitch occurs the first time a material, particle effect, weapon skin, or lighting combination appears, then is reduced on later visits.
- Repeatable trigger: turning toward the same doorway or effect causes a pause at the same point until the relevant data has been processed.
- Loading or background activity: the game or launcher reports shader processing, precompilation, or a cache being built before play.
- Logs or profiling evidence: an Unreal log reports newly encountered graphics PSOs, missed or late precache work, or a cache that was not opened or populated.
If the hitch occurs randomly, continues after repeated visits, or coincides with texture streaming and disk activity, do not label it a shader problem without evidence. A CPU profile, storage trace, or the game’s own support diagnostics may point elsewhere.

Unreal’s PSO documentation uses a default 20 ms runtime-creation hitch threshold for diagnostics. That is an engine setting used to flag work; it is not a definition of noticeable stutter for every game, monitor, or player.
Steam players: process Vulkan shaders before launching
Steam’s shader pre-cache is separate from an engine’s PSO cache. In a 2023 Proton issue discussion, a Valve developer explained that Steam can take hardware-independent Vulkan shaders already seen for a game and feed them to the video driver for conversion into hardware-specific code. That conversion is platform and driver work; it does not guarantee that every game state is covered.
Use the following path when your Steam client exposes the setting:

- Open Steam.
- Choose Steam > Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Look for the background Vulkan shader-processing or shader pre-cache option described in the client.
- Enable background processing, then allow Steam to finish before starting the game when practical.
The exact label and placement can change between Steam builds, so verify the wording in the installed client. The option applies to Steam’s Vulkan pre-cache behavior. It is not a guaranteed fix for DirectX games, non-Steam launchers, or hitches caused by an engine’s missing pipeline states. Valve’s explanation is in the Proton issue discussion.
What to expect after enabling it
- Steam may perform noticeable CPU, disk, or network work while processing data in the background.
- The initial run can still hitch if the game has not supplied a shader, pipeline state, or permutation to the cache.
- A driver update, game update, graphics-API change, or hardware change can invalidate previously compiled code and trigger processing again.
- Background processing moves work earlier; it does not make compilation disappear.
If Steam shows no pre-cache data for a title, there is nothing in this setting for the client to process. Contact the game’s support channel rather than deleting unrelated cache folders.
Unreal Engine games: what players can check
Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation describes PSO precaching as gathering the state information a game needs and compiling PSOs asynchronously. A bundled PSO cache can compile states earlier in the run, but only if the cache contains the states used by that build and is compatible with the active graphics API.
Check for evidence instead of guessing
- Reproduce the hitch. Note the exact location, effect, and whether a second visit behaves differently.
- Find the game log. Look for messages that a PSO cache was opened, how many precompile tasks were scheduled, and whether newly encountered graphics PSOs appeared during play.
- Check the graphics API. A cache generated for one supported API may not cover another. If the game lets you choose between APIs, record which one is active before comparing results.
- Ask the developer to inspect profiling data. Unreal Insights can show missed or late PSO work. If there is no PSO evidence, the documentation recommends CPU profiling because the hitch may have another source.
These logs and profilers are primarily developer tools. A player can provide the reproduction steps, log excerpts, API selection, game version, and hardware details to the studio; the studio may need to ship a corrected cache or build.
Safe player-side changes
- Allow any in-game “compiling shaders” or “optimizing shaders” stage to complete before entering a demanding scene.
- Keep the game on the graphics API for which its cache was designed unless support instructions say otherwise.
- After a major game or driver update, expect a new warm-up pass and test the same scene again.
- Use the game’s documented cache-reset procedure only when its support page specifically instructs you to do so.
There is no universal end-user command or folder that should be deleted for every Unreal title. Cache locations, formats, and rebuild rules are game-specific, and deleting files can force a longer recompilation without fixing an incomplete cache.

| Mechanism | Who performs the work | When it runs | Coverage and compatibility | Evidence of failure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Vulkan shader pre-cache | Steam supplies previously seen, hardware-independent Vulkan shaders to the video driver. | In the background or before launch, depending on the client’s processing state. | Vulkan-focused and dependent on available pre-cache data, driver, hardware, and game version. | Steam processing activity, followed by a hitch when the game requests data not present in the pre-cache. |
| Unreal PSO precaching | The game’s Unreal build gathers PSO state and compiles it asynchronously. | During startup, loading, or background precache, with runtime work possible when a state was missed. | Only states included in the bundled or generated cache and supported by the active graphics API. | Logs showing cache-open status, precompile-task counts, newly encountered PSOs, or Unreal Insights timers for late work. |
These systems can coexist, but they are not interchangeable. Steam’s path cannot repair a game that failed to ship the required PSO states, and an Unreal cache cannot supply data that Steam’s Vulkan pre-cache never received.

Developer checklist for eliminating runtime PSO hitches
If you maintain an Unreal Engine game, the fix is a content-and-build problem rather than a player hardware recommendation.
1. Enable and verify precaching
Use Unreal’s automatic PSO precaching and bundled-cache facilities where appropriate for the project. Verify at runtime that the cache opens successfully and that the expected number of precompile tasks is created. A cache file existing on disk is not proof that the game loaded it or that it contains the states the current build needs.
2. Capture the states the game actually uses
Exercise representative maps, materials, effects, view modes, and hardware/API combinations while generating cache data. Include states introduced by content updates. If a new permutation is created after the cache was built, it can still compile on first use.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Validate API and build compatibility
Associate each cache with the graphics API and build configuration it supports. Test the shipping configuration, not only an editor session. A cache produced for a different API, shader permutation set, or game build may be ignored or incomplete.
4. Profile misses and late compilation
Unreal’s guidance recommends Unreal Insights timers for missed or late PSOs and a CPU profiler when the hitch is not explained by PSO work. Record whether the expensive event is cache lookup, compilation, synchronization, asset loading, or unrelated game-thread work.
5. Balance precache cost
Asynchronous compilation still consumes memory, CPU time, and storage bandwidth. Measure startup and loading impact on the target hardware, and tune the workload for the project instead of assuming that compiling every possible state at once is optimal.

6. Ship a regression test
Automate a route through scenes that previously triggered hitches. Test a clean cache, a warmed cache, a post-update cache, and each supported graphics API. Track both the number of runtime PSO creations and the duration of the resulting stalls.

When the cache exists but stutter remains
A cache can be present and still fail to prevent a hitch. Work through these branches:
The cache was never opened
Check the log for an open or load message. A path, permissions issue, corrupted file, or build mismatch can leave the game compiling at runtime. The remedy belongs in the game’s packaging or initialization code.
The cache opened but is incomplete
Look for newly encountered PSOs during the exact scene that hitches. Add those states to the capture process, rebuild the cache, and retest the shipping build.
The active API is not covered
Confirm the API selected by the player matches the API for which the cache was generated and validated. If multiple APIs are supported, maintain and test the appropriate cache data for each one.
The hitch is not PSO compilation
If logs show no late PSO work, use CPU profiling and inspect asset streaming, garbage collection, synchronization, shader parameter updates, and other game-thread tasks. Treating every pause as shader compilation can hide the actual bottleneck.
Best Value
The game or driver changed
After an update, a previously warmed cache may no longer match the executable or driver. Record the versions when reporting the regression and let the title’s support process define whether a cache reset is appropriate.
Why buying hardware is not the first fix
The documented remedies for compilation hitches are precompilation, caching, and diagnosis. A faster CPU, GPU, more memory, faster storage, or improved cooling may change how long compilation takes, but the evidence here does not establish any purchase as a universal cure. A system can have high-end hardware and still hitch when a required PSO is compiled synchronously at first use.
Likewise, a driver update can help a specific compatibility problem but is not a guaranteed shader-stutter fix. Install updates when the game developer or driver release notes identify a relevant issue, then retest with the same reproduction steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical decision path
- Does the hitch happen on first use of a visual effect? If no, investigate streaming, CPU, or storage causes first. If yes, continue.
- Does the launcher offer shader processing? On Steam, check Settings > Downloads for the Vulkan background-processing option and let it finish.
- Is the game built with Unreal Engine? Provide the developer with the reproduction route, log, API, game version, and hardware details; ask whether PSO precaching and cache coverage were validated.
- Does evidence show a cache miss or late PSO? The developer needs to expand or correct the cache. If not, request CPU or engine profiling for the real bottleneck.
- Are you considering deleting a cache? Do it only under title-specific support instructions, because a rebuild can add startup work without correcting the underlying omission.
Frequently asked questions
Is shader compilation the same as texture or asset streaming?
No. Both can cause a hitch when new content appears, but shader compilation creates GPU-executable code or pipeline states, while streaming moves assets such as textures and meshes into memory. Logs and profiling are needed to distinguish them.
Why does a game stutter less after I play for a while?
The first visit may populate a cache or complete compilation for that state. A later visit can reuse the result, provided the game, driver, graphics API, and cache remain compatible.
Will lowering graphics settings stop compilation stutter?
It may change which material or pipeline permutations are used, but no general setting is established as a fix. If the game still compiles a state at first use, the hitch can remain.
Does an FPS cap remove the hitch?
An FPS cap can smooth ordinary frame-time variation, but it cannot eliminate a synchronous compilation pause. The missing or late compilation work must be cached, moved earlier, or corrected by the developer.
Should I disable Steam’s shader processing if it uses CPU or disk time?
Disabling it avoids background processing but can move more work to launch or first use. Keep it enabled when reducing Vulkan first-use hitches is more important than background resource use, and verify the effect on the specific title.
