Server error 0x8007422 is probably a mistyped or misread 0x80070422. Microsoft does not list 0x8007422 as a defined Windows error, while 0x80070422 is ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED, commonly raised when Windows Update is disabled or stopped. Confirm the exact value in the original event or dialog before changing a production server. Then check Windows Update and BITS, repair the component store with DISM, repair protected files with SFC, and provide a matching installation source if DISM requests one.
Confirm the code before repairing the server
The difference between 0x8007422 and 0x80070422 matters. Microsoft’s common Windows Update error material documents 0x80070422, not a separate 0x8007422 condition. In Microsoft Q&A discussions, responders often interpret the latter as a transcription error for the former. Treat that as the leading explanation, not proof that every occurrence has the same cause.

- Copy the code exactly as displayed. Check capitalization, every digit, and whether a zero was omitted or an extra digit inserted.
- Record the Windows Server edition and build, the time of failure, and the operation that failed. Note whether the problem occurred during Windows Update, a role or feature installation, Microsoft Store activity, or an Xbox download.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect the System and Windows Setup logs around that time. For role and feature operations, also inspect

If the source clearly shows another code, stop using this procedure as the diagnosis and follow the Microsoft documentation for that confirmed code instead.
What 0x80070422 means
Microsoft Learn describes the condition this way: “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” The service may have been disabled by policy, stopped after a failure, or prevented from starting because of a damaged Windows component. The same underlying service state can surface indirectly when a server installs a role or feature that requires servicing.
#1 Best Overall
Reports using the mistyped 0x8007422 string also appear in Microsoft Store and Xbox download contexts. Those are client-facing symptoms, but the first check remains the Windows Update service. Store cache reset or app repair is secondary and belongs on the affected client, not on an unrelated server.
Prepare before changing a production server
- Use an account with local administrator rights.
- Schedule a maintenance window if the machine hosts important roles or applications. Starting services, running DISM, SFC, or restarting can affect active workloads.
- Record the current startup setting for Windows Update and BITS, and capture any domain or local policy that controls them. A policy may intentionally stop a service; changing it locally can be reversed at the next policy refresh.
- Ensure the server has enough free disk space for servicing operations and that a reboot is acceptable.
- If the server is managed through an approved update system, follow that system’s change process rather than bypassing it.
Repair sequence for the likely 0x80070422 condition
1. Enable and start Windows Update
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and select OK. - Find Windows Update in the service list and open its properties.
- Set Startup type to an enabled mode permitted by your server policy. Do not leave it set to Disabled.
- Select Apply, then Start if the service is stopped. Select OK to save the change.
- Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). Check that it is not disabled and start it when it is stopped and your update policy allows it.
- Restart the server if Windows or the service properties request it, then retry the operation that produced the error.
Microsoft Support’s 0x80070422 instructions specifically call for enabling Windows Update, starting it when stopped, applying the change, restarting, and trying the update again. If the service immediately stops, note the service error and check Event Viewer before repeatedly attempting to start it.
2. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
If the service is enabled but updates or role installation still fail, use an elevated command prompt. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and run:

/Online targets the running operating system. /Cleanup-Image checks the component store, and /RestoreHealth attempts to repair corruption. Let the command reach completion; interrupting it can leave servicing work unfinished. The console reports whether the operation completed, found corruption, or could not locate repair files.
If DISM fails, record the error text and review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. The log can show which package or source file is missing and is more useful than rerunning the same command without examining the failure.
3. Repair protected system files with SFC
After DISM completes, run System File Checker from the same elevated command prompt:

SFC.exe /Scannow
SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid component-store copy is available. Wait for the verification to reach 100 percent, read the final result, and restart the server. Retry Windows Update or the role and feature installation only after the restart.

Running SFC first when the store itself is damaged can limit what it can repair.
4. Provide a matching repair source when DISM asks for one
A DISM source error means the running server could not obtain the files required for repair. Use a repair source from a server running the same operating-system version. Match the edition and build as closely as your environment requires; do not point DISM at a random or older image.
Run the Microsoft-documented source form, replacing the path with an approved source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<path> /LimitAccess
/Source:<path> identifies the files DISM should use. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update while it repairs from that source. The path can be a location made available by your server team; preserve the exact syntax required by the source media or image. If the source does not match, DISM may fail again or leave the underlying corruption unresolved.

Once DISM succeeds, run SFC.exe /Scannow again, restart, and test the original operation.
Review evidence after each attempt
Do not judge a repair solely by whether the service starts once. Check the next update or installation attempt and correlate its time with Event Viewer entries.
| Evidence location | What it can tell you | When to check |
|---|---|---|
| System log | Service-start failures, dependency errors, and restart events | Immediately after trying to start Windows Update or BITS |
| Windows Setup log | Servicing, update, or setup failures tied to the operation | After a failed update, role, or feature action |
| ServerManager-MultiMachine log | Role and feature operation details on Windows Server | When Server Manager installation or removal fails |
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log |
Component-store and protected-file servicing details | When DISM or SFC reports an error or incomplete repair |
Preserve the original event, the command output, and the relevant log excerpts if you need to escalate. A timestamped record prevents a later service restart from obscuring the first failure.

The 0x8007422 spelling has been reported when Microsoft Store or Xbox cannot download an app or game. First apply the Windows Update service and BITS checks on the affected Windows installation. If those services are healthy and the error occurs only in the Store or Xbox client, use that client’s built-in cache reset or app-repair option. Perform those actions in the affected client context; they are not substitutes for repairing a server’s component store.
If the Store or Xbox operation continues to fail, capture its exact message and event details. A confirmed code other than 0x80070422 requires a different troubleshooting path.
Compare the repair approaches
| Approach | Microsoft support status | What it changes | Matching source required | Evidence produced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enable and start Windows Update/BITS | Directly supported for 0x80070422 | Service configuration and runtime state | No | Service properties, start result, and System events |
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth |
Standard Windows servicing repair | Repairs the online component store where possible | Only if DISM cannot obtain required files | DISM result and CBS log |
SFC.exe /Scannow |
Standard protected-file repair | Checks and replaces protected system files | Normally uses the local component store | SFC result and servicing records |
DISM with /Source and /LimitAccess |
Documented option when source files are missing | Repairs using an administrator-supplied source | Yes; use the same operating-system version | DISM output and CBS log |
These steps are generally in-place repairs: they target service configuration, the component store, or protected files rather than removing installed roles, applications, or user data. Nevertheless, preserve your normal server backups and change records before servicing.

Common failure modes and what to do
The Windows Update service is disabled again
Check local and domain policy, configuration-management jobs, and approved update tooling. A policy-controlled service can revert after a refresh. Record the policy owner and use the approved change route instead of repeatedly forcing a local setting.
The service will not start
Read the exact service error and inspect the System log for dependency or account failures. Verify BITS and other dependencies shown in the service properties. Do not delete service registry entries or alter dependencies from an unverified internet script; those actions can create a broader outage and are not part of the supported sequence.
DISM says source files could not be found
Use the matching-source form and verify the source’s edition and build. An image from a different release is not an acceptable substitute merely because its architecture appears similar. If the same-version source is unavailable, stop and obtain approved media rather than guessing.
SFC reports files it could not repair
Confirm that DISM completed successfully, restart, and run SFC again. Keep the CBS log and the final SFC message. Persistent corruption after a valid source-backed DISM repair needs administrator-led servicing analysis rather than repeated blind scans.
The code is confirmed as something other than 0x80070422
Do not force this procedure to fit. Recheck the original event, identify the exact hexadecimal value, and use the documentation for that value. The evidence for the 0x8007422 spelling supports a likely transcription error, not a universal diagnosis.

When the repair is complete
- Windows Update or the affected role and feature operation completes without the original code.
- Windows Update and BITS remain in the startup state approved for the server.
- DISM and SFC have produced successful or understood results, with logs retained according to your policy.
- The server has been restarted when requested and monitored for service or application regressions.
- Your change record contains the original code, confirmed code, commands run, source version if used, timestamps, and final test result.
For a production server, this evidence is as important as the immediate recovery: it shows whether the incident was a disabled service, component-store corruption, protected-file damage, or a different code that only looked similar.
