Fix Selenium’s InvalidSelectorException by matching the locator strategy to the selector syntax, then correcting the expression itself. For example, pass #fname to a CSS locator—not an ID locator or XPath locator. This exception usually means Selenium cannot use the selector as written; it does not, by itself, mean the element is simply missing.
1. Check that the locator strategy matches the selector
Start with the Selenium call that creates the locator. Its first argument or method identifies how Selenium will interpret the locator string. The string must use that strategy’s syntax:
| What you have | Use this strategy | Example |
|---|---|---|
| CSS selector | By.CSS_SELECTOR (Python), By.cssSelector (Java), or the equivalent for your binding |
#fname |
| XPath expression | By.XPATH (Python), By.xpath (Java), or the equivalent |
//input[@value='f'] |
| ID value | By.ID (Python), By.id (Java), or the equivalent |
fname |
These forms are not interchangeable. In particular, don’t pass #fname to an ID locator: the ID locator expects the ID value, without CSS’s # prefix. Selenium lists mixing CSS and XPath syntax with the wrong strategy, and supplying CSS or XPath syntax to an ID locator, among common causes of this exception. See Selenium’s locator strategies reference.
Python examples
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
# CSS selector
field = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "#fname")
# XPath expression
field = driver.find_element(By.XPATH, "//input[@value='f']")
# ID value, without the CSS # prefix
field = driver.find_element(By.ID, "fname")
Java examples
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
WebElement field = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("#fname"));
WebElement sameField = driver.findElement(By.xpath("//input[@value='f']"));
WebElement byId = driver.findElement(By.id("fname"));
The examples assume the target page contains an element matching the locator. A syntactically valid locator that matches nothing raises a different problem, covered below.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Inspect and validate the expression
If the strategy is correct, check the selector’s syntax. Look for mismatched quotes, missing closing brackets or parentheses, invalid characters, and grammar that does not belong to the selected language. Selenium’s troubleshooting guide recommends testing CSS or XPath expressions with browser developer tools or a validator; it also names the SelectorsHub browser extension as an option for obtaining a known-good selector. A generated selector is a starting point, not a guarantee that it will remain stable as the page changes. Selenium: Understanding Common Errors
For a quick check in browser developer tools, try the expression using the browser’s CSS or XPath query facility. For CSS, the simple ID selector #fname is valid. For XPath, an example is //input[@value='f']. Confirm that the expression is being tested as CSS or XPath, respectively, and that it identifies the kind of element Selenium expects.

3. Choose a locator that is easy to maintain
Once the expression works, prefer a unique, predictable ID if the page provides one. Otherwise, Selenium recommends a well-written CSS selector where practical. XPath can express flexible relationships, but Selenium notes that its syntax can be more complicated and harder to debug. Keep locators compact and readable so a future page change is easier to diagnose. Selenium: Tips on working with locators
4. Distinguish an invalid selector from an element that is not found
InvalidSelectorException points to a malformed or incompatible locator. NoSuchElementException means Selenium did not find a matching element using the locator at the time it searched. If correcting the selector changes the exception to NoSuchElementException, investigate whether the test opened the expected page, whether the locator still matches the current page, and whether the element is available yet. Synchronization problems can affect Selenium tests, but waiting cannot repair an expression Selenium cannot parse. See Selenium’s troubleshooting assistance.

5. Account for binding and version differences
The exact documented scope of this exception can vary by language binding and Selenium version. Selenium’s Python 4.50.0 API page says that, in its current documented cases, the exception concerns XPath expressions that are syntactically invalid or do not select WebElements. That wording is specific to the Python API documentation; don’t assume it describes every binding and driver. Selenium Python 4.50.0 exception API
Selenium’s April 21, 2023 project post describes a Java and C# behavior change in Selenium 4.8.2: in the wait scenario discussed, an invalid locator now throws InvalidSelectorException immediately rather than appearing to wait until a timeout. If exception timing differs from what you expect, check the Selenium version and language binding you are actually running. Selenium: InvalidSelectorException has changed

6. Troubleshooting checklist
- CSS string passed to XPath, or vice versa: change the locator strategy or rewrite the expression in the intended syntax.
- CSS or XPath string passed to an ID locator: use the element’s bare ID value with the ID strategy, or use the corresponding CSS/XPath strategy.
- Malformed expression: balance quotes, brackets, and parentheses; remove invalid punctuation; validate the selector in browser developer tools or a CSS/XPath validator.
- Selector is valid but no element is found: check the page, the current DOM, and synchronization instead of treating it as a selector-parsing error.
- Expression appears valid but behavior differs by browser or driver: after verifying the selector and locator strategy, try another browser to help identify a driver-specific issue.
- Exception timing differs across environments: check the binding and Selenium version, especially for Java or C# behavior described for versions before and after 4.8.2.
