SEC_ERROR_REVOKED_CERTIFICATE means Firefox has determined that the TLS certificate presented by a website should no longer be trusted. The safest fix depends on the scope: a single-site error usually requires the website owner to replace its certificate, while failures on many unrelated sites point to a local clock, proxy, VPN, security scanner, browser profile or network problem. Do not disable certificate validation or create a permanent exception for a public site.
What SEC_ERROR_REVOKED_CERTIFICATE means
When you open an HTTPS address, Firefox checks the website’s TLS certificate before sending normal web traffic. The certificate identifies the site and helps establish an encrypted connection. Revocation checking is a separate trust test: it asks whether the certificate authority or another trusted revocation mechanism has marked that certificate as no longer valid before its printed expiration date.

If Firefox receives a certificate that its revocation checks reject, it displays SEC_ERROR_REVOKED_CERTIFICATE and stops the connection. Mozilla’s security guidance explains that Firefox blocks these connections to help protect your personal information. The block can prevent credentials, payment details and other data from being sent to a certificate that should not be trusted.

A revoked certificate is not the same condition as an expired certificate, a certificate that is not yet valid, a hostname mismatch or a system-clock error. Those conditions can produce different error codes and require different fixes. Start by recording the exact code rather than treating every certificate warning as a cache problem.

First, capture the warning details
- On the Firefox warning page, select Advanced.
- Copy the complete error code, the site hostname and the certificate details shown on the page. Note the issuer, validity dates and any text identifying a proxy or security product.
- Record whether the address is a public website, an internal company service, a development server or a device on your local network.
These details determine who can actually fix the problem. A visitor can repair a local configuration, but cannot make a website’s revoked server certificate trustworthy from the browser.
Find out whether one site or many sites are affected
Open two or three unrelated HTTPS websites that you normally trust. Do not use the result from one page alone: a single broken site can have a server-side problem, while a network-wide interception issue can affect many domains.
| Pattern | Most likely area | Who can act | Security impact of testing | Durable fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Only one hostname fails | That site’s certificate, chain or deployment | Website owner, hosting provider or certificate authority | Keep Firefox’s block in place | Correctly issued replacement certificate installed by the operator |
| Many unrelated HTTPS sites fail on one computer | Local clock, browser profile, HTTPS interception, malware or security software | You, your security administrator or IT support | Diagnostic changes only; do not turn off validation permanently | Correct local or security configuration |
| Many sites fail for everyone on one network | Proxy interception, filtering gateway or enterprise certificate policy | Network or IT administrator | Use an approved test account or network; do not bypass policy | Correct gateway certificate and trust deployment |
| Only Firefox fails while another browser works | Firefox profile, local certificate store, extension or Firefox-specific policy | You or your administrator | Profile and extension tests are reversible | Clean profile or corrected local trust configuration |
When only one website shows the error
Confirm the scope without bypassing the warning
Try the same hostname in another up-to-date browser only as a comparison. A second browser may use different revocation behavior or a different local trust path, so a successful load there does not prove that the certificate is safe. You can also check the site from a separate, trusted network. Never enter a password or payment information on a page that another test has shown to be presenting a revoked certificate.

If the failure follows the hostname across devices and networks, the operator needs to inspect the server certificate. Common operator-side causes include a certificate that was revoked after a key or domain-control incident, a replacement that was not deployed to every server, an incomplete intermediate chain, or a hostname configured with the wrong certificate. The browser cannot repair any of these conditions.

Contact the operator safely
Use a known support address or status page, not a contact link from a suspicious warning page. Tell the operator the hostname, the exact Firefox code and the time of the test. Avoid sending passwords, private keys or browser certificate exports. If the site is a work or school service, report it to the administrator rather than trying to add a local exception.
When many unrelated sites fail
Inspect HTTPS scanning and interception
Some antivirus, endpoint-security and enterprise products inspect encrypted traffic by placing themselves between Firefox and the website. They may install a local certificate and generate replacement certificates on the fly. A damaged, expired or incorrectly deployed interception certificate can make Firefox report trust failures across many sites.
Open the security product’s settings and look for labels such as HTTPS scanning, encrypted-traffic inspection or web protection. Do not permanently disable protection just to make a page load. If your organization manages the computer, ask IT whether interception is required and whether its root certificate needs to be redeployed. On a personal computer, use the product’s documented repair or update procedure, then restart Firefox and test again.
Check proxy and VPN settings
A proxy or VPN can terminate and recreate HTTPS connections. In Firefox, open Settings → General → Network Settings → Settings and review whether Firefox is using a manual proxy, an automatic configuration URL or system proxy settings. If you did not configure the entry, do not delete it blindly on a managed device; ask the administrator first.

Temporarily disconnect a personally configured VPN or proxy and retest one trusted site. This is a diagnostic comparison, not permission to evade a company gateway. Restore the approved configuration after testing. If the error disappears only when the tunnel is disconnected, the VPN or proxy provider must correct its certificate handling.
Consider malware or an unwanted local certificate
Unexpected interception, unexplained proxy changes and failures on many unrelated sites justify a malware check using your established security software. Do not infer that a certificate warning alone proves infection. A legitimate security product, parental-control filter or corporate gateway can create similar symptoms.
Check the computer’s date, time and time zone
- Open the operating system’s date and time settings.
- Verify the calendar date, clock time and time zone, and enable the normal automatic synchronization option if your environment permits it.
- Close and reopen Firefox, then test the site again.
Mozilla documents incorrect-clock problems primarily for expired, not-yet-valid and OCSP time errors. Correcting the clock is necessary for certificate validation, but it cannot make a certificate that is genuinely revoked valid. If the same revoked-code message remains after the clock is correct, continue with the scope-based steps instead of repeatedly changing the time.

- Open Firefox’s menu and choose Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security, scroll to Certificates, then choose View Certificates or Manage certificates, depending on your Firefox version.
- Review the certificate authorities and personal certificates. Compare the issuer and name with the security product, employer or service that installed it.
- Delete or distrust only an outdated or untrusted local entry that you recognize and no longer need. If it belongs to an organization, obtain approval before changing it.
- Restart Firefox and test again.
This step changes Firefox’s local trust data; it does not replace the certificate delivered by the website. If the server is presenting a revoked certificate, the operator still has to replace it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repair Firefox only after checking the certificate cause
Browser repair can resolve profile corruption, an extension conflict or damaged cached data. It cannot turn a revoked server certificate into a trusted one. Use these tests in order so that you can identify what changed.
Clear cached site data
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies & Site Data, choose Clear Data, select the cached web content option and confirm. Clearing cookies can sign you out, so save any work first. Restart Firefox and retest. A cache clear is useful for stale page content, but it is not a direct repair for certificate revocation.
Use Troubleshoot Mode
Open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then Troubleshoot Mode and restart when prompted. This temporarily disables extensions and some customizations. If the warning disappears only in this mode, re-enable extensions one at a time and identify the conflict. Do not leave a security extension disabled without understanding the protection you have removed.

Refresh, reinstall or create a new profile
If Troubleshoot Mode changes the result, Mozilla’s general repair sequence includes refreshing Firefox, reinstalling it, or creating a new profile. Back up bookmarks, passwords and other data according to your normal process before a refresh or profile change. Install Firefox from Mozilla’s official distribution channel, then test with the clean profile before restoring extensions and custom certificate settings.
A clean profile is a diagnostic boundary: if the new profile fails on the same site with the same revoked code, the cause is probably outside the old profile or is on the server.
Do not bypass a revoked-certificate warning
Firefox may provide no override for revoked or other critical certificate failures. That behavior is intentional. Do not disable certificate validation, alter hidden security preferences or add a permanent exception for a public site merely to remove the warning.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Never bypass the block for banking, email, shopping, health, government or work systems.
- Do not install a certificate supplied through an unsolicited pop-up or message.
- Do not treat a successful connection in another browser as proof that Firefox is wrong.
- If an administrator gives you a temporary diagnostic instruction, obtain the exact scope and rollback steps, and restore normal validation afterward.
A narrowly controlled development environment can have its own test certificate policy, but that is different from overriding a revoked certificate on a public service.
If you operate the website
The visitor cannot repair a revoked server certificate. The operator, hosting provider or certificate authority must issue and deploy a replacement.
- Confirm the affected hostname and identify every server, load balancer, CDN edge or staging endpoint that can answer it.
- Contact the certificate authority or hosting provider to revoke-and-reissue or replace the affected TLS certificate. Follow the authority’s identity and domain-control checks.
- Install the replacement certificate with its complete intermediate chain. A leaf certificate without the required intermediates can still fail validation.
- Verify that the certificate’s subject or subject-alternative names match the exact hostname, including the chosen subdomain.
- Reload or restart the relevant service and propagate the configuration to every endpoint.
- Test from more than one network and with more than one browser. Confirm that the old revoked certificate is no longer being served by a fallback listener, proxy or CDN cache.
Keep the private key protected, follow your certificate authority’s incident guidance and document the replacement date and endpoints changed. If only one regional or backend server still presents the revoked certificate, users may continue to see intermittent failures until that endpoint is corrected.
Why common suggested fixes fail
| Suggested action | Why it may appear to help | Why it is not a real fix |
|---|---|---|
| Clear Firefox cache | Removes unrelated stale page data | Does not change the certificate served by the website |
| Change the system clock | Corrects some validity-period errors | Cannot reverse a certificate-authority revocation |
| Use another browser | Different browsers may handle revocation data differently | Leaves the underlying trust failure unresolved |
| Disable HTTPS scanning permanently | Removes one interception layer | Weakens security and may violate an organization’s policy |
| Add a permanent certificate exception | May suppress a warning in less severe cases | Creates an unsafe trust decision and may not be offered for critical failures |
| Reinstall Firefox | Can repair damaged program files or profiles | Cannot repair a revoked certificate on a remote server |
A practical decision path
- Read the code. Confirm that it is
SEC_ERROR_REVOKED_CERTIFICATE, not an expiration or clock code. - Test scope. Compare unrelated HTTPS sites and, when safe, another network or browser.
- One site only: keep the block, report the hostname and code, and wait for the operator to replace the certificate.
- Many sites: check the clock, proxy or VPN, HTTPS interception, managed certificates and malware, then test Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode.
- Firefox only: inspect recognized local certificates, extensions and the profile; use refresh, reinstall or a new profile only after documenting your settings.
- Site owner: obtain a correctly issued replacement, install the complete chain on every endpoint and retest.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems, clean temporary and cache files, review settings and vulnerability issues, and log app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary; no tool repairs every certificate or browser failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
A revoked certificate is a trust failure, not a normal cache problem. Keep Firefox’s protection enabled, separate one-site failures from network-wide failures, repair only local causes you can identify, and have the site owner replace the certificate and complete its chain.
