One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf screenshots are not working in Windows, first identify the failed step: the shortcut, screen selection, clipboard, file save, or OneDrive sync. Press Windows + Shift + S, test a paste into Paint, and open Snipping Tool from Start. These checks quickly show whether Windows captured an image but simply did not save it where you expected.
Start here: find the step that is failing
Windows screenshots can follow different paths. A capture may open the snipping overlay, copy an image only to memory, open in Snipping Tool for editing, save a file, or synchronize that file to OneDrive. Test the paths separately instead of treating every failure as a broken screenshot feature.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Select a region and watch for the Snipping Tool notification or editor.
- If nothing appears, open Start, type Snipping Tool, open it, and choose New. This bypasses a possibly faulty keyboard shortcut.
- If you used Print Screen, open Paint and press Ctrl + V. A successful capture may be on the clipboard without creating a file.
- If the image is in Paint but missing from OneDrive, troubleshoot saving and synchronization as separate problems.
Understand what each Windows capture method does
| Method | What it captures | Where the result goes | Best diagnostic use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | A selected region of the screen | Clipboard and the Snipping Tool workflow | Tests the snipping overlay without depending on Print Screen |
| Print Screen | A screen capture; behavior depends on its Windows setting | Clipboard, or the screen-snipping flow if configured | Tests the physical key and its configuration |
| Alt + Print Screen | The active window | Clipboard | Tests a smaller capture path for one window |
| Snipping Tool opened from Start | Available region, window, or full-screen modes | Snipping Tool editor and its save workflow | Bypasses a problematic shortcut or key |
Fix Windows + Shift + S not working
Open Snipping Tool directly
Open Start > Snipping Tool, then select New and make a snip. If this works, the application is reachable and the problem is probably limited to the shortcut, keyboard, or an interaction with another program. Save the image from the Snipping Tool window.
Try the shortcut again and watch for the right result
After pressing Windows + Shift + S, the screen should present a selection interface. Select an area, then look for the notification and open the image in Snipping Tool. Microsoft describes the captured snip as being copied to the Snipping Tool window, where it can be edited or saved. A dimmed screen alone does not mean a file was written.

Test with another keyboard only as a diagnosis
If Snipping Tool works from Start but the shortcut never responds, test the same shortcut with another keyboard if one is available. This distinguishes an application problem from a keyboard or layout problem; it does not mean you need to buy a replacement keyboard.
Fix the Print Screen key not working
Check the Print Screen setting
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Check Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
Windows can change what the key does with this setting. If you expect Print Screen to copy an image directly, test it by opening Paint and pressing Ctrl + V. If you want it to open the snipping interface, enable the setting and test the key again. Test Windows + Shift + S separately so you know which path is failing.
Use Alt + Print Screen for one window
With the target window active, press Alt + Print Screen, switch to Paint, and press Ctrl + V. This captures the active window to the clipboard and is a useful smaller test when a full-screen capture seems unreliable.
Check laptop and compact-keyboard layouts
Some laptops do not have a dedicated Print Screen key, or place the function behind an Fn layer. Read the legends on your keyboard and follow the combination documented for that device. There is no universal Fn combination: hardware and keyboard layouts vary. If the key is shared with another function, try the documented Fn version and compare it with Windows + Shift + S.

When the screenshot is captured but you cannot find it
Paste into Paint before searching folders
Print Screen commonly places the image on the clipboard rather than saving a visible file. Open Paint, press Ctrl + V, and use Paint’s save command to choose a folder and image format. This single test answers “Where did my screenshot go?” without relying on an automatic save location.

Open the Snipping Tool notification
For a snip made with Windows + Shift + S, select the notification that appears after capture. The Snipping Tool editor lets you annotate and save the image. If you close the notification without saving, repeat the capture and use the editor’s Save or Save As command.
Check the Screenshots folder only after confirming the save path
When Snipping Tool is configured for automatic saving, check the Screenshots folder. If you used Paint or Save As, the file is wherever you selected instead. Do not assume that every capture method uses the same folder.
Clipboard and clipboard history are different
Test the ordinary clipboard
Press Ctrl + V in Paint after making a capture. This tests the current clipboard directly. It is the correct check when you only need to know whether the latest image exists in memory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Turn on clipboard history when you need older captures
Press Windows + V. Clipboard history is optional and is not enabled by default. If Windows prompts you, choose the option to turn it on. An empty history does not prove that no screenshot was captured: history and the basic clipboard are separate, so still test Ctrl + V in Paint.
OneDrive: troubleshoot saving and syncing separately
Find the local file first
Before changing OneDrive, confirm that Snipping Tool or Paint actually saved an image. Check the folder shown in the Save dialog or the Screenshots folder used by your capture workflow. If no local file exists, this is a Windows capture or save issue, not a OneDrive issue.

Use Pictures folder backup instead of the old screenshot toggle
Microsoft Support states: “The ‘Save screenshots to OneDrive’ feature is no longer available in the OneDrive settings.” For screenshot backup, Microsoft currently directs users to include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup. Save or move your screenshot into that backed-up folder, then allow OneDrive to synchronize it.
Make sure OneDrive is running
If the OneDrive icon is absent from the taskbar, open Start, search for OneDrive, and launch it. Sign-in, organization policy, or account restrictions can affect synchronization, so work or school devices may require an administrator’s help.
Reset OneDrive only when synchronization itself is failing
A OneDrive reset can resolve sync problems, but Microsoft says it causes a full synchronization and resets sync connections. Treat it as a later step after confirming the local file, checking that OneDrive is running, and considering account or work/school management constraints. Resetting OneDrive will not repair a Print Screen key or a capture that never reached disk.
Symptom-by-symptom troubleshooting
The shortcut appears to do nothing
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and select New.
- Test Windows + Shift + S and Print Screen independently; they have different documented behavior.
- On a laptop, inspect the key legends and use the device-specific Fn combination.
- If the app works but the physical key does not, test another keyboard to isolate the key or layout.
The screen dims, then the image disappears
- Look for the Snipping Tool notification and open the capture in its editor.
- For Print Screen, paste into Paint with Ctrl + V.
- Use Snipping Tool’s Save or Save As command and choose a known folder.
Clipboard history is empty
- Press Windows + V and enable history if Windows offers that option.
- Test the current clipboard separately by pasting into Paint.
- Make another capture after history is enabled if you need it to appear in the history list.
The image is local but absent from OneDrive
- Confirm the file’s local folder and whether that folder is included in OneDrive backup.
- Open OneDrive from Start if its taskbar icon is missing.
- Use the Pictures folder backup approach rather than looking for the discontinued screenshot-save toggle.
- Consider a reset only for a persistent sync failure, knowing it triggers a full sync and resets connections.
Keep the diagnosis efficient
Use the least complicated test that answers the next question. Start with Snipping Tool from Start, then test Windows + Shift + S, then test Print Screen with Paint. Once an image appears in Paint or the Snipping Tool editor, stop changing keyboard settings and focus on the save folder. Once a local file exists, stop repeating captures and investigate OneDrive. This prevents a cloud-sync problem from being mistaken for a broken screenshot shortcut.
Or skip the browser setup:
If what you need is a clean image of a web page rather than a capture of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It is not a replacement for Print Screen when you need an app window or the whole desktop, but it avoids opening a browser and manually cleaning the page.
