Then determine which problem you have: the screenshot was never captured, it was captured but saved somewhere unexpected (or copied to the clipboard), or the app cannot write to its destination. These failures have different fixes, and screenshot folders are not the same across platforms.
Start by identifying what failed
Before changing settings, try to establish whether a screenshot exists and where it went. A missing file does not necessarily mean the capture failed: some shortcuts copy an image to the clipboard, and destinations can be changed from their defaults.
- Identify the device and OS version. Note whether you are using Windows 10/11, macOS, an iPhone and its iOS version, or an Android model and version.
- Repeat the capture and watch for a result. Look for an editor window, a temporary thumbnail, a notification, or a clipboard confirmation. If the app shows the capture, the capture worked; investigate saving or destination next.
- Check the likely destination and clipboard. Use the platform-specific paths below. If the image may have been copied, paste into an image-capable app or document.
- Read any error literally. A message about access or writing points to the destination or permissions. No visible capture may instead mean the shortcut did not activate, or the app prevents capture.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Snipping Tool captured the image, but no file is visible
When Snipping Tool opens a captured snip in its editor, use Save as Image, choose a folder and filename, and save. You can also use Ctrl+S. Microsoft says Snipping Tool automatically saves snips to its Screenshots folder; its Settings let you change automatic saving behavior or the default folder. Check that setting rather than assuming every snip went to the same place. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
The Windows shortcut may have saved elsewhere—or copied instead
If you used Windows logo key + PrtScn, open File Explorer and check Pictures > Screenshots, the location Microsoft documents for that shortcut. If the keyboard has no PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on some hardware. By contrast, pressing PrtScn by itself can copy the screen to the clipboard rather than create a file. Paste into Paint or another image app to confirm. Windows reports a write or access problem
Check that the target folder exists and that your account can create files there. App access to a picture library can also affect writes: Microsoft’s permissions guidance explains that denying write access to a library can leave an app able to write only to a unique folder within that library. Review Windows camera and picture-library permissions if the issue appears to involve app access.
Microsoft separately gives steps for checking the save location, creating a missing Camera Roll folder, and verifying Write permission in guidance for the Windows Camera app. Those Camera Roll instructions are specific to that app; they are not a guaranteed Snipping Tool repair. Do not create or change folders blindly for a different screenshot route. See Microsoft’s Camera-app troubleshooting guidance.
Mac
Check Screenshot’s destination
Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot, then choose Options and inspect the save destination. The default is the desktop, but the destination can be changed. The Options menu can also set screenshots to go to the clipboard instead of the desktop; in that case, paste the image into an app rather than searching for a file. Only one app window refuses to capture
If other screenshots work but a particular app’s window does not, the app may block screenshots. Apple gives Apple TV as an example of an app that may not allow its window to be captured. That is a capture restriction, not a destination or disk-write failure.
iPhone
Find the screenshot in Photos
Open Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. Apple’s documented location is useful when the screenshot was taken successfully but is not visible among recent photos. The post-capture controls vary by iOS version: iOS 26 displays screenshot tools including a save control, while iOS 18 and earlier show a temporary thumbnail. Follow the controls shown by the installed version rather than expecting the same workflow on every iPhone. See Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions.
If no screenshot appears
Take another screenshot and watch for the version-appropriate post-capture interface, then check the Screenshots media type in Photos. If the capture controls appear but a save action is missing or fails, note the iOS version and the exact message; the cited Apple instructions establish the location and version differences, but do not identify one universal repair for every save error.

Android
Android screenshot destinations and controls can vary by manufacturer and OS version. The authoritative general guidance available here does not establish one universal fix for a “can’t save” screenshot message. Do not assume that clearing system storage, changing special permissions, or deleting cache is necessary or safe for every Android phone.
To get device-specific help, record the phone’s manufacturer and model, Android version, exact error text, the screenshot method used, and whether other files can be saved to the same storage. Check the manufacturer’s support instructions for that exact device and version before changing system storage or permissions.

Common errors and practical fixes
“I took it, but it is nowhere in my usual folder”
First check the configured destination, not just the folder you normally use. On Windows, Snipping Tool’s default folder can be changed, while Windows logo key + PrtScn uses Pictures > Screenshots. On Mac, Screenshot Options shows the destination; the default is the desktop. On iPhone, use the Screenshots media type in Photos.

“Nothing saved, but I can paste the screenshot”
The image was copied to the clipboard. This is documented behavior for Windows Print Screen and for Mac Screenshot when the clipboard destination is selected. Paste it into an image editor and save it explicitly.
“The screenshot app says it cannot write”
Use a destination folder that exists and allows your account to write. If the issue is on Windows and seems specific to an app, examine its picture-library access. Avoid treating Camera Roll-specific Camera app repair steps as a universal fix for Snipping Tool.
“Only protected video or one app fails”
That can be an intentional capture restriction. On Mac, Apple identifies Apple TV as an example. A different save folder will not solve a window capture that the app disallows.

“It is an Android phone and I cannot save screenshots”
There is not enough device-independent guidance to prescribe a safe universal system change. Gather model, Android version, exact message, and whether other files save; then use the phone maker’s instructions for that configuration.

No. Some screenshot routes copy the image to the clipboard instead, so it must be pasted into an app and saved.
