SCCM error 0x80004005 is not a single, diagnosable fault. It is a generic failure wrapper, so the reliable fix is to identify the deployment phase and then read the first specific error immediately before 0x80004005 in the relevant log. The spelling 0X080004005 in the title has an extra zero; Configuration Manager documentation normally uses 0x80004005. Confirm the exact value in your log before troubleshooting.

For operating-system deployment and task-sequence failures, start with smsts.log. For software-update scan failures, start with WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log. The sections below map each failure phase to the checks that can actually resolve it.

What SCCM error 0x80004005 means

Configuration Manager uses 0x80004005 as a generic or unspecified failure result. A Microsoft Q&A response describes it as a generic error that can represent access denied, but the code alone does not identify whether the underlying problem is networking, certificate trust, missing content, permissions, Windows Update, or a failed task-sequence action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the Task Sequence Wizard, the code commonly appears after the client cannot contact or select a management point while retrieving policy. The same wrapper can also be returned while downloading content, installing an application, restarting, or scanning for software updates. Treat it as the final symptom, not the diagnosis.

Confirm the code and preserve evidence

  • Copy the complete hexadecimal value from the on-screen message and the log. If the screen says 0X080004005 but the log says 0x80004005, use the log value.
  • Record exactly where the failure happened: PXE startup, bootable or prestaged media, policy retrieval, content download, application installation, reboot, or software-update scan.
  • Save the relevant log before retrying. A second attempt can overwrite the lines that explain the first failure.
  • Do not begin with a generic client reinstall, registry edit, or cache deletion. Those actions can remove evidence while leaving the real fault unchanged.

Choose the right diagnostic branch

The failing phase determines which log and infrastructure to inspect. Use this table before changing anything:

Where the error appears First log to inspect Primary checks
PXE, bootable media, or prestaged media while retrieving policy smsts.log Management-point DNS and reachability, HTTPS trust, root CA in media, time, site assignment, and management-point URL
Task-sequence content download smsts.log Distribution-point availability, boundary mapping, content distribution, permissions, and package filenames
Application or package installation smsts.log plus the installer’s own log when available The first failed task-sequence action, content access, and the application’s installation result
Software-update scan WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log Software update point, WSUS synchronization, proxy or firewall access, and Windows Update policy values
Failure after a restart or at an otherwise unidentified step smsts.log The last completed action and the first specific error before the wrapper

Read the logs for the first real error

  1. Open the log for the phase you recorded. For an operating-system deployment, use smsts.log. For an update scan, open both WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log.
  2. Search for 80004005 and move upward. The useful line is usually the first specific failure immediately before the final wrapper, not the last line that repeats the wrapper.
  3. Classify that preceding line. Look for wording that indicates a name-resolution or connection failure, certificate or TLS validation, access denied, missing content, hash mismatch, Windows Update service failure, or a failed command.
  4. Correlate the timestamp. Match the error to the task-sequence step or update-scan operation that was running at that time. A stale error elsewhere in the log is not proof of the current cause.
  5. Retry only after recording the evidence. If the same specific error returns, compare the new timestamp and determine whether the failure is device-specific, model-specific, boundary-specific, or affecting many clients.

For update scans, WUAHandler.log records what the Windows Update Agent reported, while WindowsUpdate.log often contains the lower-level detail needed to explain that result. Read the two logs together rather than treating the wrapper in WUAHandler as a complete diagnosis.

Fix policy-retrieval failures

If the Task Sequence Wizard says it could not retrieve policy or could not contact or select a management point, work through these checks in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Verify DNS and network reachability

  • Confirm the deployment device has a valid IP address, gateway, and DNS servers in the preinstallation environment or Windows session where the failure occurs.
  • Check that the configured management-point name resolves to the expected address.
  • Verify that routing and firewall rules permit the device to reach the management point on the protocol and port used by your site.
  • Test from the same deployment context. A management point reachable from an administrator’s workstation may still be unreachable from a PXE or boot-media network segment.

2. Validate HTTPS and certificate trust

When the site uses HTTPS management points, the deployment environment must trust the issuing certificate chain. Check that the certificate is valid for the management-point name, has not expired, and chains to a trusted root. Also verify that the device’s clock is accurate; a large time difference can make an otherwise valid certificate appear invalid.

Microsoft documents a specific media scenario in which media created at a central administration site did not contain the root CA required by HTTPS management points. In that case, the documented remedy is to create bootable or prestaged media at a primary site so the required trust information is included. This is a targeted fix for that media and PKI arrangement, not a universal answer for every 0x80004005 report.

3. Check the root CA in deployment media

Inspect the bootable or prestaged media configuration and confirm that the root certificate authority needed by the HTTPS management point is present. If the media was generated from the wrong site or before a certificate change, recreate it at the applicable primary site and test with a newly prepared device.

4. Confirm time synchronization

Synchronize the device’s date and time with the environment used for certificate validation and authentication. Recheck the log after correcting the clock; certificate-related failures often produce a more specific preceding error than the generic wrapper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Verify site assignment and management-point selection

Confirm that the client or deployment process is assigned to the intended Configuration Manager site and that the management-point URL shown in the log belongs to that site. A device in the wrong site or boundary can be directed to a management point it cannot use.

Fix task-sequence content-download failures

When the wrapper appears while downloading a package, application, boot image, or other task-sequence content, the management point may be healthy; the failure can be limited to content location or access.

Confirm distribution

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, verify that the affected package or application is distributed to the distribution points available to the device.
  2. Check the content status for errors and confirm that distribution completed rather than remaining in a pending state.
  3. If content was recently changed, allow distribution and validation to finish before testing again.

Check boundaries and distribution-point selection

Verify that the device’s IP subnet or Active Directory site is included in the correct boundary group and that the group references distribution points containing the requested content. A client can report a generic failure when it has no usable content location, even though the package exists elsewhere in the hierarchy.

Check read permissions

Confirm that the identity executing the task sequence can read the content from the selected distribution point. Review the specific access-denied line in smsts.log and compare it with a known-good device in the same boundary. Avoid granting broad permissions as a first response; identify the account and share or service endpoint named by the log.

Consider filename and hash issues in legacy environments

Microsoft documents an older Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 case in which extended-ASCII characters in filenames caused downloads and content-hash validation to fail, surfacing as an 80004005 error. If you are troubleshooting that legacy scenario, rename affected files using simple characters or apply the hotfix documented for that release. Do not assume this historical issue explains a current-branch deployment unless the log shows a filename or hash mismatch.

Fix software-update scan failures

If the failure occurs during a software-update scan rather than an operating-system task sequence, use the Windows Update branch.

1. Read both update logs

Start with WUAHandler.log to see the result returned by the Windows Update Agent, then use WindowsUpdate.log to find the detailed service, connection, or scan error behind it. Locate the first specific failure before the generic 0x80004005 result.

2. Verify the software update point and WSUS synchronization

  • Confirm that the client is assigned to the intended software update point.
  • Check that the update point is synchronized and not reporting a synchronization or database error.
  • Verify that the update classifications and products required by the deployment are available.
  • Compare the failing client with another client in the same site to determine whether the problem is local or infrastructure-wide.

3. Check proxy and firewall access

Ensure that the client can reach the software update point and any upstream WSUS endpoints through the configured proxy and firewall. Authentication, inspection, or blocked ports can produce a generic task-sequence result while the detailed connection failure appears only in WindowsUpdate.log.

4. Review policy registry values

Compare the Windows Update policy values on the affected device with those delivered by Configuration Manager. Look for an incorrect update-server URL, conflicting policy, or values that point the client to an unavailable service. Correct the policy source rather than repeatedly forcing scans.

5. Reset the Windows Update Agent data store only when evidence supports it

Microsoft’s software-update guidance recommends resetting the Windows Update Agent data store only after troubleshooting indicates corrupted or missing components. A reset is not a general 0x80004005 cure: perform it only when the update logs show datastore corruption or a related component problem, and follow your organization’s recovery procedure so update history and state are handled deliberately.

When the error occurs during an application, command, or reboot step

A task sequence can pass policy retrieval and content download, then return the same wrapper from an individual installation or command. In that case, identify the exact step that was running, inspect its return code and command output, and check the application’s own log if it provides one. Confirm that the step’s content is available and that the execution identity has the required rights. A reboot-related occurrence should be correlated with the last successful step and the first post-reboot error in smsts.log; do not treat the reboot itself as proof of a management-point problem.

Use scope to narrow the cause

Observed scope Likely direction for investigation
One device only Device networking, clock, certificate store, local policy, or hardware-specific behavior
One hardware model Model-specific drivers or a task-sequence branch that runs only for that model
Every device in one boundary Boundary-group assignment, distribution-point reachability, firewall routing, or local network services
Many sites or all clients Management-point, software-update-point, WSUS, certificate, or hierarchy-wide configuration
Only PXE or media deployments Media creation site, root CA inclusion, WinPE networking, or deployment-time certificate trust

This scope check prevents a local fix from masking an infrastructure problem. If several clients fail at the same timestamp and phase, preserve one complete log from each and compare the first specific error rather than comparing only the shared 0x80004005 line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the repair without losing the trail

  1. Correct one identified cause at a time—for example, recreate media with the required root CA, repair a boundary assignment, distribute missing content, or correct the update-point policy.
  2. Repeat the same deployment phase with a clean test device or a controlled retry.
  3. Confirm that the previous specific error has disappeared from the new log, not merely that the final wrapper changed.
  4. Complete the next task-sequence step or update scan and watch for a new, unrelated error.
  5. Document the phase, log line, environmental scope, change made, and result so the same failure can be recognized quickly if it returns.

If the wrapper remains after the targeted correction, return to the first specific error. There is no universal registry repair or client reinstall that resolves every instance of 0x80004005.
