SBOX_FATAL_MEMORY_EXCEEDED means a page, report, or browser component used more memory than Edge allowed to its sandboxed process. Start by opening the page in an InPrivate window, disabling extensions, and checking whether one site or workload is responsible. Then update Edge and endpoint-security software, reduce heavy video or WebGL work, and use Edge Task Manager and Windows Resource Monitor to find the process consuming memory. Upgrade RAM only when measurements show that the computer is genuinely short of memory; it is not a guaranteed cure for a leaking page, extension, browser defect, or security-software conflict.
The sequence below separates a site-specific failure from a browser-wide or hardware-capacity problem, so you do not make risky changes such as disabling Edge’s sandbox without evidence.

What SBOX_FATAL_MEMORY_EXCEEDED means
Edge uses Chromium’s sandbox to isolate renderer and other browser processes. The message appears when the affected sandboxed process reaches the memory allowance available to it. A Microsoft Q&A explanation states: “It means that the report used more memory than permitted for the sandboxed process.” That wording matters: the error does not automatically mean that every application on the computer has exhausted physical RAM, and it does not by itself prove malware.
The immediate trigger can be a very large report, a JavaScript memory leak, an extension, a browser bug, or a page doing demanding video or WebGL work. A security product that scans scripts can also interact badly with a browser process. If only one dashboard or report fails while ordinary sites work, the page’s workload or code is the leading suspect. If every site fails, local browser settings, an extension, a security module, or system-wide memory pressure deserves priority.

A 2021 Microsoft Q&A answer describes broad Chromium/Edge sandbox limits of roughly 4 GB to 16 GB. That is an explanatory range, not a published limit for every Edge build, Windows edition, device, or process type. Likewise, a 2022 Google Chrome Help Community post from a Dell Windows 8.1 user mentioned a 12 GB computer; that is a user configuration, not a benchmark or a recommended minimum for Edge.
There is no single Edge-version-specific Microsoft procedure that fixes this code in every case. Community and console reports are useful for finding patterns, but they are anecdotal rather than controlled tests. Use the diagnostic branches below instead of assuming that one popular tip applies universally.
Choose the right branch before changing anything
Record what you were doing when the crash occurred, then classify it on three axes: scope, trigger, and persistence. The combination points to the most efficient first fix.

Step-by-step fixes
1. Reproduce the problem in InPrivate
- In Edge, press
Ctrl+Shift+N, or open the three-dot menu and choose New InPrivate window. - Open the same page, report, or stream without signing into unrelated services. InPrivate starts with extensions generally unavailable and a cleaner session.
- Use the page long enough to reproduce the error. Note whether the failure still occurs, whether it takes longer, and whether the same tab is implicated.
If the page works in InPrivate, the normal profile is contributing to the failure. That does not identify a particular extension yet, so continue with a controlled extension test rather than enabling everything at once.

2. Disable extensions and add them back methodically
- Enter
edge://extensionsin the address bar, or open the three-dot menu, choose Extensions, and select Manage extensions. - Turn off every extension, then reload the affected page in a normal window.
- If the error disappears, enable one extension at a time and repeat the same workload. Leave the extension that reproduces the crash disabled and check for an update or a replacement.
- If disabling extensions changes nothing, leave them off while you test the next branch; this prevents a second variable from hiding the cause.
A reset can help when a profile contains an unexpected setting. Open edge://settings/reset and choose Restore settings to their default values. Review the items Edge says will be reset before confirming. A reset can affect startup behavior, new-tab settings, search settings, pinned tabs, and extensions, so record anything you need first. It does not make a faulty site’s JavaScript efficient, and it is not a reason to skip the InPrivate comparison.
3. Reduce the affected site or report’s workload
When one report or dashboard is the only trigger, work around its peak allocation while you gather evidence for its owner.
- Narrow the date range, filters, or geographic scope before loading the visualizations.
- Open fewer visuals or pages at the same time and close duplicate copies of the report.
- Use pagination or an export for a very large table instead of rendering every row in one view.
- Close background tabs that show the same live dashboard or stream.
- If the site offers a lighter report, basic HTML view, or lower-detail mode, use it for the test.
Report the exact URL or report name, the action that precedes the crash, the approximate data range, your Edge version, and whether InPrivate changes the result. A site owner can then look for oversized queries, JavaScript exceptions, or a leak that grows each time a visual refreshes. If the same page fails for several people, a site-side fix is more plausible than a RAM purchase.
4. Update Edge, Windows, and endpoint-security software
- Open
edge://settings/help. Edge checks for updates and displays the installed version. Install an offered update, then choose Restart when prompted. - Close all remaining Edge windows and start a fresh session. A renderer that has accumulated memory may not release it until the browser restarts.
- Install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update, following your organization’s change-control rules if this is a managed PC.
- Open your endpoint-security product and update its engine, definitions, and modules. Do not assume that pausing protection is a safe permanent fix.
A historical 2020 incident illustrates why the security-software step matters. An ESET support representative said the problem was fixed in Script scanner module 1069 and instructed users to restart Chrome after the module update. That module number belongs to that old incident; it is not a current Edge requirement or a promise that every SBOX_FATAL_MEMORY_EXCEEDED case is caused by ESET. The practical lesson is to update the security product and restart before drawing conclusions from a temporary workaround.

5. Lower video, WebGL, and graphics pressure
Streaming and graphics-heavy pages can allocate substantially more renderer memory than text pages. Test one change at a time so you know which workload matters.
- Choose a lower playback resolution and disable high-quality or enhanced processing options.
- Reduce the number of simultaneous streams, video walls, or animated dashboards.
- Close WebGL games, 3D viewers, and other graphics tabs while testing the affected page.
- Stop long-running verbose logs in DevTools. An open Console or Network recording that retains large amounts of output can increase memory use.
- If the service offers a different codec, stream profile, or basic player, test that less demanding option.
These changes reduce the allocation requested by the page; they do not repair a leak. If memory continues to climb until the tab fails even at a modest resolution, preserve the reproduction details for the site or player developer.
6. Find the process that is consuming memory
Do not guess from the number of open tabs. Measure which tab, extension, browser process, or unrelated application is growing.

Shift+Escto open Edge’s browser task manager. If the shortcut is unavailable, open the three-dot menu, choose More tools, and select Browser task manager. - Sort by the Memory column. Watch the values for at least a few minutes while reproducing the action. A process that grows continuously is more suspicious than one that briefly spikes and falls.
- Record the process name, tab title, extension name, and approximate memory value. Select a nonresponsive tab or extension and choose End process only when you accept that the page may lose unsaved work.
- Open Windows Resource Monitor by pressing
Win+R, enteringresmon, and pressing Enter. On the Memory tab, compare total physical memory, the In Use amount, available memory, and applications with unusually large working sets. - Close an unrelated application that is consuming substantial memory, then retry the Edge test. If another program is the main consumer, Edge may simply be the first process to hit its own sandbox allowance.
Take a screenshot or write down the observations before ending a process. Those details are more useful to a site administrator, browser support team, or security vendor than a statement that Edge “ran out of memory.”

7. Clear only the relevant site data when isolation points there
Stale site data is not a universal explanation, and clearing it will not cure a JavaScript leak. Use it as a low-risk profile test after recording your sign-in and offline-data needs.
- Open
edge://settings/siteDataand search for the affected domain. - Remove data for that domain only, rather than deleting every site’s cookies and storage.
- Close and reopen the tab, sign in again if necessary, and reproduce the same action.
If the error returns immediately on a fresh session, stop repeating cache-clearing cycles and move to the site-workload, update, or memory branches.
8. Consider RAM only after measuring capacity
More physical memory can provide headroom when Resource Monitor shows that Windows and several applications are close to exhausting available RAM. It cannot correct a page that leaks memory, an extension that keeps allocating, a browser defect, or a security-software conflict. Treat an upgrade as a capacity decision, not as a guaranteed repair.
Before buying laptop memory, verify the exact computer model, supported memory type and speed, maximum capacity, number of slots, whether any memory is soldered, and whether your Windows edition and organization allow hardware changes. Match modules according to the manufacturer’s service documentation. A seller’s generic “laptop RAM” description is not enough to establish compatibility.

The 12 GB configuration mentioned in a 2022 community report shows only that one user had that amount installed when seeking help. It does not establish a minimum for Edge or prove that moving to a particular capacity will stop this error. If the machine has plenty of available memory while the same tab crashes, investigate the page or process instead of upgrading.

Do not disable the sandbox
Starting Edge with a --no-sandbox switch removes a security boundary that helps isolate browser content. It may alter symptoms, but it increases exposure and is not a normal repair. Do not add the switch to a shortcut, scheduled task, or policy just to suppress this message.
Do not assume a larger paging file solves it
Virtual-memory settings can affect overall Windows pressure, but a sandboxed process can still reach its own allowance. Changing the paging file without measuring system behavior can complicate diagnosis and does not address a leaking page or extension.
Do not repeatedly disable antivirus protection
A security scanner can be involved, as the historical module example shows, but the durable action is to update the product and document the result. Leaving protection disabled creates a different problem and can hide the real incompatibility.
Do not buy RAM before identifying the trigger
If one report fails on several well-equipped computers, more memory on your machine will not repair the report. If every site fails only after hours of use, first check for a growing extension or browser process. Hardware is the final capacity branch, not the opening guess.
What to do when the error survives a clean test
After updating, restarting, disabling extensions, and testing InPrivate, create a concise incident record:
- Exact error text, date, and local time.
- Edge version from
edge://settings/helpand Windows edition. - Whether the failure affects one domain or all browsing.
- Whether video, WebGL, a report refresh, a download, or another action triggers it.
- Edge Task Manager and Resource Monitor observations.
- Whether a security-product update or restart changed the behavior.
- Steps that reproduce the crash from a fresh browser start.
Send site-specific cases to the site or report owner, including the smallest reproduction that still fails. For browser-wide cases, use Microsoft’s Edge support channels or your organization’s administrator with the same record. Avoid uploading confidential report data; describe the filters and workload without exposing customer information.
