Start by identifying the storefront and operating system, then match the controller to that edition. Protect the save with both manual and automatic saves, and connect online before trying to load data after an offline reinstall.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis
Before changing files or reinstalling anything, write down the game edition, storefront, operating system, and the exact symptom. The same title can behave differently in a Steam build and a Windows 10/11 build, even on the same computer.

- Identify the platform. Record whether the game came from Steam or another Windows distribution, and whether you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Identify the controller connection. Note whether it is a USB gamepad, a wireless pad with a USB receiver, or another device, and whether the game sees it at all.
- Separate focus problems from compatibility problems. If the game works while focused but stops responding after you switch windows, treat it as a background-input issue rather than a dead controller.
- Protect the save. Complete an in-game automatic save event when possible, then create a manual save through System Settings before experimenting.
- Check whether the failure began after reinstalling. A save that vanished immediately after an offline reinstall has a specific update-related remedy.
- Keep the escalation evidence. If a crash continues after updates, a restart, and a reinstall, prepare MSInfo and DxDiag files for Square Enix support instead of repeatedly deleting save data.
This sequence prevents a controller change from destroying the only usable save and prevents a file operation from masking a platform or update problem.

Square Enix distinguishes the two common Windows controller APIs. Its official compatibility statement says the Steam version accepts both DirectInput and XInput gamepads, while the Windows 10/11 version accepts only XInput gamepads. That distinction is the first decision to make when a port ignores button presses.

A controller can be powered, visible to Windows, and still unusable by the game if its API does not match the edition. For a Windows 10/11 port, begin with an XInput-compatible USB gamepad rather than trying to force a DirectInput-only device. On Steam, a DirectInput pad is not automatically a problem because that build supports both interfaces.
Confirm the storefront before changing settings
Do not apply Steam-specific fixes to a non-Steam Windows build. The Desktop Layout setting described below exists in Steam Controller Settings; it is relevant when the game is running through Steam and loses input while unfocused. If the game is the Windows 10/11 edition, concentrate first on using an XInput device.
Use a simple isolation test
- Close the game completely.
- Connect the controller directly to the PC, preferably by USB for the first test.
- Start the game and test input while its window is focused.
- Switch to another window and return to the game. If input stops only after the switch, continue with the background-input section.
- If the game never responds on Windows 10/11, repeat the test with an XInput-compatible pad before investigating saves or reinstalling.
This test does not prove that every button is mapped correctly; it only separates an API or focus issue from a problem that occurs even when the game is active.
Fix a Steam controller that stops working in the background
Square Enix documents a specific Steam failure mode: while the game is running in the background, the controller may no longer control it. The remedy is to allow the controller to be used as PC controls through Steam’s Desktop Layout.

- Open Steam.
- Open Steam Controller Settings.
- Find the setting that allows the controller to be used for PC controls, labeled Desktop Layout.
- Enable that setting.
- Relaunch the game and test input both while the game is focused and after switching windows.
Desktop Layout addresses the background-input condition. It does not convert a DirectInput-only gamepad into an XInput device for the Windows 10/11 edition, and it does not repair a corrupted save. Keep those cases separate so that a controller setting is not mistaken for a data-recovery step.
If the setting does not solve the symptom
Repeat the focused-window test. If input fails even while the game is focused, return to the API table: Steam supports both DirectInput and XInput, while the Windows 10/11 edition requires XInput. If input works when focused but fails only after minimizing or changing windows, describe that exact sequence when contacting support; it is more useful than reporting that the controller is simply “not working.”
Protect saves before troubleshooting
Classic ports can save at more than one point in the game. Square Enix guidance describes automatic saves at events such as quest completion and a manual save command in System Settings. Use both mechanisms before changing controllers, reinstalling, or attempting recovery.
Make a manual save
- Open the game’s System Settings menu.
- Choose the manual save command.
- Wait for the save operation to finish before closing the game.
- Record which slot or save entry you used so you can distinguish the new test save from older data.
Allow automatic saves to finish
When a quest or another event triggers an automatic save, remain in the game long enough for the operation to complete. Do not treat an interrupted or half-finished save as proof that the underlying file is safe. A manual save gives you a deliberate restore point; the automatic save provides an additional fallback when the game creates one.

Do not overwrite the only copy during testing
If a save is already difficult to load, avoid replacing every slot with new tests. Keep at least one untouched entry while you test the controller, update the game, or reconnect to online services. The exact file location and backup procedure differ by port, so do not delete or replace files until the individual title’s support article identifies the correct location.
Understand cloud-save limits before moving a save
Cloud synchronization is limited by operating system. Square Enix states that CLOUD SYNC transfers saves between Android devices or between iPhones. Android-to-iPhone transfers, iPhone-to-Android transfers, and transfers involving other platforms are incompatible.

Use the same mobile operating-system family when you expect CLOUD SYNC to restore a save. A successful sign-in or visible cloud option does not make an Android save readable on an iPhone, nor does it make a mobile save compatible with a PC port. Keep the original device and its local data until the destination device has successfully loaded the transferred save.

Recover a save that disappeared after reinstalling
If you reinstalled the game, launched it while offline, and then found that existing saves were unavailable, Square Enix gives a direct remedy: connect online and update the game before attempting to load the save.

- Close the game.
- Reconnect the PC or device to the internet.
- Start the storefront or game launcher and allow the title to update fully.
- Launch the updated game and try the load operation again.
- Do not delete, replace, or rename save files while this update-related recovery is in progress.
The online update step is specifically associated with saves unavailable after an offline reinstall. It is not a universal fix for every corrupted save, and it does not expand CLOUD SYNC compatibility across Android, iPhone, and other platforms.
Why a universal save-folder answer is unsafe
Classic ports do not share one documented save directory. The path can vary by title, edition, storefront, and operating system. Because the official guidance does not establish a universal folder, avoid copying a path from another game or deleting a folder simply because its name looks similar. Consult the support article for the exact title before making a file-level backup or replacement.

Work through the least destructive checks in order. First confirm that the game is current and that you have completed the online update step if the problem followed an offline reinstall. Next confirm that you are loading the save on a compatible platform: CLOUD SYNC is limited to Android-to-Android or iPhone-to-iPhone transfers.

- Preserve the original. Do not overwrite the only save with a new game or a test slot.
- Update online. Reconnect and install the latest available game update before loading again.
- Use the same platform family. A mobile operating-system change is not a supported CLOUD SYNC transfer.
- Check the title-specific support instructions. Use the game’s own documentation for its save location and any permitted backup procedure.
- Escalate without altering the file. If the save remains unavailable, contact Square Enix support and describe the platform, reinstall condition, update status, and exact load behavior.
A controller that fails to respond and a save that fails to load can occur at the same time, but they require different evidence. Resolve the input API or background-focus issue separately from the save investigation.

Fix crashes that continue after controller and save checks
For PC crashes, Square Enix’s troubleshooting sequence is straightforward: update the game, update the graphics drivers, restart the computer, and reinstall the game if necessary. If the crash continues, submit diagnostic files with a support request.
- Update the game. Install the current patch through the relevant storefront or launcher.
- Update graphics drivers. Apply the current driver offered for your GPU.
- Restart the PC. Test again after the restart rather than stacking several changes without checking.
- Reinstall if required. Protect manual and automatic saves first, and follow the title-specific save instructions before removing the installation.
- Gather MSInfo and DxDiag. These Windows diagnostic reports give support technical information about the system and graphics configuration.
- Submit a Square Enix support request. Include the game edition, operating system, controller API or model information, the point at which the crash occurs, and the MSInfo and DxDiag files.
Do not present a crash as a save corruption problem unless the game reaches the load screen and fails on a particular save. A crash during startup, after switching windows, or when a controller is connected points to a different troubleshooting path.

Prevent the next failure
- Keep the storefront and operating system recorded with the game version.
- Use an XInput-compatible controller for Windows 10/11 editions.
- On Steam, enable Desktop Layout if you regularly switch away from the game while using a controller.
- Create manual saves through System Settings and let automatic saves complete at events such as quest completion.
- Keep mobile transfers within Android-to-Android or iPhone-to-iPhone pairs.
- Before reinstalling, locate the title-specific save instructions instead of assuming a common folder.
- If an offline reinstall leaves saves unavailable, connect online and update before trying file changes.
- Keep MSInfo and DxDiag available when a repeatable PC crash survives the standard update and reinstall sequence.
The reliable order is platform first, input API second, save protection third, and diagnostics last. Matching the controller to the edition fixes compatibility failures; Desktop Layout addresses Steam background input; an online update addresses saves unavailable after an offline reinstall; and MSInfo plus DxDiag give support the evidence needed when crashes persist.
