How to Fix Safari “Cannot Open the Page Because Too Many Redirects Occurred”

Safari shows “Cannot Open the Page Because Too Many Redirects Occurred” when a website keeps sending Safari from one URL to another without reaching a final page. Apple documents a current limit of 16 redirects; exceeding it or detecting a loop stops the load. The cause may be the website’s redirect rules, stale cookies and website data, a login session, a VPN or Private Relay condition, or Safari privacy settings. Test the page on another network and browser first, then clear data for the affected site before changing broader privacy settings.

What the Safari redirect error means

A redirect is an instruction from a web server telling the browser to request a different address. Redirects are normal when a site sends visitors from an old address to a new one, enforces HTTPS, or completes a sign-in. The error appears when Safari never receives a final page.

Apple’s Foundation documentation describes the condition as either a detected redirect loop or an exceeded redirect threshold, currently 16 redirects. A loop can look like example.com sending Safari to login.example.com, which sends it back to example.com, repeatedly. Safari stops instead of continuing indefinitely.

For web-login flows, Auth0 identifies three common contributors: a redirect loop on the service, outdated browser cache or cookies, and Safari’s cross-site tracking prevention. Those categories are also useful when diagnosing other websites, although the exact cause depends on the site.

First determine whether the problem is Safari, your device, or the website

Do these low-risk checks before deleting all browsing data. They separate a local condition from a server-side configuration problem.

Check What to do What the result suggests
Another connection Open the same URL over cellular data or a different Wi-Fi network. Works elsewhere: your original network, DNS path, VPN, or filtering may be involved. Fails everywhere: continue testing for a browser or website problem.
Another browser Try the URL in another browser on the same device. Only Safari fails: stored Safari data or a Safari privacy setting is more likely. Every browser fails: the website or network is more likely.
Another device Open the page on a different phone, tablet, or computer if available. Failure across devices and networks strongly points to the website’s redirect configuration.
Scope of the failure Open two or three unrelated websites. One domain fails: concentrate on that site’s data and login state. Many domains fail: investigate network, VPN, Private Relay, or device settings.

Write down whether the failure affects one address or every address, whether it occurs only during sign-in, and which network was in use. That information prevents you from making broad changes when the fault is limited to one site.

Fix Safari redirects on iPhone or iPad

Use these steps in order. After each step, retry the original URL in a new Safari tab.

1. Test cellular data or another Wi-Fi network

  1. Disconnect from the current Wi-Fi network, then open the page over cellular data. If cellular data is unavailable, join a different trusted Wi-Fi network.
  2. Retry the page. If it works only on the alternate connection, restart or reconfigure the original router, DNS filter, or network security product rather than repeatedly clearing Safari.

Apple recommends this comparison because a network can alter, block, or mishandle requests before Safari receives the page.

2. Check for a VPN

Open Settings and review the VPN control or the VPN app that manages the connection. Temporarily disconnect the VPN and retry the site. Apple warns that a VPN can cause some apps or websites to block content from loading. Restore the VPN after testing if it is not responsible; do not leave a security or work connection disabled without a reason.

3. Restart the iPhone or iPad

Turn the device off, wait briefly, turn it on again, and test Safari. A restart clears transient networking and browser processes without deleting your saved website data.

4. Clear Safari history and website data

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Safari.
  2. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  3. Choose the confirmation option, then reopen Safari and visit the site.

This removes cookies, cached files, and other stored website data that can preserve an invalid login or redirect state. It also removes browsing history and can sign you out of websites, so have your sign-in method available before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Make sure JavaScript is enabled

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced.
  2. Turn on JavaScript if it is off.
  3. Close and reopen the affected tab, then test again.

Many authentication pages use JavaScript to complete a redirect. Enabling it will not correct a server-side loop, but it rules out a disabled-script condition.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

6. Test iCloud Private Relay

If only one website is affected, Apple recommends checking Private Relay as a diagnostic. Open Settings, tap your Apple Account, choose iCloud, and review Private Relay. Temporarily turn it off, retry the site, and then turn it back on if the result is unchanged. Private Relay changes how your traffic is presented to websites, so treat this as a short test rather than a permanent privacy decision.

7. Test Prevent Cross-Site Tracking

Auth0 reports that Safari’s Prevent Cross-Site Tracking setting can contribute to redirect errors in web-login flows. In Settings > Apps > Safari, temporarily turn the setting off, remove the affected site’s data using the previous step, and retry the login. Restore the protection after testing if it did not solve the problem. Leaving it disabled changes Safari’s privacy behavior across sites.

Fix Safari redirects on a Mac

Mac Safari lets you remove one domain’s stored data first, which is less disruptive than deleting everything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Disconnect a VPN and compare networks

Disconnect any active VPN from its menu or app, then retry the URL. If possible, connect the Mac to another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. A page that works only after changing networks indicates a local connection or filtering issue rather than a Safari redirect loop.

2. Remove the affected domain’s website data

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Choose Safari > Settings (called Preferences in some older macOS releases).
  3. Open Privacy, then choose Manage Website Data.
  4. Search for the affected domain, select its entry, and click Remove. If the site uses more than one related domain for authentication, remove each relevant entry.
  5. Click Done, quit Safari, reopen it, and try the URL again.

Removing a site’s data deletes its cookies and local storage. It may sign you out and change that site’s behavior, but it preserves unrelated domains’ data.

3. Remove all Safari website data only if necessary

If the site-specific removal fails, return to Safari > Settings/Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data and choose Remove All. Confirm, quit Safari, reopen it, and retry. Apple notes that clearing history can remove webpage history, cookies, and website data, and that websites may behave differently afterward. Use this broader reset only when the targeted removal did not help or when several sites are failing.

4. Test cross-site tracking as a diagnostic

In Safari > Settings/Preferences > Privacy, temporarily clear Prevent cross-site tracking, then retry the affected login. If the loop stops, the setting is involved in that authentication flow. Turn the protection back on after the test if it was not the cause. A successful test does not prove that disabling the setting permanently is the right solution; ask the site owner to correct its sign-in flow instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Confirm JavaScript is available

Open Safari > Settings/Preferences > Security and verify that Enable JavaScript is selected where that control is present in your macOS version. Reload the page. JavaScript can be required by a login form, but it cannot repair a redirect rule that points between URLs indefinitely.

When Safari login keeps looping

Login loops often result from a stale session cookie: Safari sends an old session to the service, the service rejects it and redirects to sign-in, and Safari returns to the same state. Remove the affected domain’s data first, then start a fresh login from the site’s home page rather than an old bookmark or saved deep link.

If the service uses several domains, such as a main site and a separate identity provider, deleting only one domain may leave the invalid session intact. On Mac, remove each related entry shown in Manage Website Data. On iPhone or iPad, the system-level Clear History and Website Data action is broader and removes stored data for all sites.

Do not repeatedly submit credentials while the browser is looping. After clearing data, close old tabs, open a new private or regular tab as appropriate, and complete the sign-in once. If the loop returns in multiple browsers, stop changing local settings and report the exact login URL and time to the service operator.

Privacy and data trade-offs before you reset Safari

Action Scope Effect on data or privacy Best use
Remove one Mac domain One selected site and related entries May sign you out of that site; leaves other sites’ data intact. First choice when one domain fails.
Clear all iPhone/iPad history and website data All Safari sites and browsing history Signs you out broadly, removes cookies and website data, and can alter site behavior. When targeted diagnosis is unavailable or several sites are affected.
Remove all Mac website data All stored Mac Safari site data Broad sign-outs and loss of local site preferences. Last resort after removing the affected domain.
Disable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking temporarily Safari’s cross-site privacy protection Reduces a privacy safeguard while disabled. Short diagnostic for a login flow; restore afterward if unrelated.
Disable Private Relay temporarily iCloud traffic-relay behavior Changes how websites see your connection while disabled. Short diagnostic when one site fails.

How to tell when the website must be fixed

A website-side loop is likely when the same URL fails in Safari and another browser, on more than one device, and over different networks. The page owner controls the redirect destinations, allowed callback URLs, HTTPS rules, and session handling; Safari cannot correct an invalid server configuration.

Auth0 states that the page owner must correct a redirect loop in its service. Apple likewise advises contacting the website developer when a particular page still will not load after troubleshooting. Send the owner the exact URL, your device and operating-system version, the browser version, whether the issue occurs before or after sign-in, and the networks and browsers you tested. Do not send passwords or session cookies.

If the site works in another browser but not Safari after its data has been removed, include that comparison in your report. It helps the owner distinguish a Safari privacy-compatibility problem from a universal redirect error.

A practical recovery order

  1. Confirm whether unrelated websites load.
  2. Try the URL on cellular data, another Wi-Fi network, or a different browser.
  3. Disconnect a VPN and retry.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Remove only the affected domain’s data on Mac, or clear Safari history and website data on iPhone/iPad.
  6. Verify JavaScript is enabled.
  7. Test Private Relay or Prevent Cross-Site Tracking temporarily, restoring each privacy setting after the test.
  8. Compare another device and browser. If the failure persists across them, contact the website owner.

This order starts with reversible checks, limits unnecessary sign-outs, and leaves server-side escalation until local causes have been tested.
