Microsoft Access run-time error 3078 means the database engine cannot find the table or query named by the operation. The dependable fix is to identify that exact object, confirm whether it exists locally or through a link, then correct the stale name, spelling, path, or reserved-word conflict in every place that refers to it. Work through the checks below in order; retest after each change so the next unresolved reference is clear.
What error 3078 means
Access displays 3078 when an operation refers to an input table or query that the database engine cannot resolve. Microsoft’s error reference describes it as: “The Microsoft Office Access database engine cannot find the input table or query.” The missing reference might be in a saved query, a form, a report, a lookup, a macro, or SQL assembled by VBA; it is not necessarily the object you were trying to open directly.

The name shown in the message is the most useful clue. Copy it exactly, including spaces, underscores and plural endings. A table that looks correct to you can still fail if the reference differs by one character, points to an object that was renamed, or is a linked table whose source file moved.

The object is absent from the current database
The named table or saved query may have been deleted, never imported into this copy of the database, or omitted when a file was distributed. An object can exist in another Access file while being absent from the file producing the error.

A table or query was renamed or deleted
Forms, reports, lookups, macros and other queries can retain an old object name after a table or query is changed. Opening the renamed object succeeds, but a dependent object still submits the former name and triggers 3078.
A linked table’s source moved
A linked table appears in the Navigation Pane, yet its data lives in another Access database or external source. If that file was moved, renamed, placed on a different drive, or made unavailable, the link can no longer resolve the input object.
The reference contains a spelling or syntax error
Differences in capitalization normally are not the issue, but spaces, underscores, punctuation, singular versus plural names and missing delimiters are. SQL generated in VBA can also contain a typo that is not visible in a saved query design.
The name conflicts with a reserved word or Access property
Names such as Date can be interpreted as a built-in function or property rather than an object identifier. Microsoft advises avoiding reserved words; if an existing name must remain, enclose it in brackets, for example [Date]. Renaming the object to a more specific name is safer for long-term maintenance.
Before changing anything: locate the failing reference
- Record the exact name in the 3078 message. Copy it rather than retyping it. If the message contains punctuation or brackets, preserve them.
- Look in the Navigation Pane. Check both Tables and Queries, and expand any groups or hidden sections used by your application. Compare the displayed name character by character with the message.
- Identify the object that launched the error. Note whether you ran a query, opened a form or report, refreshed a lookup, executed a macro, or clicked a button that runs VBA. This tells you where to inspect the dependency.
- Determine the source type. The reference may be a local table, a saved query, a linked table, a pass-through query, a form or report RecordSource, a control’s Row Source, a macro target, or SQL text assembled in VBA.
- Make a backup copy. Save a separate copy of the database before renaming objects, relinking tables or editing VBA. This gives you a recovery point if another dependency breaks.
Step-by-step repair procedure
1. Open the named object directly
In the Navigation Pane, double-click the table or query whose name matches the error. A local table should open in Datasheet view; a saved query should open or display its own error. If the object cannot be found in the pane, the current database does not contain it under that name.

- If the table is missing, import it from the correct database or relink it if it is meant to remain external.
- If the query is missing, re-create it or import the saved query from a known-good copy. Microsoft’s resolution guidance specifically identifies reimporting or recreating a missing query and reimporting or relinking a missing table as remedies.
- If you find an object with a similar name, do not assume it is interchangeable. Compare every character and confirm that its fields match what the dependent object expects.
Run the original operation after restoring the object. If 3078 disappears, the dependency was missing; if it remains, continue because another reference may still be unresolved.
2. Correct saved-query SQL
Open the query in Design view, then switch to SQL View. Search the FROM, JOIN, subquery and action-query clauses for the name shown in the error. Also inspect table aliases: a query can fail when a later expression uses an alias that was never declared or when a table name was changed in one clause but not another.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Copy the exact table or query name from the Navigation Pane.
- Replace stale or misspelled identifiers in SQL.
- Check spaces, underscores, punctuation and singular/plural forms.
- If the identifier is a reserved word, bracket it, such as
[Date], or rename the object and update every dependent reference. - Save the query and run it directly before reopening the form, report or macro that originally failed.
If the query uses a saved query as an input, open that underlying query as well. A top-level query may be written correctly while one of its source queries still points to a deleted or renamed table.
3. Check form and report RecordSource properties
A form or report can use a table, saved query or SQL statement as its RecordSource. In Design view, select the form or report itself—not a control—and open the Property Sheet. Inspect the Record Source property for the exact object name or SQL text from the error.
- If Record Source names a deleted query, restore or recreate that query.
- If it contains SQL, correct the table or query identifier in the SQL View or property expression.
- If a renamed field or table is referenced by calculated controls, criteria or sorting, update those expressions too; fixing only the RecordSource may expose a second stale reference.
Save the object, close and reopen it, and test the action that previously produced 3078. Opening the form or report after each edit helps isolate the first remaining failure.

4. Inspect control Row Source and lookup definitions
Combo boxes and list boxes commonly use a table, saved query or SQL statement in their Row Source property. In form or report Design view, select each relevant control and inspect Row Source. Also check lookup settings on table fields if the error appears while editing a record rather than opening a form.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the control that refreshes or opens when the error appears.
- Read its Row Source type and text.
- Open a named query directly, or run the SQL shown in the property.
- Replace stale object names and bracket reserved identifiers.
- Save the form and test the control again.
A form’s RecordSource and a control’s RowSource are separate dependencies. Correcting one does not automatically correct the other.
5. Review macros and button actions
A macro can open a query, apply a filter, or run an action whose SQL refers to an old table or query name. Open the macro in Design view and examine actions that specify an object, filter, where-condition or SQL expression. Update the identifier to the exact Navigation Pane name, then save and run the macro from its original entry point.
If a macro calls a form or report that itself has an invalid RecordSource or RowSource, repair that object as well. The macro may only be the place where Access first exposes the underlying problem.
6. Inspect VBA-generated SQL
When VBA builds SQL by concatenating strings, the failing name may not appear in any saved query. Open the Visual Basic Editor and search the project for the object name from the error, fragments such as FROM or JOIN , and code that assigns SQL to QueryDef.SQL, RecordSource or RowSource.

- Check each concatenated section for missing spaces, quotation marks or brackets.
- Confirm that variables containing table or query names hold the expected value at run time.
- Compare the generated text with a version that runs successfully in a new query’s SQL View.
- Use the debugger to pause immediately before execution and inspect the complete SQL string, not just the source fragments.
After editing code, compile or save the project as appropriate, then repeat the same user action. If the error changes to a different object name, repair that newly exposed reference next.
7. Repair a moved or broken linked table
A linked table can remain listed in the Navigation Pane even when its external file is no longer at the recorded location. Confirm that the source database or other external source exists and that you can reach it from the computer running Access.
- Open the Database Tools tab.
- Select Linked Table Manager.
- Select the affected linked tables and choose the option to update or relink their source information.
- Browse to the current external database file or enter the correct source details when prompted.
- Complete the relink, then open the linked table directly to verify that records are available.
If the external file was renamed or moved again, relinking must be repeated. If only some linked tables fail, repair those entries individually and retest the query or form that uses them. A link can also fail when a shared drive or network location is unavailable; restore access before changing object names.
8. Resolve reserved-word and property-name conflicts
Compare the object name with Microsoft’s reserved-word guidance. If a table or query uses a reserved term, bracket every reference consistently—for example, write FROM [Date] rather than FROM Date. Apply the same treatment in saved SQL, RecordSource, Row Source, macros and VBA strings.

Renaming is preferable when you control the schema. Choose a descriptive name that is not a function, property or common SQL keyword, then update all dependent objects. Rename only after making a backup and searching the database for references, because old names can survive in forms, reports, macros and code.

9. Investigate an Enter Parameter Value prompt
Access may display an Enter Parameter Value dialog instead of—or before—the 3078 message when an expression contains an unresolved name. Microsoft notes that this prompt often indicates an incorrect name. The text in the prompt is the identifier Access could not resolve.
- Write down the exact identifier shown in the dialog.
- Inspect the active query’s fields, criteria, calculated expressions and source objects for that spelling.
- Check control references such as
Forms!FormName!ControlNamefor a renamed form or control. - Inspect RecordSource and Row Source properties if the prompt appears while opening a form or report.
- Correct the reference, save, and rerun the operation.
Do not enter a value merely to dismiss the prompt; that can hide the naming error and produce incomplete or misleading results.

How to test each repair safely
- Close the object that failed and save the edited object.
- Open the repaired table or query directly. Confirm that it returns data or, for an action query, that its design opens without 3078.
- Open the dependent form or report. Test the specific control, filter or report section that previously failed.
- Run the original macro or button action.
- If another 3078 appears, record the new object name. It may be a second dependency that was hidden by the first failure.
Testing in this order distinguishes a repaired source object from a still-broken container property. It also prevents a chain of edits from obscuring which change solved which failure.

When the name looks correct but 3078 remains
Check the database copy you actually opened
It is possible to edit one copy while launching another from a shortcut, recent-file list or shared location. Confirm the file path and verify that your changes are visible after closing and reopening that same file.
Look for hidden or renamed dependencies
Search forms, reports, macros and VBA—not only the Navigation Pane. A visible table name can be correct while a RecordSource, Row Source or code string still contains the former name.
Check aliases and generated text
In SQL, distinguish an object name from an alias. In VBA, inspect the final string passed to Access. A variable can contain an unexpected trailing space, an omitted delimiter or a name from an old configuration even when the source code appears to use the right spelling.
Separate object errors from access-to-source errors
If a linked table opens only when the external source is available, restore that source or relink it before rewriting queries. Changing SQL cannot repair a link that points to a moved file.
Quick Recap
Prevention after the repair
- Use descriptive object names that avoid reserved words.
- When renaming a table or query, immediately inspect dependent forms, reports, macros, lookups and VBA.
- Keep linked source files in a stable, documented location and relink them with Linked Table Manager when that location changes.
- Test forms, reports and macros after schema changes instead of checking only the renamed table.
- Keep a backup before structural changes so a mistaken rename or import can be reversed.
Quick checklist
- Copied the exact name from the 3078 message.
- Confirmed whether that name exists in the current Navigation Pane.
- Opened the table or query directly.
- Checked saved SQL for spelling, syntax, aliases and reserved words.
- Inspected the form/report RecordSource.
- Inspected control Row Source and lookup definitions.
- Reviewed macro actions and filters.
- Searched VBA-generated SQL and inspected the final string.
- Verified external paths and used Database Tools > Linked Table Manager for linked tables.
- Retested after each correction and recorded any new unresolved name.
