Start with the low-risk sequence that addresses the most common causes: allow the Ruffed Up Demo to update, restart Steam, launch it from your Library, verify its files, update your operating system and graphics driver, and temporarily close overlays or other non-essential background tools. Then match the remaining symptom—crash before a window, a black window, an undetected controller, or input lost after Alt-Tab—to the targeted checks below.
There is no documented, universal Ruffed Up crash or black-screen cause. The demo is maintained, and a 16 August 2026 patch specifically fixed menu input breaking after the window lost focus, but that does not prove every launch or display failure has the same remedy.

What the Ruffed Up demo supports
Ruffed Up Demo is a free 64-bit demo from Elusive Games. Steam identifies it as app 4960360. Its listed desktop platforms are Windows and macOS; a Linux build is not listed. SteamDB records the most recent update as 14 October 2026, so checking for an unfinished download is the right first move when your installed copy behaves differently from current reports.

Identify exactly what is failing
Different symptoms point to different tests. Note what you see before changing anything, because “the game is broken” is not specific enough to choose a useful next step.

Run the standard recovery sequence
Perform these steps in order. After each one, launch the demo once and record whether the symptom changed. That prevents several simultaneous changes from hiding the actual cause.

Finish the demo update
Open Steam and wait for the Ruffed Up Demo download to finish. If Steam shows a queued, paused, or scheduled update, resume it. A current build matters because the developer has shipped fixes for menu focus and other demo defects.

Restart Steam and use the Library launch path
Exit Steam completely, start it again, open Library, select Ruffed Up Demo, and press Play. This clears a stale client session and ensures Steam applies the installed build rather than an interrupted launch shortcut.

Verify the installed files
In Steam, open Library, right-click Ruffed Up Demo, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the check complete and allow Steam to reacquire anything it reports as missing or damaged. Steam Support includes file-integrity verification in its launch troubleshooting guidance.

Update the operating system and graphics driver
Install pending Windows or macOS updates, then install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU. Restart the computer after those updates. Steam lists both operating-system and driver updates among standard remedies for games that will not launch; the available Ruffed Up information does not identify a particular GPU or driver version as a guaranteed fix.

Temporarily close non-essential software
Before launching again, close overlays, screen-recording and capture tools, hardware-tuning utilities, and other background programs that hook into games. Steam notes that conflicting non-essential software can stop a game from launching. Re-test with only Steam and the demo running, then restore tools one at a time if the problem disappears.

Confirm the platform
Check that you are running a supported Windows or macOS installation. Linux is not listed in the demo’s platform metadata, so a Linux launch problem cannot be evaluated as a supported native configuration from the information available.

Test the controller separately from the game
Open Steam’s controller settings and confirm that the device appears there. Connect it before pressing Play. Disconnect extra gamepads, virtual-controller software, steering wheels, fight sticks, and other input devices while testing, because a competing device can take the active slot or produce conflicting mappings.

Repeat the test once
Launch from the Library after each meaningful change. If the failure is unchanged after the sequence, stop making random configuration changes and collect the details listed in the reporting section.
Fix a crash before the game window appears
A process that exits immediately is different from a black window. Start with the update, restart, verification, driver, and background-software sequence above. Those are the documented general launch measures and do not assume a particular GPU, API, or launch option.
When verification reports damaged files
Allow Steam to replace the files, then restart Steam and launch again. If the same files are reported repeatedly, record that result and include it in a support report rather than repeatedly verifying without documenting the outcome.
When the process still exits immediately
Check whether the operating system and graphics driver actually completed their updates. Then perform one clean test with overlays, capture programs, and tuning utilities closed. If the demo still exits, note whether Steam displays an error, whether a window flashes briefly, and whether the behavior changes when no controller is connected. No published Ruffed Up guide currently provides a crash-log interpretation matrix, so avoid treating an unexplained event-log entry as a confirmed cause.

Do not infer a universal hardware fault
The available developer notes document gameplay and focus-input fixes, not a single crash fix that applies to every computer. A crash on one machine therefore does not establish that all players need a new GPU, a particular driver, or a special launch argument.
Fix a black screen
A black window can be a transient startup state, a display or overlay conflict, or a configuration-specific failure. The available sources do not identify one universal Ruffed Up black-screen cause, so use a controlled sequence instead of assuming the graphics hardware has failed.

Wait briefly after pressing Play, especially immediately after an update, to allow the window to initialize.

If it remains black, close the demo normally if possible. If it is unresponsive, use the operating system’s standard close control, then exit and restart Steam.

Launch again from Library, not from an old desktop shortcut, and observe whether the result is a black window, a visible menu, or an immediate process exit.

If the window is still black, verify files, update the operating system and graphics driver, and repeat the test with overlays and capture tools closed.

Record whether you hear audio, whether the cursor changes, and whether Alt-Tab can return focus. Those observations distinguish a running-but-unrendered window from a process that has already stopped and make a later report more actionable. Do not claim that a particular launch option, reinstall, or GPU driver is guaranteed to cure every black screen; no such universal workaround is established for this demo.
Fix a controller that Steam or the demo cannot see
Start with Steam detection
Connect the controller before launching Ruffed Up. In Steam’s controller settings, verify that the device is listed and responds to the built-in test or status indicator available for your model. If Steam cannot see it, the problem is upstream of the demo; focus on the cable, port, pairing, or device rather than changing in-game settings.
Remove competing inputs
Disconnect every other gamepad and virtual input device for the first test. Close remapping or virtual-controller utilities and reconnect only the controller you intend to use. This creates a known input path and avoids diagnosing a conflict as a missing Ruffed Up binding.
Use the supported DualSense path
The demo advertises DualSense support, including USB use. For a DualSense that is not detected, connect it with a known-good USB data cable directly to the computer, confirm it appears in Steam, and launch while it remains connected. A cable that supplies power but not data can light the controller without making it visible to Steam.
Separate a game problem from a hardware problem
If the controller repeatedly disconnects, try another USB port and a cable known to carry data. This is a hardware-isolation step, not a developer-confirmed Ruffed Up fix. If a second port and cable make no difference, document whether Steam loses the device as well; that distinction is more useful than simply reporting that “the controller does not work.”

Elusive Games’ 16 August 2026 patch states: “Fixed an issue where menu input would break after the game window loses focus.” If menus stopped responding after Alt-Tab on an older installation, first allow Steam to install that patch, restart Steam, and relaunch the demo. Test once by switching away and back.
If input still fails, close and relaunch rather than repeatedly switching focus. Then confirm the controller is visible in Steam and remove other input devices. The patch addresses the named focus-loss bug; it does not establish that every controller or every post-Alt-Tab failure has the same cause.
Use the patch history to decide what “up to date” means

Windows and macOS checks
Windows
Confirm that Windows Update has no pending restart, install the current graphics driver for the installed GPU, and retest with overlays and tuning tools closed. When reporting the issue, include the Windows version and driver version rather than only the computer brand.
macOS
Install available macOS updates, restart, and verify the demo files from Steam. Record the macOS version and whether the failure is a black window or an immediate exit. Because the demo’s listing names macOS but does not publish a detailed hardware compatibility matrix, avoid inferring support for every older Mac model.

Linux is not listed as a supported build in the demo metadata. If you are attempting to run it through a compatibility layer, report that environment explicitly; a native Linux fix cannot be inferred from the Windows and macOS listing.
Choose fixes by what they change

Report a failure that survives the sequence
The Steam discussion index includes a thread titled “Crashing on Launch,” but the indexed information does not expose one confirmed cause. A useful report should let another person distinguish a reproducible game defect from a local configuration problem.
- Operating-system name and exact version.
- GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- Whether the process exits, freezes, or leaves a black window.
- Whether audio, a cursor, or any menu response is present during a black screen.
- Controller model and connection type: USB, Bluetooth, or another method.
- Whether Steam listed the controller before launch and whether other input devices were disconnected.
- Whether the failure began after Alt-Tab or another focus change.
- Whether file verification reported and repaired anything.
- Whether updating, restarting Steam, and closing overlays changed the result.
Describe one reproducible sequence, such as “launch from Library with one USB DualSense connected, wait 30 seconds, then observe a black window.” Include the demo version or update date shown by Steam when possible. Avoid presenting a suspected GPU, driver, launch option, or reinstall as a guaranteed solution unless the developer confirms it.
