RtmCodecs.dll is a Microsoft Teams media component, not a normal Windows System32 file. When it appears as a faulting module, the dependable fix is to update Windows and Teams, repair or reinstall the official Teams package, and then check security, system integrity, drivers, and any managed-device policies that could prevent Teams media components from loading.

Do not download a replacement RtmCodecs.dll from a DLL or codec-download site. The file must match the Teams package and its SlimCore media engine; copying an unrelated build can create version, security, and startup problems.

What RtmCodecs.dll is

Microsoft Teams uses an operating-system-specific media engine called SlimCore. Microsoft describes SlimCore as the Teams media engine delivered in an MSIX package and automatically updated with new Teams versions. You can read the deployment details in Microsoft’s Teams VDI documentation.

Crash reports published on Microsoft’s support sites place RtmCodecs.dll inside Teams media files rather than in the normal Windows system directory. One classic Teams path is AppData\Local\Microsoft\Teams\current\resources\app.asar.unpacked\node_modules\slimcore\bin. Newer Microsoft Store Teams packages use a different package location. Microsoft examples include reports of Teams freezing during use at this Q&A thread and another report at this Microsoft Answers page.

The name in an Event Viewer crash entry identifies the module where Windows detected a failure. It does not prove that the file itself is missing or that replacing it separately will solve the problem. A damaged Teams package, an incomplete SlimCore update, a blocked MSIX installation, an audio or graphics driver conflict, third-party media software, or a security problem can all produce a crash naming the same module.

Confirm the exact failure before changing anything

First establish whether the error belongs to Teams and capture the path Windows reports. This prevents you from treating an unrelated file with the same name as a Teams problem.

  1. Reproduce the failure once, if possible. Note whether it happens when Teams starts, when you join a meeting, when a camera or microphone initializes, or after a call has been running for a while.
  2. Open Event Viewer by pressing Win, typing Event Viewer, and opening the result.
  3. Go to Windows Logs > Application, then look for an Error recorded at the time of the crash. Open the event and record the application name, faulting module name, exception code, Teams version, Windows build, and the complete path shown for RtmCodecs.dll.
  4. In Teams, open Settings and more (the three-dot menu), choose Settings, and open About Teams if that page is available. Write down the version before you repair or reinstall it.
  5. Check whether the reported path is inside a Microsoft Teams or SlimCore package. A copy found in a random download folder, a temporary archive, or a Windows system directory needs a security check rather than a replacement download.

Use the supported repair sequence

1. Install current Windows updates

Microsoft’s Windows media troubleshooting guidance starts with keeping Windows, media components, and device drivers current. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install the available updates, and restart even if Windows does not explicitly request a restart. A pending restart can leave Teams and its media package on different component versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the failure began immediately after an update, record the update date and Windows build before proceeding. Do not remove a security or quality update solely because a Teams crash names RtmCodecs.dll; first complete the application repair steps and check for a newer cumulative update.

2. Update Teams through its own update path

Open Teams, select Settings and more > Settings > About Teams, and use Check for updates or the equivalent update control shown by your edition. Close and reopen Teams when it reports that an update is ready. SlimCore is designed to update with Teams, so an application update is the supported way to obtain a matching media engine.

If Teams cannot stay open long enough to update, skip to the repair or reinstall step instead of downloading RtmCodecs.dll. The goal is to restore the complete, version-matched package, not just one file.

3. Repair or reset the installed Teams package

On Windows 11 and Windows 10 editions that expose app repair controls, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds). Find Microsoft Teams, open its Advanced options, and use these controls in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose Terminate if it is available, then start Teams again.
  2. Choose Repair. This attempts to correct the application without removing its stored app data.
  3. If the crash continues, return to the same page and choose Reset. Resetting can remove local application data, so expect to sign in again and recheck local Teams settings.

The exact controls depend on whether you have the Microsoft Store package, the current work or school package, or an older classic installation. If Advanced options, Repair, or Reset is not shown, do not improvise by replacing a DLL; proceed with an official uninstall and reinstall.

4. Reinstall Teams from an official Microsoft package

Uninstall the Teams edition listed in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and install Teams again using Microsoft’s official Store or Teams distribution channel for your account and edition. Reinstalling lets Windows restore the complete Teams and SlimCore package, including files that may have been deleted or only partially updated.

After installation, sign in, allow Teams to finish any first-run update, and test a one-to-one call before joining an important meeting. If more than one Teams edition is installed, remove the obsolete edition or ask your organization which package it manages; having two packages can make it difficult to identify which installation produced the crash path.

5. Check the reported file location and its signature

Use the path from Event Viewer, not a search result alone. A legitimate RtmCodecs.dll should be inside a Teams or SlimCore package directory associated with the installed application. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when it is present. An unexpected location, a missing signature, or a file that appeared after installing an untrusted codec or “DLL fixer” warrants a full security scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy a file from another computer, an older Teams backup, or a download site into the package directory. Even if the names match, the binary can require a different SlimCore build or Teams version.

6. Run a full security scan when the path or timing is suspicious

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan, and let it finish. Microsoft’s media troubleshooting guidance includes malware scanning among the checks for unexplained media errors; see Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance.

Run the scan especially when the DLL is outside a Teams package, the error followed a dubious download, browser warnings appeared at the same time, or other applications are crashing. Quarantine or remove anything your security software identifies, restart Windows, and reinstall Teams afterward so the application package is known to be complete.

7. Check Windows system files

If Teams still crashes after a clean reinstall, check the Windows component files that support audio, video, and application loading:

  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run sfc /scannow.
  3. Wait for the verification to finish, follow the result it reports, and restart Windows.
  4. Launch Teams and reproduce the same action that previously caused the crash.

System File Checker repairs protected Windows files; it does not replace a Teams package file. If SFC reports that it could not correct every problem, keep that result for your administrator or Microsoft support and continue with the Teams package and policy checks below.

8. Update audio, camera, and graphics drivers

RtmCodecs.dll belongs to the media path, so a failure that occurs only when a microphone, camera, screen share, or video stream starts can be triggered by a device driver even when the Teams package is intact. Install drivers from the computer, camera, audio-device, or graphics manufacturer, or use the driver channel managed by your organization. Restart after installing them and test the same call scenario.

Disconnect newly added USB audio or video devices temporarily and close other programs that hook into calls, record audio, apply virtual backgrounds, add camera effects, or install system-wide media filters. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for conflicting third-party media software. Remove or disable one suspect program at a time so you can identify the change that affects the crash.

Do not treat this as a generic codec-pack problem

A Teams report naming RtmCodecs.dll is different from a Windows Media Player message about a missing playback codec. Microsoft’s Codecs FAQ says: “Therefore, we strongly discourage you from installing these codec packs and recommend that you remove them if you have installed them and are having problems with the Player. Install codecs, filters, and plug-ins only from trusted sources, such as the provider’s official website.” Read the full warning at Microsoft’s Codecs FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install a “codec pack” to repair Teams unless your organization has specifically approved it for a documented compatibility reason. Codec packs can add filters that affect several applications and make a Teams media crash harder to isolate. If you already installed one and the crashes began afterward, uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and retest Teams.

Microsoft documents automatic codec downloads for the much older Windows Media Player 11 under Tools > Options > Player > Download codecs automatically; the procedure is described at this Windows Media Player article. That setting is not a repair for modern Teams or SlimCore and should not be used as one.

Understand the repair choices

Choice What it changes Why it is preferred or limited
Repair or reinstall Teams Restores the application package and its matching SlimCore media files. Preserves version matching and uses the supported deployment path.
Copy a standalone DLL Replaces one file without validating the rest of the package. Can introduce a mismatched version, an unsafe binary, or a new loading error; it is not a supported fix.
Remove a third-party codec pack Removes filters that may intercept media streams. Relevant when the timing points to the pack; it does not repair Teams by itself.
Update a device driver Changes the camera, audio, or graphics component used by calls. Important for crashes tied to hardware initialization, but unrelated to a damaged Teams package.

Follow the branch that matches your symptom

Symptom or evidence Next action
Teams crashes at launch and Event Viewer shows a Teams package path Update Windows and Teams, then use app Repair, Reset, or an official reinstall.
The crash happens when video, audio, or a camera starts After repairing Teams, update audio, camera, and graphics drivers and disable third-party media filters one at a time.
The file is outside a Teams or SlimCore location Run a full security scan, preserve the Event Viewer path, and reinstall Teams from an official source rather than replacing the file.
The problem appears only on a work virtual desktop Give the Event Viewer details to the administrator; local reinstall steps may not override VDI package or allow-list policies.

Additional requirements on VDI and managed computers

Teams deployments on virtual desktops add requirements that do not exist on a standard personal installation. Microsoft says the VDI plugin downloads the SlimCore media engine and that the package must be installed in a usable location. AppLocker or Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) rules, package-install restrictions, a read-only profile, or blocked network delivery can prevent SlimCore from arriving or updating even when the Teams interface itself is current. The relevant deployment guidance is in Microsoft’s Teams VDI documentation.

If you administer the device, verify the following without manually copying a DLL:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Teams VDI plugin and SlimCore MSIX deployment method match the Teams version approved for the environment.
  • The user can write to the package locations required by the deployment and the profile is not reverting those files at logoff.
  • Network controls allow the media-engine package to download and update.
  • AppLocker, WDAC, endpoint protection, and software-install policies allow the signed Teams and SlimCore packages.
  • The virtual desktop has the current audio, camera, and graphics integration components supplied by the virtualization platform.

If you are not the administrator, send the exact Teams version, Windows or virtual-desktop build, Event Viewer exception, and complete RtmCodecs.dll path to the help desk. A local DLL replacement can be removed at the next profile refresh and may violate the organization’s application-control policy.

Verify the repair and decide when to escalate

After each major change, test the same operation that caused the failure: start Teams, join a test call, enable the camera, unmute the microphone, and try screen sharing if those actions were involved. Check Event Viewer again rather than assuming success because Teams opened once. A successful test should complete the previously failing media action without a new RtmCodecs.dll event.

Escalate to your organization’s administrator or Microsoft support when a clean official reinstall still fails, SFC reports unresolved corruption, the event points to a protected or managed package, or the failure is reproducible across multiple Windows accounts and devices. Include the crash time, Teams and Windows versions, package path, exception code, recent driver or codec changes, and whether the failure occurs on a standard desktop or VDI session. This information lets support distinguish a damaged application package from a policy, driver, or service problem.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and record app crashes.
