If Roku streaming stopped working after you changed DNS, first undo that change at the router or ISP gateway, restart the network and Roku, and run Roku’s built-in connection test. That sequence is reversible and separates a DNS or router problem from a Wi-Fi, internet-service, device, app, or account problem. The timing may be a clue, but it does not prove DNS caused the failure.
Roku’s test checks two different links: whether the player can see and join your local network, and whether it can reach the internet. Use those results, plus a comparison with another device and—when supported—a wired Ethernet test, to choose the next step instead of repeatedly changing DNS values.

Start with the safest recovery sequence
Follow these steps in order. They preserve your Roku settings and make each result useful for narrowing the cause.
- Record what you changed. Note whether DNS was changed on the router, an ISP gateway, or a network-wide DNS service, and write down the previous values if you have them.
- Restore the previous DNS mode. Use the router, gateway, or service provider’s own instructions. Return to the old DNS addresses, or select automatic/provider DNS if that was the previous configuration.
- Restart the router or gateway. Save the change and use the manufacturer’s normal restart procedure so the new network settings are actually applied.
- Restart the Roku. Use its system restart control or disconnect power briefly, following the guidance for your model.
- Run the Roku test. On the remote, open
Settings > Network > Check connection. - Branch on the result. If Roku cannot join the local network, work on Wi-Fi credentials, signal, or hardware. If it joins but cannot reach the internet, test another device on the same router and investigate the router or ISP when that device also fails.
Do not keep swapping public DNS services while the basic connection is unverified. A change that appears to help can simply coincide with a router restart, a recovered ISP link, or a temporary service issue.

Why a DNS change can resemble a Roku failure
DNS is the name-resolution part of a network connection: it helps a device find the service associated with a domain name. Roku still needs a working local connection to the router, a usable route to the internet, and a functioning app or account. A DNS setting can therefore be one possible break in a chain, but it is not the only explanation for buffering, a store that will not load, or an app that fails.
Roku’s official connection-check description is precise: “The device will test whether it sees your network and whether it can reach the Internet.” Treat those as separate checkpoints. A player that cannot see the router has a local-network problem even if DNS is perfect. A player that reaches the internet but cannot open one app may be dealing with that service or with account linking rather than name resolution.
No published figure establishes how often DNS changes cause Roku failures. The most reliable conclusion comes from controlled comparisons: restore the known-good configuration, restart, test Roku, test another device, and compare Wi-Fi with wired networking when the model supports it.

Router or ISP gateway
Most home DNS changes are made in router-specific controls, not in a universal Roku menu. First identify the device that distributes network settings to Roku. It may be a standalone router, an ISP-provided gateway, or a managed network appliance. Use that device’s manual or support page for the exact login and menu path.
Router interfaces differ by model and firmware. One vendor’s instructions may place DNS fields in LAN or DHCP settings; that is an example, not a path you should copy to another router. Do not guess at labels, disable unrelated security controls, or change WAN and LAN values interchangeably.

Restore the previous values or automatic mode
- If you recorded the old primary and secondary DNS addresses, enter those values exactly as they were.
- If the old setup used Automatic, Obtain DNS automatically, ISP DNS, or similar wording, select that mode instead of entering a new address.
- If a network-wide DNS service was changed outside the router, use that service’s instructions to reverse the change, or ask the network administrator to restore the prior policy.
- Save the router configuration, then restart the router according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
The official Roku material does not document one universal on-device DNS rollback procedure. If you cannot identify where the change lives, stop changing settings and contact the ISP or network administrator rather than guessing.
What to note before leaving the router interface
Write down the router model, firmware label if shown, the DNS mode, and whether the change applies to the whole LAN or only one device. This record helps support staff distinguish a Roku-specific issue from a network-wide policy. Avoid deleting the previous configuration until streaming is stable.
Step 2: Read Roku’s connection test correctly
On the Roku remote, open Settings > Network > Check connection. The test reports whether the player can see and join the local network and whether it can reach the internet. Use the outcome as a decision point rather than treating a generic failure message as proof of DNS trouble.
| What the test indicates | What it means | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Roku cannot see or join the router | The failure is at the local network boundary. DNS is not yet the primary suspect because the player has not established a usable network connection. | Confirm the intended Wi-Fi name and password, check signal and obstructions, and restart the router and Roku. |
| Roku joins the network but cannot reach the internet | The local link works, but the path beyond the router is failing. DNS, router routing, an ISP outage, or a gateway policy are possible. | Test a phone or computer on the same router. If it also cannot open a public website, investigate the router or ISP. |
| Roku reaches the internet, but streaming or one app fails | The basic network path is working. The remaining issue may be app-specific, service-side, or related to the Roku account. | Test another channel or the Streaming Store and continue with app/account troubleshooting. |
If Roku cannot join Wi-Fi
Reconnect to the correct network and re-enter its password carefully. Check that you are not selecting a similarly named guest or extender network. Move the player temporarily closer to the router and remove obvious obstructions. Then run the connection test again.
If another device also has no internet
Open a public website on a phone or computer connected to the same router. If that device fails too, the problem is broader than Roku. Check the router’s status, the ISP’s outage information, and any gateway changes made during the DNS rollback. Keep Roku powered on while you investigate so you can retest after the internet connection returns.

Step 3: Restart, then reset Roku’s network connection
Normal restart
Roku recommends restarting the player and router for common connection problems. Restarting clears a temporary device state without removing your channels or account setup. Complete the router restart first, wait for its normal connection indicators, then restart Roku and run Settings > Network > Check connection again.

Network connection reset
If the player still fails after the DNS rollback and restart, reset only Roku’s saved network connection:
- Open
Settings > System > Advanced system settings. - Select
Network connection reset. - Choose
Reset connection. - Let Roku restart or return to its network setup screen.
- Select the correct Wi-Fi network, enter the password, and run
Settings > Network > Check connection.
This step removes the saved network relationship so Roku can obtain fresh network information from the router. It does not substitute for correcting a router or ISP outage; if other devices still lack internet access, resolve that first.
Step 4: Check Wi-Fi conditions separately from DNS
Use Settings > Network > About to review the current connection information and signal strength, then run the connection test. A weak or unstable radio link can produce buffering and failed channel launches even when DNS is normal.
Improve the temporary test conditions
- Move Roku and the router closer together for a test.
- Reduce walls, cabinets, large appliances, and other obstructions between them.
- Pause heavy downloads or uploads on other devices while testing.
- If your router offers both bands, try a supported 5 GHz network when the Roku model can use it.
Roku notes that model and channel compatibility matters. Some Roku models do not use certain DFS channels. Do not force a channel change based on a generic Wi-Fi guide; check the exact Roku model and the router’s supported channel options first.

Interpret the result after moving the devices
If streaming improves only when Roku is close to the router, distance, interference, or channel compatibility is more likely than DNS. If the failure is identical at close range and another device on the same network works normally, continue with Roku-specific and app-specific checks.
Step 5: Use Ethernet as a controlled comparison when supported
A wired test is useful only when the Roku model has an Ethernet port or supports a compatible adapter. Check the model’s specifications and adapter requirements before buying anything. Connect the player directly to a router LAN port, allow it to obtain a connection, and run Roku’s connection test.
| Comparison | Observation | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi fails; supported Ethernet works smoothly | Streaming becomes stable on the same router and internet service. | Wi-Fi signal, interference, placement, or channel compatibility is the leading area to investigate. |
| Wi-Fi and Ethernet both fail | The failure follows the Roku across connection types. | Check router/internet reachability, Roku network reset, app behavior, and account linking. |
| Model has no Ethernet support | No valid wired comparison is available. | Do not purchase an adapter without confirming compatibility; continue with Wi-Fi and connection-test diagnostics. |
An Ethernet cable is a diagnostic aid, not a way to reverse a DNS change. It cannot correct an incorrect router DNS policy or an ISP outage by itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Check speed only after the connection is stable
Roku’s connection-check documentation lists typical download-speed thresholds, while noting that individual apps may require different minimums. These figures are guidance, not evidence that DNS caused a failure.
| Playback target | Typical download threshold listed by Roku | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard definition (SD) | 3 Mbps | Roku Support figure; publication year not stated. |
| High definition (HD) | 5 Mbps | Roku Support figure; publication year not stated. |
| 4K Ultra HD | 25 Mbps or more | Roku Support figure; publication year not stated. |
Measure under the same conditions in which Roku streams, preferably when other household traffic is quiet. A speed result below the relevant guideline points toward capacity or service quality, but a result above it does not rule out packet loss, Wi-Fi instability, an app outage, or account trouble. App-specific requirements can differ from the general figures.

Step 7: Separate a Roku-wide problem from an app or account problem
Test more than one channel
If Roku’s test says it can reach the internet, open another channel or service. A single channel that fails while others play normally points away from a general DNS or Wi-Fi outage. Check the affected service’s own status information and troubleshooting guidance without changing the router again.
Streaming Store failures
An inaccessible Streaming Store is not automatically a DNS problem. Roku states that Store access can fail because of network trouble or an account-linking issue. If the connection test passes but the Store remains unavailable, verify that the Roku is linked to the intended account and investigate account status separately from router settings.
When only one app is affected
Record the app name, the exact on-screen message, whether other channels play, and whether the issue occurs on another device using the same service. Those details let the service or Roku support team distinguish a service outage from a device configuration issue. Do not factory-reset the player solely because one app is unavailable.

A practical decision matrix for persistent failures
| Roku result | Other device on same router | Ethernet result, if available | Most useful next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cannot join Wi-Fi | Works normally | Not tested | Verify Wi-Fi name/password, improve placement, inspect signal and supported bands, then reset Roku’s network connection. |
| Joins Wi-Fi but no internet | Also fails | Not tested | Investigate router or ISP reachability and confirm the DNS rollback was saved; do not treat this as Roku-only. |
| Joins Wi-Fi but no internet | Works normally | Not tested | Retest after network reset, confirm router DNS and DHCP settings, and check whether the failure follows Roku. |
| Internet reachable; one app fails | Service works elsewhere | Usually irrelevant | Investigate the app, service status, and Roku account link rather than changing DNS again. |
| Wi-Fi streams poorly | Other devices are fine | Wired stream is smooth | Focus on Wi-Fi placement, interference, band choice, and model-compatible channel settings. |
| Wi-Fi and supported Ethernet both fail | Other devices are fine | Also fails | Repeat the network reset, verify the router’s restored configuration, and escalate to Roku support if the problem remains. |
Factory reset is the final software step
Use a factory reset only after the DNS rollback, router and Roku restarts, connection test, network connection reset, Wi-Fi checks, and app/account checks have failed. A factory reset erases the Roku’s settings and requires its apps and preferences to be set up again. It is not a targeted DNS repair and should not be the first response to a post-change symptom.
Before resetting, make sure you know the Wi-Fi password and the Roku account credentials needed to sign in again. Write down any device-specific preferences you want to restore. Follow the reset procedure documented for your exact Roku model; do not interrupt power while the device is erasing and restarting.
How to document the problem for support
Support can work faster when you provide observations instead of only saying that DNS was changed. Record:
- The Roku model and software version, if shown in the system information.
- Where the DNS change was made and whether it was returned to automatic/provider DNS or the former addresses.
- The exact result of
Settings > Network > Check connection. - Whether another device on the same router can open a public website.
- Signal information from
Settings > Network > About. - Whether another channel plays and whether the Streaming Store is affected.
- Whether a supported Ethernet connection changes the result.
- The date and time, exact error wording, and what happened after each restart or network reset.
This record prevents a support session from repeating the same DNS edits and makes clear whether the failure is local, internet-wide, Wi-Fi-specific, Roku-specific, or limited to an app or account.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not assume that a symptom beginning after a DNS edit proves DNS is responsible.
- Do not copy a menu path from a different router model or ISP gateway.
- Do not change Wi-Fi channels blindly; check Roku model and DFS compatibility first.
- Do not buy an Ethernet adapter without confirming that the exact Roku model supports it.
- Do not factory-reset before preserving account credentials and trying the reversible steps.
- Do not use a single app or Store failure as proof that the whole Roku is offline.
