Start by correcting the script, then check the voice and language, apply the text-to-speech service’s pronunciation tools if needed, and listen to a short test render before regenerating the full voiceover. If the words are pronounced correctly but the result still sounds robotic, adjust delivery—such as pacing, pauses, or pitch—in small steps. The exact controls depend on the provider, model, language, and voice.
Why AI voiceovers mispronounce words or sound robotic
A speech generator works from both the text you provide and the voice and language settings you select. A typo, an ambiguous name, or a mismatch between the intended pronunciation and the chosen voice can produce an unexpected result. ElevenLabs identifies misspelling as a common cause and notes that pronunciation and accent can depend on the selected voice and language (ElevenLabs’ troubleshooting guidance).

A robotic-sounding result is a different problem: the words may be right while the timing or expression feels unnatural. AWS lists unnatural prosody or pacing among possible text-to-speech issues (Amazon Polly troubleshooting). There is no documented rate or pitch setting that reliably fixes every voice, so use short tests rather than applying a universal preset.
Fix the script and voice before adding pronunciation markup
Correct spelling and clarify ambiguous text
Check the exact word in the source text first. If the spelling is wrong, correct it and render again. ElevenLabs notes that its AI may pronounce misspelled text as written. If the spelling is correct but a name or technical term remains ambiguous, try placing it in a complete sentence so the model has more context; compare the word and surrounding phrase in the output.

Some services document alternative phonetic spellings as a workaround. Use that only if the result is acceptable in the final script: changing the visible spelling may also affect captions, subtitles, or on-screen text. Keep the written form intact where possible and use a pronunciation control when the service supports one.
Match the voice and language to the intended delivery
Confirm that the selected language and voice or accent fit the words and the audience. ElevenLabs distinguishes the language indicated by the text from the accent associated with the voice, and says both can affect how a word is spoken. Correct spelling alone does not guarantee the intended pronunciation.

| Service | Documented pronunciation options | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ElevenLabs | Its pronunciation guide documents native IPA support for Eleven v3 and SSML phoneme tags for Flash v2 and Turbo v2, including IPA and CMU options. It also describes alternative spellings as a workaround. (ElevenLabs pronunciation guidance) | Do not assume the same controls work in every ElevenLabs model. |
| Microsoft Speech | SSML phoneme elements and custom lexicons can map written forms to aliases or phonemes. (Microsoft phonetic sets; SSML structure; pronunciation with SSML; voice and locale guidance) | Phoneme and lexicon support depends on locale. Lexicon entries are case-sensitive; validate a custom lexicon before production use. |
| Google Cloud Text-to-Speech | Documentation describes inline IPA and X-SAMPA phonemes and custom pronunciation dictionaries. (Google SSML documentation; phoneme documentation; custom pronunciation dictionaries) | Google supports a subset of SSML; some elements are unavailable for some languages. |
| Amazon Polly | Polly accepts text or SSML, with documented controls for pronunciation and other aspects of speech. Pronunciation lexicons are also available. (Polly SSML documentation; managing lexicons) | A lexicon is applied only when its language matches the selected voice’s language. |
Use phonemes for an individual word
If the service supports phoneme markup for the selected model and locale, use it to specify how a particular word should sound. Follow that provider’s required alphabet and syntax exactly. Microsoft advises including human-readable speech as a fallback in SSML (Microsoft pronunciation guidance). Then validate the markup and render a short sample.
Use a lexicon or dictionary for recurring vocabulary
For names, product terms, or acronyms that recur in a project, a pronunciation dictionary or lexicon can save you from correcting each instance separately. The format and language-matching rules differ by service. Microsoft documents locale-specific, case-sensitive custom lexicons and recommends validation; Google and AWS document their own pronunciation dictionary and lexicon workflows.

Make a correct voice sound less robotic
If the pronunciation is right but the delivery feels stiff, change one delivery control at a time and compare short renders. Google documents settings for speaking rate, pitch, and volume (Google Cloud SSML documentation; audio profiles and settings). Amazon Polly documents SSML controls for speech rate, pitch, volume, and pronunciation (Polly SSML documentation).
- Try a more suitable voice: A different voice may better match the intended language, accent, or style.
- Adjust pacing: If the delivery feels rushed or unnaturally slow, make a modest rate change and listen again.
- Review pauses: Check punctuation and sentence breaks, and use supported pause controls where available.
- Change pitch cautiously: Compare a small adjustment with the original; a dramatic change may not sound more natural.
These are controls to test, not guaranteed fixes. Available settings vary, and the cited documentation does not establish one best value for every voice.

A repeatable test-and-correct workflow
- Save the original line. Keep a copy so you can compare the result after each change.
- Correct the spelling. Fix typos and clarify ambiguous text before changing voice settings.
- Check the voice and language. Confirm they fit the intended pronunciation and accent.
- Render a short sentence containing the word. Listen to both the target word and the phrase around it.
- Apply a supported pronunciation control if needed. Use the selected provider’s phoneme markup for a one-off correction or its lexicon for recurring terms.
- Adjust delivery separately. If the words are right but the rhythm is not, try modest changes to rate, pauses, or pitch, one at a time.
- Validate the final render. Check that the target word and surrounding phrase sound right, then regenerate the full passage.
Keep a project pronunciation list for names and recurring technical vocabulary. A saved list makes it easier to apply consistent corrections when the same terms appear again.
Quick Recap
What to check when a pronunciation fix does not work
- The phoneme markup is ignored or rejected: Confirm that the chosen model supports it, and check the provider’s required alphabet, syntax, and locale.
- A lexicon has no effect: Check that it is attached to the synthesis request and that its language matches the selected voice. For Microsoft Speech, also check case sensitivity and validate the lexicon.
- Only certain languages or voices behave differently: Support can depend on locale, language, model, and voice. Google notes that not every SSML element is available for every language; Microsoft also documents locale-dependent support.
- The sound is still robotic: Separate pronunciation from prosody. If the words are accurate, test the voice and delivery settings rather than repeatedly rewriting the spelling.
