First determine whether you have a real failure or only a compatibility warning. In RimWorld 1.7, Ludeon says the vast majority of mods work without author changes; a yellow “potentially unsupported” label can appear simply because the game version changed. Do not remove a working mod solely because of that label.
If the game actually crashes, hangs, loses mod content, or behaves incorrectly, protect your save, verify the game build and each mod’s support status and dependencies, then isolate the cause with controlled disable-and-reenable tests. Roll back only when the specific release and mod author support that choice.

What changed, and why an engine update can break a mod
A RimWorld mod is not just a collection of art files. It can contain XML definitions, patches, scripts, calls to game APIs, integrations with Steamworks, and assumptions about load order. An engine or game update may leave simple data-only content intact while changing the code or interfaces that complex mods use.
Version metadata can create a warning without a failure
Ludeon’s October 2026 announcement for Update 1.7 and the Waylith Engine says that most mods continue to work, but an author may need to mark a tested release as 1.7-compatible before the yellow warning disappears. The warning therefore tells you that the mod’s declared version range is incomplete; it does not prove that the mod is malfunctioning.

Engine and API changes affect only some mods
Mods that call internal game code, use a changed API, or depend on platform services are more exposed than mods that only add definitions or textures. Ludeon’s 2022 Steam Deck beta was an example: a new Steamworks API was expected to break mods that accessed Steamworks while most other mods continued to work. That kind of targeted break is why the exact symptom and the mod’s implementation matter.
Dependencies and ordering can turn an update into a conflict
A mod may be updated for the new game version but still require a framework, library, or specific load-after/load-before relationship. An update can also expose an interaction between two individually functional mods. Treat “updated” as one fact to verify, not as proof that every combination is compatible.
Before troubleshooting, preserve a recoverable save
Testing can change a save permanently when a mod has added items, maps, hediffs, quests, or other persistent data. Work from a copy and keep the original untouched until you know the result.
- Exit to the desktop and copy the affected save to a separate folder or backup location. Give the copy a clear test name.
- Record the current game version/build, the date of the update, and the complete active mod list and order. A screenshot is useful, but a text list is easier to search and share.
- Do not overwrite the only working save after launching it with content-heavy mods removed. If you must open it for diagnosis, use the duplicate.
- When changing a mod, disable it first where possible instead of deleting files. Reversible changes make it easier to restore the previous state.
Step 1: Describe the failure precisely
Write down the full version shown by the game and what changed immediately before the problem. Distinguish a major release such as 1.7 from a small patch or a mod update. Then classify the symptom:
- Launch failure: the game closes, crashes, or never reaches the main menu.
- Load hang: the progress bar or startup screen stops indefinitely.
- Error window: RimWorld reaches a menu or save but displays red errors or an exception.
- Missing content: a faction, item, recipe, world feature, or menu is absent.
- Incorrect behavior: the game loads, but a feature breaks, produces bad values, or fails only after a particular action.
- Save-specific failure: a copy of one colony fails while a new game works.
The distinction determines whether you should first inspect startup compatibility, a dependency, a save-specific object, or an in-game interaction.
Step 2: Separate a 1.7 warning from an actual break
Open the current official Update 1.7 information and the mod’s own page or release notes. If the only symptom is a yellow “potentially unsupported” label and the mod’s features work, leave the installation alone while the author tests and publishes a 1.7-compatible marking. Ludeon explicitly says that the label can remain until that metadata is changed.
If a feature fails, record the reproducible action instead of treating the label as the diagnosis. For example, “the mod is yellow” is not enough; “selecting a saved pawn causes a red error after loading a 1.7 colony” gives an author something to investigate.

Step 3: Verify the mod, dependencies, and load order
Check the author’s supported versions
Read the mod page’s latest update note and supported game-version list. Look for a release explicitly tested with your installed build, not merely a recent upload date. If the author says the mod is still being ported, do not assume a local workaround will make it safe for an important colony.
Confirm required frameworks and libraries
Review the mod’s dependency declarations and installation instructions. A missing framework can produce errors that look like an engine regression. Make sure the dependency itself has a release compatible with your game version and is enabled in the required position.
Apply ordering and incompatibility instructions
Use the current mod page and RimWorld’s warning information for load-after, load-before, and known-incompatible entries. Ludeon’s 1.1 guidance described metadata for supported versions, dependencies, ordering, and incompatibilities; the exact interface can change, so follow the labels shown in your current game and the author’s current instructions.
Step 4: Test with a controlled mod set
The fastest reliable diagnosis is a reversible process of elimination. Do not change ten unrelated settings at once, because you will not know which change mattered.

- Close RimWorld and make sure your backup copy exists.
- Launch with all nonessential mods disabled, leaving only the game’s built-in content and any dependency that is required for the test itself.
- Test the same action or load the duplicate save. If the problem remains with mods disabled, the cause may be the save, base game, installation, or a different factor; it is not established as a mod conflict.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable a small, coherent group of mods and repeat the exact test.
- When the error returns, split that group in half and test each half. Continue halving the failing set until one mod or a small interaction remains.
- Re-test the suspected mod by itself, then with each required dependency and finally with the other mod suspected of interacting with it. This distinguishes a standalone failure from a conflict.
A mod that works alone but fails when paired with another is not necessarily obsolete. Report the pair, their order, and the exact action that triggers the problem.
Step 5: Match common symptoms to likely fixes
The game will not reach the main menu
Start with a minimal mod set. If the game launches, restore mods by groups until the failing group is found. Within that group, check for a missing dependency, an old code library, or a mod that touches the changed engine interface. Keep the disabled set aside rather than deleting it so you can restore the previous configuration.
Loading stops at a particular point
Repeat the load with the suspected group disabled and compare the result. A fixed point in the loading process often identifies a mod that is parsing definitions or initializing code, but the position alone is not proof. Use the divide-and-test method and capture the log after the hang or failed attempt.

Red errors appear after a save loads
Note the first error and the action that follows it; later messages can be consequences. Test the duplicate save with the suspected mod disabled only if you accept that the test may report missing content. Do not save over the original. If a new test colony works while the duplicate colony fails, tell the author that the issue is save-specific.

Items, recipes, or factions are missing
Check whether the content-providing mod is enabled, whether its dependency is present, and whether another mod marks it incompatible. Verify that the save was created with the same content. Removing a content-heavy mod can make existing objects unavailable, so restore the backup before attempting a normal play session.
The game loads but one feature behaves incorrectly
Write a minimal reproduction: the map or menu used, the pawn or object involved, the exact clicks or actions, and whether the problem occurs in a new colony. Then test only the feature’s mod and its dependencies. This can reveal a conflict that a startup test will never show.
Step 6: Use the log and send a report that can be acted on
When an error window appears, use its “Share Log” control and include the resulting link. Ludeon’s forum guidance asks for the log together with a named mod list. A useful report contains:
- the full RimWorld version and build;
- the operating environment if it affects reproduction, such as the Steam Deck beta or another special branch;
- every active mod by name, in load order, including dependencies;
- the mod or combination you isolated, if any;
- what you expected, what happened, and the exact steps that reproduce it;
- whether the failure occurs in a new test colony, an existing save, or both;
- the log link and, if relevant, a save-copy description that does not expose private information.
Send a focused report to the mod author or the appropriate support forum. “The update broke my mods” omits the information needed to distinguish a version tag, dependency, ordering problem, and code defect.
When should you roll RimWorld back?
Rollback is a compatibility decision, not the default response to a yellow label. Use it when the required mod has no compatible release, the author or official guidance recommends the older game version, and you can work safely with a backed-up save.
Why release-specific advice matters
For the 2020 1.1 major update, Ludeon said simple data-only mods would probably continue to work while complex mods could break, and recommended the Steam 1.0 branch for players who depended on unupdated complex mods. That was guidance for that release and its mod state. It does not mean every 1.7 installation should be forced back to 1.6 or an earlier branch.

- Easy to learn, quick to play – ideal for any occasion
- Constant tension and surprising twists

- The "Biggys" and "Bandit" modules bring more variety to the game
For 1.7, Ludeon says 1.6 saves load on 1.7 and 1.7 saves also work when returning to 1.6, but that statement does not guarantee that every modded save or mod combination is safe in both directions. Treat a cross-version save as a copy to test, not as a substitute for a backup.
Steam branch procedure
- Exit the game and back up the save and current mod configuration.
- In Steam, open RimWorld’s library entry, choose Properties, then open Betas.
- Review the branches currently offered for your installation. Branch names and availability can change; select only the version your required mod supports.
- Allow Steam to finish changing the installation, then start RimWorld and verify the displayed build before loading the duplicate save.
- Test the save and mod in that branch. Keep the original branch’s backup so you can return without guessing which files changed.
If the needed branch is not listed, do not substitute an unofficial download or assume that any nearby version is equivalent. Ask the mod author which game build is supported and whether the save can be moved between branches.

How to decide between updating, disabling, isolating, and rolling back
| Evidence | Best first action | Why | Risk to a save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only a yellow 1.7 compatibility warning; features work | Keep the mod enabled and monitor the author’s compatibility marking | Ludeon says the warning can reflect an unchanged version tag | Low, provided you do not alter the save unnecessarily |
| Failure disappears when one mod is disabled | Leave that mod disabled, check its release notes, and report the reproduction | The controlled test links the symptom to that mod or its interaction | Potentially high if the mod adds persistent content; use a copy |
| Failure returns only when two updated mods are together | Test order, dependencies, and the pair in isolation | The evidence points to an interaction rather than a single outdated file | Moderate; avoid saving the test colony over the original |
| No compatible mod release and an author-supported older branch exists | Back up, switch through Steam’s available beta branch, and test the copy | Rollback matches the documented support state | Moderate to high across game versions; retain separate backups |
| Problem persists with all mods disabled | Investigate the base installation, branch, or save and provide the log | The mod-isolation test did not reproduce a mod cause | Usually lower for mod data, but still use a backup |
Protecting a modded colony during repeated tests
Keep a small change log with the date, game build, mod order, and result of each test. Save separate copies before enabling a new group. If you discover that a mod is required for existing objects, restore the prior configuration rather than repeatedly opening and saving the colony in a partially disabled state.
When a mod author publishes an update, do not assume that installing it repairs an already affected save. Re-run the same reproduction in a duplicate, confirm that the error is gone, and only then consider returning to normal play. If the update changes definitions or removes content, ask the author whether a migration step is required.
What the current 1.7 transition means for troubleshooting
As of Ludeon’s October 12–13, 2026 release information, Update 1.7 moves RimWorld from Unity to the studio’s Waylith Engine. The announcement describes 1.7 as available on Steam’s unstable branch for testing and says to restart Steam if the game does not update automatically. Branch status can change, so verify the current Steam listing before switching.
Ludeon’s broad compatibility statement is encouraging but deliberately qualitative: “vast majority” is not a percentage and does not promise that every mod or combination works. If a mod behaves differently from 1.6, the studio asks authors to test and contact the official development Discord. A player’s most useful contribution remains a reproducible report with the build, mod list, order, symptom, and log.
Quick Recap
A compact checklist
- Write down the exact build, update type, and symptom.
- Decide whether the yellow label is the only issue.
- Check the mod author’s supported version, dependencies, ordering, and incompatibilities.
- Back up the save and test only a duplicate.
- Disable all nonessential mods, then restore groups and halve the failing group.
- Test suspected standalone failures and mod interactions separately.
- Use “Share Log,” and send the full named mod list and reproduction steps.
- Rollback only to a currently available, author-supported branch after verifying save safety.
