1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix rhythm-game timing by first identifying what is late—audio, button registration, or the whole game’s frame timing—then change one variable at a time. Stabilize frame rate, test the game’s supported low-latency audio mode, remove unnecessary processing, investigate driver glitches, and only then use the game’s calibration control. Smaller buffers, exclusive audio, and high controller polling rates can help in the right setup, but each has trade-offs and none is a universal cure.
Start by identifying what is actually late
“Audio lag,” “input delay,” and “desync” describe different failures. Treating them as the same problem often makes troubleshooting slower because each travels through a different part of the PC.

- Sound arrives after the beat: the likely problem is audio-render latency, an output-device path, or a fixed timing offset.
- Your press registers late while sound and visuals stay aligned: investigate the controller, USB or wireless path, polling, and the game’s input handling.
- Music, animation, and hit windows drift or stutter together: check frame-rate stability and frame pacing before changing audio hardware.
- Pops, crackles, dropouts, silence, or robotic sound: suspect an overloaded buffer, driver interruption, or device conflict rather than a steady timing offset.
Play the same short section after every change. Keep a note of the setting, what changed, and whether the result was better, worse, or unchanged. This makes the result attributable and gives you a way back to the last stable configuration.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Observe the symptom and classify the late path.
- Verify stable frame rate and frame pacing during the affected section.
- Test only audio modes and buffer controls the game and driver actually support.
- Use one simple output path while diagnosing.
- Investigate intermittent glitches with a latency-monitoring test and driver isolation.
- Check controller connection and polling only if input registration is the problem.
- Run the game’s own calibration tool after the underlying paths are stable.
Do not change graphics settings, Windows audio mode, controller connection, and calibration offset at the same time. A rhythm game can feel improved simply because a different combination changed the perceived beat, while the original fault remains.

1. Check frame-rate stability before touching audio
In games that connect actions closely to music and animation, an unstable frame rate can look exactly like timing lag. A frame-rate dip may delay a rhythm action, make visuals fall behind audio, or cause the music and scene to lose synchronization.
What to look for
- Dips or spikes during the exact song section where timing feels wrong.
- Uneven frame delivery even when the average frame-rate number looks high.
- Symptoms that appear during effects-heavy scenes and disappear in simpler areas.
- Music, animation, and input feeling wrong together rather than only one path being late.
Lower the game’s graphics settings temporarily and replay the same passage. If the timing becomes consistent, the original problem was likely frame-time pressure rather than an audio offset. You can then raise settings one at a time until you find the highest stable configuration.
Hi-Fi RUSH is a game-specific example
KRAFTON’s Hi-Fi RUSH support guidance, updated November 20, 2025, says that maintaining a stable frame rate is essential for synchronization. It warns that an unstable or temporarily reduced frame rate can desynchronize music and visuals or create input latency during rhythm actions. For that game, the recommended test is a fixed 60 FPS target and lower graphics settings if timing feels inconsistent.

That is advice for Hi-Fi RUSH, not a universal requirement for every PC rhythm game. Other games may use a different timing model, support another frame-rate target, or include their own frame-pacing guidance.
2. Test the game’s supported audio path
Windows audio latency is the interval between an application submitting audio and you hearing it. The result depends on the application, audio API, driver-supported buffer sizes, effects, and hardware. The game must support the path you choose, and the driver must expose the buffer sizes the application requests.
Shared and exclusive audio
WASAPI can provide low-latency operation when the application and driver support it. Shared mode allows Windows and multiple applications to use the endpoint; on Windows 10 and later, shared mode can still support short audio periods. Exclusive mode gives the application sole use of that endpoint and bypasses the Windows audio engine in the documented path, but system sounds and other applications may be blocked while the game holds the device.

Exclusive mode is therefore a test, not an automatic best setting. Use it only if the game exposes it and you are comfortable losing audio from other applications. If switching to exclusive mode causes silence, device lockouts, or worse consistency, return to the supported shared mode.

Do not copy settings from another game
Use the game’s own instructions and controls rather than registry changes or generic “latency tweaks.” An audio mode that works in one title may be unsupported or unstable in another. Keep a record of the original setting so you can restore it if the experiment fails.
3. Adjust buffer size carefully
A smaller buffer means audio waits for fewer samples before being delivered, which can reduce delay. It also gives the CPU less time to prepare each block, increasing the chance of dropouts, distortion, or silence. The practical target is the smallest buffer that remains clean and stable in the affected game.
| Choice | Potential benefit | Typical cost or failure mode | When to test it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller buffer | Lower render latency when the driver and game support it | Higher CPU demand, crackles, dropouts, or silence if set too low | When sound is consistently late and the current path is stable |
| Larger buffer | More processing headroom and fewer underruns | Greater audio delay | When low settings produce glitches or the PC is heavily loaded |
| Shared mode | Other applications can continue using the endpoint | May add processing or a longer period than a supported exclusive path | When you need system audio, chat, or recording alongside the game |
| Exclusive mode | Can reduce processing in the documented path | Blocks other applications from the endpoint while active | When the game supports it and exclusive use is acceptable |
Numbers that need context
Microsoft describes approximately 1.3 ms of Windows 10-and-later audio-engine render latency for all applications in the path it discusses. It also reports a 4.5–16 ms round-trip reduction compared with Windows 8.1—16 ms for floating-point applications and 4.5 ms for integer applications—in that platform comparison. These are documented Windows-stack figures, not a promise for a particular PC, driver, game, or output device.
Microsoft gives 128 frames at 48 kHz as an example of a driver-declared buffer, which is about 3 ms of audio. That is an illustrative calculation, not a universal recommendation. The actual end-to-end delay includes other stages before you hear the sound.

Rocksmith+ settings: useful illustration, not a universal preset
Ubisoft’s Rocksmith+ PC guide recommends a 48,000 Hz sample rate for its ASIO setup and describes a default ASIO buffer of 128. The guide calls that buffer a compromise between latency and resource use: lowering it can reduce latency but consumes more CPU, and setting it too low can cause dropouts or silence.

For its WASAPI path, the guide describes Audio Exclusivity and an audio-engine buffer control. Too few buffers can garble or distort audio. These values belong to Rocksmith+ and its supported devices; they are not required settings for unrelated rhythm games. If your title has no ASIO or buffer control, do not install or force one merely to match this example.
4. Simplify the output path while testing
For diagnosis, use one direct output device and leave software effects, virtual mixers, surround layers, and device switching out of the chain where possible. Windows processing and hardware can add latency, while aggressive low-buffer settings can introduce glitches. A simpler path makes it easier to tell whether the game’s timing improved.
This does not establish that one headphone type, DAC, sound card, or cable universally fixes rhythm-game timing. Hardware purchases should follow a demonstrated limitation in your setup, not a general promise that a particular accessory eliminates lag.
Controlled output test
- Close applications that may capture or retune the audio endpoint.
- Select one output device in Windows and in the game.
- Disable optional enhancements temporarily, noting their original state.
- Replay the same section at the same frame-rate target.
- Restore each enhancement individually if the test made no difference and you need it for normal use.
5. Separate steady delay from intermittent glitches
A fixed offset is predictable: every hit feels early or late by roughly the same amount. Crackle, dropout, robotic sound, or an occasional burst of delay points instead to buffer underruns, driver interruptions, or a device conflict.
Use LatencyMon for a reproducible glitch
Focusrite recommends running LatencyMon while playing audio and reproducing the glitch for at least 15 minutes. The duration matters because a short test can miss an intermittent driver spike. Note the exact time of the glitch and which devices were connected.
Isolation steps
- Check Windows, the game platform, and relevant device drivers for updates.
- Temporarily disable unused audio devices rather than changing every driver at once.
- Disconnect nonessential peripherals that may compete for USB or driver resources.
- If removing a device changes the symptom, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the conflict.
- Do not disable drivers wholesale; isolate only the device or software implicated by the test.
If the audio is clean but every hit is consistently late, LatencyMon is unlikely to supply the fix; return to the game’s audio path and calibration controls.

6. Check controller input only when the input path is late
Controller latency includes more than polling. A button press passes through the controller’s electronics and firmware, the polling cycle, the USB or wireless transfer, the host system, and the game’s input registration. A high advertised polling rate therefore does not prove low end-to-end latency.

- Connect the controller directly by USB, avoiding a hub for the test.
- Try a different motherboard or laptop USB port if the first port behaves inconsistently.
- Replay the same section and compare consistency, not just one lucky hit.
- If wired behavior is stable but wireless behavior is not, inspect wireless interference, battery state, firmware, and receiver placement.
GameSir’s G7 SE explanation gives theoretical polling-cycle intervals of 8 ms at 125 Hz and 1 ms at 1000 Hz. Those are only the time between polling opportunities for that stage. Controller processing, firmware, USB path, host load, other devices, and the measurement method can produce a different total result. Polling changes cannot correct audio-render latency or a frame-rate desynchronization.
What to compare when choosing an input method
| Factor | Questions to answer on your PC |
|---|---|
| Connection | Is direct wired input more consistent than the wireless connection in the same section? |
| Polling behavior | What polling rate is actually sustained, and does changing it improve observed consistency? |
| Compatibility | Does the game recognize the controller correctly without a remapping layer adding another process? |
| System conditions | Do hubs, other USB devices, firmware, or high CPU load coincide with late registration? |
7. Calibrate only after the paths are stable
Once frame pacing is steady, audio is clean, and input is registering consistently, use the game’s built-in audio or timing calibration. Calibration is for a stable, fixed mismatch; it cannot repair a frame-rate spike, an underrun, or an input path that varies from hit to hit.
There is no universal offset value, sign convention, or calibration procedure that applies to every rhythm game. Follow the named game’s instructions and test the result in the same section you used for diagnosis. If the calibration screen asks you to tap along with a metronome, use the exact headphones or speakers and connection you will use during play.
How the latency paths fit together
| Path | What can be late | Useful evidence | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio render | Time from application submission through the audio stack and device until sound is heard | Consistent late sound; buffer or audio-mode changes affect timing | Test supported WASAPI/ASIO, buffer, and exclusivity options |
| Frame timing | Visuals and game actions arrive unevenly or drift from music | Frame dips, stutter, or simultaneous music/visual desync | Lower graphics settings and stabilize the game-specific frame target |
| Controller delivery | Press processing, polling, transfer, host handling, and game registration | Audio and visuals align while presses register late or inconsistently | Test direct wired USB, another port, firmware, and sustained behavior |
| Driver interruption | Short spikes that create glitches rather than a constant offset | Crackles, dropouts, robotic audio, or rare bursts of delay | Run a 15-minute reproduction test and isolate devices |
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
- Forcing a universal 60 FPS cap: use a fixed 60 FPS test only where the game’s developer recommends it, such as Hi-Fi RUSH. Otherwise follow that title’s timing model.
- Setting the smallest possible buffer immediately: reduce it one step at a time and stop when glitches appear.
- Assuming exclusive mode is always fastest: compare it with supported shared mode and keep the mode that is both consistent and usable.
- Buying a high-polling controller to fix audio delay: polling affects one input stage and cannot shorten the audio-render path.
- Changing calibration while the frame rate is unstable: stabilize frame pacing first or you will calibrate against a moving target.
- Disabling every audio driver: isolate unused devices methodically and reconnect them one at a time.
- Judging success from one song or one hit: replay the same passage under identical conditions after each change.
A practical decision checklist
- Sound only is late: test the supported audio API, buffer, output path, and then calibration.
- Presses only are late: test direct USB, another port, controller firmware, and sustained input consistency.
- Everything drifts when the scene gets busy: monitor frame pacing and reduce graphics load.
- Audio crackles or drops out: raise the buffer, check CPU headroom, and investigate driver interruptions.
- Exclusive mode blocks chat or system audio: use shared mode unless the game requires exclusivity.
- No setting changes the symptom: restore the last known-good configuration and use the game’s support documentation for its specific timing system.
The reliable endpoint is not the lowest number shown in a settings menu. It is a configuration in which the same section produces clean audio, stable frames, and repeatable input, with the game’s calibration applied only to the remaining fixed offset.
