If Red Dead Redemption 2 leaves Arthur standing at a door, first check that it is the correct entrance and that the mission has reached the required interaction. Nearby doors, missed objectives, control mismatches, and online-session freezes can look like the same bug but need different fixes. Work through the checks below in order; the community workarounds are anecdotal, not guaranteed repairs.
Check the mission objective and the exact door
Read the current objective and listen to the dialogue before trying to force the door. Some missions place an unusable door close to the intended entrance. In the Chapter 2 mission “Polite Society, Valentine Style,” players discussing a hotel-door problem point out that two nearby doors can be confused; one reply also asks whether the player spoke to the desk clerk first. Try the interaction the situation calls for
Opening a door and kicking one are different actions. Wait for an on-screen prompt and use the interaction mapped for your platform; if the mission calls for a kick, use the relevant melee input instead. Bindings can vary, especially on PC, so check the controls shown in your settings rather than assuming a particular key.

- If the prompt never appears, approach at a walk and make sure Arthur is not holding an item that prevents the interaction.
- If the objective specifically calls for kicking, try the melee action after approaching the door. In a PC discussion, players suggested approaching without running and keeping hands empty; one contributor said running into the door while pressing the melee key worked for them. For the opening cover tutorial, take cover where instructed
If Dutch tells you to take cover during the opening snow sequence, the instruction is not necessarily asking you to enter through a house door. A GameFAQs answer for this specific tutorial says to take cover at the cattle shed; it identifies R1 for PlayStation. Follow the on-screen instruction for your platform and scenario. GameFAQs answer.

If a story-mission scene will not advance
After confirming the right door and required action, try recovering the mission state before repeating the same input indefinitely.
- Reload the latest save, then return to the objective and try the intended interaction again.
- If reloading does not help, restart the game and retry the mission.
- In the reported Valentine hotel-door case, players said they let the mission fail and chose “skip checkpoint” to get past the blocked interaction. This skips that checkpoint sequence and is an anecdotal workaround, not official guidance. Steam Community discussion.
If your character freezes entering an Online building
A Red Dead Online character freezing at a Moonshine Shack entrance is a different problem from a story mission door that does not respond. In one August 2025 discussion, a player suggested changing lobby or returning to Online > Free Roam. Try changing session before considering more disruptive options that could kill your character or risk progress; this workaround is player-reported and not officially confirmed.
