How to Fix “Recycle Bin Is Corrupted” in Windows 10 and 11

The “Recycle Bin on Drive is corrupted” message means Windows has detected damage in that drive’s hidden $Recycle.bin folder. Microsoft’s documented repair is to remove that folder from an elevated Command Prompt, then restart Windows. The reset recreates a usable Recycle Bin, but it also removes anything still stored in the damaged bin.

Before running the command, decide whether files in the affected Recycle Bin must be recovered. If they do, do not reset the folder until you have taken the recovery steps available to you. Once you are ready, use the exact drive letter named in the warning; the problem can be on a secondary or mounted volume, not only on the system drive.

What the corruption message means

Windows can show this warning when you sign in or when you try to delete a file. Microsoft identifies the cause as a corrupted $Recycle.bin directory. Recycle Bin data is maintained per volume, so the drive letter in the message is significant. An alert for E:, for example, points to that volume’s Recycle Bin rather than automatically indicating a problem with C:.

The affected location may be a logical volume or a mounted volume. That is why troubleshooting must start with the letter displayed in the warning instead of assuming that Windows’ boot drive is involved. Microsoft’s example wording is: “The Recycle Bin on <Drive> is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?”

Before resetting the Recycle Bin

Protect anything you still need

The official repair deletes the existing Recycle Bin directory. Items that remain in that bin should therefore be treated as permanently lost from the Recycle Bin after the command runs. If the bin contains a file you may need, stop at this point and pursue recovery before resetting it. The reset is a structural repair, not an export or backup operation.

Confirm the target volume

Read the drive letter in the warning carefully. Use that letter in the command and do not substitute C: merely because it is the Windows system drive. A message naming E: requires an E: command. If more than one volume produces the warning, handle each named volume separately; the documented command targets one drive at a time.

Use an administrator session

The reset requires an elevated Command Prompt. A normal, non-administrator prompt may not have the permissions needed to remove the protected directory. Open Start, type Command Prompt or cmd, choose the option to run it as administrator, and approve the elevation request before entering the command.

Microsoft’s repair procedure

  1. Identify the drive. Copy the letter shown in the corruption warning, including the colon. Examples in the message might be C: or E:.
  2. Open an elevated Command Prompt. The window must be running with administrator privileges.
  3. Run the reset command. Replace <Drive> with the affected drive letter:
    RD <Drive>$Recycle.bin /s /q
  4. Use the matching concrete form. For the system drive, enter:
    RD C:$Recycle.bin /s /q
For a secondary drive named in the warning, enter, for example:
    RD E:$Recycle.bin /s /q
  5. Restart Windows. Microsoft instructs you to restart after running the command. Do not treat the command as complete until Windows has been restarted.

Type the command exactly as shown, with the backslash before $Recycle.bin. The /s switch removes the directory and its contents recursively. The /q switch performs the removal quietly, avoiding an interactive confirmation. Together, they remove the existing per-drive Recycle Bin directory so Windows can initialize a fresh one after the restart.

Understanding the command and its consequences

Why the command names a drive

$Recycle.bin is associated with a particular volume. A command aimed at C: addresses C:$Recycle.bin; it does not repair an E: Recycle Bin. This per-drive design explains why the same computer can report corruption on one volume while other volumes continue to work normally.

What “recursively and quietly” means

Recursive removal includes the contents beneath the Recycle Bin directory, not just the top-level folder. Quiet mode suppresses the usual confirmation interaction. A quiet completion is not a report about the files that were inside; it simply reflects the command’s requested behavior. Because the operation removes the existing bin, any items that had not been restored beforehand are no longer available through that Recycle Bin.

What the restart accomplishes

Restarting is part of Microsoft’s procedure. It gives Windows a clean session in which to recognize the repaired per-drive Recycle Bin. If you skip the restart, you have not followed the complete documented sequence, even if the command accepted your input.

Choosing the safest response

There are two practical choices: preserve data first or reset immediately. The right choice depends on whether the damaged bin contains anything worth recovering.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
Decision point Preserve first Reset now
Data preservation Use this when files still in the affected bin may be needed; the reset is postponed. Use this when losing the existing bin contents is acceptable.
Scope Work only on the volume named by the warning. Run the command only for the named volume; repeat separately only when another volume reports its own error.
Privilege No reset command is run until recovery decisions are complete. An elevated Command Prompt is required.
Next action after reset Once recovery is finished, follow the command and restart sequence. Restart Windows immediately after the command.

This approach avoids the most damaging mistake: applying a broad system-drive fix when the warning identifies another volume, or deleting the damaged bin before deciding whether its contents matter.

If the warning names a secondary or mounted volume

An E:, F:, or other letter is not an error in the procedure. It tells you which volume owns the corrupted Recycle Bin. Replace the placeholder with that exact letter, preserving the colon and backslash. For example, an E: warning maps to RD E:$Recycle.bin /s /q.

Microsoft notes that the affected location can be a mounted volume as well as a logical volume. Consequently, do not limit your investigation to the disk where Windows is installed. The warning’s drive letter is the scope indicator supplied by Windows, and the command should be directed there.

When the reset does not resolve the symptom

If the message or the inability to delete files from the Recycle Bin remains after the documented reset and restart, use Microsoft Support’s automatic diagnostic for Windows file and folder problems. Microsoft lists inability to delete files or folders from the Recycle Bin among the situations covered by that diagnostic.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Run the diagnostic as a separate troubleshooting stage rather than changing the command to target unrelated drives. Keep the original drive letter in mind when answering the diagnostic’s prompts, because the corruption report is volume-specific. If another drive later produces the same warning, treat that as a separate volume problem and make a separate data-preservation decision before resetting it.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Running the command in a non-elevated window

The command is documented for an elevated Command Prompt. If you opened a standard prompt, close it and reopen Command Prompt with administrator privileges before trying again. Elevation is a requirement of the repair, not an optional convenience.

Using the wrong drive letter

Do not copy a C: example when the warning says E:. The examples illustrate syntax only. The letter in the actual Windows message determines the directory that is removed.

Forgetting the colon or backslash

The target must follow the documented pattern, such as C:$Recycle.bin. A missing colon, an omitted backslash, or a mistyped directory name changes the command and can prevent it from addressing the intended Recycle Bin.

Expecting the old bin contents to survive

RD ... /s /q is not a repair that preserves deleted items. It removes the existing directory recursively and quietly. Restore or otherwise recover anything important before running it.

Stopping before the restart

Microsoft’s sequence ends with a Windows restart. Complete that step before judging whether the Recycle Bin has been rebuilt correctly.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 support context

The Microsoft Learn guidance applies to supported Windows client versions, and the maintained MicrosoftDocs copy is dated February 12, 2026. The repair command itself is the same documented reset for the drive identified in the message.

Version status matters when you need help beyond this repair. Microsoft Support says that free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, verify the lifecycle status of the Windows 10 installation before relying on ongoing assistance or security servicing. Windows 11 users should likewise confirm that their specific release remains supported when seeking version-specific help.
