Start by making two short recordings: one in the Pixel Recorder app and one in Camera. Recorder checks the phone’s bottom microphone, while Camera checks the top microphone. If both recordings are quiet, work through mute, Bluetooth routing, obstructions, cleaning, privacy controls, permissions, restart and updates before seeking repair. If both official tests are clear but one app is quiet, the problem is confined to that app.
First, identify which microphone path is quiet
A Pixel can use different microphones for different recording functions. Testing only the app where you noticed the problem can therefore send you in the wrong direction. A short, controlled test in each of Google’s built-in apps separates a phone-wide microphone problem from an app, permission or routing problem.

Test the bottom microphone with Recorder
- Put the phone on a table and remove any headset or accessory connected to it.
- Turn Bluetooth off temporarily from Quick Settings so a car system, earbuds or another device cannot receive the audio input.
- Open the Pixel Recorder app and make a 10- to 15-second recording while speaking at a normal volume. Keep your hand away from the lower edge of the phone.
- Play the recording through the phone speaker. Google’s Pixel Help guidance says, “If you hear your recording, your bottom microphone works.”
Use a normal speaking voice rather than shouting into the opening. The goal is not to measure loudness; it is to establish whether the recording contains a clear voice at all.

- Open Camera and switch to video.
- Record yourself speaking for 10 to 15 seconds. Do not cover the top edge or hold the phone inside a case while testing.
- Play the video on the Pixel itself and listen to the speech.
Google states, “If you hear sound in the video, your top microphone works.” The two results give you a useful starting map:

Save the two short files until troubleshooting is complete. They provide a repeatable before-and-after comparison without relying on a changing call connection or a different person’s phone.
Follow this fix sequence
Work through the checks in order. After each change, repeat the same Recorder and Camera tests under similar conditions. Changing several things at once makes it difficult to tell which action solved the problem.
1. Check mute status and audio routing
During a call, confirm that the on-screen microphone button is not muted. A mute control affects what the other person hears, so it can look like a failed microphone even when the hardware is fine.

Next, switch Bluetooth off and test again. A Pixel may route call or recording input through connected earbuds, a vehicle system or another Bluetooth device. The remote microphone can be farther from your mouth, blocked by clothing or simply lower in volume than the phone microphone. Disconnect wired accessories as well, then repeat the built-in tests with only the phone.
- End an active call before running the tests; some call interfaces keep their own mute and route controls.
- In Quick Settings, tap Bluetooth to turn it off rather than merely disconnecting one remembered device.
- If the recording becomes clear with Bluetooth disabled, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the route that changes the input.
Do not treat a successful Bluetooth test as proof that the Pixel microphone is defective. It indicates that the original audio path was not the phone’s microphone.
2. Remove the case and screen protector temporarily
Take off the phone case and any screen protector, then make fresh Recorder and Camera samples. Even a case made for another Pixel generation can misalign with a microphone opening. A protector or adhesive edge can also overlap an opening near the top of the display.

Google recommends using a phone case made for Pixel and checking accessories when others cannot hear you. Inspect the openings while the case is removed, and compare the result with the case installed. If the sound changes only when the accessory is fitted, replace it with a properly aligned Pixel-compatible case or protector.

Do not enlarge an opening or cut the accessory while it is on the phone. A rough edge can shed material into the opening, and a misaligned cutout can remain a problem even after modification.
3. Inspect and clean gently
Look at the microphone openings and the USB-C area under a bright light. Pocket lint, dust or residue can reduce the amount of sound reaching a microphone. The openings may be small and easy to mistake for speaker or sensor holes, so inspect rather than probing at random.
Google’s exact cleaning guidance is: “If they’re dirty, gently clean with a soft, lint-free cloth.” Use a dry cloth and light contact around the exterior. Keep the cloth from snagging on the opening.
- Do not pour or spray liquid into a microphone opening.
- Do not insert a pin, needle, toothpick or other pointed tool.
- Do not use abrasive material or force debris deeper into the phone.
- Do not scrape across the USB-C port with metal.
After cleaning, repeat both official tests. If the sound improves immediately, the obstruction was likely affecting the acoustic path. If it does not, continue with software checks instead of repeating increasingly aggressive cleaning.

Android includes a system-wide microphone control in privacy controls. If that control is off, apps can be denied microphone input even when their individual permissions appear correct.

- Open Settings.
- Open Security & privacy or the privacy section shown on your Pixel’s Android version.
- Open the microphone privacy control and make sure system microphone access is enabled.
- Return to Recorder and make a new sample.
Android displays a microphone-use indicator when an app is accessing the microphone. Watch for that indicator while starting a recording. If it never appears, a system toggle, permission or app state may be preventing access. The indicator confirms that an app requested the microphone; it does not by itself confirm that the recorded level is strong.
Check the Quick Settings panel as well. Some Pixel versions expose a microphone tile that can disable access globally. If the tile shows microphone access is blocked, tap it to allow access and run the tests again.
5. Allow microphone permission for the affected app
An app can be installed and otherwise functional while lacking permission to record audio. Google defines the Microphone permission as “Record audio.” Set it for the app that produces quiet or silent recordings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then See all apps if necessary.
- Select the recording app, such as Recorder, Camera or the messaging app where the problem occurs.
- Tap Permissions.
- Tap Microphone and choose Allow. If Android offers a choice such as allowing only while the app is in use, select the option that permits the recording you need.
- Close the app completely, reopen it and create a new recording.
Permission changes affect future recordings; they cannot restore microphone data that was never captured in an earlier file. If a permission was already allowed, leave it enabled and continue to the next check rather than repeatedly toggling it.
6. Restart the Pixel and install updates
Close the affected apps, restart the phone and test again before making more changes. A restart ends stuck audio sessions and reloads the microphone service.
Then update the affected app through Google Play and install any available Android system update from Settings > System > Software update. Menu wording can vary by Android release, but the objective is the same: bring both the app and Pixel software to their current offered versions.

- Save or send any recordings you need to keep.
- Close recent apps, then restart the Pixel.
- Open the app store, find the affected app and install its update if one is offered.
- Open Settings > System > Software update and install a pending Android update, following the on-screen battery and Wi-Fi requirements.
- Repeat the Recorder and Camera tests after the phone finishes updating.
An update can correct an app-specific audio regression, but it cannot unblock a dirty opening or repair damaged hardware. Use the test results, not the update alone, to decide what to do next.
7. Isolate a third-party app
If both Recorder and Camera produce clear audio but a messaging or social app is quiet, the Pixel microphone paths are working in the controlled tests. Focus on that app.
- Recheck the app’s Microphone permission using the path above.
- Install any update offered for the app.
- Force-close and reopen it after changing permission or updating.
- If the app remains quiet, uninstall and reinstall it, then grant microphone access when prompted.
- Make a test recording before restoring optional audio or accessory settings.
Do not use a third-party app’s failure to diagnose the phone when the built-in tests are clear. A messaging app may apply its own noise suppression, input selector or voice-message processing. The decisive question is whether the same quiet result occurs in Google’s Recorder and Camera tests.
Use the test pattern to choose the next action
The combinations below turn the two recordings into a practical decision tree.

“Muffled” and “quiet” are useful descriptions but not separate repair categories. A partially covered opening can make speech sound both lower and less clear; use the test pattern to locate the affected path before deciding whether the issue is software or physical.
Common Pixel microphone symptoms and what they indicate
“Why is my Pixel microphone so quiet?”
Start with Recorder and Camera rather than changing a call setting. If one is clear and the other is not, concentrate on the corresponding microphone opening and its accessories. If both are quiet, check the system microphone control, app permissions, Bluetooth routing and physical obstructions in that order. A persistent failure in both tests should be treated as a possible hardware problem after those checks.

“Why are my Pixel videos muffled?”
Camera’s video test exercises the top microphone. Remove the case and screen protector, inspect the top opening, clean only with a soft lint-free cloth and verify Camera’s microphone permission. If Recorder is clear but every Camera video remains muffled, the issue is localized to the Camera path or Camera software rather than evidence that every Pixel microphone has failed.
“Why is my voice quiet in Recorder?”
Recorder checks the bottom microphone. Test with Bluetooth off and no case, then verify the system microphone toggle and Recorder’s permission. A clear Camera test alongside a quiet Recorder test points you toward the lower opening, Recorder access or the Recorder app itself.
“Why is my voice quiet in a messaging app?”
Compare a voice message with fresh Recorder and Camera files. If both built-in files are clear, inspect the messaging app’s permission, update it and reinstall if necessary. If the built-in files are also quiet, troubleshoot the Pixel itself before treating the messaging app as the cause.

When repeated app changes will not help
Escalate to Google Pixel support or an authorized repair option when both official tests remain quiet after you have disabled Bluetooth, removed accessories, cleaned gently, enabled system microphone access, allowed the relevant permissions, restarted and updated the phone.
Escalation is also appropriate when the problem persists across multiple apps after those checks. At that point, changing permissions repeatedly or reinstalling every app is unlikely to restore a microphone path that fails in the controlled Recorder and Camera tests.
When contacting support, describe the results separately: whether Recorder is clear, whether Camera is clear, whether the case was removed, whether Bluetooth was off and whether the system microphone control and app permission were enabled. Keep the short test files available if support asks for examples. This gives the technician a reproducible symptom instead of a single recording made under unknown routing conditions.
A safe final checklist
- Recorder test completed with the bottom microphone unobstructed.
- Camera video test completed with the top microphone unobstructed.
- Bluetooth and wired audio accessories disabled during testing.
- Case and screen protector removed for comparison.
- Microphone openings and USB-C area inspected.
- Only a soft, lint-free cloth used for gentle exterior cleaning.
- System microphone access enabled in privacy controls and Quick Settings.
- Microphone permission set to Allow for the affected app.
- Pixel restarted, affected app updated and Android update installed if offered.
- Third-party app reinstalled only after the built-in tests were compared.
The two controlled recordings are the key diagnosis. Clear Recorder and Camera samples point toward routing or an individual app; a quiet result in one points toward that microphone path; quiet results in both justify support or repair after the basic checks are complete.
