Quick Share discovery usually fails because the device that should receive is hidden, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is off, the devices are too far apart, or the local network blocks device-to-device traffic. Start by identifying the direction of the transfer, make the receiving device visible, unlock the Android screen when it is receiving, and test with both devices within 30 centimetres. Then work through the network, app, notification and compatibility checks below.
First determine which device is supposed to receive
Quick Share visibility is directional. A phone that cannot see your PC needs the PC’s receiving visibility checked; a PC that cannot see the phone needs the phone’s receiving mode or “Who can share with you” setting checked. Do not change settings on only the device that is sending.

| What you observe | Device to inspect first | Likely setting |
|---|---|---|
| Android cannot find the Windows PC | Windows PC | Quick Share for Windows > Device visibility |
| Windows cannot find the Android phone | Android phone | Receive mode or “Who can share with you” |
| Both devices appear, but the transfer notification is missing | Receiving device | Notifications, Focus Assist or Do not disturb |
Keep the transfer direction in mind through every step. If you switch which device receives, repeat the visibility check for that device. Discovery can therefore appear to work in one direction while failing in the other without contradicting itself.

Use Google’s detailed requirements and troubleshooting guidance in Share files between Android and Windows with Quick Share. If your PC is a Samsung model, Google directs owners to use Samsung’s Quick Share application from the Microsoft Store rather than the Google Windows application.
Check these requirements before spending time on privacy or network experiments. An unsupported Windows architecture, an old Android release, or the wrong manufacturer’s application cannot be corrected by moving the devices closer.
Make the receiving device discoverable
Windows is receiving from the phone
- Open Quick Share on the Windows PC. The application must be installed and open while you test discovery.
- Open the app’s settings and locate Device visibility.
- Temporarily choose Everyone for diagnosis. The other choices are Contacts, Your devices and No one.
- Return to the phone’s share sheet and search for the PC again.
No one deliberately hides the PC, while Contacts and Your devices can exclude a phone that is not recognized as an eligible contact or signed-in device. Once the test succeeds, restore the least permissive option that still suits your use.
Android is receiving from the PC
- On the phone, open Quick Share from the share sheet or the Quick Settings panel.
- Open Receive mode and leave that screen open while the PC searches. Receive mode makes the phone visible while the screen is displayed.
- If you prefer not to leave Receive mode open, open the visibility controls labelled Who can share with you.
- For a short diagnostic test, select Everyone for 10 minutes. Android automatically switches back to the previous visibility selection when the 10 minutes end.
Android also provides Your devices and Contacts. Those choices are useful for normal privacy, but they can hide a Windows PC during troubleshooting. Google’s Android guidance explains Receive mode and Bluetooth requirements in Use Quick Share.
Test privacy settings without leaving them open
Everyone and Receive mode are diagnostic settings, not a requirement to use Quick Share permanently. As soon as the devices can see one another, switch back to your preferred visibility. On Android, the 10-minute option reverts automatically; Windows visibility remains at the option you selected until you change it.
If changing visibility makes the device appear immediately, you have isolated the cause: the original setting was excluding the sender. There is no need to leave the device broadly visible or to change accounts for routine transfers.
Turn on Bluetooth and prepare Android correctly
Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices even when the actual file transfer also uses Wi-Fi. Turn it on in Windows Quick Settings or Windows Settings and in the phone’s Quick Settings panel. If Android is the receiver, unlock the screen before searching; a locked phone may not appear.

- Confirm Bluetooth shows as on, not merely that the device was paired in the past.
- Keep Quick Share open on Windows during the test.
- Keep the Android phone awake and unlocked when it is receiving.
- Do not begin a second transfer while another Quick Share transfer is still running.
Pairing history alone is not a substitute for an active Bluetooth radio. After toggling Bluetooth, wait briefly and search again. If the phone is receiving, leave the Receive mode screen visible so the receiver remains discoverable during the test.
Fix Wi-Fi, network isolation and distance
Use the same Wi-Fi network
Google says both devices should have Wi-Fi enabled and be connected to the same network. A phone on one Wi-Fi network and a PC on another can prevent discovery even if Bluetooth is on. Reconnect both devices to the same home or personal network, then search again.
Rule out a network that blocks device-to-device traffic
Some office, hotel, school and guest networks isolate clients from one another. Google suggests testing with the phone’s hotspot:
- Disable Wi-Fi on the Android phone.
- Turn on the phone’s mobile hotspot.
- Connect the Windows PC to that hotspot.
- Leave Bluetooth enabled on both devices and try Quick Share again.
If discovery works through the hotspot but not on the original network, the original network is the leading cause. Its access point may block local device-to-device traffic; changing Quick Share visibility will not remove that network restriction. Return the phone to its normal Wi-Fi connection after the test if you do not intend to use mobile data.

Move the devices much closer
Google gives 5 metres (16 feet) as the general distance requirement. For diagnosis, place the phone and PC within 30 centimetres (1 foot), with no drawer, bag or other obstruction between them. Search again after each change. A successful close-range test points to distance or radio conditions rather than an account or file-type problem.
The 30-centimetre test is deliberately stricter than the normal 5-metre guidance. It helps separate a marginal radio or placement problem from a visibility problem. Once discovery works at close range, gradually move the devices apart while remaining within 5 metres.
Refresh Quick Share and the wireless radios
Use this reset sequence after checking visibility, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It clears temporary discovery state without changing your files.

- On the phone, turn Airplane mode on, wait a few seconds, and turn it off again. Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are back on.
- Restart both the Windows PC and Android phone.
- Make sure no one else is currently sending a file to the receiving device. Wait for that transfer to finish before trying again.
- Unlock the phone and, if it is the receiver, open Receive mode once more.
- Place the devices within 30 centimetres and search again.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Retest after each reset rather than changing several unrelated settings at once. That makes the result useful: if reopening the app fixes discovery, the prior failure was temporary app state; if only the hotspot test works, focus on the network instead.
Confirm that your software and region are eligible
Windows and Android versions
Check that the PC runs a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or later and that the phone runs Android 6.0 or later. ARM-based Windows PCs require Windows 11 or later. These are the versions Google lists for Android-to-Windows Quick Share.
Install the correct Windows application
The Google Quick Share for Windows application must be installed and open. Samsung PC owners should use Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store, as directed in Google’s Windows guidance. A missing, closed or incompatible application cannot advertise the PC as a receiver.
Check country availability
Google lists the Windows application as available in the United States and most countries, but unavailable in Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Syria. If the app is not offered for your country, discovery troubleshooting cannot make that distribution available; use the supported application for your PC and region.
Recommended Free Tools
Regional availability is separate from a visibility failure. If the application is already installed and the two devices worked previously, continue with the receiver, radio and network checks. If you cannot obtain the application at all, confirm that the country and PC manufacturer are supported first.
If the device is found but no notification appears
Discovery and notification are separate stages. When the sender can see the receiver but the receiving prompt never appears on Windows, inspect Windows notification controls:

- Open Windows Settings and go to System > Notifications.
- Find Quick Share in the list of applications allowed to send notifications.
- Enable its notifications and make sure banners or other visible notification behavior is not disabled.
- Check that Focus Assist or Do not disturb is off, or that it is not suppressing Quick Share.
- Send a small test file again while Quick Share is open.
If Android is the receiver, keep the phone unlocked and leave Receive mode visible while repeating the test. A device that appears in the sender’s list but does not show a prompt is no longer a pure discovery problem. Do not keep changing visibility when the receiver is already listed; concentrate on the notification or receiving prompt.
Understand the Windows Bluetooth compatibility caveat
Google warns that a Windows device without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) extended advertising support may not be findable on certain networks. This explains a pattern in which Quick Share works on one network or in one location but fails on another, even though Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, visibility and distance look correct.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The official guidance identifies the capability but does not specify a particular replacement adapter or promise that a generic Bluetooth dongle will fix it. Check the PC’s Bluetooth hardware documentation or manufacturer support for BLE extended advertising support before buying accessories. Do not treat an unspecified adapter as a guaranteed remedy.
This caveat is especially relevant when the hotspot test succeeds but a particular Wi-Fi network does not, or when discovery varies by location. It is not proof that the hardware is incompatible; it is a reason to verify the capability instead of assuming that another adapter will solve the problem.

Phone sending to Windows PC
- On the PC, open Quick Share and set Device visibility to Everyone for the test.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on both devices.
- Connect both to the same Wi-Fi network, or use the phone-hotspot test if the network may isolate devices.
- Place the phone within 30 centimetres of the PC.
- Keep Quick Share open on Windows and search from the Android share sheet.
- If the PC appears but no prompt arrives, check Windows notifications and Focus Assist.
Windows PC sending to phone
- On Android, unlock the screen and open Quick Share’s Receive mode.
- Alternatively select Everyone for 10 minutes under Who can share with you.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on both devices and put them on the same network.
- Place the phone within 30 centimetres of the PC and start the transfer from Windows.
- If the phone still does not appear, cycle Airplane mode on the phone, reopen Quick Share on Windows and restart both devices.
How to interpret the result of each test
- It appears after changing Windows visibility: the PC was hidden or restricted to a group that did not include the phone. Restore your preferred visibility after testing.
- It appears only in Android Receive mode or Everyone for 10 minutes: the phone’s normal visibility selection was excluding the PC.
- It works within 30 centimetres but not at several metres: range or radio conditions are involved. Keep the devices within Google’s 5-metre guidance.
- It works through the phone hotspot but not the usual Wi-Fi: the usual network likely blocks local device-to-device traffic.
- It works on one network but fails on another despite correct settings: investigate the Windows PC’s BLE extended advertising support and the network’s handling of nearby-device discovery.
- The receiver appears but no prompt is shown: check notifications, Focus Assist or Do not disturb rather than repeating visibility changes.
- Nothing changes after all checks: recheck the Windows and Android version requirements, the correct Windows application and regional availability.
Record which test changes the result. A visibility change identifies a privacy setting; a hotspot change identifies network isolation; a close-range change identifies radio conditions; and a notification change identifies a Windows alert problem. This sequence prevents repeatedly performing the same reset without learning anything.
Restore privacy and normal operating settings
After a successful test, undo temporary exposure: set Windows Device visibility back from Everyone to Contacts, Your devices or No one as appropriate, and return Android from Receive mode or Everyone for 10 minutes to Your devices or Contacts. Leave Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on only if you normally need them; Quick Share’s discovery settings do not require you to keep a broadly visible profile permanently.
Before closing the troubleshooting session, make sure no transfer is still pending and that the receiver is no longer visible to more people than intended. If the problem returns, repeat the shortest successful path: verify the receiving device’s visibility, unlock Android if necessary, use the same network, move within 30 centimetres, and then check notifications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can my phone find other devices but not my Windows PC?
The PC may be hidden by Quick Share’s Device visibility setting. Open Quick Share on Windows, temporarily select Everyone, keep the app open, and search again from the phone. Also confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on both devices and that they use the same network.
Why can Windows see my phone, but the phone cannot see Windows?
Visibility is directional. When the phone is sending, inspect the PC’s Device visibility setting. Set it to Everyone for the test, keep Quick Share open, and then restore Contacts, Your devices or No one after discovery works.
Does Android need to be unlocked for Quick Share?
Yes. Google requires an unlocked Android screen when the phone is receiving. Open Receive mode and leave that screen visible while the Windows PC searches.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What distance should I use when Quick Share cannot discover a device?
Google’s general guidance is within 5 metres (16 feet). For troubleshooting, put the devices within 30 centimetres (1 foot), remove obstructions and search again. If that works only at close range, radio conditions or distance are involved.
Can a phone hotspot diagnose Quick Share network problems?
Yes. Turn off Wi-Fi on the phone, enable its hotspot, connect the Windows PC to that hotspot, and retry with Bluetooth enabled. If discovery works there but not on the normal network, that network likely blocks device-to-device traffic.
Will buying a generic Bluetooth adapter fix Quick Share?
Not necessarily. Google only warns that Windows hardware without Bluetooth Low Energy extended advertising may fail to be findable on certain networks. The guidance does not specify a compatible adapter, so verify the PC hardware capability instead of treating a generic dongle as a guaranteed fix.
What if the device appears but no Quick Share prompt arrives?
Treat it as a notification problem rather than a discovery problem. On Windows, enable Quick Share notifications under System > Notifications and check Focus Assist or Do not disturb. If Android receives, keep it unlocked with Receive mode visible.
Which computers and phones are supported?
Google lists 64-bit Windows 10 or later and Android 6.0 or later. ARM-based Windows devices require Windows 11 or later. Samsung PC owners should use Samsung’s Quick Share application from the Microsoft Store.
The Bottom Line
Check the receiving device first: make it visible, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, unlock Android when it receives, and test within 30 centimetres on the same network. Use the phone-hotspot test for network isolation, refresh the apps and radios, then check notifications and BLE extended-advertising compatibility if discovery varies by network. Restore your normal privacy settings after the transfer works.
