A query.dll error is not solved safely by downloading any file with that name. The correct repair depends on the application that requests the DLL, the complete error text, your Windows version, and whether the problem began after an update or installation. Start by recording those details, then update Windows and the affected application, repair protected system files with Microsoft’s tools, and follow the separate Windows Search procedure if Search is the component that fails.

Do not copy a replacement query.dll from a random DLL website into System32. The file may have the wrong architecture, build, signature, or dependencies, creating a new compatibility problem.

What a query.dll error means

A DLL (dynamic-link library) contains reusable code and data that Windows or an application loads when needed. Microsoft explains that an application can stop starting when a dependent DLL is upgraded, repaired, overwritten by an earlier version, or removed. Therefore, “query.dll was not found,” “Windows says query.dll is missing,” and similar messages identify a failed dependency, not a request for an arbitrary file with that filename.

The same filename can be requested by different Windows components and third-party programs. A dialog shown while searching files has a different repair path from one shown when launching a game, utility, or business application. Some DLLs are protected Windows components. Windows File Protection is designed to prevent unauthorized replacement of protected system files, so manually replacing one can make compatibility worse.

The wording also matters. “The module query.dll was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed” is a registration error. It does not prove that the DLL is missing or damaged, and many DLLs are not COM servers and should never be registered with regsvr32.

Record the failure before changing anything

Write down the information below or take a screenshot of the complete dialog. It determines which branch of this guide applies and gives a support technician enough context to avoid guessing.

  • The complete error text, including any numeric error code.
  • The name of the application or Windows feature that was open when the message appeared.
  • Your Windows edition and version, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the problem started after a Windows update, an application update, a driver or security-software change, or an interrupted installation.
  • Whether the error appears once, every time Windows starts, or only after a particular action such as searching, opening a document, or launching an application.

If the dialog names Windows Search or appears while using the taskbar or File Explorer search box, use the Windows Search section below. If it names a specific third-party program, begin with that publisher’s installer rather than trying to register or replace the DLL.

Use this repair order

The sequence below starts with reversible actions and moves toward recovery options that require more preparation.

Situation First repair path Why this order is appropriate Backup or recovery concern
One application reports the error Update or repair that application, then run Windows integrity checks The application may have installed, removed, or expected a different dependency Use the publisher’s installer and preserve application data
Windows Search reports the error Windows Update, Search and Indexing troubleshooter, process restart, then Search reset Search has a version-specific Microsoft troubleshooting path Advanced package or registry regeneration should follow Microsoft’s warnings
A protected Windows file appears missing System integrity and component repair, followed by repair or recovery installation if necessary Protected files should be restored by Windows servicing rather than copied manually Record backups and recovery options before repair or restore operations
Error began after a recent system change Undo or repair the change; consider System Restore if ordinary repairs fail The timing can identify the update or installation that introduced the conflict System Restore changes system state and should be planned, not improvised

Step 1: Restart, then install pending updates

Restart Windows once. A reboot can complete a pending file replacement or release a DLL that is still in use. After signing back in, open Windows Update in Settings and install available Windows updates. Restart again if Windows requests it.

Update the application that displays the message as well. Use its built-in update command or the publisher’s current installer. Do not obtain a standalone query.dll from a download repository; an apparently matching filename can still be the wrong build or architecture.

Test the same action that produced the error. If the message disappeared after the update, note which update resolved it. If it persists, continue without deleting or renaming system DLLs.

Step 2: Repair or reinstall the application that reports query.dll

When one program is the only place the error appears, treat that program as the primary suspect. Open Windows’ installed-apps settings and look for a Repair or Modify option if the publisher provides one. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s installer. Back up application-specific documents, profiles, templates, and license information first.

A repair installer is safer than copying a DLL because it can restore the complete dependency set and the correct files for that application. If the installer itself reports a missing dependency, record the exact message and contact the publisher. Tell support the application name, version, Windows version, complete query.dll text, and what changed immediately before the failure.

Step 3: Check Windows system integrity

Microsoft’s repair sequence uses Windows integrity and component-repair tools from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt. Open Start, search for Terminal or Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Run the integrity check documented for your installed Windows version, including:

Rank #2
Microsoft System Builder | Windоws 11 Home | Intended use for new systems | Install on a new PC | Branded by Microsoft
  • STREAMLINED & INTUITIVE UI, DVD FORMAT | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
  • OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC with no prior version of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
  • OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
  • PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
  • GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
sfc /scannow

Allow the scan to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause while protected files are checked. Read the final result. If Windows reports that it repaired files, restart and test the failing application again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, use Microsoft’s current component-repair procedure for your Windows build from the same elevated window, then run the integrity check again as directed by Microsoft.

The exact component-repair command and servicing behavior can vary by Windows version and servicing state. Follow the current Microsoft documentation for your edition rather than pasting a command intended for another release. Keep the final messages from both tools; they are useful if you need Microsoft or the application publisher to investigate.

Step 4: Follow the Windows Search procedure when Search is involved

If the error appears while using Windows Search, Microsoft provides a dedicated sequence. Perform the steps in order and test Search after each one.

  1. Check for Windows updates. Open Settings, go to Windows Update, install available updates, restart if requested, and try the search again.
  2. Run Search and Indexing troubleshooter. Where it is supported on your Windows version, open an elevated or ordinary command window as appropriate and run msdt.exe -ep WindowsHelp id SearchDiagnostic. Follow the checks it offers and record any result it cannot correct.
  3. Restart the Windows Search process. Open Task Manager, locate SearchUI.exe on Windows 10 or SearchHost.exe on Windows 11, select it, and choose End task. Windows should start the search process again. Test the search box after it returns.
  4. Reset Windows Search. Use Microsoft’s reset method for the installed Windows version. The procedure differs between releases, so use the version-specific instructions rather than importing a script or registry file from an unrelated guide. A reset can rebuild Search’s local state and may require time for indexing to complete again.
  5. Regenerate package data only for advanced failures. Microsoft documents advanced procedures that regenerate the Microsoft.Windows.Search or MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS package data and registry state. These steps are version-specific and carry explicit warnings. Read the applicable Microsoft instructions completely, create the recommended recovery options, and do not substitute a command from a different Windows release.

If Search works after a process restart but fails again after every reboot, record that pattern. It points toward a recurring package, update, or system-state problem rather than a one-time locked process.

Step 5: Consider System Restore or Windows recovery

If the error began immediately after an update, installation, or system change and the preceding repairs did not help, System Restore may return Windows system state to an earlier restore point. The old 2011 Microsoft Q&A reply about query.dll suggested System Restore, but that community advice is historical troubleshooting context, not a universal current fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using System Restore, back up personal files and record which applications or updates may be affected. Confirm that you know how to sign in and reinstall any software that might be rolled back. If no suitable restore point exists, or if protected files remain damaged, use Windows’ supported repair or recovery installation options. Read each screen carefully so you choose a repair that preserves personal data when that is your goal, and maintain a separate backup in case recovery cannot complete.

Why regsvr32 is not a general query.dll fix

The 2011 Microsoft Q&A response mentioned trying:

regsvr32.exe query.dll

That command is appropriate only when the DLL is a COM server that exposes a registration entry point and is installed in the correct location. Many DLLs are ordinary libraries and do not implement DllRegisterServer. Running regsvr32 on one can produce “the module was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed,” which describes an unsuitable registration operation, not necessarily a bad file.

Do not copy the DLL to another folder and retry with a different regsvr32 executable simply to make the dialog disappear. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit components also use different registration contexts. If the application publisher specifically instructs you to register its COM component, use the publisher’s exact path, architecture, and command and verify that the file came from the original installer.

What not to do

  • Do not download query.dll from an unaffiliated DLL repository and place it in System32 or an application folder.
  • Do not overwrite a protected Windows DLL with an older copy from another PC, installation image, or forum post.
  • Do not assume that a matching filename means matching architecture, build, digital signature, or dependencies.
  • Do not repeatedly run registration commands when the error occurs in Windows Search or an ordinary application.
  • Do not delete registry keys or Search package data without the version-specific Microsoft instructions and a recovery plan.

Verify the result and prepare useful support details

After each repair, reproduce the original action: launch the named application, perform the search, or restart Windows if the error appeared at boot. A successful test should complete without the dialog and should not create a new crash or missing-dependency message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem remains, collect the complete dialog, application name and version, Windows edition and architecture, update or installation timeline, steps already attempted, and the final output from integrity tools. For Windows Search, include whether the troubleshooter ran, whether SearchUI.exe or SearchHost.exe restarted successfully, and whether a reset changed the behavior. Give those details to the application publisher or Microsoft support instead of sending an unexplained DLL file.

Choosing the next repair based on the symptom

Observed symptom Most useful next action
Only one third-party application fails Repair or reinstall that application with its publisher’s installer; then run Windows integrity checks.
Several Windows features fail, or a protected-file warning appears Run the documented integrity and component-repair tools; escalate to Windows recovery if repairs cannot restore the file.
Failure occurs only in taskbar or File Explorer search Use the Windows Search update, troubleshooter, process-restart, reset, and advanced package-regeneration sequence.
Registration error mentions DllRegisterServer Confirm whether the DLL is a COM server and follow the application publisher’s registration instructions; do not treat regsvr32 as a universal repair.
Error started after a known system change Repair or remove the changed application or update, then consider System Restore with backups and recovery options recorded.
