Connect PULSE Explore to a PS5 with the included PlayStation Link USB adapter, not the console’s ordinary Bluetooth menu. Re-run the short pairing sequence, check USB placement and software, then reset the earbuds before attempting any reset that erases pairings.
Understand the connection your PS5 expects
PULSE Explore earbuds use two separate wireless paths. The normal PS5 path is PlayStation Link through the USB adapter supplied with the earbuds. The adapter is paired with the earbuds out of the box, so a first-time setup should not require you to search for the earbuds in the PS5’s regular Bluetooth-device screen.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The earbuds can also use Bluetooth with compatible devices. PlayStation says certain PlayStation Link devices can maintain a connection to a supported PlayStation Link device and a Bluetooth device at the same time. That capability does not change the documented PS5 setup: for console game audio, start with the included PlayStation Link adapter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis distinction explains a common misleading symptom: the earbuds may turn on or work with a phone while the PS5 still has no usable audio connection. Power and Bluetooth pairing do not prove that the PlayStation Link path between the earbuds, adapter and console is working.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before troubleshooting, check the simple failure points
- Use the supplied adapter. Confirm that the PlayStation Link USB adapter is present and inserted directly into a PS5 USB Type-A port. A standalone replacement adapter is not pre-paired and follows a different pairing procedure.
- Charge the earbuds. Put both earbuds in their charging case and check the charging or battery indication. If either earbud is completely flat, leave it in the case long enough to charge before retrying. A dead earbud cannot complete the wireless search.
- Keep both earbuds together. The documented setup starts with both earbuds docked, then removes both. Do not begin by taking out only one earbud or leave one in the case while investigating the other.
- Remove other variables. Temporarily disconnect another PlayStation Link device or Bluetooth source if you are unsure which device is currently connected. This prevents you from mistaking a connection to another device for a PS5 failure.
- Check the port type. The standard instructions call for a USB Type-A port. Make sure the adapter is fully seated and is not being held partly out by a crowded port, cable or console stand.
These checks are deliberately low-risk. None erases saved connections, so perform them before any factory-style procedure.
Repeat the official PS5 connection sequence
The initial search window is brief, so follow the order below rather than leaving the earbuds out of the case while you prepare the console.
- Turn on the PS5. Wait until the console has finished starting up.
- Dock both earbuds. Place the left and right earbuds in the charging case and make sure they are seated.
- Insert the PlayStation Link adapter. Plug the included adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port. If a rear port is blocked or gives an unreliable connection, use a front USB port; PlayStation’s adapter guidance recommends the front ports when access or interference is a concern.
- Remove both earbuds. Take both earbuds out of the case after the adapter is connected. They begin searching for an available PlayStation Link connection.
- Complete the on-screen setup. Follow any prompt shown by the PS5. When the adapter is connected, its indicator turns solid white.
Each earbud searches for about 30 seconds. If no available connection is found, the earbuds turn off. That timeout can look like a failed pairing even when the hardware is working. Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to start another search, then give the PS5 a moment to complete the connection.
Do not wait indefinitely after the earbuds shut down. Put both back in the case, leave the adapter inserted, remove both again and press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud. This starts a fresh search without changing the stored PlayStation Link or Bluetooth pairings.
If the adapter is not recognized or the connection drops
Try a different PS5 USB Type-A port
Unplug the adapter, wait a few seconds, and insert it firmly into another Type-A port. A front port is the preferred retry when a port is obstructed, crowded by another device, or producing interference. Do not infer that the earbuds are defective solely because one port does not establish a connection.
Test the port with the adapter itself rather than adding an unverified hub or extension to the chain. The documented setup uses the adapter directly in the console. If the adapter works in one Type-A port but not another, continue using the working port and report the difference to PlayStation Support if the problem returns.
Watch the adapter indicator
A solid white adapter indicator is the documented sign that the adapter is connected. If you never see that state, concentrate on the console port, the adapter’s seating, and PS5 software before resetting the earbuds. If the indicator becomes solid white but the earbuds still power down after their search period, press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud and repeat the search while the adapter remains inserted.

The indicator gives you a useful split in the diagnosis. No solid white state points first toward the USB connection or console recognition. A solid white state means the adapter has connected, so focus next on the earbuds’ search timing, software versions, charging and pairing state.
Restart the setup instead of waiting indefinitely
Once an earbud search has timed out, it does not continue indefinitely. Dock both earbuds, leave the adapter in place, remove them again, and press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud. This gives you a fresh search without changing stored pairings.
Update the PS5 and PlayStation Link devices
Out-of-date system or device software can prevent a connection that otherwise follows the correct sequence. Install available PS5 system updates, then check for updates for the earbuds and the included adapter in the PS5’s accessory settings. Menu wording can vary slightly by system software release; use the entries for system software updates and PlayStation Link device software.
In PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance for PlayStation Link 2.0, both earbuds and the included adapter should be running version 2.0 or newer. Treat that requirement as a pair: updating only the earbuds or only the adapter can leave the connection problem unresolved. After updating, restart the PS5, dock both earbuds, and repeat the documented setup.

- For the console: open Settings, choose System, then open the system-software update area and install any offered update.
- For PlayStation Link hardware: open Settings, choose Accessories, and select the PlayStation Link device-software option if it is shown. Keep the adapter inserted while the PS5 checks it.
If the PlayStation Link device does not appear in the accessory area, return to the USB checks rather than assuming that an update is unavailable. The console must detect the adapter before it can offer device software for it.
Update before resetting whenever possible. A reset changes stored state, while an update addresses compatibility without intentionally deleting your pairings. Once both earbuds and the adapter meet the version 2.0-or-newer guidance, repeat the complete dock, insert, remove and on-screen setup order.
Use the non-destructive earbud reset first
When the basic setup and updates do not help, reset the earbuds themselves before using a reset that clears stored connections. This first reset is designed to preserve your saved PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings and your audio settings.

- Remove both earbuds from the charging case.
- On one removed earbud, press and hold its PlayStation Link button for at least 12 seconds.
- Repeat the same 12-second-or-longer hold on the other earbud.
- Return both earbuds to the case, then remove them and retry the PS5 setup with the adapter inserted.
Holding for less than 12 seconds may not trigger the reset. The reset affects the earbuds’ operating state; it does not erase PlayStation Link pairings, Bluetooth pairings, or audio settings. Because it is non-destructive, it is the appropriate first reset for a PS5 that no longer recognizes earbuds that previously worked.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Reset both sides, not just the side that appears silent. The documented procedure treats the left and right earbuds individually, and completing only one hold can leave the pair in different states. Docking both after the two holds lets them return to the case before you retry the console connection.
Know what the more disruptive resets erase
PlayStation documents separate procedures for the earbuds, charging case, earbud-to-case synchronization, and USB adapter. They are not interchangeable. Use them only after the non-destructive earbud reset and software checks, and read the on-screen or support instructions for the exact button sequence for your hardware.
| Procedure | What it targets | Effect on stored connections | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earbud reset | Both earbuds, reset individually while removed from the case | Does not clear PlayStation Link or Bluetooth pairings or audio settings | First reset when the earbuds will not reconnect |
| Paired-connection wipe | Stored connection data in the earbuds | Deletes PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings | Only when you are prepared to pair and configure the earbuds again |
| Earbud/case synchronization | Relationship between the earbuds and their charging case | Also deletes the stored PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings | When the earbuds and case are no longer synchronizing correctly |
| Charging-case reset | The charging case | May change stored state; follow PlayStation’s case-reset instructions before proceeding | When case behavior or charging detection is the problem |
| USB-adapter reset | The PlayStation Link adapter | Clears PlayStation Link connections | When the adapter itself remains unable to establish a connection after port and software checks |
A documented adapter reset uses a 30-second hold. Because it clears PlayStation Link connections, do not use it as a routine retry. After any destructive reset, you may need to run the appropriate pairing procedure again. The success check and exact button location depend on whether you are resetting the adapter, case, or earbuds, so use the procedure for that component rather than applying the earbud sequence to every device.
The practical order is therefore: retry the connection, change the USB port, update the PS5 and both PlayStation Link components, perform the two individual 12-second earbud resets, and only then consider a paired-connection wipe, case/earbud synchronization, case reset or adapter reset. This order minimizes the chance of erasing settings while the failure is still caused by a port, timeout or software mismatch.

What to do when you have a replacement adapter
The adapter supplied with PULSE Explore is pre-paired. A separately purchased PlayStation Link USB adapter is not pre-paired, so inserting it and waiting for the earbuds to connect will not reproduce the out-of-box experience. If the original adapter is missing or confirmed faulty, use PlayStation’s standalone-adapter pairing guide. Treat a replacement as a conditional solution, not the default fix for a setup problem.
Before obtaining another adapter, verify the original one in more than one PS5 Type-A port, install current PS5 and PlayStation Link software, and complete the non-destructive earbud reset. Those checks distinguish a pairing-state problem from an adapter that genuinely needs replacement.

A replacement also changes the next step: you must account for its lack of factory pairing. Do not judge a new adapter defective merely because it does not connect automatically. Follow the separate pairing procedure for a standalone adapter, and be prepared for the connection records cleared by any adapter reset.
Keep Bluetooth separate from the PS5 fix
If you previously paired the earbuds to a phone, tablet, or another compatible device, that Bluetooth pairing does not replace the PlayStation Link connection required for the standard PS5 setup. Bluetooth and PlayStation Link use distinct connection paths. A Bluetooth connection can explain why the earbuds power on while the PS5 still shows no audio device.
For console troubleshooting, leave the included adapter connected and run the PS5 sequence. Use Bluetooth pairing only when you intentionally want to connect the earbuds to a compatible non-PS5 device, or when your particular PlayStation Link setup supports simultaneous connections and you understand which device is carrying the audio.
Do not delete a working Bluetooth pairing just to make the PS5 setup work. The initial earbud reset preserves that pairing. Only choose a paired-connection wipe or earbud/case synchronization when you accept that both PlayStation Link and Bluetooth records, along with audio settings, will be removed.

When to stop resetting and contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support after you have verified the supplied adapter, tried another PS5 Type-A port, completed the documented setup, installed current PS5 and PlayStation Link software, and performed the non-destructive earbud reset. Tell support exactly what happens: whether the adapter reaches a solid white indicator, whether both earbuds remain on for the 30-second search, which software versions are installed, and whether the failure follows the adapter or the console.
Also explain whether the original adapter is being used, whether the earbuds work with Bluetooth, and which reset procedures have already been attempted. This prevents support from treating a replacement adapter as though it were the pre-paired unit or asking you to repeat a reset that already erased connections.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do PULSE Explore earbuds connect to a PS5 through ordinary Bluetooth?
The documented PS5 setup uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Bluetooth is a separate path for compatible devices, so do not use the PS5’s ordinary Bluetooth-device flow as the primary console setup.
Why do my earbuds turn off while I am trying to pair them?
Each earbud searches for about 30 seconds. If it finds no available PlayStation Link connection, it turns off. Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to search again while the adapter remains inserted.
What does a solid white light on the adapter mean?
A solid white adapter indicator is the documented sign that the adapter is connected. If it never appears, check the USB Type-A port, adapter seating and PS5 software before resetting the earbuds.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will the 12-second earbud reset erase my pairings?
No. Holding the PlayStation Link button on each removed earbud for at least 12 seconds resets the earbuds without clearing PlayStation Link pairings, Bluetooth pairings or audio settings.
What is erased by a paired-connection wipe?
It deletes the stored PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. Use it only when you are ready to pair and configure the earbuds again.
Is a replacement PlayStation Link adapter plug-and-play?
The adapter supplied with PULSE Explore is pre-paired, but a standalone replacement is not. A replacement requires PlayStation’s separate adapter-pairing procedure.
Which software versions should the earbuds and adapter use?
In PlayStation’s PlayStation Link 2.0 troubleshooting guidance, both earbuds and the included adapter should be on version 2.0 or newer. Update both components rather than only one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I use a front or rear PS5 USB port?
Try a front USB Type-A port when a rear port is blocked, crowded or unreliable. PlayStation’s adapter guidance recommends the front ports when access or interference is a concern.
The Bottom Line
Use the included, pre-paired PlayStation Link adapter; dock both earbuds, insert the adapter, remove both earbuds and complete the PS5 prompt. Remember the roughly 30-second search timeout, update the PS5 and both devices to current software (version 2.0 or newer in the PlayStation Link 2.0 guidance), then perform the individual 12-second earbud reset. Reserve pairing wipes, case or synchronization resets and the 30-second adapter reset for later, because those procedures can erase connections.
