Fixing a PSP game in PPSSPP starts with identifying where the failure occurs. A single game that will not load usually points to its ISO or game-specific settings; several games failing, a black screen before gameplay, or PPSSPP itself crashing calls for emulator, driver, or backend checks. Save problems require a separate branch because normal in-game saves and PPSSPP save states are different files with different compatibility rules.
This guide covers the common cases behind searches such as PSP game black screen PPSSPP, PPSSPP game won’t load, PPSSPP save not showing, and PPSSPP save state won’t load. Make a copy of your saves before changing builds or attempting recovery.

Start by classifying the failure
Do not change several emulator options at once. First test another game, note your operating system and PPSSPP version, and decide whether the problem is the game image, graphics output, the emulator process, or saved data. This keeps every change reversible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you see | Most useful first branch |
|---|---|
| One game fails, while PPSSPP and other games work | Check the image format, run Calculate CRC, and remove game-specific graphics tweaks. |
| Several games fail or PPSSPP crashes during play | Restore defaults, disable common crash triggers, then test drivers and the rendering backend. |
| A game opens to a black screen | Run the image directly, restore graphics defaults, and try one different backend. |
| The game says no save exists | Locate the virtual Memory Stick, then verify the save’s game ID and region. |
| A save state will not load | Check the PPSSPP build that created it; save states are version-bound and separate from normal saves. |
When the basic branches do not resolve the issue, record the game title, release region, file format, PPSSPP build, device or operating system, exact error, and whether the failure is reproducible. Those details are needed for meaningful support.

Before troubleshooting: protect the files that still work
Copy the entire PPSSPP Memory Stick save folder to another location before deleting, moving, or converting anything. A backup lets you test a clean configuration without sacrificing progress. Also keep the original ISO, CSO, or CHD unchanged while testing; work from a duplicate if you need to verify a damaged file.
Save states are not a substitute for this backup. They are separate snapshots, tied to the emulator version that wrote them, and may stop working after a build change. Use the game’s own save menu for the dependable copy of story progress.
When one PSP game will not launch
Load the disc image as a file
Use PPSSPP’s game browser to open the ISO, CSO, or CHD itself. Do not extract the image into a directory of loose files. Some games depend on the original disc layout. PPSSPP’s official black-screen guide states: “Just run the ISO file directly in PPSSPP, do not extract it into files.” See PPSSPP’s black-screen troubleshooting guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you currently have an extracted folder, keep it for reference, but obtain or restore the original image and load that image directly. An image that launches in another emulator is not automatically a valid PPSSPP image, so continue with the integrity check below.
Run Calculate CRC, without treating it as an absolute verdict
In PPSSPP’s game list, right-click the game on a desktop or long-press it on a touch device and choose Calculate CRC. PPSSPP 1.16 and later can display a green notice when the calculated checksum matches a known-valid image. The official documentation also cautions that the absence of that green notice does not prove the file is invalid: an unlisted but correctly dumped image may have no matching database entry.
If the CRC identifies a bad or altered dump, replace the image with a clean dump from your own legally obtained disc. If no green notice appears but the game works elsewhere, continue testing rather than deleting it solely because the notice is missing.

Undo game-specific graphics hacks
Open the game’s properties and restore graphics settings to their defaults. During diagnosis, avoid Speedhacks options that alter rendering behavior. PPSSPP specifically warns that options such as Skip buffer effects can break graphics in some games and produce a black screen. Once the game launches reliably, add any performance change back individually and test after each change.

Try a different rendering backend
A backend failure can affect one title or a group of titles. Change only the backend, restart the game, and record the result. On Windows, the official instructions identify OpenGL and Direct3D 11 as alternatives; the current setup guide recommends OpenGL on Android or Direct3D 11 on Windows when a title shows a black screen or crashes immediately. Menu names and available backends vary by platform and PPSSPP version, so use the options shown on your device. If the change does not help, return to the previous backend instead of stacking more tweaks.
Compare ISO, CSO, and CHD deliberately
There is no universally best format for every device. The setup guide describes the trade-offs as follows:
| Format | Compression and compatibility | What to do when troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| ISO | Uncompressed and described by PPSSPP as offering the highest compatibility. | Use or test an ISO first when a compressed image is suspected. |
| CSO | Compressed; very heavy compression can cause stutter. | Test the corresponding ISO or a less aggressively compressed image. |
| CHD | Compressed and supported by PPSSPP from version 1.17. | Confirm that the installed build supports CHD, then compare with the original ISO if loading fails. |
These are format characteristics, not a promise that converting a file will repair a bad dump. Preserve the original and make one format change at a time. The PPSSPP setup guide documents the format support and first-launch configuration.
When several games fail or PPSSPP crashes
Restore the emulator’s defaults
A setting that is harmless in one title can crash another. Reset PPSSPP’s settings to their defaults, then test a known-working game before reintroducing custom options. The crash guide identifies cheats, networking or WLAN, Fast Memory, and a manually changed CPU clock among the common causes. Turn each of those off while diagnosing. Do not disable and re-enable all of them at once; change one item, relaunch, and note whether the failure changes.

On a computer, install the current graphics driver supplied for the GPU and operating system. Driver problems can appear even when another game happens to run. Recalculate the game image’s CRC as described earlier, because a driver update cannot repair a damaged or incorrectly laid-out image. The official crash instructions are at PPSSPP keeps crashing.

Change the backend only after the reset
With defaults restored, test one alternative backend. On Windows, compare OpenGL and Direct3D 11; on Android, OpenGL is the starting recommendation in the setup guidance for black screens or immediate crashes. A successful launch on one backend is useful evidence about the graphics path, but it does not establish that the other backend is defective for every game. Keep the working choice and report the failing backend if you seek support.
If PPSSPP itself will not open
Separate an application-startup failure from a game-load failure. On Windows, the official instructions include updating the graphics driver, installing a current PPSSPP build over the existing installation, and changing GraphicsBackend in the configuration file when the normal interface cannot be reached. Installing over an existing build should preserve your data, but keep the Memory Stick backup made above.
On Android, older official troubleshooting guidance recommends updating PPSSPP through Google Play. Android menus and permissions change over time, so follow the current device-specific documentation if that route is not available. Do not copy a desktop configuration file into Android; the storage and permission model is different.
How PPSSPP stores ordinary saves
PPSSPP emulates the PSP Memory Stick with a directory on your device. Normal in-game saves are usually in PSP/SAVEDATA. They are not stored beside the ISO by requirement, and the exact parent directory depends on the platform, installation type, and folder you selected when granting storage access.
Find the Memory Stick from PPSSPP first
Use the application’s Memory Stick command instead of guessing a universal path. On desktop versions, the FAQ identifies File → Open Memory Stick as the direct way to open the correct folder. Once it opens, enter the PSP folder and then SAVEDATA. Keep the folder names and their capitalization unchanged when copying files.
Platform-specific locations and permissions
| Platform or installation | What the official guidance says | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows portable installation | The memstick directory may sit beside the PPSSPP executable. |
If PPSSPP cannot write beside the program, check the user’s My Documents location and use File → Open Memory Stick. |
| macOS and Linux | The documented default is ~/.config/ppsspp. |
Open the Memory Stick from PPSSPP so a custom or relocated folder is not missed. |
| Android 11 and newer | The storage folder is the one selected and granted during first launch. The Android guide recommends choosing or creating a PSP folder. |
Reopen PPSSPP’s selected storage folder and look for PSP/SAVEDATA. ISO and CSO files may be stored elsewhere. |
Read the Android save-data and storage guide when Android’s permission picker has changed or the folder is inaccessible. The general save FAQ is also at Save games won’t load.

When an in-game save is missing or will not load
Check that the save belongs to the exact game release
Look at the game ID displayed by PPSSPP and compare it with the prefix of the folder inside PSP/SAVEDATA. Different regional releases commonly use different IDs and save files. A save created by a European release may not load when the game image is the US release. PPSSPP’s documentation puts it plainly: “Different regions have different codes – and often create different save files.” Do not rename folders casually; first identify the matching title and region.
Recommended Free Tools
Also check that you are launching the same edition for which the save was made. A remaster, demo, patched image, or separately numbered release can have a different ID even when the title looks similar. If you changed images, keep the old one until you have verified the save with the original release.
Consider device-MAC binding only as a specialist case
Some games bind savedata to the PSP’s device MAC address. The official guide names Invizimals as a known example and notes that other games may behave similarly. This is not a general fix for missing saves. Preserve the current MAC value, make a full save backup, and treat any MAC modification as a last-resort, game-specific procedure after confirming that the title uses this protection. Changing it blindly can make other saves harder to use.
Rule out corruption without destroying the evidence
Corrupt savedata can fail to appear, crash the game, or produce glitches. PPSSPP lists hacked saves, cheats, a crash or power loss during saving, and game bugs as possible causes. Copy the entire save directory before trying a replacement or cleanup. Test the backup copy, not your only original. Some games also have bugs that delete savedata when free space is low, so check available storage but do not assume every missing save is recoverable.
If one slot is damaged while another works, remove only the damaged copy from the test location and confirm that the game still sees the healthy slot. Keep the original backup untouched. A save from a different ID, region, or game revision may look structurally correct yet remain unusable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why a save state will not load
A save state is a snapshot of emulator memory, not a normal PSP Memory Stick file. PPSSPP stores states separately in PPSSPP_STATE, while ordinary saves remain in PSP/SAVEDATA. They therefore require different troubleshooting.
Best Value
Match the PPSSPP version that created the state
The official FAQ says save states are bound to the PPSSPP version that wrote them. A state made by a development build may not load on a stable release, and a state from another build can fail after an update. Reopen the state with the same PPSSPP build, if available, rather than repeatedly editing the file or changing unrelated graphics options.
Do not treat a state failure as proof that the in-game save is gone. Start the game normally and use its own load menu; the Memory Stick save may still be intact. For future updates, create an in-game save first, exit cleanly, and back up PSP/SAVEDATA before switching builds. Keep states as convenience checkpoints, not the sole copy of progress.
A reversible recovery sequence
Use this order when you need a disciplined reset rather than random experimentation:
- Close PPSSPP and copy the Memory Stick’s
PSP/SAVEDATAfolder, plus any states you want to preserve. - Record the PPSSPP version, operating system, game ID, region, image format, and the exact symptom.
- Load the ISO, CSO, or CHD directly; do not use an extracted disc-image folder.
- Run Calculate CRC and retain the image unless the result identifies a known problem.
- Restore graphics and speed settings to defaults, and disable cheats, WLAN, Fast Memory, and custom CPU-clock changes while testing crashes.
- Test the game once on the current backend, then try one alternative backend if the screen remains black or PPSSPP crashes.
- If only this game fails, compare its ID, region, and image with a known-working release. If several games fail, update the computer’s graphics driver or reinstall the current PPSSPP build over the existing one.
- For a missing save, open the Memory Stick from PPSSPP, inspect
PSP/SAVEDATA, and verify the folder’s game ID and region before changing files. - For a failed state, use the same PPSSPP build that created it and test the game’s ordinary load menu separately.
After each step, record whether the symptom changed. If a change fixes the problem, leave unrelated settings at their defaults and reintroduce optional tweaks individually.
What to include when asking for further help
If the checklist fails, provide the exact game title and region, PPSSPP version and build type, operating system and device, image format, backend, whether other games work, and the wording of any error. State whether you are loading an in-game save or a save state, and describe where the save folder was found. The official crash documentation recommends reproducing the failure and supplying logs and system details; a reproducible case with those identifiers is far more actionable than a screenshot alone.
Do not upload personal save data publicly unless you understand what it contains. Share configuration and log information first, and keep the untouched backup in case a helper asks you to test a clean copy.
