How to Fix PS5 Game Crashes, Freezes, and Error Messages

A PS5 game crash does not have one universal fix. The fastest safe route is to identify whether one game, several games, the console itself, or a physical disc is failing; record the exact error code and trigger; then work from reversible checks toward code-specific recovery. Restarting, updating, moving a PS5 game off USB extended storage, rebuilding the database, or reinstalling can help in the right situation, but each addresses a different symptom.

Before changing anything, write down the complete message or code, what you were doing when it appeared, whether the failure is repeatable, whether it began after an update, and where the game is installed. PlayStation Support asks for the error code or message, a description and reproduction steps, and a screenshot or video when contacting support. Keep that information throughout the process.

First, classify what is actually failing

Use the symptom pattern to choose a starting branch. This is triage, not proof that a particular component has failed. A single title can have a title-specific problem, while a console-wide freeze can involve system software, storage, heat, or another system-level condition.

What you see Useful questions Best first route Risk of the first step
Only one downloaded game crashes Does it fail at launch, after a particular loading screen, or after an update? Is there a code? Look up the exact code, update the game and PS5, then use the game-launch instructions for that title. Reversible; do not reset the console first.
Several games or applications fail Do they fail from both internal and expanded storage? Do system menus also become slow or unresponsive? Install system updates, check storage location, and use the appropriate Safe Mode tool if ordinary restarts do not help. Begin with non-destructive options; resets erase data.
The entire PS5 freezes or powers off Is there an overheating warning, unusually hot enclosure, blocked ventilation, or an immediate shutdown under load? Handle an actual heat or shutdown symptom as its own branch, then consider system-level recovery and repair. Cooling and a normal shutdown are reversible; Safe Mode resets are not.
A disc game, Blu-ray, or DVD is not recognized Does another disc work? Is the disc inserted correctly and visibly dirty or scratched? Follow the disc-reading checks and test another disc before changing software settings. Cleaning with a soft, clean cloth is low risk.
A named error code appears Copy every character, including hyphens, and note whether it appears before launch, after launch, during an update, or during network or account activity. Use the PlayStation error-code index and the instructions for that exact code. Code-specific guidance is safer than applying a different code’s remedy.

Do not treat a repeatable crash at one point as proof of a defective console, and do not assume that a crash without a code has the same cause as a system freeze. The distinctions determine which evidence is useful and which recovery step is proportionate.

Try the reversible checks in this order

These checks are the sensible starting point for a game that will not start, crashes during play, or freezes without a destructive warning. They are official PlayStation troubleshooting paths, not guarantees that every crash will be cured.

  1. Restart the PS5 normally. Close the game if the interface still responds, choose the power menu, and restart. If the console is unresponsive, hold the power button until it turns off, wait for it to finish shutting down, and start it again. Avoid unplugging a running console unless the system gives you no other way to stop it.
  2. Install available updates. Check for the latest PS5 system software and the affected game’s update. A title that fails immediately after a system or game update should still be tested with the newest available patch; do not assume an older installation is preferable without a documented reason.
  3. Use the exact error instructions. Search the PlayStation Support error-code index using the complete code, not a shortened phrase such as “PS5 crash.” The index covers different categories, including update, network, account, and other console functions. Follow the page for your code in its listed order.
  4. Check account and license-related guidance when the symptom is a launch failure. PlayStation’s game-launch instructions include account or license checks where relevant. If those checks do not resolve the title, delete and reinstall the affected game when the guidance calls for it. Reinstalling is aimed at damaged or incomplete game data; it is not a universal answer for system-wide freezes.
  5. Verify where the game is installed. If the title is on USB extended storage and will not start, move its game data to PS5 console storage or an installed M.2 SSD. Sony’s storage guidance states that PS5 games must be moved off USB extended storage to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play. USB extended storage remains useful for storing PS5 games, but it is not the location from which those PS5 titles run.

After each step, reproduce the same action that caused the failure. Note whether the result changed; changing several variables at once makes it harder to identify the useful step.

Why the exact error code matters

Two codes that can both be described casually as a “crash” have different official instructions. The code identifies the support path; it does not merely label the symptom.

CE-109573-5: an error while starting a game

PlayStation Support describes CE-109573-5 as: An error occurred when starting the game on your PlayStation®5 console. Its listed sequence is to restart the console, delete and reinstall the game, rebuild the database if necessary, and update system software if the issue continues. Apply those steps to this code rather than assuming they are the correct sequence for every CE-series message.

CE-108262-9: system software or application data could not be read

For CE-108262-9, Sony recommends updating system software. If the error occurs after a game or application launches, reinstall that game or application; the instructions also include rebuilding the database. If the problem persists, the page directs you toward resetting the console and warns that a reset erases console data. Back up what you can before reaching that step.

These examples show why copying the full code is important. A similar-looking number can refer to a different operation, and instructions for one code should not be mixed into another code’s procedure. If the index does not identify your message, preserve a screenshot and the exact wording for PlayStation Support.

Use Safe Mode without confusing maintenance with a reset

Safe Mode exposes separate maintenance tools. It is not a single “repair” button, and the menu choices have different effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to enter Safe Mode

  1. Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for three seconds. The power indicator flashes briefly and then turns off.
  2. When the console is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
  3. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

PlayStation Support cautions: Some Safe Mode options will result in the loss of data. Back up saved data and other important console data before selecting a destructive option. If the console cannot stay on long enough to back up, do not assume a reset will preserve anything.

What each Safe Mode option does

Option Purpose and appropriate symptom Data consequence
Restart PS5 Leaves Safe Mode and starts the console normally. No intentional data deletion.
Repair Console Storage Checks or repairs console storage when the PS5 does not start properly or storage behavior suggests a problem. Sony says this option does not erase data.
Update System Software Installs a current system-software update when normal updating is unavailable or part of a code-specific procedure. Not a factory reset; follow the on-screen requirements.
Clear System Software Cache Clears temporary system data. Sony suggests it for system-feature issues or noticeable performance drops. Designed as a non-reset maintenance step, but read the current on-screen warning.
Rebuild Database Scans the drive and recreates the content database. It is listed for some launch and data-reading errors. It is not the same as resetting the PS5; back up first as a general precaution.
Reset PS5 Returns the console to a reset state when less destructive, code-specific steps have failed. Deletes user data. Back up first if possible.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Removes the system software and reinstalls it when the official recovery path requires a complete reinstall. Deletes user data and requires the current Sony reinstall procedure.

Choose the least destructive option that matches the documented symptom. “Rebuild Database” is not a synonym for “Reset PS5,” and neither option should be selected simply because a game crashed once.

When the game is on USB extended storage

A PS5-format game can be stored on USB extended storage, but Sony’s storage instructions require PS5 games to be moved to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play. This makes storage location an essential launch check, especially when a title was recently moved, the USB drive was disconnected, or several titles on that drive fail.

  1. Open the PS5 settings and storage controls, then identify whether the affected PS5 game is listed on USB extended storage.
  2. Use the move option to transfer the game’s data to PS5 console storage or an installed M.2 SSD.
  3. Wait for the transfer to finish before launching the title, and keep the USB drive connected if other installed data is still being used.
  4. Test the game again from its new location. Record whether only that title moved or whether other games on the drive also fail.

Do not infer from this rule that every crash is a storage fault. It is a specific requirement for running PS5 games, not a diagnosis of a failing USB device or M.2 SSD.

When a physical disc is not read

Use this branch only when the symptom involves a disc: the game icon does not appear, installation cannot begin, or the console cannot read a Blu-ray or DVD. Downloaded-game crashes are not fixed by cleaning a disc.

  1. Confirm that the disc is inserted in the correct orientation for your PS5 model.
  2. Remove it and inspect the readable surface. Clean it with a soft, clean cloth, wiping gently rather than using abrasive material or liquid cleaners.
  3. Insert the disc again and test it.
  4. Try another game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD. If other discs work, the original disc is the more relevant variable; if none work, continue with PlayStation’s disc-reading support path.
  5. If the official disc guidance calls for software maintenance, use Safe Mode’s database-rebuild step and then follow the current system-software reinstall instructions only if the documented sequence reaches that point.

A microfiber disc-cleaning cloth is a narrowly appropriate accessory for this physical-media check, not a remedy for a downloaded game, a system-wide freeze, or an overheating shutdown.

When overheating or an abrupt shutdown is part of the symptom

Do not diagnose overheating solely from one game crash. Use this branch when the PS5 displays an overheating warning, becomes abnormally hot and shuts down, or repeatedly powers off under load with clear heat-related signs.

  1. Turn the console off and allow it to cool completely before trying to play again.
  2. Move it to a well-ventilated location with open space around the intake and exhaust areas.
  3. Check that vents are not blocked by a wall, cabinet, fabric, dust buildup, or another device.
  4. After it has cooled and ventilation is corrected, test the same workload. Stop if the warning or shutdown returns.
  5. If the problem continues, use PlayStation Repairs or PlayStation Support rather than opening the console or attempting an unofficial cooling modification.

Heat guidance addresses a heat symptom; it does not establish that a normal crash was caused by temperature.

Decide when to escalate

Contact PlayStation Support or use PlayStation Repairs when the exact-code instructions and reasonable non-destructive checks do not resolve the problem, when several games and system features fail, when the console repeatedly shuts down, or when disc-reading trouble affects multiple known-good discs. Do not keep repeating a destructive reset without a current official reason.

Prepare a useful support report

  • The full error code and message, copied exactly.
  • The game or application name, edition, and whether it is digital or disc-based.
  • When the failure occurs: launch, loading, a particular level, online activity, an update, or an idle period.
  • Whether one title, multiple titles, or the entire console is affected.
  • Whether the game is installed on internal console storage, an M.2 SSD, or USB extended storage.
  • The PS5 system-software version and the game’s update status.
  • Every step already attempted and what happened afterward.
  • A screenshot or short video if the message, freeze, or shutdown can be captured safely.

This information lets support distinguish a reproducible title problem from a broader console symptom. Avoid claiming a warranty outcome or attempting an unauthorized repair; eligibility and service options depend on the current support process and region.

A practical decision rule

Use the least invasive branch that matches the evidence:

  • One game, no disc symptom, code shown: follow that code’s page first, then the game’s launch guidance.
  • One game on USB extended storage: move it to console or M.2 SSD storage before treating the console as defective.
  • Several games or applications: update system software, check storage behavior, and consider non-destructive Safe Mode maintenance.
  • Disc-only failure: clean the disc and test another disc before changing system data.
  • Overheating warning or heat-related shutdown: cool and ventilate the console, then escalate if it recurs.
  • Persistent failure after documented steps: provide the evidence list to PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs.

Menu names and recovery instructions can change as PlayStation system software evolves. Use the current instructions shown by PlayStation Support for your console and region, and treat any reset or reinstall as a data-loss operation that requires a backup whenever one is possible.
