A slow PS5 download is usually a network-path, PlayStation Network, storage, or single-update problem—not proof that the console is defective. Check PlayStation service status first, run the PS5 connection test, compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet, restart your modem/router for at least five minutes, and then investigate storage or update-specific errors. The result of those comparisons tells you whether to change your home network, wait for a service issue, or contact support.
Identify what is actually slow
Before changing settings, determine whether the slowdown affects the PS5 alone, every device in your home, or only one game or update. A PS5 connection test measures the console’s network path, but it does not guarantee that every PlayStation Network download will transfer at the same rate.

| What you observe | Most useful next check | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Phones, computers, and the PS5 are all slow | Test the router/ISP connection and restart network equipment | The bottleneck is probably your local network, internet service, or router. |
| Only the PS5 is slow on Wi‑Fi | Compare the console with an Ethernet connection or move it closer to the router | Wireless signal quality, interference, or placement is a likely factor. |
| Wi‑Fi is slow but Ethernet is better | Use the wired result as your diagnostic baseline | The console and service can transfer faster over your wired path; improve Wi‑Fi coverage if you need wireless play. |
| Only one game or update is affected | Restart the PS5, check system software, storage, and the game’s update status | This may be an update, installation, or title-specific problem rather than general internet speed. |
| The download is slow while PlayStation status shows an incident | Wait and recheck the official status page | A service-side event can affect downloads even when your home connection is healthy. |
Do not infer a PlayStation Network outage from one slow transfer. Use the comparisons below to isolate the changing variable. Also note whether the download is a new game, a patch, or system software: a single update can fail or pause for reasons that do not affect other titles.

- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Choose Connection Status, then Test Internet Connection.
- Note whether the console obtains an IP address, reaches the internet, and signs in to PlayStation Network.
Run the test when the download is slow, not hours later. Treat its displayed figures as clues about the PS5’s current route to the internet. A successful test does not mean a particular game server or content-delivery route will deliver at the same rate.
For a useful comparison, record the test result before and after each change. A result that improves while a download remains unchanged suggests the limiting factor may be the title’s update path or PlayStation Network rather than your home Wi‑Fi. Conversely, a failed sign-in or IP-address step points toward the local connection and should be resolved before judging download performance.
If the status page reports maintenance or an incident, avoid repeatedly changing router settings. Recheck after the service notice clears. If the status page is normal and other devices work normally, continue with the local comparisons.
2. Compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet
A wired comparison is the most informative reversible test for a PS5 that uses Wi‑Fi. PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible and, for wireless connections, suggests moving the console closer to the router and removing obstructions. These steps can reveal a wireless limitation; they do not guarantee a faster download or increase the speed purchased from your ISP.
Run a fair wired test
- Pause the current download if the game allows it, or note its progress and current transfer behavior.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the router with an Ethernet cable of appropriate category and length. A Cat 6 cable is an optional, commonly available way to perform this test; Cat 6 is not established as a requirement for PS5 downloads.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the wired connection, and complete the on-screen setup.
- Return to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- Retry or compare the download under similar conditions, preferably with other heavy network activity paused.
Compare like with like: use the same game or patch, test at roughly the same time, and allow the transfer enough time to show a consistent pattern rather than judging a single momentary number. If possible, make one change at a time. This avoids mistaking a temporary PlayStation Network fluctuation for an Ethernet improvement.
If Ethernet is clearly more stable or faster, the difference points to Wi‑Fi conditions between the console and router. You can keep the wired connection, reposition the router or console, or improve coverage. If Ethernet is no better, the cause is more likely the service route, ISP, router, storage, or the particular download.

- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
If you must stay on Wi‑Fi
- Move the PS5 closer to the router and keep the path as open as practical.
- Remove large objects and likely sources of interference from between the console and router.
- Retest after each physical change so you know which change affected the result.
Do not buy a cable, mesh system, or replacement router solely because a download is slow. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is useful when you need to perform the wired comparison, but the test—not the product label—shows whether Wi‑Fi is the limiting factor. A mesh system or replacement router should be considered only when these tests show a coverage or equipment problem. PlayStation’s support material does not establish a particular router model or a guaranteed speed improvement.

3. Restart the modem or router correctly
If the PS5 and other devices remain unstable, restart the network equipment before changing advanced settings. PlayStation’s troubleshooting instructions say to power off the router or modem, wait at least five minutes, and then restart it.
- Stop downloads that could be corrupted by a sudden network interruption.
- Turn off the router and, if separate, the modem or gateway according to the manufacturer’s normal power procedure.
- Leave the equipment off for at least five minutes.
- Turn the modem or gateway back on first, if your setup uses separate devices, and wait for it to regain its normal connection.
- Turn on the router and wait until its status lights indicate a ready connection.
- Reconnect the PS5 and run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection again.
Check the router maker’s or ISP’s documentation for firmware updates. Router menus and update procedures differ by model and provider, so do not apply generic instructions intended for a different device. If a firmware update is available, follow the vendor’s process and retest afterward.
Restarting is a diagnostic reset, not a promise of higher throughput. If every device becomes normal after the restart but the PS5 later slows again, record when the pattern returns and whether it affects Wi‑Fi only. Recurring problems are useful evidence for the ISP or network administrator.
4. Check storage and separate a slow transfer from an installation failure
A download can appear to stall when the PS5 is preparing, installing, or updating content. Check free space before deleting anything:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Review free space on the console storage and any installed USB or expansion storage.
Keep enough room for the game and its update. A storage warning, failed installation, or repeated error after the transfer finishes is a different problem from a consistently low network rate. Record the exact message or code rather than assuming the internet is at fault.

For a game or application update that is slow or unstable, PlayStation’s guidance includes testing the internet connection, restarting the console, and checking that system software is current. Use those steps before removing the game. If the progress indicator stops while storage activity continues, allow the process to finish instead of repeatedly canceling it; canceling and restarting can create another full transfer.
5. Troubleshoot one game or update that will not complete
Restart and update the PS5
- Press the PS button, open the power menu, and choose Restart PS5.
- After it restarts, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software if an update is offered, following the instructions on screen.
- Retry the affected game or application download.
PlayStation’s update guidance covers checking system and application versions. Keeping the console current can resolve an update incompatibility, but it does not promise a higher transfer rate for every download.
Recognize the slow-or-unstable update code
PlayStation Support lists error code NP-102947-3 as: “The internet connection is too slow or unstable to perform the update.” If that code appears, repeat the connection test, compare Ethernet with Wi‑Fi, and restart the router as described above. The PlayStation 5 error-code index also separates service, connection, storage, and download/install errors, so use the exact code to choose the branch instead of treating every failure as a speed issue.
Use reinstalling and Safe Mode only as later steps
If the connection is stable, storage is available, the system software is current, and the same game still cannot update, PlayStation recommends deleting and reinstalling the game or using Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database. These are later recovery steps because reinstalling removes the local game installation and requires downloading it again.
- Back up or verify any saves that are not already synchronized before removing a game.
- Use the PS5’s normal menus first; do not interrupt an active installation without a reason.
- Follow PlayStation’s on-screen Safe Mode instructions exactly, selecting the cache/database option appropriate to the problem.
Do not disconnect the PS5’s AC power cable while its power indicator is lit or blinking. PlayStation warns that doing so can cause data loss, corruption, or damage; see the power-saving and Rest Mode guidance for safe power procedures.
6. Use Rest Mode to continue downloads, not to make them faster
Rest Mode is useful when you want an eligible download to continue while you are away. It is not documented as a speed boost. PlayStation states: “While connected to the internet in rest mode, you can download games bought on PlayStation App and pre-ordered games to your console.”

Keep the PS5 connected in Rest Mode
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
You can also enable automatic downloads and installs for game and system software updates in the PS5’s update and power-saving settings. Availability depends on the download type and account or purchase state; Rest Mode does not change the capacity of your internet connection or guarantee a particular rate.

7. Choose the next step from the comparison that changed
| Comparison result | Likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 and all household devices are slow | ISP, modem, router, or wider service issue | Restart equipment, check firmware instructions, and contact the ISP or network administrator if the problem persists. |
| Only Wi‑Fi is slow; Ethernet improves the result | Wireless coverage or interference | Use Ethernet where practical or reposition/improve the wireless network; retest after each change. |
| Ethernet and Wi‑Fi are both slow, but status is normal | ISP route, router condition, or PlayStation download path | Test other devices, note times and error codes, and escalate to the ISP or PlayStation Support based on which services are affected. |
| Only one title or update fails | Game update, system software, storage, or installation state | Restart, update the PS5, check storage, then consider reinstalling or Safe Mode recovery. |
| Storage error appears after transfer | Insufficient or problematic storage | Free the required space and retry; preserve saves before deleting content. |
| PlayStation status reports an incident | PlayStation Network service | Wait for the incident to clear and recheck rather than repeatedly changing local settings. |
Use the branch that changes the result, not the branch that sounds most familiar. For example, if a second game downloads normally on the same Ethernet connection, concentrate on the first title’s update or installation state. If both games and other devices are slow, a title-specific reinstall is unlikely to address the underlying problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Know when to contact support
Contact your ISP or network administrator when
- Multiple devices are slow or unstable at the same time.
- The PS5 remains slow over Ethernet after a proper modem/router restart.
- Your router reports a line, authentication, or firmware problem.
Have the time of the slowdown, whether Wi‑Fi or Ethernet was used, the connection-test result, and any router error information ready. Explain whether restarting helped temporarily and whether the problem affects all downloads or only PlayStation traffic.
Contact PlayStation Support when
- Other devices and internet services work normally, but PS5 downloads remain affected on both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet.
- The official status page is normal and the problem persists across more than one game or update.
- The console shows a specific error code, especially after you have checked storage, restarted, and confirmed current system software.
Provide the exact code and wording. PlayStation’s error index distinguishes connection, service, storage, and download/install failures, which helps support route the issue correctly.

There is no official universal PS5 download-speed target or guaranteed percentage improvement from a cable, router restart, or Rest Mode. A successful diagnosis is instead a repeatable change: Ethernet consistently outperforms Wi‑Fi, restarting the router restores stability, a service incident clears, or correcting storage and system software lets the affected update complete. Keep the setting that solved your specific branch and avoid deeper recovery steps when the connection test and downloads are already behaving normally.
