Then inspect both the submitted image_link and the image it serves. Correct the URL, file format, access permissions, dimensions, quality, relevance, or overlays identified by the label, save the product or reupload corrected feed data, and allow time for Google to process the change.
Many corrected issues can take 24–72 hours to disappear from Needs attention. If you replace the file but keep the same image URL, Google says discovering the new content can take up to six weeks, so a changed filename and URL is usually the faster route.

Start with the exact issue in Needs attention
Do not replace images at random. Merchant Center’s issue label tells you which part of the image submission failed and determines the most efficient repair.
- Sign in to Google Merchant Center.
- Open Products, then Needs attention.
- Apply the Image filter.
- Open an affected product to see its issue label and details.
- For catalog-wide work, download the affected-product CSV so you can match each problem to the product data that created it.
| Issue label | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Broken image link | Whether the URL returns a usable image and remains reachable to Google. |
| Missing product image | Whether image_link is populated and points to the intended main image. |
| Invalid image link | Whether the address is complete, correctly encoded, and a direct image URL rather than a page or script. |
| Invalid image format | Whether the file’s encoding, extension, and response match an accepted format. |
| Image too small | Whether the pixel dimensions meet the applicable threshold for the product category and current policy date. |
| Low image quality | Whether the image is blurry, pixelated, artificially enlarged, or framed with too little product. |
| Text on image | Whether promotional copy, watermarks, prices, badges, or other added graphics are covering the product image. |
Use the label as a diagnosis, not as a general warning. A product can have more than one image problem; resolve every listed issue before requesting another review.

Check that image_link is a real, reachable image
The main image URL must be complete and begin with http:// or https://. It should lead directly to the image asset, not to a product page, an HTML error page, a login screen, or a script that only creates an image after a session is established.
Test access outside your store session
Open the URL in a private browser window or use an HTTP inspection tool from outside your logged-in storefront. Confirm that the response is successful and that the returned content is an image. A URL that works for you while your browser carries a cookie can still fail for Google’s crawler.
- Look for a 404 or other error response.
- Check whether redirects eventually reach a stable image file.
- Remove session-dependent or expiring query links.
- Encode spaces and other special characters correctly.
- Check for malformed characters introduced when a feed exported the URL.
- Ensure the server does not require a password, a customer account, or a store-specific token.
Google’s image-link guidance says robots.txt must permit both Googlebot and Googlebot-image to fetch the asset. Review firewall, CDN, hotlink-protection, and rate-limit rules if ordinary visitors can see the image but crawlers cannot. Image URLs routed through ASP, PHP, or ColdFusion scripts can also fail to fetch; serving a stable image asset directly is safer.
Use a stable URL strategy
Keep an image URL permanent while the image content remains the same. If the asset itself changes, use a new filename and URL when possible. Google says that replacing the image under an unchanged URL can take up to six weeks to detect and recrawl. A new URL gives the crawler a clear signal that it needs to fetch a new resource, although normal feed and policy processing still applies.
Validate the file, extension, and server response
Merchant Center’s image-link guidance accepts JPEG, WebP, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF. The filename extension should describe the actual encoded format. For example, a file encoded as PNG should not be named with a JPEG extension, and a URL ending in an image extension must not return HTML or a redirect to a product page.
File checks
- Open the downloaded asset in an image viewer to verify that it is not corrupt.
- Check the file’s actual encoding with your image editor or operating-system metadata, not just the filename.
- Make sure the server sends an image content type and the complete file, rather than a truncated response.
- Keep the file at or below Google’s stated maximum of 64 megapixels and 16 MB.
- Remove password protection, expiring signatures, and access rules that block automated retrieval.
If the URL is generated by a content-management system, inspect the final URL written into the feed rather than the URL shown in an admin preview. A feed can contain an old path, an internal hostname, or an unencoded space even when the product editor displays a correct-looking image.

Make the main image show the product being sold
The primary image must clearly depict the actual product and variant in the offer. It cannot be a generic substitute that merely resembles the item.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Replace placeholders and unrelated assets
Do not submit a “Coming soon” graphic, “No image available” tile, store logo, stock icon, or an unrelated product as the main image. Match the image to the exact submitted item, including color, model, pack count, size, and other variant attributes. If the feed describes a red two-pack, the image should show that red two-pack rather than a single unit or a different color.
Use additional_image_link for extra angles, detail views, packaging, or lifestyle views. Keep the main image focused on the product that the shopper is buying.
Remove added promotional material
Post-production additions that advertise or annotate the offer can trigger a disapproval. Remove:
- Calls to action such as “Buy now” or “Shop today.”
- Prices, discount percentages, sale badges, shipping promises, and financing text.
- Extended-warranty claims and promotional adjectives.
- Condition, compatibility, or availability labels added over the photo.
- Extra barcodes, QR codes, retailer names, or manufacturer names placed on top of the image.
- Watermarks, borders, decorative badges, and other retailer overlays.
A logo that is physically printed on the product is part of the product and is different from a logo added over the photograph. Do not digitally erase branding that is actually on the item; remove only the overlay introduced during image production.

Consider automatic image improvements carefully
Merchant Center can be set to apply automatic image improvements for some minor image-policy problems, including certain promotional overlays. If you enable that setting, inspect the resulting image and confirm that the automatic edit has not removed an important product detail or changed the variant. Automatic improvement is not a substitute for replacing a wrong, missing, inaccessible, or low-resolution source file.

Meet the correct size and quality requirement for the date
Google’s thresholds are in transition, so do not treat every number as the same rule.
| Guidance | Value and timing | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Current issue-page minimum | 100 × 100 pixels for non-apparel; 250 × 250 pixels for apparel. | Images below the applicable minimum can be rejected as too small. |
| Warnings for the upcoming threshold | Warnings for images below 500 × 500 began in July 2026. | An image can meet the older minimum and still receive a warning. |
| Announced future enforcement | 500 × 500 pixels for all products, enforced beginning January 31, 2027. | Plan catalog replacements before that date rather than waiting for enforcement. |
| Performance recommendation | Around 1500 × 1500 pixels or above. | Use a large, clean source for listing formats and future resizing. |
| Technical maximums | 64 megapixels and 16 MB. | Reduce dimensions or compression if the file exceeds either limit. |
The numbers above come from Google Merchant Center Help pages accessed in 2026. The issue-page minima, warning period, future enforcement date, and performance recommendation are different kinds of guidance; meeting one does not automatically satisfy the others.
Fix blur, pixelation, and poor framing
Replace thumbnails and visibly soft exports with a native, high-resolution image. Do not enlarge a small image artificially and expect the added pixels to restore detail. Google’s low-quality guidance also recommends that the product occupy roughly 75–90% of the image area. Crop excessive empty space while keeping the entire product visible and avoiding accidental clipping.

Fix one product in Merchant Center
Use the single-item path when only a few offers are affected or when you need to test a correction before changing a feed.
- Open Products → Needs attention and select the affected offer.
- Read the complete image issue and note whether it concerns the URL, file, content, size, or quality.
- Replace the image asset or edit the image URL in the product data source that controls the offer.
- If the image content changed, use a new filename and URL where practical.
- Save the product or submit the edited data through the existing source.
- Confirm that the saved product still has the correct variant, price, availability, and destination data; changing an image should not silently change those fields.
Editing the product display in your ecommerce platform is not enough if Merchant Center receives data from a scheduled feed or API. Make the correction in the controlling source, otherwise the next update can restore the rejected URL.

Fix a group of products through the feed
Bulk work is safer when you preserve a clear mapping between each issue and its product identifier.
- From Needs attention, download the affected-product CSV.
- Group the rows by issue label and identify the feed, API source, or platform that supplied them.
- Match each row using the product ID, SKU, or other stable identifier.
- Correct the
image_linkvalues, replace the underlying assets, or both. - Check that every new URL is unique where an image changed, publicly reachable, and paired with the correct variant.
- Reupload the corrected file using the same data-source method, or publish the changes through the API or ecommerce platform that owns the feed.
- Keep a copy of the corrected CSV and the old-to-new URL mapping so you can identify any products that fail again.
Do not paste one generic replacement image across unrelated products simply to clear a count. Google evaluates whether the image represents each submitted offer, and a bulk correction that fixes access but breaks relevance can create a second policy problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Allow time for processing and recrawling
After a correction is saved, Google says changes may take 24–72 hours to appear on the Needs attention page. That is a processing estimate, not a guarantee that every impression, listing, or destination will update at exactly the same time.
The longer delay applies when the file content changes but its URL does not. Google’s broken-link guidance says discovering and crawling that replacement can take up to six weeks. During that interval, keep the old URL available if it still returns a valid image, and avoid repeatedly changing the same URL unless there is a real correction; frequent edits make it harder to tell which asset Google has fetched.
Request a review when the issue remains
If the corrected offer is still disapproved, first reopen its issue details and verify that the live URL, file, dimensions, and policy content all match the fix. Then use the account’s review option when it is offered. Google says reviews are available in some cases when a merchant has fixed the problem or believes the issue is incorrect.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Review limits can apply, and the account displays the limits that govern that case. Do not submit repeated reviews while the image still returns an error or contains the flagged overlay; a review is most useful after the underlying evidence has changed.
Best Value
If no review control appears, continue troubleshooting the source data and follow the support path shown in Merchant Center. The absence of a button does not prove that the image is compliant; it can reflect the issue type, account state, or a platform-managed workflow.
Account for ecommerce-platform control
Some merchants edit products in a third-party ecommerce platform whose connector, scheduled feed, or API controls Merchant Center data. In that setup, a manual change in Merchant Center may be overwritten at the next synchronization.
- Find the source named on the affected product or data-source settings.
- Change the image URL and asset in that source.
- Check the connector’s image transformation, CDN, and caching settings.
- Wait for the next fetch, then verify the final URL in Merchant Center.
Google notes that some of its instructions may not apply when a platform controls the feed, and the platform may manage its own support and review process. Keep Merchant Center as the place where you confirm the resulting issue status, but repair the data wherever it originates.
Use this troubleshooting sequence when the disapproval returns
- URL works in a browser but not for Google: check robots.txt, authentication, firewall rules, hotlink protection, redirects, and expiring tokens.
- The URL is valid but the format is rejected: compare the encoded file type with its extension and verify that the response is an image rather than HTML.
- The image is accepted but marked irrelevant: compare the pictured model, color, quantity, and size with the submitted variant; remove generic placeholders.
- Text-on-image returns after replacement: inspect the original export for hidden layers, watermarks, badges, QR codes, and retailer overlays.
- The file meets the old minimum but shows a warning: upgrade it toward 500 × 500 or larger before January 31, 2027, and use about 1500 × 1500 or above when practical.
- A corrected URL keeps showing the old image: confirm that the feed actually contains the new URL and that the old CDN response is not being served from cache.
- The issue reappears after a feed run: locate the controlling source and correct it there instead of only editing the Merchant Center copy.
Prevent future image disapprovals
Build the checks into the image and feed workflow before publishing a new product.
- Require a complete, stable HTTPS image URL in every product record.
- Test the URL without an authenticated storefront session.
- Check that Googlebot and Googlebot-image are not blocked.
- Validate encoding, extension, response type, dimensions, megapixels, and file size automatically.
- Use a product-specific main image and place alternate views in
additional_image_link. - Reject overlays containing prices, promotions, calls to action, shipping claims, watermarks, QR codes, or added logos.
- Keep the product at roughly 75–90% of the canvas and avoid thumbnails or artificial upscaling.
- Track the announced 500 × 500 enforcement date and upgrade smaller catalog images ahead of time.
- When the image content changes, publish a new filename and URL and retain the old asset long enough for normal processing.
- Record which feed or platform owns each image URL so a later synchronization does not undo the fix.
A practical completion checklist
Before you consider an image disapproval fixed, verify all of the following for the affected offer:
Quick Recap
- The issue label in Needs attention has been identified.
image_linkcontains a complete URL that returns the intended image to an unauthenticated crawler.- The URL, extension, encoding, and response agree.
- The file is one of Google’s accepted formats and stays within 64 megapixels and 16 MB.
- The image shows the exact product and variant, not a placeholder or unrelated item.
- No added promotional text, watermark, badge, code, or retailer overlay remains.
- Dimensions and visual quality meet the applicable threshold and are large enough for the planned listing format.
- The correction was made in the feed or platform that actually controls the product data.
- You have allowed normal processing time before escalating.
