Most Pokémon transfer failures have a specific cause: the wrong migration route, an incompatible destination, mismatched Nintendo accounts, missing save data on the console running Pokémon HOME, or a move that is intentionally one-way. Identify the exact source and destination first, then use the route designed for that platform.
Nintendo 3DS games go through Pokémon Bank, while supported Nintendo Switch games connect directly to Pokémon HOME. Before confirming any move, check the Pokémon’s current “Games it can travel to” list and read the exact error message. These checks prevent you from troubleshooting a route that the Pokémon or account cannot use.

Start by mapping the transfer you are trying to make
Write down four details before changing settings:
- The exact source game and destination game.
- Whether the source is a Nintendo 3DS title, a Nintendo Switch title, or Pokémon GO.
- Whether you are using Pokémon HOME on a Switch, Switch 2, or a mobile device, and whether a 3DS is available.
- The complete error text, including punctuation if possible.
Pokémon HOME does not create a universal path between every game. Its supported connections and the Pokémon’s own compatibility determine what can move. The official overview of supported connections is in Pokémon Support’s guide to connecting HOME to different games.

Choose the route by source platform
| Source | Bridge and app | Premium requirement | How Pokémon are selected | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS Pokémon title | Pokémon Bank, then Pokémon HOME | HOME Premium is required for a Bank-to-HOME move | With a 3DS, select boxes in Bank; without a 3DS, the no-3DS flow moves all Pokémon in Bank together | After Bank Pokémon enter HOME, they cannot return to Bank |
| Supported Nintendo Switch title | Pokémon HOME on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 | Pokémon Support does not require Nintendo Switch Online for HOME functions | Select the connected game and user save data, then move eligible Pokémon between game and HOME boxes | Only Pokémon marked as eligible for that destination can move |
This table describes the two routes covered here. A title not covered by the applicable HOME connection screen may require a different official process or may not support the move you want.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Check compatibility before changing accounts or reinstalling anything
Species compatibility is the quickest explanation for many apparent transfer bugs. A Pokémon can be perfectly valid in its source game and still be blocked from a particular destination. Compatibility is checked per Pokémon, so one successful transfer does not prove that another Pokémon can follow it.
Check on the mobile HOME app
- Open the Pokémon’s details in the mobile version of Pokémon HOME.
- Find “Games it can travel to.”
- Use the displayed list as the current destination authority. If the destination is absent, do not keep retrying the transfer; that route is not available for that Pokémon.
The official explanation of this screen is Pokémon Support’s compatibility article.
Check on Nintendo Switch HOME
- Open Pokémon HOME on the Switch or Switch 2.
- Select the Pokémon and open its summary.
- Press + to open “Connected Games.”
- Look for the target game. Pokémon Support states: “If a game image is grayed out, that Pokémon cannot be used in that game.”
A gray icon is a compatibility restriction, not a network failure. Do not delete save data or unlink accounts to solve it.
Moving Pokémon from a Nintendo 3DS game through Pokémon Bank
Nintendo 3DS titles use Pokémon Bank as the bridge to HOME. Pokémon HOME Premium is required for this Bank-to-HOME transfer. The official procedure and its irreversible consequence are documented in Pokémon Support’s Bank transfer article.
If you still have the 3DS
- Confirm that the Pokémon are in Pokémon Bank and that the Nintendo 3DS is connected to the Bank account you intend to use.
- Open Pokémon HOME and start the option to move Pokémon from Pokémon Bank. HOME displays a temporary Moving Key.
- Switch to Pokémon Bank on the 3DS and enter that key when prompted.
- Enter it within three minutes. The key expires after that period, so generate a new key if the timer runs out.
- Complete the move and wait for HOME to show the Pokémon. The published instructions note that Moving Keys do not contain the letters O, I, or Z; check similar-looking characters carefully when typing.
With this route, you can select the boxes to send from Bank. Review the selection and the destination compatibility in HOME before confirming.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
If you no longer have a 3DS
- Use the no-3DS Bank transfer option in Pokémon HOME.
- Link the Nintendo Network ID used with Pokémon Bank to the Nintendo Account used with Pokémon HOME.
- Verify the IDs before starting the move. Pokémon Support’s no-3DS path moves all Pokémon in Bank together rather than letting you choose individual boxes.
- Start the transfer only after confirming that you accept the one-way result described below.
If the Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account do not correspond as required, HOME cannot identify the Bank collection for this route. Do not create a second HOME account as a trial; first verify which Nintendo Account is connected to the mobile and Switch versions.
Understand the irreversible Bank step
Bank-to-HOME is not a reversible backup. Pokémon Support says: “However, once a Pokémon from Pokémon Bank is moved into Pokémon HOME, it cannot be moved back to Pokémon Bank afterward.” Treat the confirmation as a migration, not a temporary loan. If you need a Pokémon to remain available in its 3DS game or Bank, leave it there until you are certain.
Moving Pokémon between Pokémon HOME and supported Switch games
For a supported Nintendo Switch title, use the Nintendo Switch version of HOME rather than trying to route the game through Bank.
- Install or open Pokémon HOME on the Switch or Switch 2 and sign in to the Nintendo Account that owns the intended HOME account.
- Choose the connected game from the HOME game-selection screen.
- Select the user profile whose save data contains the Pokémon. HOME can only work with the save data it can see for that user on the console.
- Open the game’s boxes and HOME’s boxes, then move only Pokémon that the interface marks as eligible.
- Review each Pokémon’s summary and destination compatibility before saving the box changes.
Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for Pokémon HOME functions according to Pokémon Support. That requirement should not be confused with the separate HOME Premium requirement for moving Pokémon from Bank.
Why a Switch transfer may appear to work in one direction only
HOME enforces game-specific rules. A Pokémon can be eligible to enter a Switch game but not eligible to return to an earlier title, or it can be blocked from entering a title altogether. The Connected Games screen is the controlling check for that individual Pokémon; do not infer reversibility from the fact that the first move succeeded.
Rank #3
- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
Important one-way and return restrictions
Plan the complete chain before confirming a move. HOME is storage and a transfer hub, but it is not a universally reversible shuttle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBank to HOME
Every Pokémon moved from Pokémon Bank into HOME is barred from returning to Bank. Keep a copy in Bank only by not starting the migration for that Pokémon; there is no supported undo after completion.
Let’s Go to HOME and back
Pokémon from Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee! can return from HOME to the Let’s Go game only if they have not been moved from HOME into Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield. The specific return rule is described in Pokémon Support’s Let’s Go and HOME FAQ.
Therefore, if a Let’s Go return matters, do not move that Pokémon from HOME into Sword or Shield first. Check its Connected Games list before accepting any intermediate move.
Fix account-linking and “already linked” errors
Account errors require a different remedy from compatibility errors. The exact message covered by Pokémon Support is “This account has already been linked to a different Pokémon HOME.” Follow the support-specific procedure only for that message.

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Confirm the Nintendo Account used by the Switch version of Pokémon HOME.
- Delete the mobile Pokémon HOME app.
- Reinstall the mobile app and complete its first-time setup.
- When prompted, link the same Nintendo Account used with the Switch version.
- Sign in and check that the expected HOME boxes and account data appear.
The complete instructions are in Pokémon Support’s article for the “already been linked” error.
Read the data-loss warning before reinstalling
Deleting and reinstalling the mobile app affects locally stored data and history as described by the support page. Know the correct Nintendo Account before removing the app. If HOME Premium has been purchased and/or the mobile and Switch versions have synchronized, Pokémon Support says the Nintendo Account linked to that HOME account cannot be changed; using a different account requires a new HOME account on a new device. Reinstalling is not a way to merge two HOME accounts.
Do not apply this fix to every error
The reinstall-and-relink steps are tied to the exact “already been linked” message. For a different message, first check the route, compatibility screen, account, save-data location, and any instructions attached to that particular error. Repeating an unrelated fix can remove local information without addressing the actual cause.
Fix HOME connections after moving to Nintendo Switch 2
On Nintendo Switch 2, the game save data must be present on the same console where you launch Pokémon HOME. Pokémon Support explains this requirement in its Nintendo Switch 2 HOME FAQ.
- On the Switch 2, confirm that the relevant game is installed or available and that its save data is stored on that console.
- Check that the game and HOME use the same Nintendo Account and the intended user profile.
- If the save remains on the previous console, use Nintendo’s system-data transfer process to move the system data, including save data, with the same Nintendo Account.
- Launch HOME again on the console now containing the save and select the game and user.
- Recheck the Pokémon’s Connected Games eligibility before moving anything.
A console change cannot override a species restriction or an irreversible migration rule. It only makes the relevant save visible to HOME.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Diagnose the common failure patterns
The destination game is gray or missing
- Open the Pokémon’s “Games it can travel to” list in mobile HOME or “Connected Games” on Switch.
- If the destination is gray or absent, stop: that Pokémon is not eligible for that game.
- Try a different Pokémon only as a diagnostic. A successful second transfer does not change the first Pokémon’s restriction.
HOME cannot find the 3DS collection
- Confirm that the source is a Nintendo 3DS title and that you are using Pokémon Bank as the bridge.
- Check that HOME Premium is active for the Bank-to-HOME route.
- For the no-3DS path, verify that the Bank Nintendo Network ID is linked to the Nintendo Account used by HOME.
- If you have a 3DS, use the Moving Key flow instead and enter the key before its three-minute expiration.
The Moving Key fails
- Generate a new key if more than three minutes have passed.
- Enter the characters exactly; the key never uses O, I, or Z.
- Make sure the key is entered in Pokémon Bank, not in a different HOME screen.
- If the new key still fails, stop repeated attempts and verify that the Bank and HOME accounts are the intended ones.
A Switch game is not listed in HOME
- Launch HOME on the same console that contains the game’s save data.
- On Switch 2, move the relevant system and save data to that console if it remains elsewhere.
- Select the correct user profile when HOME asks which save data to open.
- Confirm that the title is a supported HOME connection and that the Pokémon is eligible for it.
The mobile app reports an account-link problem
- Compare the Nintendo Account shown in the mobile setup with the account used by the Switch version.
- For the exact “already been linked” wording, use the official reinstall and relink steps.
- Before deleting the app, read the support warning about local data and account changes.
- Do not unlink a synchronized HOME account casually; support says the linked account may not be changeable in that situation.
The Pokémon moved, but cannot go back
- Check whether it came from Bank; Bank-to-HOME moves cannot be reversed.
- Check whether it came from Let’s Go and was later moved into Sword or Shield; that sequence blocks a return to Let’s Go.
- For any other route, inspect the current Connected Games list rather than assuming the previous source remains available.
A safe pre-transfer checklist
- Record the source game, target game, console, user profile, and exact error.
- Check the Pokémon’s destination list before troubleshooting accounts.
- Confirm whether the route is 3DS-to-Bank-to-HOME or Switch-to/from-HOME.
- Confirm HOME Premium when moving from Bank.
- Verify the Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo Account pairing for a no-3DS Bank move.
- On Switch 2, confirm that the game save is on the same console as HOME.
- Read the return restrictions for Bank and Let’s Go.
- Only then confirm the move, knowing whether it moves selected boxes or the entire Bank collection.
When buying hardware will not solve the problem
A compatible Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 is necessary for the Switch version of HOME and supported Switch games, and a 3DS is useful for the box-selection Moving Key route. Hardware cannot make an incompatible species legal, repair mismatched account links, relocate save data automatically, or reverse a completed Bank migration. If your only problem is a gray destination icon or a one-way rule, purchasing a console or game will not change that restriction.
Use official support for the exact message
Transfer behavior changes by source title, destination title, account state, and HOME version. The most reliable next step is the official support page matching your route and error:
- About connecting Pokémon HOME to different games for route availability.
- How to tell which Pokémon can transfer for destination eligibility.
- 3DS titles and Pokémon Bank for Premium, Moving Keys, no-3DS transfers, and the no-return rule.
- Let’s Go return restrictions for moves involving Sword or Shield.
- Pokémon HOME on Nintendo Switch 2 FAQs for save-data placement.
- The “already been linked” error steps for the specific mobile-account message.
