If plugins disappeared from your WordPress dashboard, first identify what is missing: the Plugins menu, plugin rows on the Installed Plugins page, or access to the page itself. Those symptoms have different causes. Check whether you are in the right site and admin area, then inspect permissions or plugin files before trying recovery steps that deactivate plugins.
First identify what disappeared
Before changing settings or files, note exactly what you see and what changed shortly before the problem began. WordPress’s plugin management documentation covers the Installed Plugins screen and plugin-specific troubleshooting.
- The Plugins menu is missing: check your account permissions and, if this is a multisite installation, whether you are in the right administration area.
- The menu is present, but you can’t see your installed plugins: verify that you are viewing the correct site and check its plugin folders.
- One plugin is missing: look for that plugin’s folder in the site’s plugin directory and review its update or restore history.
- The Plugins page will not open or shows an error: record the exact error and consider whether a recent plugin change could be involved.
Keep a note of the WordPress version, whether the site is single-site or multisite, how it is hosted, and recent updates or file changes. That information helps distinguish a visibility issue from a missing file or a conflict.
If the Plugins menu is missing
Confirm your role and admin area
Ask the site owner to confirm your assigned role and whether your account has permission to manage plugins. A WordPress.org support reply about a missing Plugins option lists insufficient administrator permissions or broken permissions as possible explanations; treat these as things to check, not a definitive diagnosis.

On a multisite network, plugin management may be available in Network Admin rather than the dashboard for an individual site. Open the network administration area and check its Plugins screen. WordPress core’s plugin-list logic also distinguishes network plugin management from site-level visibility, so the two lists need not show identical controls or entries. The exact interface depends on the site’s configuration and WordPress version. See the WordPress plugin list table code for that distinction.
If plugin entries are missing from Installed Plugins
Verify the site and installation
First make sure you are signed into the correct site and admin account. A hosting account may contain multiple WordPress installations, each with its own plugin directory. In your host’s file manager or through FTP/SFTP, inspect wp-content/plugins in the document root for the specific site whose dashboard you are checking.

If the expected plugin folder is absent or damaged, restore it from a known-good backup or obtain a fresh copy from the plugin’s official source. Install it through the dashboard or use WordPress’s documented manual installation method. A similarly named folder alone does not establish that it is the genuine plugin; use the plugin’s own documentation for its correct source and installation guidance.
Do not assume an update caused it
If you first noticed the problem after an update, use the timing as a clue and check the update history, filesystem and logs. A WordPress.org forum thread about a report after WordPress 6.8.2 records one user’s experience and suggested causes; it does not establish that a WordPress core update generally removes plugins.

If the Plugins page errors or the dashboard is inaccessible
If you suspect a plugin conflict, WordPress Learn documents using FTP or a file manager to rename a plugin folder so WordPress deactivates that plugin. This is most useful when you have a reasonable suspect, such as a plugin changed just before the error. - Use your host’s file manager or FTP/SFTP to open the correct site’s
wp-content/pluginsdirectory. - Rename the suspected plugin’s folder, for example by adding
-disabledto its name. WordPress should deactivate it because the expected folder is no longer present. - Try opening the dashboard again. If it loads, return to Installed Plugins and reactivate plugins individually, checking the site after each activation.
- If the issue returns when a plugin is reactivated, rename that plugin folder again to disable it. Then consult the plugin’s documentation or support resources.
Reactivating a problematic plugin can make the dashboard inaccessible again, so test cautiously and be ready to rename its folder another time.

Choose a recovery method that matches the situation
If you cannot identify a suspect, WordPress.org documents a broader option: temporarily rename the entire plugins directory. This affects every plugin, not just one, and site features that depend on plugins may stop working until they are restored.

Rename the full directory only when necessary
To use the directory method, open the correct site’s wp-content directory in a file manager or FTP/SFTP client and rename plugins temporarily. Log in to WordPress so it can deactivate the plugins whose files are unavailable, then rename the directory back to plugins. Reactivate plugins individually and check the site as you go. Leave database changes to someone qualified
Changing active_plugins in phpMyAdmin is not the default choice for a general user. Before any database change, confirm that you have a restorable backup. If you are unfamiliar with phpMyAdmin or your database tables, ask your host or a qualified WordPress administrator to help.
Use logs and plugin support to find the cause
Once you can access the dashboard, check the error message, the relevant plugin documentation and the plugin author’s support resources. WordPress Learn’s troubleshooting guide discusses enabling debug logging and checking wp-content/debug.log. Avoid posting credentials or other sensitive site information in public support requests.
If file access is unavailable or you are unsure which installation you are changing, contact your hosting provider for help with the correct document root and recovery options. If a particular plugin is implicated, consult that plugin’s own documentation or support channel.
