If Photoshop 2026 crashes your entire Windows PC when you choose Select > Subject, first try switching the Select Subject and Remove Background processing option to Cloud, if it is available. One Adobe Community user reported that this stopped the crashes on their computer, but it is not a confirmed fix for everyone. If it does not help, test whether Photoshop’s GPU path is involved, then check your software and driver versions before considering more disruptive steps.
What the “nviddmkm” report does—and does not—establish
An Adobe Community post dated July 4, 2026, describes Photoshop 2026 crashing the whole Windows PC intermittently after the user ran Select > Subject. The user reported a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION stop code and the failed-module string nviddmkm.sys, and said switching Select Subject and Remove Background processing to Cloud prevented the problem for them. The report is one user’s account, not confirmation of a general Photoshop defect, a proven NVIDIA driver fault, or a universal workaround. Read the Adobe Community thread.

A full-machine blue screen or restart is different from Photoshop simply closing. Adobe Community Manager Sameer K replied to the thread on July 20, 2026, suggesting broader diagnosis and requesting crash information; the reply did not identify a root cause or confirm a product fix. Adobe’s general guidance is to test whether the graphics adapter or its driver is involved before drawing conclusions from the trigger or error string.

Before changing settings, note the details that will help distinguish a Photoshop-only crash from a Windows stop error and make later support requests useful:

- Photoshop’s full version number and Windows version/build.
- Your GPU model and installed graphics-driver version.
- Whether only Photoshop exits or the whole PC blue-screens, freezes, or restarts.
- The exact stop code and failed-module text as Windows displays them.
- Whether the crash happens every time or intermittently, and whether it occurs with a particular image.
The release notes retrieved for this guidance identify Photoshop 2026 desktop as version 27.0 and Photoshop 2025 LTS as 26.11.1. Adobe says Photoshop 27.0 no longer supports Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 21H2, so check your installed version and Windows build rather than assuming all “Windows 11” systems meet the same requirements. Try the reported Cloud-processing workaround
- In Photoshop, open Image Processing settings.
- Find Select Subject and Remove Background processing and choose Cloud, if that option is available in your installation.
- Repeat the same Select Subject task, preferably with a comparable image, and note whether the whole-PC crash recurs.
This is the workaround the Adobe Community poster said helped on their computer. Adobe’s thread does not establish Cloud processing as a generally verified solution; if the setting is missing or the crash continues, proceed with diagnosis rather than treating the report as a guaranteed fix.

Test whether Photoshop’s GPU path is involved
- In Photoshop, go to Preferences > Performance.
- Turn off Use Graphics Processor, then restart Photoshop.
- Repeat the same selection task and compare the result with your earlier test.
Adobe describes disabling Use Graphics Processor and restarting as a quick way to test whether the video adapter or driver may be involved. If the crash stops with GPU processing off, that points toward the graphics path; it does not prove that a particular driver, GPU component, or hardware part is defective. Turning off GPU acceleration can affect functions that require it. Adobe identifies Oil Paint, Perspective Warp, Smooth Brush Resizing, and some 3D functionality among GPU-dependent features. Treat this setting as a diagnostic test, not necessarily a suitable permanent configuration. Adobe also documents testing advanced GPU settings such as OpenCL and GPU Compositing; change those only as targeted tests, one at a time, so you can tell which change affects the symptom. Update or test a different graphics driver
Install available Photoshop and Windows updates, then get the graphics driver directly from the GPU manufacturer. Restart and repeat the selection test. Adobe does not promise that installing the newest driver will resolve every crash; if an updated driver does not help, Adobe says to try a slightly older stable version. Change one thing at a time and keep the version numbers you recorded. That makes it easier to identify whether an update or rollback changed the behavior, rather than leaving several simultaneous changes with no clear result.
Check Photoshop preferences and optional plugins
If Cloud processing and the GPU test do not resolve the issue, Adobe’s stability guidance recommends testing other common Photoshop causes. Resetting preferences restores defaults, so record any custom settings you may need before doing it. You can also launch Photoshop while holding Shift to skip optional and third-party plugins, then retry Select Subject. Test after each step instead of combining changes. When to contact Adobe—and what to send
If the entire PC continues to crash, collect Photoshop’s Help > System Info and provide it with your recorded Photoshop version, Windows build, GPU and driver versions, exact stop code, and a clear description of whether Windows blue-screens or only Photoshop exits. Adobe’s stability guidance recommends collecting System Info if the issue remains; the Community reply also requested crash-report submission. Adobe crash and freeze guidance. Do not confuse this with an older Select Subject issue
Adobe’s known-issues page includes a resolved Select Subject or Object Selection crash associated with Photoshop 25.0 on Windows and Mac, with advice to update the NVIDIA driver. That older entry does not establish that the July 2026 Photoshop 2026 report has the same cause or remedy. Adobe Photoshop known issues.
The available Adobe release notes and known-issues information do not establish whether Adobe later acknowledged or fixed the specific July 2026 report. The error string alone is not evidence that the GPU hardware needs replacement; start with reversible software and driver tests.
