How to Fix Phone Hub Not Connecting Between a Pixel and Chromebook

Set up a Pixel through the Chromebook’s Settings > Connected devices > Android phone > Set up flow—not through Bluetooth’s “pair new device” list. Then verify that both devices use the same Google Account, update Android and Google Play Services, remove any old direct Bluetooth pairing, refresh Bluetooth, and restart the Chromebook. If only app streaming fails, check its stricter software, proximity, and Wi-Fi requirements. Work or school management can also block Phone Hub.

Understand what is—and is not—being connected

Phone Hub is the Chromebook feature that links selected Android-phone functions, such as notifications, battery information, hotspot controls and, on supported devices, app streaming. The Pixel is selected as a phone in ChromeOS settings; it is not added as a normal Bluetooth accessory.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Google’s Chromebook Bluetooth guidance is explicit: “Important: Your phone can’t pair to your Chromebook with Bluetooth.” Bluetooth must be switched on because Phone Hub uses it during setup, but the setup itself belongs in the Android-phone section of Connected devices. See Google’s Bluetooth-device instructions and Phone Hub setup instructions.

There are three different situations that are often described as “Phone Hub not connecting”:

Situation What it requires Where to troubleshoot
Initial or basic Phone Hub connection Phone Hub setup in Connected devices, Bluetooth enabled, same Google Account and supported software Follow the setup and pairing-state steps below
Changing from an old phone to a new Pixel The previous phone must be disconnected from Chromebook settings before the replacement is set up Use the phone-selection section below
App streaming ChromeOS M115 or later, Pixel 4a or later on Android 13 or later, close proximity and a compatible shared network or Pixel hotspot Use the separate app-streaming section

Keeping these cases separate prevents a network problem in app streaming from being mistaken for a failure of the basic phone link. It also tells you what a successful test means: if Phone Hub controls and phone information appear but an app will not open on the Chromebook, the account link is at least working and the streaming branch is the one to investigate.

Check the prerequisites before changing anything

Use one Google Account on both devices

The Pixel and Chromebook should be signed in to the same Google Account. If the Chromebook has several accounts, confirm which account is active before starting setup; a phone associated with a different account may not appear as the expected choice. Check the account on the Pixel as well, rather than assuming that the account used for ChromeOS is the one used during Android setup.

Account matching is a prerequisite, not a later optional sign-in. If you change accounts while troubleshooting, recheck the active account before trying the setup wizard again so you do not mistake an account mismatch for a Bluetooth fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the available updates

On the Pixel, install pending Android updates and update Google Play Services. Also install any ChromeOS update offered by the Chromebook. Google’s general Android-to-Chromebook page lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later as minimums. Its Phone Hub page lists Chromebook M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later. Those are requirements stated on two different Google pages, and feature requirements can change, so a device near either minimum should be checked against the current support page: Connect your Android phone to your Chromebook and Set up and use Phone Hub.

Do not treat a listed minimum as a guarantee that every Phone Hub capability is present. Basic connection and app streaming have different thresholds. Updating both devices first removes an avoidable version variable and ensures that the setup screens you see match the current ChromeOS and Android behavior.

Turn on Bluetooth without pairing the Pixel as an accessory

Enable Bluetooth on both devices. Do not open the Chromebook’s generic Bluetooth “pair new device” list and add the Pixel there. That creates the wrong type of relationship and can leave a stale direct pairing that interferes with Phone Hub.

Bluetooth being on does not mean the Pixel should appear as a keyboard, headset or other accessory. The correct signpost is Connected devices and its Android phone entry. If you cannot find that entry, verify that you are in the Chromebook’s system settings rather than the quick Bluetooth panel.

Fix Phone Hub in the right order

1. Start from the Android-phone setup flow

  1. On the Chromebook, open the system settings.
  2. Select Connected devices.
  3. Choose Android phone.
  4. Select Set up and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you were trying to connect from the Bluetooth device list, stop that attempt, return to this path and begin again. Bluetooth should remain on at both ends while the setup wizard runs. Keep the Pixel available during the prompts so you can approve any on-screen setup requests; do not start a second setup attempt from another settings page at the same time.

2. Confirm the account and software state

Before retrying, check the account shown on the Chromebook and the account used on the Pixel. They must match. On the phone, apply Android and Google Play Services updates; on the Chromebook, apply ChromeOS updates and restart if the update requests it. A version that meets an older minimum can still lack a newer feature or fix, so update first rather than treating the minimum version as a guarantee that every Phone Hub feature is available.

After updating, test the ordinary Phone Hub connection before testing app streaming. This gives you a clean baseline: first establish that the Pixel can be selected and that Phone Hub information appears, then investigate any feature that remains unavailable.

3. Remove a stale direct Bluetooth pairing

If the Pixel and Chromebook were previously connected through the ordinary Bluetooth settings, remove that pairing from both devices. The goal is to clear the old accessory relationship, not to create a new one. After removing it, confirm that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices and return to Settings > Connected devices > Android phone > Set up. Google specifically recommends removing a previous Bluetooth pairing when Phone Hub will not connect; see the Phone Hub troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the old entry at each end, not just from the Chromebook. Leaving one side remembering a direct pairing can make a later attempt look as though the phone is already connected while Phone Hub itself is not configured. Once the entries are gone, resist the temptation to add the Pixel back through “pair new device”; return to the Android-phone wizard instead.

4. Refresh Bluetooth and restart ChromeOS

  1. On the Pixel, turn Bluetooth off.
  2. Wait briefly, then turn Bluetooth on again.
  3. Turn the Chromebook off and back on; use a full power-off and start-up rather than merely closing the lid.
  4. After ChromeOS loads, retry the Android-phone setup flow.

This refresh is useful after an interrupted setup or a Bluetooth service that has stopped advertising the phone. Test the connection after the refresh before making additional changes. If it works after the restart, avoid recreating a direct Bluetooth accessory pairing, since that can return the original conflict.

5. Disconnect the old phone when replacing a device

Phone Hub keeps a selected phone association. If you moved from another handset to the Pixel, disconnect the old entry first:

  1. Open Chromebook Settings > Connected devices.
  2. Select the currently connected phone.
  3. Choose Disconnect.
  4. Return to Android phone > Set up and select the Pixel.

If several phone entries are offered, Google advises choosing the first one. If it has not connected after a few minutes, forget that phone entry and try another listed entry. This guidance is documented in Connect your Android phone to your Chromebook. Do not leave the old phone selected while repeatedly attempting to add the replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A replacement-phone problem is therefore different from a first-time setup problem. Clear the existing selection first, then make one deliberate attempt with the Pixel. If the first offered entry remains unconnected for several minutes, use the forget-and-try-another process rather than endlessly repeating the same selection.

6. Check whether the Chromebook is managed

A work or school Chromebook can have Phone Hub or related phone features restricted by policy. If the device is enrolled by an organization, you may not be able to change the required setting yourself. Google says managed users may need to contact their administrator; see Phone Hub help and the Android-connection guide.

Tell the administrator that you are attempting the Android-phone connection from Connected devices and provide the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version and Pixel model. Avoid factory-resetting an organization-managed Chromebook unless the administrator instructs you to do so. A policy restriction will not be corrected by buying a cable, repeating Bluetooth pairing or changing the Pixel’s network.

When basic Phone Hub works but app streaming does not

App streaming is a separate feature with tighter requirements. A working phone connection does not prove that streaming is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Chromebook must run ChromeOS M115 or later.
  • The phone must be a Pixel 4a or later running Android 13 or later.
  • The Pixel and Chromebook need to be close to each other.
  • They normally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • If the existing network does not support streaming, using the Pixel’s hotspot can allow the feature to work.
  • Some public or private Wi-Fi networks do not permit the required local communication.

These requirements come from Google’s Pixel app-streaming instructions. First establish ordinary Phone Hub, then check the ChromeOS and Android versions and test while both devices are nearby. If streaming fails only on a particular network, try the Pixel hotspot as the comparison; a successful hotspot test points to network compatibility rather than a broken Phone Hub account link.

The hotspot test is diagnostic, not a promise that every network will work. If streaming works over the Pixel hotspot but not on a public or private Wi-Fi network, the local network is the relevant difference. If it fails on both networks, recheck the M115, Pixel 4a and Android 13 thresholds, proximity and the basic Phone Hub connection before drawing a conclusion.

Use the symptom to choose the next step

What you see Most relevant check
The Pixel does not appear during setup Verify the same Google Account, update both devices, enable Bluetooth and use Connected devices instead of the Bluetooth accessory list.
Setup worked before but now fails Remove any direct Bluetooth pairing, toggle Bluetooth on the Pixel and restart the Chromebook.
A new Pixel will not replace the previous phone Disconnect the old phone under Connected devices, then set up the Pixel; if multiple entries appear, try the first and forget it if it remains unconnected after a few minutes.
Phone Hub controls work but app streaming is unavailable Check M115+, Pixel 4a+, Android 13+, proximity and the Wi-Fi or hotspot requirements.
Other Bluetooth devices also fail to connect Use the broader Chromebook Bluetooth procedure in the next section.
The Chromebook belongs to a school or employer Ask the administrator whether phone features are restricted.
The Pixel connects but only on a hotspot Investigate compatibility of the original Wi-Fi network; some networks do not permit the local communication streaming needs.

This symptom-first approach prevents unrelated fixes from being mixed together. For example, a Pixel that never appears in the Android-phone wizard needs an account, update, Bluetooth-state or management check—not an app-streaming network change. Conversely, a Pixel that already supplies Phone Hub controls has passed the basic connection test.

If Bluetooth itself is failing

When headphones, keyboards or other Bluetooth accessories also fail, the issue may be broader than Phone Hub. Google’s general Chromebook procedure is to check for system updates, toggle Bluetooth off and on, restart the Chromebook and, if the problem persists, perform a Chromebook hard reset. Follow the current button sequence and warnings on Connect Chromebook to Bluetooth devices; the exact reset procedure can differ by Chromebook design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this branch only when ordinary Bluetooth behavior is also broken. A Pixel should still be selected through Connected devices > Android phone, even after Bluetooth is working for accessories. The general Bluetooth procedure does not change the Phone Hub rule that the phone is not paired through the accessory list.

What you do not need for this fix

The documented solution is software and account configuration. It does not require a cable, adapter, paid utility or replacement Bluetooth accessory. Buying connectivity hardware will not correct an incorrect setup path, a mismatched Google Account, a stale pairing, an organizational restriction or an unsupported app-streaming configuration.

Likewise, do not infer a hardware failure merely because streaming is unavailable. Streaming has stricter version, proximity and network conditions than basic Phone Hub. Establish the basic link and compare networks before deciding that the Pixel or Chromebook needs repair.

When to escalate

Escalate to Google or the Chromebook administrator after completing the relevant branch above and recording the details that distinguish the failure: Chromebook model and ChromeOS version, Pixel model and Android version, whether both devices share a Google Account, whether direct Bluetooth pairing was removed, whether basic Phone Hub works, and whether app streaming fails only on one network. This information separates an account or policy restriction from a version, proximity or network limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not interpret the published version thresholds as a promise that every feature works on every device at those minimums. They identify the versions Google lists for the relevant feature; hardware support, regional availability and future ChromeOS changes can still affect what appears in settings.

If the Chromebook is managed, include the organization’s enrollment status when contacting the administrator. If the issue is network-specific, report which network failed and whether the Pixel hotspot succeeded. If the issue affects all Bluetooth accessories, include that fact so support can follow the broader Bluetooth path rather than treating it as a Phone Hub-only problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pair my Pixel to a Chromebook from the Bluetooth device list?

No. Google says a phone cannot pair to a Chromebook with Bluetooth as a normal accessory. Turn Bluetooth on, but use Settings > Connected devices > Android phone > Set up for Phone Hub.

What accounts must the Pixel and Chromebook use?

Use the same Google Account on both devices. If the Chromebook has multiple accounts, confirm which one is active before setup.

Should I remove an old Bluetooth pairing?

Yes, if the Pixel and Chromebook were previously paired through ordinary Bluetooth settings. Remove that pairing from both devices, turn Bluetooth on again, and repeat the Android-phone setup flow.

How do I connect a new Pixel after replacing my phone?

In Chromebook Settings > Connected devices, select the current phone and choose Disconnect. Then return to Android phone > Set up and select the Pixel. If several entries appear, try the first; forget it and try another if it remains unconnected after a few minutes.

Why does Phone Hub work while app streaming does not?

Streaming has stricter requirements: ChromeOS M115 or later, a Pixel 4a or later on Android 13 or later, close proximity and a compatible shared Wi-Fi network. Some networks fail; the Pixel hotspot can provide a useful comparison.

Can a school or work Chromebook block Phone Hub?

Yes. Organization management can restrict phone features. Contact the administrator rather than factory-resetting the Chromebook or repeatedly changing Bluetooth settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a cable, adapter or Bluetooth accessory to fix Phone Hub?

No. The documented fixes concern the Connected devices setup flow, account, software updates, pairing state, device selection, management policy and streaming-network requirements.

The Bottom Line

Use Connected devices > Android phone > Set up, not Bluetooth pairing. Match the Google Account, update Android, Google Play Services and ChromeOS, remove stale direct pairings, refresh Bluetooth and disconnect an old phone before adding a replacement. If basic Phone Hub works but streaming does not, check M115+, Pixel 4a+/Android 13+, proximity and the Wi-Fi or hotspot path. Managed Chromebooks may require an administrator.
