Start by installing every update available for your Steam or Epic Games Store edition of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Then compare your CPU, graphics card, memory, Windows version and SSD against Square Enix’s published targets, and inspect the graphics preset and anti-aliasing method in the game. That sequence separates hardware below the target from problems addressed by an official patch and from symptoms that still require case-specific diagnosis.
Square Enix has documented stability improvements, a crash fix for certain AMD Radeon products, a change to the default DLSS anti-aliasing selection and a Windows preset correction for AMD Radeon and Intel Arc systems. Those updates are important, but they do not establish one configuration that fixes every PC.

First, identify which problem you have
“Performance issues” can mean several different things: a frame rate that stays below the intended target, uneven frame pacing, a crash, a preset that changes another option unexpectedly, or an image that looks soft or unstable. The right first move depends on which of those you are seeing.
| What you observe | Most useful first check | What the official information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Low frame rate at 1080p | Compare your complete system with the minimum and recommended targets, then test the Low or Medium target that matches your hardware. | Square Enix lists 1080p/30 FPS on Low as the minimum target and 1080p/60 FPS on Medium as the recommended target. |
| Uneven or inconsistent frame pacing | Record your resolution, preset, frame-rate cap, GPU and CPU models, and whether variable refresh is enabled. | The PC version supports variable refresh rate, but the cited official material does not document a universal fix for every pacing problem. |
| Crash on an AMD Radeon system | Confirm that the game has installed the current storefront update. | Version 1.003 lists a fix for crashes that occurred on PCs using certain AMD Radeon products. |
| Blurry, shimmering or otherwise unexpected image quality | Check the selected preset and the Anti-Aliasing Method immediately afterward. | Version 1.001 changed the default to DLSS on supported NVIDIA systems; Windows Version 1.1 corrected preset behavior to use default FSR on AMD Radeon and Intel Arc systems. |
| A preset changes another graphics option | Change the preset once, then inspect anti-aliasing rather than assuming the old value remained. | Square Enix documented a Windows Version 1.1 correction for AMD Radeon and Intel Arc PCs. |
Do not treat a single patch note as proof that every crash, hitch or visual artifact has the same cause. If your symptom remains after the checks below, collect the details listed in the final section instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

Install the current game update before changing settings
Square Enix’s update notices repeatedly tell players to apply the latest update. The official pages cited here do not provide one current build number that applies to every storefront, so use the update state shown by your own launcher.
- Identify the edition. Confirm whether your copy is the Steam or Epic Games Store version.
- Open the game’s update controls. In Steam, use the game’s Library properties and update settings; in Epic Games Store, open the game’s library management controls and check for an available update. Keep automatic updates enabled if you want the launcher to apply future fixes.
- Allow the download and installation to finish. Do not launch while the storefront still shows a pending update, queued patch or file verification.
- Restart the launcher and the game. This ensures the updated executable and supporting files are loaded rather than a process left running from an earlier version.
For the documented update history, see Square Enix’s notice regarding updates to FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. Because the English Windows Version 1.1 support page does not display a date or build identifier, rely on the storefront’s installed-update state instead of assuming a numbered build.
Compare your PC with Square Enix’s published targets
Square Enix presents these configurations as targets for particular resolutions, frame rates and presets. They are not a guarantee for every combination of driver, scene, background process, display mode or graphics option.
Recommended Free Tools
| Target | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Resolution, frame rate and preset |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 64-bit Windows 10 | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i3-8100 | 16 GB RAM | AMD Radeon RX 6600, Intel Arc A580 or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 class | 1080p at 30 FPS on Low |
| Recommended | 64-bit Windows 10 | AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 3700X; Intel Core i7-8700 or Core i5-10400 | 16 GB RAM | AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 | 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium |
The requirements also list an SSD and 155 GB of available storage. That capacity is space required for the installation, not a promise that any SSD will remove a GPU bottleneck or cure every hitch. Leave additional free space for the operating system, updates and normal drive operation.
Square Enix separately recommends a graphics card with 12 GB or more of GPU memory for playing at 4K. The minimum specification is therefore not a 4K recommendation, and meeting the recommended 1080p/60 target does not imply a 4K/60 result. Check your card’s actual VRAM rather than inferring it from the model name.
The full requirements and feature information are on Square Enix’s official FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH PC page. When comparing your computer, record the exact CPU and GPU model, system RAM, GPU memory, Windows edition, free space and whether the game is installed on an SSD.
Understand the game’s presets and anti-aliasing
Square Enix says the PC version has three default graphics presets and customizable settings. The official FAQ does not establish that one preset is optimal for every GPU, so use the published Low and Medium targets as starting points rather than as universal recommendations.

Use a controlled baseline
- Set the display to 1920×1080 temporarily if you are diagnosing a performance problem. This matches both official target resolutions.
- Select the preset closest to your hardware target: Low for a system near the minimum specification, or Medium for a system near the recommended specification.
- Apply the change, return to the graphics menu and inspect Anti-Aliasing Method. Do not assume that changing a preset leaves this option untouched.
- Play the same demanding area or repeat the same camera movement for a short comparison. Record the frame-rate behavior and image quality rather than changing several settings at once.
This method does not create a guaranteed benchmark; it simply gives you a repeatable starting point before you investigate individual options.

DLSS on supported NVIDIA systems
Square Enix’s Version 1.001 notice says supported NVIDIA DLSS systems now default to DLSS for the Anti-Aliasing Method. If a supported NVIDIA PC still shows a different method after an update, inspect the setting directly and save your preferred choice. A softer or sharper image can result from the selected reconstruction and anti-aliasing method, so describe that setting when asking for help.
FSR behavior on AMD Radeon and Intel Arc systems
Square Enix Support’s Windows Version 1.1 notice says that changing the graphics preset on PCs with AMD Radeon or Intel Arc graphics now correctly sets the Anti-Aliasing option to the default FSR. If your preset appears to change anti-aliasing unexpectedly, update first, change the preset again and then verify the option. The Japanese support notice dated June 9, 2026 reports the same correction: Square Enix Support Japan update notice. The English notice is available at [Windows] Notice of Update.
What the official patches fixed
Knowing what a patch actually changed prevents you from expecting it to solve an unrelated problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Update | Documented change | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| PC Version 1.003 | Improved general stability and fixed an issue in which the application sometimes crashed on PCs using certain AMD Radeon products. | AMD Radeon users should verify the update before pursuing hardware changes. The note does not say that every Radeon crash has the same cause. |
| PC Version 1.001 | On supported NVIDIA DLSS systems, DLSS became the default for Anti-Aliasing Method; the DirectStorage DLL was also updated. | Inspect the anti-aliasing selection after updating. The DLL change is a component update, not a documented promise of a particular frame-rate increase. |
| Windows Version 1.1 | Changing the graphics preset on AMD Radeon and Intel Arc PCs now correctly sets Anti-Aliasing to the default FSR. | After updating, change the preset and check that the anti-aliasing method matches the expected default. |
| Update 1.020 | The listed entry includes frame-rate, stability and graphical-quality changes, but it predates the PC release. | Do not use this entry as evidence of a PC-specific fix or conflate it with the PC patch history. |
Square Enix’s update page was last updated March 5, 2025. Storefront availability and installed files can differ, which is why the launcher’s update status is the practical check for your copy.
Fix low FPS without guessing
If your hardware is below minimum
A system below the listed CPU, GPU, RAM or operating-system baseline is outside Square Enix’s stated 1080p/30 Low target. Lowering options may make the game start or reduce load, but the published information does not promise a particular result below that baseline. Check the graphics card and CPU first, because adding storage cannot compensate for insufficient rendering capability.
If your hardware is near the minimum target
- Use 1080p and the Low preset as the comparison point.
- Close background applications that compete for CPU time, memory or GPU resources.
- Check that the game is installed on an SSD with at least 155 GB available for the installation and adequate additional free space.
- After each change, repeat the same scene or route and record whether the problem is low average FPS, sudden drops or uneven pacing.
Do not describe 30 FPS as a guaranteed result: it is the performance target attached to the minimum configuration, not an independent test of your particular PC.
If your hardware matches the recommended target
Begin at 1080p and Medium, which is the configuration Square Enix associates with 60 FPS. If you increase resolution, preset quality or demanding effects, you are no longer testing the stated recommended target. A system can meet the listed processor and graphics-card models and still vary by driver, cooling, background load and game scene.
If you are aiming for 4K
Check GPU memory before changing every quality option. Square Enix recommends at least 12 GB of GPU memory for 4K, and that recommendation is separate from the 1080p minimum and recommended targets. A card with less memory is not automatically incapable of launching the game, but it is outside the stated 4K recommendation.

Address frame pacing and variable refresh carefully
The PC feature list includes variable refresh rate support and up to 120 FPS on high-spec PCs. Those are capabilities, not an assurance that every monitor, cable, driver or scene will sustain 120 FPS. If your display supports variable refresh, record whether it is enabled while diagnosing uneven motion, along with the game’s resolution, preset and any frame-rate limit. Compare one change at a time so you can tell whether the symptom is tied to the display mode or to rendering load.
A high-refresh display does not turn the 1080p/30 minimum target into a 120-FPS expectation. The 120-FPS statement applies to high-spec environments, while the official minimum and recommended targets remain 1080p at 30 FPS on Low and 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium.
When the image looks blurry or unstable
- Confirm the output resolution is the one you intend to use; begin at 1080p while troubleshooting.
- Check the selected graphics preset.
- Open the anti-aliasing control and note whether it is DLSS, FSR or another available method.
- On a supported NVIDIA system, verify whether the updated default is DLSS.
- On AMD Radeon or Intel Arc, change the preset once after installing Windows Version 1.1, then verify that the default FSR selection is present.
- Save the setting, restart the game if the menu requests it, and compare the same scene.
“Blurry” is not a single technical diagnosis. Reconstruction method, output resolution, motion and scene detail can all affect perception, and the official material does not identify one setting that resolves every visual complaint. Include the exact anti-aliasing method in any support report.
Storage and upgrade decisions
When an SSD is relevant
An SSD is an explicit requirement, and Square Enix lists 155 GB of available storage. If the game is on a mechanical hard drive or the installation drive is nearly full, moving it to a compatible internal SSD and restoring adequate free capacity is a reasonable prerequisite check. It is not evidence that an SSD upgrade will fix a GPU-limited frame rate, a crash caused by another component or every form of stutter.
When a GPU upgrade is justified
Compare the card you own with the listed RX 6600, Arc A580 or RTX 2060-class minimum and RX 6700 XT or RTX 2070 recommended graphics. Then compare your desired resolution and GPU memory: 1080p targets and the separate 12 GB-or-more 4K recommendation imply different upgrade requirements. Check power supply, case clearance, motherboard interface and CPU balance before purchasing. No current price or independent performance ranking is established here, so avoid choosing a specific model solely from these requirements.
When not to buy hardware yet
- The game has not installed an available patch.
- Your symptom is a preset or anti-aliasing value changing unexpectedly.
- Your PC already exceeds the target and the problem appears only in one scene or after a particular setting change.
- You have not recorded the exact crash text, driver version, game version and graphics configuration.
What to record if the issue remains
Official requirements and patch notes cannot diagnose every machine-specific result. Before contacting support or asking for troubleshooting help, capture:
- Steam or Epic Games Store edition.
- Installed game version as shown by the storefront or in-game information.
- Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU model, GPU model and GPU VRAM.
- System RAM and free storage space.
- Whether the game is installed on an SSD.
- GPU driver version.
- Display resolution, refresh rate, variable-refresh status and frame-rate limit.
- Selected preset and Anti-Aliasing Method.
- The exact symptom: average FPS, sudden drops, visible hitching, blurry output, preset reset or crash text.
- Whether the problem began after changing a preset, installing an update or switching display settings.
This information lets a responder distinguish a system below the published baseline, a documented patch-related behavior and an issue for which no universal fix has been established. Do not infer a cause from a forum anecdote when the same symptom can result from different hardware and settings combinations.

Square Enix’s PC page documents three default presets, customizable graphics settings, NVIDIA DLSS support, variable refresh rate support and up to 120 FPS on high-spec PCs. Its requirements page supplies targets at 1080p, while the 4K note adds a 12 GB-or-greater GPU-memory recommendation. The update notices document specific corrections rather than a blanket performance guarantee.
Use those facts as boundaries: update first, compare the complete system, test a known resolution and preset, inspect anti-aliasing after preset changes, and collect configuration details before escalating. That approach avoids buying an SSD or GPU for a problem that an update or setting check can explain, while also making clear when your hardware is below the game’s published target.
