Fixing a pdfium.dll error normally means repairing or reinstalling the application that displays it. PDFium is usually bundled with that application, so downloading a standalone DLL from an unrelated website can create a version, architecture, or security problem. First identify the exact message and the application named in it; then restore the vendor-matched files, install any Microsoft Visual C++ runtime named by the dialog, restart, and update the application.
What pdfium.dll is and why Windows reports it
pdfium.dll is the Windows library that provides PDF rendering through PDFium, the open-source PDF engine used by Chromium and by applications built with it. It is normally distributed as part of an application rather than as a standard Windows component. The application’s executable calls the copy of PDFium it was built and tested against.

A message about the file therefore usually means one of four things: Windows cannot find the file, Windows cannot load it, the file does not export the function the application expects, or another dependency required by the DLL is missing. The exact wording is important because each case points to a different repair.

- “pdfium.dll was not found” or “cannot find pdfium.dll”: the file may have been deleted, quarantined, moved, or omitted by an incomplete installation.
- “The procedure entry point was not found”: the executable and DLL are likely from incompatible builds. A DLL copied from another release can produce this error even when the filename is correct.
- A crash immediately after opening a PDF: PDFium or one of its dependencies may be corrupt, mismatched, or blocked.
- An additional
MSVCP140.dllorVCRUNTIME140.dllmessage: the application may also need the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
PDFium’s Windows documentation identifies x64 as the default architecture and x86 as an available option. The application, its PDFium binary, and any runtime dependencies must use compatible architecture and build versions.

Do not download a random standalone pdfium.dll
A DLL-download site cannot reliably tell you which PDFium revision, compiler build, architecture, or companion files your application requires. Replacing a missing file with an unrelated build can turn a simple “file not found” message into an entry-point error or an application crash. It also removes the normal publisher update and support path.
The safe source is the application’s own repair function or installer from its publisher. If security software removed the file, restore it only after verifying that the file is signed or supplied by the application publisher. If that verification is not possible, reinstall the application from the publisher instead.
Identify the exact failure before changing files
Record the complete dialog
Write down the exact text, including capitalization and every DLL named. Note whether the wording says “was not found,” “entry point was not found,” or simply reports that the program stopped working. Also record when it appears: during installation, at application launch, when opening a PDF, or after an update.

Identify the owning application
Record the application name and version shown in its About screen or in Windows’ installed-app list. The same filename can be packaged differently by different applications, so the owning application determines which copy is correct.
Record Windows and architecture details
Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit and, when known, whether the affected application is x64 or x86. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows can still require the x86 Visual C++ Redistributable. Architecture must be matched to the application, not guessed from the operating system alone.

Step-by-step fix for a missing pdfium.dll
- Close the affected application. If it is frozen, end it using Task Manager and save any work that remains available. Do not delete DLLs from its installation folder as a first step.
- Capture the error and application details. Record the dialog text, application name and version, Windows architecture, and the point at which the error appears. Keep this information for later support if needed.
- Try Windows’ Repair option. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the affected application, open Advanced options when that option is available, and choose Repair. The exact controls vary by application; some desktop installers provide their own Repair command instead.
- Launch the application again. If the error is gone, open a representative PDF and confirm that rendering, printing, and any other PDF features you use work normally.
- Run the publisher’s installer if Repair is unavailable or ineffective. Obtain the current installer from the application publisher, close the application, and run the installer. Choose its repair or reinstall option when offered. This restores the PDFium file that belongs with that release rather than a generic DLL.
- Restart Windows if requested. A reboot can release a locked old module and complete replacement of files that were in use.
- Install the application’s current vendor update. An interrupted update can leave a new executable beside an older PDFium library. Updating after repair or reinstall synchronizes the application and its bundled files.
When the dialog also names MSVCP140.dll or VCRUNTIME140.dll
PDFium itself may be present while a Microsoft C/C++ runtime required by the application is missing. If the dialog names MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or another MSVC runtime, install the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for the application’s target architecture.

- Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable download page, not a third-party DLL repository.
- Determine whether the affected application is x64 or x86. Install x64 for a 64-bit application and x86 for a 32-bit application. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows still needs x86.
- Run the installer, accept the repair or installation choice it presents, and restart if requested.
- Retry the application. If the PDFium message remains, repair or reinstall the owning application as well; installing a runtime does not replace a missing or mismatched PDFium binary.
Microsoft’s Visual C++ documentation states that the redistributable package architecture must match the application’s target architecture. Installing only the package that matches Windows, rather than the application, can leave a 32-bit program unable to start.
Fix an “entry point not found” pdfium.dll error
An entry-point error is a strong sign that the executable and pdfium.dll are from different builds. This often happens after someone copied a DLL from another computer, retained an old file during an update, or installed files from different application versions.
- Remove the copied or manually substituted PDFium file only if you know it was introduced outside the application’s installer. Do not delete the application’s entire folder.
- Use the application’s Repair option or run the publisher’s installer again. Let that process place the correct binary beside the executable.
- Install the application’s latest compatible update after repair.
- If the error continues, provide the publisher with the exact entry-point text, application version, Windows architecture, installation path, and any installer or crash logs. The publisher can identify the expected PDFium build.
Copying a DLL from another computer is not a dependable workaround because two computers may have different application releases, architectures, or PDFium build options. Use such a file only when the application vendor explicitly supplies that exact build and gives installation instructions.

When antivirus software quarantines the file
If pdfium.dll is present immediately after installation but disappears later, open your security software’s quarantine or detection history. Confirm the application and file path, and check whether the file is digitally signed or came directly from the publisher’s installer.
- If the file is verified as publisher-supplied, follow the security product’s restore and allow-list process, then update the application.
- If the file is unsigned, came from an unofficial download, or its origin is unclear, do not restore it. Uninstall or repair the application using its publisher’s installer and run a malware scan.
- If quarantine repeats after a clean publisher installation, preserve the detection name and path and contact both the security-software vendor and the application publisher.
Security software can be one explanation for a missing file, but the disappearance alone does not prove that the computer is infected. Treat the file’s source and signature as the deciding evidence.

If you distribute an application that uses PDFium, Windows must be able to locate the matching pdfium.dll. PDFium binary-distribution guidance says to place the DLL in the same folder as the executable or make it available on the system PATH. Keeping it beside the executable is generally easier to associate with the exact application build.

- Ship the PDFium binary built for the same target as the executable: x64 with x64, or x86 with x86.
- Keep the DLL synchronized with the PDFium revision and build options expected by the consuming code.
- Include the file in the installer and verify that upgrades replace the executable and PDFium pair together.
- Test a clean-machine installation, not only a developer workstation that may already have another copy on its
PATH. - Collect installer and crash logs so support staff can distinguish a missing file from an entry-point mismatch.
Chromium’s PDFium project documents Windows x64 as its default architecture and x86 as an option. That documentation does not mean every application uses the default; the consuming application’s build remains the authority.
What not to do
- Do not replace the file with the first result from a DLL-download website.
- Do not rename an x86 DLL to make it appear compatible with an x64 application, or vice versa.
- Do not copy a PDFium file from another computer unless the vendor explicitly identifies the same application version, architecture, and build.
- Do not keep an old DLL in the application folder after reinstalling if it was manually added; it can be loaded before the vendor’s intended copy and recreate the mismatch.
- Do not install a Visual C++ package solely because Windows is 64-bit; choose the architecture required by the application.
If the error remains after reinstalling
At this point, avoid further DLL substitutions and escalate with evidence. Send the application vendor:
- the exact application name and version;
- your Windows edition and architecture;
- the complete dialog text, including every named DLL or entry point;
- the application’s installation path;
- the sequence that triggers the problem;
- the result of Repair, reinstall, runtime installation, and any security-software quarantine review; and
- relevant crash, installer, or security logs.
This information lets the vendor determine whether the problem is a missing packaged file, an architecture mismatch, an interrupted update, a runtime dependency, or a security product’s action. It also avoids destroying evidence by repeatedly copying unrelated DLLs.
