If a PC game crashes or stutters and uses Denuvo, start with ordinary, reversible troubleshooting—not by assuming Denuvo is the cause. Identify the game and the type of Denuvo product it uses, note when the problem occurs, then check requirements, game files, Windows and graphics drivers, background apps, settings, and heat as relevant. A timing link alone does not establish what caused the problem.
First, identify the symptom and the Denuvo product
“Denuvo” can refer to different products. Anti-Tamper is a game’s DRM technology; Anti-Cheat is used for multiplayer protection. A game’s use of one does not establish that another is present, or that either is responsible for a crash or stutter. For example, the TRIBES 3: Rivals FAQ says that game uses Denuvo Anti-Cheat, not Denuvo’s DRM product.

Before changing settings, write down the game and launcher, the exact error message, when the problem happens, and whether it began after a game, Windows, or driver update. Note whether the symptom is failure to launch, a crash after gameplay begins, stuttering, or a whole-PC freeze or blue screen. Also check whether other games or applications are affected. These details help choose a useful next test; none proves Denuvo is involved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry low-risk checks in order
Check system requirements and game updates
Compare your PC with the game’s minimum requirements and check the publisher’s current notices for a game-specific patch. Capcom warns that a PC below minimum requirements may have poor frame rates or fail to run; if it meets minimum but not recommended requirements, lowering graphics settings may help. See Capcom’s Steam-game troubleshooting guide.

Restart, then verify the game files
Restart the PC, then use the launcher’s repair or verification option. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam compares downloaded files with its manifest and reacquires missing or altered files. Steam also notes that some local configuration files may not verify normally; that warning alone does not show that a Denuvo component is damaged. See Steam’s file-verification instructions.
Update Windows and graphics drivers from official sources
Install available Windows updates and graphics drivers from Windows Update or the GPU manufacturer’s official software or support page. Capcom notes that an outdated video driver can cause visual problems or prevent a game from starting, and recommends restarting after installing a graphics driver. Steam also recommends keeping Windows and device drivers current. Avoid unofficial or modified driver packages as a routine fix. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide.

Reduce background software and settings variables
Temporarily close non-essential applications, especially recording software and performance overlays, then retry the game. For stutter, reduce graphics settings or the frame-rate limit and check that a dual-GPU laptop is using the intended GPU. Change one thing at a time and note whether it changes the symptom; changing several settings together makes the result harder to interpret. Capcom’s guide covers closing background applications, graphics settings, and GPU selection.
Check temperatures when the symptoms point to heat
Heat is worth investigating if games or applications slow or stutter before the entire PC crashes. Check that vents are unobstructed and that the system has adequate airflow. Lowering graphics settings or limiting frame rate may reduce heat. Steam lists overheating as a possible factor in whole-computer crashes, particularly when slowdown comes first; this is a reason to check temperatures, not a diagnosis by itself. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide and Steam’s guidance for whole-PC blue- or gray-screen crashes.

Use the pattern to choose what to test next
| What you observe | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| One game fails to launch | Check its requirements and publisher notices, verify its files, and record the exact error. |
| A game crashes after play begins | Note when it happens and whether it followed an update; verify files and check for a game-specific patch. |
| One game stutters | Check requirements, graphics settings, background resource use, GPU selection, and temperatures if slowdown suggests heat. |
| Several games or applications fail, or the whole PC freezes | Look beyond one game: note recent Windows or driver changes and investigate system-level symptoms. A whole-PC crash is not evidence by itself of a Denuvo fault. |
| The issue started after an update | Record which update and when; check the game publisher’s notices and include that timeline in a support request. |
These patterns help narrow the next test but cannot establish the cause on their own. File verification, error text, system requirements, temperatures, and crash reports can provide more useful evidence.

Do not delete anti-cheat or anti-tamper files, attempt to bypass protection, or change security settings just to test a suspicion. The official troubleshooting guidance points instead to file verification, updates, isolating background apps, and publisher support. If you suspect a security-software conflict, follow the game publisher’s instructions and the security vendor’s documentation.

Product behavior is also game-specific. Irdeto’s Denuvo Anti-Cheat Q&A says Anti-Cheat installs and runs when competitive multiplayer features are accessed, not when the game starts. That vendor statement describes its product design; it does not diagnose an individual crash or stutter.
When to contact the publisher
If the problem persists after the relevant checks, contact the game publisher’s support team. Include the game and launcher, system specifications, Windows version, GPU and driver version, exact error text, recent updates or other changes, and a crash report if available. Follow that game’s instructions for locating reports: Capcom’s guide, for example, describes a game-specific CrashReport folder, but other titles may store reports elsewhere.
What the available game-specific examples do—and do not—show
The TRIBES 3 publisher FAQ reports that its development team tested that game with and without Denuvo Anti-Cheat and “did not observe any noticeable performance difference.” The FAQ attributes responses to Denuvo’s product manager for PC Products dated March 4, 2024. This is a publisher-reported, qualitative result for TRIBES 3 and Anti-Cheat—not independent testing, a numerical benchmark, or evidence about other games or Denuvo Anti-Tamper.
A separate example illustrates why version and date matter. KRAFTON’s notice, updated December 4, 2025, said Denuvo support for the PC version of Hi-Fi RUSH was scheduled to end at 00:00 KST on January 16, 2026, and that a mandatory patch was required by then for the game to run after the deadline. That was a historical, game-specific notice, not a statement about other titles. Check the current KRAFTON notice and the installed game version before relying on it.
