If Palworld suddenly sends you to character creation, do not create a permanent replacement before preserving the save. The most documented cause is a player-save identity mismatch: a migrated server generates a different player GUID, so it cannot associate your existing character with your world. A damaged player file can cause the same symptom. Your map may still be present, and an update does not automatically mean your character was intentionally wiped.

Stop the game or server, make an untouched copy of the save, identify whether it is local/co-op or dedicated-server data, then use the recovery path that matches that environment. GUID remapping is the appropriate route for most co-op-to-dedicated and Windows/Linux dedicated-server migrations; rollback is safer for a local or co-op save; deleting player data is a last resort because it can remove inventory and Pals.

What the new-character prompt actually means
Palworld stores world progress and individual player progress separately. The world can retain its terrain, structures and map discovery while the server fails to match your player record. When that association fails, the server treats your login as a first-time player and opens character creation.
The strongest documented explanation is a GUID mismatch during migration. A GUID is the identifier the save uses to connect a person to their player data. Palworld save files differ between single-player/co-op, Windows dedicated servers, Linux dedicated servers and SteamCMD dedicated servers. Moving a save between those environments can produce a new GUID. If the new server’s GUID does not match the GUID attached to your old player save, the server presents a new-character screen even though the old data remains on disk.

This is why the problem is especially common after moving a co-op world to a dedicated server, changing from Windows to Linux hosting, or changing dedicated-server implementations. The Host Save Fix documentation describes this behavior as the bug that “forces a player to create a new character when they already have a save.”
A second failure mode is a corrupted or unreadable player file on a dedicated server. In that case, the world may load normally, but the affected player record cannot be read. Replacing the player record can get the person back into the world, but it may sacrifice the inventory and Pals attached to the damaged file.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical distinction is important: a GUID mismatch usually calls for remapping an existing player record, while corruption may require replacing a record and restoring whatever can be recovered from a backup.
Do these safety steps before trying a fix
Every recovery method changes save data. Preserve the original first so that a failed experiment does not become permanent.
- Stop writing to the save. Exit Palworld. If the save is on a dedicated server, stop the server cleanly before copying or moving files. Do not keep joining with newly created characters while troubleshooting.
- Make a complete backup. Copy the entire local or server save, not only a single player file. Keep one untouched copy in a separate location and label it with the date, server type and game version. The Host Save Fix README calls its tool experimental and explicitly warns users to make a backup because data loss is possible.
- Identify the environment. Record whether the original was single-player/co-op, a Windows dedicated server, a Linux dedicated server or a SteamCMD dedicated server. Also record where the save is now hosted. The remedy depends on both sides of that migration.
- Record the symptom. Note whether the world map, buildings and storage still appear; whether every player or only one player is affected; and whether the prompt started immediately after a migration, update or crash. These observations help separate an identity mismatch from a damaged player file.
- Keep the newest and older backups separate. Do not overwrite an earlier backup with a newly generated save. A community rollback report found that an earlier backup restored a character more reliably than the newest backup in one case, so preserving multiple dated copies gives you options.
Choose the recovery method that matches your situation
| Situation | Recommended first attempt | What you need | Main risk | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-player or co-op save, original backup available | Rollback by creating a temporary save and copying an earlier world and character state | Access to the local save and a known-good backup | Restoring the wrong snapshot can roll back world progress | Community workflow |
| Co-op moved to a dedicated server | Remap the old player GUID to the GUID generated on the new server | Server file access, a temporary character, and the Host Save Fix tool or script | Incorrect file selection or interrupted processing can damage the save | Documented by Host Save Fix |
| Windows dedicated server moved to Linux, or the reverse | GUID remapping after confirming the destination server has written a new player record | Access to the destination save and its Players data | Cross-environment file mistakes | Documented by Host Save Fix |
| SteamCMD or another dedicated-server migration | Use the same GUID-remapping workflow, adapted to the destination host | Server-owner access and a complete backup | Host-specific file handling | Documented environment difference; verify host details |
| One player file appears corrupted | Restore that player file from backup; use replacement-character recovery only if necessary | Server-owner access to the Players folder and a dated backup | Inventory and Pals may be lost | Community fallback |
If you cannot identify the old save or do not have a backup, stop before deleting anything. A replacement character can make the server write new data over the only useful evidence.
Recover a local or co-op character with a rollback
This procedure comes from a Steam community report rather than an official recovery utility. It is most appropriate when the save is still local or co-op and you have an earlier copy of the world and character data.

- Create a temporary test save. Start Palworld, create a new temporary world and character, then return to the title screen. The goal is to let the game create a clean destination structure without touching your preserved backup.
- Close the game completely. Make sure no Palworld process is still writing the temporary save before replacing files.
- Copy the earlier world and character data. On the duplicate working copy, replace the temporary save’s corresponding world and player data with the files from the earlier backup. Keep the original backup untouched so you can try a different snapshot if the first one fails.
- Launch and test in a controlled way. Load the world, check whether the expected character, inventory and Pals appear, and confirm that the map and structures are coherent. Do not immediately overwrite your preserved backup with this test result.
- Try an older snapshot if needed. If the newest backup still opens character creation, test the next-oldest known-good backup. The community report specifically found that an earlier backup could work when the newest one did not.
This rollback may also roll back world construction, storage contents or progress made after the selected backup. Decide which loss is acceptable before promoting the restored copy to your active save. Because this workflow is community supplied, treat every file replacement as reversible testing rather than a guaranteed repair.
Fix a co-op-to-dedicated or cross-platform server migration with GUID remapping
When the world loads but your established character is treated as new after migration, remapping is usually safer than deleting the player record. The Host Save Fix project documents this workflow for affected co-op and dedicated-server transitions.
1. Put the migrated save on the destination server
Copy the original world save to the new dedicated server using the host’s normal save-import process. Confirm that the destination server can load the world before attempting any player repair. Do not work directly on your only copy.
2. Let the affected player create a temporary character
Start the destination server and have the affected player join once, then create a temporary character. This is intentional: it causes the destination server to write a fresh player record and the new GUID that belongs to that server environment. Do not spend time building a replacement character; its purpose is to provide the destination identifier.
3. Stop the server and make another backup
Shut the server down cleanly after the temporary character has been saved. Copy the complete destination save, including the player data, before running a remapping tool. Keep this copy separate from the pre-migration backup.
4. Run Host Save Fix against the copied save
The project provides a GUI and a script. Its documented process applies the new destination GUID to the old player save. Use the version and instructions supplied with the tool, install the Python dependencies it lists if you choose the script or GUI route, and point it at the copied save rather than the live server directory.

The tool is experimental. Check every selected input and output before starting, and do not interrupt file processing. The project’s warning about data loss is a reason to retain both backups, not a reason to skip the backup step.
5. Replace the test save and verify
After the tool completes, place the repaired copy in the destination server’s save location, start the server and have the affected player join. Check the character appearance and level, inventory, Pals, base ownership and map access. Test with one player first and stop again if the result is wrong; restore the untouched destination backup rather than attempting another edit on top of a failed result.

6. Repeat the mapping for other affected players
A migration can affect more than one account because the server environment changed for everyone. Each player needs a destination-side temporary character so the corresponding new GUID can be matched to that player’s old record. Do not assume that fixing one account automatically repairs the others.
Use player-file replacement only for a damaged dedicated-server record
If the server type did not change and only one player cannot load their character, corruption is a plausible explanation. Community troubleshooting describes a fallback that lets the person join with a replacement character after moving or deleting the damaged player data. This is destructive unless a backup exists.
- Back up the entire server save and the Players folder. Keep the original files in a separate location.
- Identify the affected player’s file. A server owner must compare the available player records and determine which one belongs to the affected account. Do not delete files merely because their names are unfamiliar.
- Move the suspected file out of the active save. Moving it to a quarantine folder is safer than permanent deletion and allows restoration if the diagnosis is wrong.
- Let the player join and create a replacement. The server will write a new player record and save ID. Record that new identifier before making further changes.
- Attempt restoration from the backup. Use the new identifier and the backed-up data according to the recovery procedure appropriate to your server files. Keep the replacement and original copies available until the result is verified.
- Check what survived. The documented warning is significant: this route can remove the character’s inventory and Pals while leaving the world map intact. If those assets are missing, restore the untouched backup and reassess rather than deleting more files.
This method is a last resort because replacing a player file does not recreate data that was never backed up. It can get someone into the world again, but it is not equivalent to recovering the original character.
Could a Palworld update have caused this?
There is a documented dedicated-server bug fix, but it should not be treated as a universal repair. A Steam discussion dated December 23, 2024 reproduces a patch notice stating: “We have released a patch to fix a bug on the v0.4.11 dedicated servers that was causing player data to disappear.” Reports in the same discussion say that some users still experienced the problem afterward. Install the applicable update, restart the server and test only after backing up; if the character remains missing, continue with save or GUID diagnosis.

Platform compatibility information also argues against assuming that every update intentionally wipes characters. Xbox Wire reported on June 12, 2024 that the Palworld Update Preview was “fully compatible with existing saves” and added dedicated-server access for Xbox and Windows preview participants. A new-character screen after an otherwise compatible update is therefore more consistent with an identity, corruption or server-save problem than with an intended reset.
How to verify a successful recovery
Do not judge the repair solely by whether the game lets you enter the world. Use a short checklist while the save is still easy to roll back.
- The expected character name, appearance and progression are present.
- The inventory contains the items that existed in the selected backup.
- Your Pals appear in the correct storage and party locations.
- Base ownership, permissions and access to existing structures are correct.
- The map and discovered locations match the chosen snapshot.
- Other players can join without being sent to character creation.
- The server can stop and start cleanly without generating another new player record.
Once these checks pass, make a fresh dated backup of the repaired save before normal play resumes. Keep the pre-repair copies until you are certain no additional data is missing.

Most migration-related incidents are avoidable if the identity transition is planned rather than treated as a simple folder copy.
- Document the source and destination server type before moving anything: local/co-op, Windows dedicated, Linux dedicated or SteamCMD dedicated.
- Make a full backup before the migration, immediately after the destination server first writes its save, and again after a successful verification.
- Have each player join once on the destination only when you are ready to generate the temporary destination record needed for mapping.
- Keep the old save read-only while the migration is being tested.
- Do not delete the Players folder to solve a GUID problem; deletion addresses a different failure mode and can discard inventory and Pals.
- Keep a written record of which backup belongs to which server version and date.
When to contact support
Escalate when the world and player files are incomplete, the server repeatedly regenerates records, or you cannot identify the correct backup without risking permanent loss. Steam lists Pocketpair as Palworld’s developer and publisher and provides Pocketpair support contact information, including [email protected]. Include the platform, server type, migration direction, game and server version, the time the prompt first appeared, and a description of the backups you still possess. Do not send your only save copy; retain an untouched local backup while support investigates.
The safest order is consistent: stop writing, preserve the save, identify the environment, attempt rollback for local/co-op data, use GUID remapping for a server migration, and reserve player-file replacement for a backed-up corruption case. That sequence gives you the best chance of restoring the original character without sacrificing the world, inventory or Pals unnecessarily.
