To fix packet loss during a live stream, first find out whether the problem is on the broadcaster’s connection, the streaming service’s ingest path, or only a few viewers’ devices. Then test Ethernet, pause competing traffic, check VPN or security-software interference, and lower the encoder bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. A bitrate change can stabilize a stream, but it does not repair packet loss farther along the ISP or internet route.
First identify what is dropping
Packet loss is a network-path problem, but a stuttering or freezing stream does not by itself reveal where it starts. In OBS, check Statistics and the log to distinguish frames dropped because of network or connection stalls from rendering lag or encoding overload. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, updated September 30, 2024).

Also establish who is affected. If only one viewer or a small group reports buffering, investigate those viewers’ local networks and playback devices. If many viewers experience problems at the same time, investigate the broadcaster’s feed or the service path. Amazon IVS uses this distinction in its guidance; it is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a specific fault (AWS, Troubleshooting IVS Low-Latency Streaming).

Test the broadcaster’s local connection
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet. If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, run a comparable stream test over a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option for making that test. If the issue disappears, wireless interference or local Wi-Fi conditions may be involved. Ethernet cannot fix congestion or packet loss on the ISP or an upstream route.
- Pause other traffic. Temporarily stop large uploads and downloads on the streaming computer and other devices on the network. Check whether the stream’s dropped-frame count or platform metrics improve.
- Test VPN interference. If your network policy permits it, temporarily disconnect the VPN and compare results. Restore it afterward if required. A VPN can change the route to the ingest server and may make the path unstable.
- Check security and bundled network software. Security software or network utilities can interfere with a stream. Test cautiously; if disabling or adjusting one identifies a conflict, restore protection and configure an appropriate exception rather than leaving security disabled.
OBS lists wired networking, competing traffic, VPNs, security software, and ISP escalation among its troubleshooting considerations (OBS Project). Cloudflare also recommends checking the local connection in its Cloudflare Stream troubleshooting guide (Cloudflare Stream, Troubleshooting a live stream, updated July 30, 2026).

Set a bitrate the connection can sustain
A speed test shows a momentary result; it does not establish that the route can continuously carry your stream’s configured bitrate. Review encoder bitrate alongside the streaming platform’s health metrics during the actual problem. If the connection is unstable, lower the bitrate in a controlled step and observe whether transmission improves. The trade-off is lower image quality.
OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that this is mitigation rather than a repair to the underlying connection, and video quality may fall (OBS Project).

Cloudflare Stream’s figures are service-specific, not universal live-stream requirements. Its troubleshooting guide says to check upload speed and use a constant bitrate when the stream is variable; in the context described there, it calls for at least 20 Mbps upload speed and suggests reducing a bitrate above 15 Mbps to 8 Mbps or 70% of internet speed, whichever is lower (Cloudflare Stream). Do not apply those thresholds automatically to another platform or workflow.
Use the streaming service’s own health data
Cloudflare Stream: upload duration and keyframes
Cloudflare Stream’s troubleshooting charts include an upload-to-duration ratio and keyframe interval. Its guide recommends keeping the ratio below 90% and the interval as a consistent flat line between 2 and 8 seconds; it suggests starting with a 4-second interval and adjusting based on stability and latency. These are Cloudflare Stream operational recommendations, not general packet-loss thresholds (Cloudflare Stream).

Cloudflare’s setup guidance describes creator bitrates as typically well under 12 Mbps and GOP duration of 2–8 seconds. A shorter GOP can reduce latency but is less encoding-efficient; a longer GOP improves efficiency and can increase latency. Treat a GOP or keyframe change as a configuration check when service metrics point to it, not as a cure for packet loss (Cloudflare Stream, Start a live stream, updated July 30, 2026).
AWS MediaLive Link: packet recovery and error seconds
For AWS MediaLive Link input devices, compare recovered packets, not-recovered packets, and error seconds. Recovered packets were dropped in transit but repaired. A positive not-recovered count indicates loss that was not repaired; error seconds show the time affected. Repeated recovered drops can be an early warning even if viewers have not yet noticed a quality problem (AWS, Input device metrics – MediaLive).

AWS Elemental MediaConnect: SRT or Zixi contribution
For SRT or Zixi workflows through AWS Elemental MediaConnect, AWS recommends checking whether the configured minimum and maximum latency are suitable for the measured round-trip time when packets are not recovered. If latency is appropriate, investigate encoder “behind real-time” alerts and output connection errors (AWS, Troubleshooting SRT and Zixi with AWS Elemental MediaConnect).

Escalate with useful evidence
If the stream remains unstable over Ethernet at a conservative bitrate, gather evidence before changing more settings. Record the exact times of incidents, encoder logs, ingest endpoint, platform health metrics, and whether multiple viewers were affected. Share those details with the streaming provider if its ingest metrics indicate a service-side problem. If local checks do not resolve the issue, ask your ISP to investigate upload service or the route to the ingest endpoint. Network conditions between broadcaster and service—including ISP and public internet path issues—can cause instability (AWS IVS; OBS Project).

Common symptoms and what to try next
- OBS reports network-dropped frames, but rendering and encoding look normal: test Ethernet, pause other traffic, inspect VPN or security-software interference, and compare a lower bitrate.
- OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload rather than network drops: do not treat that counter as proof of packet loss; investigate the corresponding rendering or encoding bottleneck.
- Only a few viewers report buffering: ask them to test another network or playback device; broadcaster-side changes may not fix a viewer-local problem.
- Many viewers buffer at once: check the broadcaster’s stream health and the provider’s ingest or delivery status, then share timestamps and metrics with the provider.
- Lowering bitrate helps but does not eliminate the issue: keep the sustainable setting as a temporary mitigation, then continue investigating the ISP or upstream route. Reduced quality is the cost of that workaround.
- Cloudflare Stream charts show an inconsistent keyframe interval or upload-to-duration ratio at or above its guidance: check the encoder’s GOP/keyframe configuration and sustained upload capacity against Cloudflare’s service-specific recommendations.
- AWS MediaLive shows not-recovered packets or recurring error seconds: document their timing and investigate the contribution link; for SRT or Zixi, compare configured latency with measured round-trip time.
