How to Fix Overheating on a OnePlus Phone

A warm OnePlus phone is often reacting to demanding use, charging, or a hot environment rather than failing. Stop intensive activity, disconnect the charger if charging, move the phone out of direct heat, and let it cool naturally. Treat persistent heat during light use, or any battery swelling, discoloration, distortion, leakage, or other abnormal temperature as a safety issue requiring OnePlus support.

First, decide whether the heat is ordinary or dangerous

Phones produce heat when their processor, modem, display, camera, or charging system is working hard. Gaming, video calls, recording video, navigation, and using the phone while it charges can all raise the temperature. Warmth by itself does not prove a hardware fault, and the available guidance does not define a universal internal battery-temperature cutoff for every OnePlus model.

OnePlus’s 2024 safety guide gives ambient conditions instead: the phone is intended for operation from 0°C to 35°C, and charging should take place in a ventilated environment from 5°C to 35°C. These are room-temperature limits, not a promise that the battery or processor will remain below a particular internal temperature.

Situation What the published guidance establishes Immediate response
Normal room-temperature use OnePlus specifies an operating ambient range of 0°C to 35°C in its 2024 safety guide. Reduce demanding activity if the phone becomes uncomfortably hot and allow it to cool.
Charging OnePlus specifies a 5°C to 35°C ambient charging range and recommends ventilation and approved charging equipment. Unplug if the phone becomes excessively hot, move it to a ventilated place, and reassess the charger, cable, and conditions.
Abnormal battery signs OnePlus identifies abnormal high temperature, discoloration, distortion, and leakage as reasons to stop using the device and contact customer support. Stop using and charging it. Do not open, bend, puncture, modify, or repair the battery yourself.

What to do immediately when your OnePlus phone is hot

  1. Stop the activity that is generating load. End a game, video call, recording session, navigation session, or other demanding task. If the phone is charging, disconnect it.
  2. Remove environmental heat. Move the phone out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, hot cars, cooking appliances, or other heat sources. Place it on a hard, open surface where air can circulate.
  3. Let it cool on its own. Do not resume charging or heavy use until the device feels normal again. Do not place it in a refrigerator or use an external cooling source; the cited OnePlus guidance supports stopping use, ventilation, and cooling naturally, not rapid external chilling.
  4. Check for physical warning signs. Look for a distorted back cover, discoloration, leaking material, or a temperature that remains abnormally high after use has stopped. If any appears, keep the phone switched off and contact OnePlus customer support.

Avoid repeatedly turning a hot device on and off to test it. One cooling period followed by a controlled check is safer and gives you clearer information about the trigger.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Find the pattern before changing settings

The timing of the heat is more useful than a generic “overheating” label. For one or two incidents, note what the phone was doing, whether it was charging, the surrounding conditions, recent software or app changes, and how quickly the battery level fell. This record helps distinguish a temporary workload from a recurring fault without assuming a particular model or OxygenOS version.

Also note whether the heat is concentrated near the camera, screen, back, or charging port, and whether a warning appears. Do not press on a swollen area or remove the back cover to investigate. Your observations are for support, not a substitute for a repair inspection.

Heat during gaming, video, navigation, or calls

High-load activities keep the processor, graphics hardware, screen, cameras, and wireless radios busy. OnePlus Community’s general overheating advice specifically lists gaming, video calls, and video recording as contributors, as well as using the phone while it charges. Stop the demanding task, remove the phone from direct heat, and wait for it to cool before trying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you resume, shorten the session and avoid charging at the same time. If the phone becomes hot quickly even during brief, light tasks, record the circumstances rather than repeatedly pushing it until it heats up.

Heat only while charging

Charging adds electrical work to whatever the phone is already doing. A phone that is comfortable when idle but becomes very hot as soon as charging starts deserves a charging-specific check:

  • Charge in a ventilated location within OnePlus’s published ambient charging range.
  • Use the original charger and cable supplied for the phone, or a manufacturer-approved charger and cable confirmed as compatible with the exact model.
  • Do not use a damaged cable, loose connector, or visibly damaged power adapter.
  • Do not continue charging through an abnormal-temperature warning or while the device is showing physical battery damage.

OnePlus Support also advises charging at 5°C to 35°C, using its original charger, and avoiding third-party chargers and USB charging in the cited support answer. Compatibility is model-specific, so there is no single charger recommendation that can safely be applied to every OnePlus phone. See OnePlus Support’s battery guidance for the manufacturer’s general advice.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How to compare a replacement charger

If charging is the only trigger, compare a replacement on three points rather than on a wattage claim alone. First, confirm compatibility with the exact OnePlus model. Second, choose the original unit or one that OnePlus identifies as manufacturer-approved. Third, verify that the heat disappears or improves when the phone is charged without other heavy activity. A charger that meets those checks is a sensible troubleshooting step, but it cannot explain heat that also occurs while idle or in sunlight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heat in sunlight or a hot room

A phone can heat up even when no demanding app is open if the surrounding air or a nearby surface is hot. Direct sunlight can also warm the display and back of the device. Move it into shade or a cooler indoor location, remove any insulating covering that is trapping heat, and allow air to circulate. Do not continue charging in a hot car or on a surface that itself is warm.

Heat after an update or app change

If the problem began after a system update, a newly installed app, or a change in usage, write down the date and what changed. The available OnePlus search result exposes a “Heating/Battery drains” support category, but not its model-specific steps. Because menu names and fixes can vary by phone and OxygenOS version, use the official support route for the exact model rather than applying an unverified setting or diagnostic code.

Heat while the phone is idle

Persistent warmth when the screen is off and the phone is not charging is more concerning than heat during a known heavy workload. Check whether the battery is also draining unusually fast, note wireless signal conditions and recent changes, and arrange support if the pattern repeats. Do not infer a failed battery from one warm episode; look for recurrence under light use and document it.

How to prevent overheating during everyday use

Separate charging from heavy workloads

Do not game, record long videos, or hold extended video calls while charging if the phone is already warm. Let it cool first, then charge in a ventilated location. This removes two simultaneous sources of heat and makes it easier to identify whether the charger or the workload is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control the environment

  • Keep the phone out of direct sun and away from heaters and other hot surfaces.
  • Do not leave it in a parked car or enclosed space that can exceed the specified ambient range.
  • Use an open, hard surface while charging so air can move around the phone.
  • Stop using it if the surrounding temperature is outside OnePlus’s published operating or charging guidance.

Use compatible charging equipment

Manufacturer-approved equipment is a safety requirement, not a guarantee that every charging problem disappears. Verify the exact OnePlus model before replacing a charger or cable. A compatible charger cannot explain heat that occurs during idle use, in direct sunlight, or during a particular app workload, so do not buy accessories as a universal remedy.

Watch the battery behavior, not just the surface temperature

Google Android Help notes that a hot battery drains faster and that heat-related drain can damage the battery. This is Android-wide guidance, not a diagnosis for a particular OnePlus model. A combination of unusual warmth and rapid drain is a reason to reduce use and seek model-specific help, especially if it repeats.

Read the Android guidance at Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.

A step-by-step troubleshooting flow

  1. Record the trigger. Write down whether the phone was charging, gaming, recording, navigating, on a video call, recently updated, in sunlight, or idle. Note the battery percentage and how quickly it changed.
  2. Stop and cool. End demanding activity, unplug the charger, move the phone out of direct heat, and let it return to a comfortable temperature naturally.
  3. Repeat under controlled conditions. After cooling, use the phone briefly in a normal indoor environment without charging. If it stays cool, the original workload or environment is the likely trigger.
  4. Test charging separately. Charge in ventilation using the original or manufacturer-approved, model-compatible charger and cable. Do not perform a demanding task at the same time. Unplug if the device becomes abnormally hot.
  5. Check recurrence during light use. If heat returns with the screen mostly idle, during simple tasks, or without charging, preserve your notes and contact official OnePlus support for the exact model and OxygenOS version.
  6. Escalate immediately for battery damage. Stop using the phone and contact customer support if it is abnormally hot or shows discoloration, distortion, or leakage.

When overheating means you should stop using the phone

OnePlus’s safety guidance calls for discontinuing use and contacting customer support when the battery has an abnormal high temperature, discoloration, distortion, or leakage. These signs can indicate physical battery damage; they are not problems to solve by changing an app setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not open the phone or attempt battery disassembly.
  • Do not bend, puncture, squeeze, modify, or replace the battery yourself.
  • Do not keep charging a device that is abnormally hot or physically damaged.
  • Keep the device away from combustible materials while waiting for support, and follow the support team’s instructions for handling and service.

If the phone has been dropped, crushed, exposed to liquid, or otherwise damaged and then starts heating, mention that history when you contact OnePlus. The published safety guide does not provide a universal home repair procedure, so do not improvise one.

What support can and cannot diagnose remotely

Support needs the precise model, OxygenOS version, charger and cable used, when the heat occurs, and whether the battery drains unusually fast. Include your written timeline and any warning message or physical change. The exact settings, diagnostic menus, known software issues, and repair options are model-specific; the available OnePlus search result does not expose enough detail to prescribe a universal menu path.

Before contacting support, gather the purchase or service details if available, identify whether the charger is original, and describe the ambient conditions. Say whether unplugging stops the heat, whether the phone warms while idle, and whether the back cover or frame has changed shape. This prevents a generic charger recommendation from being applied to a possible battery-safety case.

Common mistakes that make heat worse

  • Continuing a demanding task to see how hot it gets: this adds load after the warning signs have appeared.
  • Charging in direct sunlight or an enclosed vehicle: the surrounding temperature can exceed the manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Using an unverified third-party charger: approval and compatibility are model-specific; a high-wattage label alone does not establish suitability.
  • Cooling the phone rapidly in a refrigerator: the cited guidance recommends stopping use and allowing natural cooling, not external chilling.
  • Opening the phone to inspect the battery: OnePlus explicitly advises against battery disassembly, modification, and repair by the user.
  • Assuming every warm phone has the same cause: workload, charging, environment, software changes, and hardware damage require different next steps.

Key points to remember

Start with context: identify what the phone was doing and where it was. Stop heavy use and charging when it becomes too hot, move it away from direct heat, and let it cool naturally. Charge only in ventilation and within OnePlus’s stated ambient charging conditions, using equipment approved and compatible with the exact model. Repeated heat during light use or idle operation needs an official diagnosis. Abnormal temperature, discoloration, distortion, or leakage means stop using the device and contact OnePlus support without attempting a battery repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my OnePlus phone overheating?

Common contributors identified by OnePlus include gaming, video calls, video recording, using the phone while charging, direct sunlight, and other hot surroundings. Stop the workload, unplug the phone if necessary, and let it cool. Heat that recurs during light use or while idle needs model-specific support rather than a universal setting change.

How do I stop my OnePlus phone from overheating while charging?

Unplug it if it is excessively hot, move it to a ventilated location, and keep the ambient temperature between 5°C and 35°C. Use the original or a manufacturer-approved charger and cable compatible with your exact model. Do not charge while gaming or recording, and do not continue if there is an abnormal-temperature warning or physical battery damage.

What temperature is safe for a OnePlus phone?

OnePlus’s 2024 safety guide specifies an ambient operating range of 0°C to 35°C. For charging, it specifies 5°C to 35°C. These are surrounding-air conditions, not a universal internal battery-temperature limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I put a hot OnePlus phone in the refrigerator?

No. Stop using and charging it, move it away from sunlight and other heat sources, and allow it to cool naturally on an open, hard surface. The cited OnePlus guidance does not support rapid external chilling.

Can a third-party charger cause overheating?

Compatibility is model-specific. OnePlus advises using its original charger and, in its safety guidance, manufacturer-approved chargers and cables. Avoid an unverified or damaged charger, and do not assume a high-wattage label proves suitability.

Why is my OnePlus phone hot when I am not using it?

Record whether it is charging, whether the battery is draining unusually fast, recent app or system changes, and the surrounding conditions. If warmth returns while the phone is idle or doing only light tasks, contact official OnePlus support for the exact model and OxygenOS version.

What battery symptoms require immediate support?

Stop using and charging the phone and contact OnePlus customer support for abnormal high temperature, discoloration, distortion, or leakage. Do not open, puncture, bend, modify, or attempt to repair the battery.
