Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen Outlook will not open, hangs on “Processing” or “Loading Profile,” or sends mail but cannot receive it, start with updates and a Safe Mode test. Those low-risk checks separate add-in and desktop problems from account or service failures. Then reset the navigation pane, create a fresh Outlook profile, repair any damaged PST or OST data file, and repair Microsoft 365 or Office if necessary.
First, identify what is actually failing
“Outlook not working” can describe several different faults. The quickest fix depends on whether the application fails to start, opens but freezes, or opens normally while mail synchronization fails.

- It will not open: Outlook may be blocked by an add-in, a damaged navigation layout, a corrupt profile, a damaged data file, or broken Office program files.
- It is stuck on “Processing” or “Loading Profile”: the startup sequence is usually waiting on an add-in, profile component, local data file, or account connection.
- It opens in Safe Mode but not normally: an add-in is the leading suspect because Safe Mode starts classic Outlook without add-ins.
- You can send but cannot receive: check the account and service separately from the Windows application. Outlook on the web is a useful comparison.
- Only new Outlook or only classic Outlook fails: the two Windows editions use different add-in and profile behavior, so use commands intended for the edition you have installed.
Before changing anything, note the exact symptom and whether Outlook on the web works in your browser. If web Outlook works while the desktop app does not, the account and service are less likely to be the immediate cause. If web Outlook also fails, investigate the account, authentication, mailbox, or service status rather than repeatedly repairing the desktop client.
1. Install updates and clear a stuck Office process
Microsoft’s support sequence starts with updates because current Windows and Microsoft 365 or Office files can replace outdated components and address security and reliability defects.

- Save your work in every application.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install all offered updates. Restart when Windows requests it.
- Open an Office application such as Word, then choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now when that menu is available. If your organization manages updates, follow its update policy instead.
- After restarting, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, select any duplicate or unresponsive Outlook and Office processes, then choose End task. Do not terminate unrelated Windows processes.
- Start Outlook once more and record whether the message changed.
If the application still fails, do not repeatedly click the Outlook icon. Continue with the least destructive diagnostic: Safe Mode.
2. Test classic Outlook in Safe Mode
Safe Mode launches classic Outlook without add-ins. Microsoft notes that “Sometimes add-ins can conflict with classic Outlook for Windows.” This test does not repair anything; it isolates one common cause.
- Close Outlook. If it appears frozen, end its process in Task Manager first.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
outlook.exe /safeand press Enter. If Windows cannot find the command, browse to the Outlook installation or use the Start-menu shortcut to locate classic Outlook. - If Outlook opens, try the action that previously failed, such as opening the Inbox or sending and receiving mail.
If Safe Mode works
An add-in or an add-in interaction is the most likely explanation. Disable COM add-ins, then enable them individually so you can identify the one that restores the failure.
- In Outlook, open File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom beside Manage, choose COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear every selected add-in and choose OK. Close and reopen Outlook normally.
- If normal startup succeeds, return to the same screen and enable one add-in.
- Restart Outlook after each change. When the hang or crash returns, the last enabled add-in is the leading suspect. Leave it disabled, update it from its publisher, or contact the publisher for a compatible version.
Do not assume that an add-in is safe to remove simply because it is listed. Record its name and purpose first, especially if your workplace relies on a security, archiving, accessibility, or document-management extension.
If Safe Mode also fails
Safe Mode rules out ordinary add-ins but does not rule out a damaged navigation pane, profile, data file, Office installation, account, or Windows problem. Proceed in that order rather than deleting files at random.

3. Reset the Outlook navigation pane
A damaged or inconsistent folder and navigation layout can prevent classic Outlook from starting correctly. Resetting it removes local navigation-pane customizations; it does not delete your mailbox.
- Close Outlook completely.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
Outlook.exe /resetnavpaneand press Enter. - Wait for Outlook to rebuild the navigation pane, then test the Inbox and another folder.
If the reset changes nothing, move to a new profile. A navigation reset is comparatively reversible; profile removal is not.
4. Create a new Outlook profile without losing local data
An Outlook profile stores account configuration and references to local data. If the profile is corrupt, a new one can restore startup and synchronization without changing the mailbox on the server.
Protect data before removing anything
Microsoft warns that removing a profile deletes offline cached content associated with it. Before you remove the old profile, identify and preserve any local-only material, including unsent drafts, archived messages, contacts, calendars, or PST files that are not stored in the mailbox.
- Keep a copy of every PST file in a separate, known folder or backup location.
- Check the Outbox and Drafts folders for messages that have not synchronized.
- Confirm that important folders are visible in Outlook on the web or another trusted device before deleting the old profile.
- If the computer is managed by an employer, ask the administrator about retention and archive policies before moving data files.
Create and test the profile
- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel, search for Mail, and open the Mail setup item. The wording can include Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
- Choose Show Profiles, then Add.
- Give the profile a distinct name and add the account using the normal sign-in and verification prompts.
- Under When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile, select Always use this profile and choose the new profile, or select Prompt for a profile to be used while testing.
- Start classic Outlook with the new profile and allow initial synchronization to finish. Test opening folders, sending a message, and receiving a reply.
Interpret the result
If the new profile works, the original profile was the source of the desktop problem. Keep the old profile until you have verified that all required local data is preserved. Only then return to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles and remove the obsolete profile if you no longer need it.

If the new profile fails in the same way, the profile was not the root cause. Continue to the data-file check and Office repair instead of creating repeated profiles.
5. Repair a damaged PST or OST data file
Outlook can become unresponsive or fail during startup when its local data file is damaged. Classic Outlook includes the Inbox Repair Tool, scanpst.exe, for checking and repairing PST or OST files.
Find the correct file
Do not guess which file to repair. In classic Outlook, open File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select the Data Files tab, and note the path associated with the affected account or archive. Close Outlook before running the repair.
Run Inbox Repair Tool
- Exit Outlook and confirm in Task Manager that no Outlook process remains.
- Locate
scanpst.exein the Microsoft Office installation. Its folder varies by Office edition and installation type; searching the Office folders for the exact filename is safer than using a guessed path. - Run
scanpst.exeand browse to the PST or OST path you recorded. - Choose Start to scan the file.
- If errors are reported, select Repair. Keep the option to create a backup before repairing, and retain that backup until Outlook has been tested thoroughly.
- Open Outlook and check the folders, send/receive behavior, and message counts.
A repair may correct structural errors but cannot recover information that was never present in the file. If the file is on a network share or removable drive, move it to a supported local location only according to your organization’s policy; do not make multiple copies and then lose track of which one Outlook uses.
6. Repair the Microsoft 365 or Office installation
When updates, Safe Mode, the navigation reset, a new profile, and data-file repair do not solve the problem, the installed program files may be damaged. Repair the installation rather than uninstalling it immediately.

- Close all Office applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or the equivalent installed-apps list in Windows 10. Locate Microsoft 365 or your Office edition.
- Choose the app’s menu, select Modify, and approve the administrator prompt. On some installations, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Office, and choose Change.
- Run Quick Repair first. Restart Windows when prompted and test Outlook.
- If the failure remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. This is a more extensive repair and may require a reliable internet connection and renewed sign-in.
- Restart and test both normal startup and, if relevant, Safe Mode.
Repairing Office can change or restore program components; it is different from repairing a PST or OST. Do not skip the data-file backup simply because an Office repair is planned.
7. Troubleshoot “can send but cannot receive”
This symptom needs a synchronization check, not only a startup repair.
- Open Outlook on the web in a browser and check whether new messages arrive there.
- In desktop Outlook, choose Send/Receive > Send/Receive All Folders and note any error code or authentication prompt.
- Check that Outlook is not in Work Offline mode. The status bar and the Send/Receive menu indicate whether offline mode is active.
- Inspect the mailbox’s storage quota and rules. A full mailbox, a rule that moves messages, or a forwarding configuration can make mail appear to be missing.
- Look in Junk Email, Other, Archive, and any focused or filtered view.
- If web Outlook also cannot receive mail, verify the account credentials, multi-factor authentication, mailbox status, and service availability with the account provider or administrator.
- If web Outlook receives mail but the desktop client does not, create the new profile described above after preserving local data.
Never remove an account or profile merely to clear a temporary server outage. First establish whether the mailbox works outside the desktop application.
8. New Outlook and classic Outlook require different checks
Windows can show both the newer Outlook app and classic Outlook. The commands outlook.exe /safe, Outlook.exe /resetnavpane, COM Add-ins, Control Panel profiles, and scanpst.exe apply to classic Outlook. The newer app has different account, add-in, and local-data behavior, so those classic commands may not apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Safe Mode delete my Outlook account or messages?
No. Safe Mode starts classic Outlook without add-ins. It is a diagnostic launch and does not remove your account or mailbox data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I delete my old Outlook profile immediately after creating a new one?
No. Keep it until you have protected local-only data and confirmed that the new profile contains everything you need. Removing a profile deletes its offline cached content.
Does scanpst.exe repair a Microsoft 365 mailbox on the server?
No. It checks and repairs the selected local PST or OST file. Server-side account or service failures must be handled through the account provider or administrator.
Why does Outlook on the web work when the desktop app does not?
Web Outlook bypasses the desktop installation, local profile, add-ins, and local data files. That contrast points toward a Windows or desktop-client problem, although authentication and policy can still affect both.
