When Outlook will not open, first identify whether you use classic Outlook or the new Outlook for Windows. In classic Outlook, run outlook.exe /safe: if it opens, an add-in is the likely blocker. If Safe Mode also fails, test a new profile, repair the PST or OST data file, reset the navigation pane, and then repair Microsoft 365 or Office. For new Outlook, end the stuck task in Task Manager and install available Windows and Microsoft 365 updates. Work through the steps in that order so you test the least disruptive cause before changing profiles or repairing files.
Identify which Outlook will not launch
Microsoft maintains two Windows Outlook applications with different recovery paths. Classic Outlook is the traditional desktop program with the ribbon, COM add-ins, PST or OST data files, and the familiar File menu. New Outlook for Windows is the newer application with a different interface and process. If you are unsure, try the Safe Mode command in the next section: outlook.exe /safe applies to classic Outlook. If Windows cannot find that command or your installed app is the new Outlook, use the new-Outlook procedure instead.

Do not repeatedly click the Outlook icon while it is stuck. Multiple launch attempts can leave several processes running and make it harder to tell whether a repair worked. Close any visible Outlook window, then follow the branch that matches your edition.
Choose the least disruptive test first
| Situation | Next action | What it tests or changes | Local-data risk | Disruption |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Outlook; Safe Mode opens | Disable and isolate COM add-ins | Tests whether an add-in blocks startup | None to mail data | Low |
| Classic Outlook; Safe Mode does not open | Create and test a new profile | Tests for a damaged Outlook profile | Do not remove the old profile before backing up data files; offline cached content can be deleted | Moderate |
| Classic Outlook; profile test does not resolve it | Run scanpst.exe |
Repairs a damaged PST or OST file | Work on a copy or preserve a backup first | Moderate |
| Classic Outlook; navigation behaves abnormally | Run Outlook.exe /resetnavpane |
Removes navigation-pane customizations | Mail data remains, but custom navigation settings are cleared | Low |
| Either edition; installation files may be damaged | Office Quick Repair, then Online Repair | Repairs Microsoft 365 or Office files | Repair can change Office components and settings | Moderate to high |
| New Outlook; process is frozen | End Microsoft Outlook in Task Manager | Stops the stuck application process | Unsaved work in that process is lost | Low |
Fix classic Outlook that will not open
1. Start classic Outlook in Safe Mode
- Close every Outlook window. If it appears frozen, wait briefly and then continue with the Run command.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
outlook.exe /safeand select OK. - If Outlook asks which profile to use, accept the default profile.
Safe Mode loads Outlook without add-ins. Microsoft notes that “Sometimes add-ins can conflict with Outlook.” This is a diagnostic start, not a permanent operating mode: your mail, calendar and other data should appear, but extensions that normally integrate with Outlook are not loaded.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
If Safe Mode opens, do not immediately re-enable everything. Leave Outlook open long enough to confirm that folders and messages load, then continue with add-in isolation. If Safe Mode fails with the same startup error, skip to the new-profile test.
2. Isolate the add-in that blocks startup
- In the Safe Mode window, choose File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom next to Manage, select COM Add-ins, then choose Go.
- Clear every add-in checkbox and select OK.
- Close Outlook and start it normally.
- If normal startup works, return to the same COM Add-ins list and enable one add-in at a time. Restart Outlook after each change.
- When the failure returns, clear the checkbox for the add-in you just enabled. Leave it disabled; do not delete it.
Enabling one extension per restart identifies the offending component without changing your mail profile. If Outlook still fails after all COM add-ins are disabled, the add-ins are not the only cause; proceed to a profile test.
3. Create and test a new Outlook profile
A profile stores account configuration and references to Outlook data. A new profile is a controlled test: it does not repair the old profile, but it shows whether the old configuration is damaged.

- Open the Outlook profile-management screen (from the Windows Mail control-panel applet or the profile picker used by your Outlook installation).
- Create a new profile and add the same account or accounts.
- Set Outlook to ask which profile to use at startup, or select the new profile as the default for the test.
- Start Outlook with the new profile and wait for folders to load.
If the new profile opens normally, the original profile is likely corrupt. Keep the old profile until you have confirmed that all required mail, calendar data, contacts and account settings are available. Microsoft warns that removing a profile deletes offline cached content associated with it. Back up relevant PST files and any other local data files before removing an old profile. A new profile may need time to rebuild server-synchronized content, so do not judge it while synchronization is still in progress.

If the new profile fails in the same way, the problem is less likely to be limited to one profile. Continue with data-file repair and Office repair rather than repeatedly creating profiles.
4. Repair a damaged PST or OST with Inbox Repair Tool
Classic Outlook can fail during startup when its local data file is damaged. Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool is scanpst.exe. It checks and repairs the PST or OST file used by the affected profile.
- Exit Outlook. Confirm that Outlook is not still listed as a running process before scanning.
- Locate and run
scanpst.exefrom your installed Office or Microsoft 365 folder. - Use the tool’s file picker to select the PST or OST associated with the profile that will not start.
- Run the scan and review the result. If the tool offers to create a backup before repair, keep that backup.
- Start Outlook and test the repaired profile.
Run the tool against the relevant file, not an arbitrary data file. If you have more than one account or archive, identify which file the failing profile uses. A repair can change the local file, so retaining a backup gives you a recovery point if expected folders or messages are missing afterward.

5. Reset the navigation pane
Corrupt navigation-pane customizations can prevent classic Outlook from completing startup. Resetting them removes those customizations; it does not erase your mailbox or repair a PST.
Rank #3
- Close Outlook.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
Outlook.exe /resetnavpane. - Select OK and allow Outlook to start.
Microsoft advises running this command on each computer where the issue occurs. Expect navigation-pane customizations to be cleared, so you may need to arrange favorites or shortcuts again. If the command does not change the launch behavior, continue to Office repair.
6. Repair the Microsoft 365 or Office installation
Use Office repair when Outlook files or the underlying Office installation may be damaged, or when Safe Mode, a new profile, data-file repair and the navigation reset have not solved the launch failure.
- Open Windows settings or the installed-apps control panel used by your Windows version.
- Select your Microsoft 365 or Office installation and choose its Modify or Change option.
- Choose Quick Repair first and start the repair.
- Restart Windows if the repair process requests it, then test Outlook.
- If Quick Repair does not resolve the problem, repeat the process and choose Online Repair.
Quick Repair is the shorter first attempt. Online Repair is the more extensive option and can replace Office components, so save work and close Office applications before starting it. Test Outlook after each repair rather than running both at once; that tells you which level was sufficient.
Fix new Outlook for Windows
End the stuck Outlook task
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- In the process list, select Microsoft Outlook.
- Choose End task and confirm that the process closes.
- Wait a few seconds, then launch new Outlook again from the Start menu or taskbar.
Ending the task discards unsaved work in the frozen process, but it does not remove your account. If Outlook immediately hangs again, do not keep ending the task indefinitely; install available updates before testing another launch.

Install Windows and Microsoft 365 updates
Open Windows Update and the update controls for your Microsoft 365 or Office installation, then install all available updates and restart Windows. Microsoft says updates can replace outdated files and fix vulnerabilities. This step is particularly important when a launch failure began after another Office, Windows or Teams update, because a later build may contain the correction.
After restarting, launch new Outlook once and wait for its initial synchronization to finish. If it still will not open, use Microsoft’s current troubleshooting flow for new Outlook rather than applying classic-Outlook commands such as scanpst.exe or /resetnavpane to the wrong application.
Check the March 2026 Teams Meeting add-in issue
Microsoft reported a specific classic-Outlook problem beginning around March 12, 2026: Outlook could crash and then prompt to start in Safe Mode because of the Microsoft Teams Meeting add-in. This explanation applies only if your timing and symptoms match that report; it is not a general cause of every Outlook launch failure.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If classic Outlook opens in Safe Mode and the Teams Meeting add-in is installed, open the COM Add-ins list described above and disable that add-in. Then test normal startup. Microsoft also lists Office Online Repair as a workaround. Check the installed Teams and Office build numbers before relying on this explanation. Microsoft says a fix is included in Teams version 26058.712.4527.9297, with deployment beginning March 30, 2026. Rollout timing can vary, so an installation that has not received that build may still require the temporary add-in disablement or Online Repair.

Use the symptoms to choose your next step
Outlook opens only with /safe
Treat this as an add-in isolation problem. Disable all COM add-ins, confirm a normal launch, and re-enable them individually. Do not remove the profile or run a data-file repair first unless Outlook continues failing with every add-in disabled.
Safe Mode and normal mode both fail
Test a new profile. If the new profile works, preserve local data and migrate carefully. If it also fails, run scanpst.exe against the relevant PST or OST, then reset the navigation pane and repair Office if necessary.
The error says “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook Window”
This wording does not identify one universal cause. Follow the same branch: Safe Mode for classic Outlook, then add-ins; a new profile if Safe Mode fails; data-file repair and navigation reset afterward; and Office repair when installation files may be damaged. Avoid assuming that the message itself proves a corrupt profile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOutlook starts and then closes
Use the Safe Mode test for classic Outlook because an add-in can load after the initial window appears. If the crash follows a recent Teams or Office change, compare installed builds and apply the March 2026 Teams guidance where it fits. For new Outlook, end the task and install updates.
A new profile opens but old mail appears missing
Do not remove the old profile or delete any data file. The new profile may still be synchronizing server content, while locally cached or archive data may exist only in the old profile’s PST or OST. Keep backups and verify the folders and account data you need before making the old configuration permanent.
What each repair changes
| Action | Configuration affected | When to use it | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe Mode | Temporarily omits add-ins | First test for classic Outlook | It is diagnostic, not a permanent fix |
| Disable COM add-in | One extension at a time | Safe Mode works | Disable the culprit; do not delete it |
| New profile | Account and profile configuration | Safe Mode fails | Back up data before removing the old profile |
scanpst.exe |
Selected PST or OST file | Data-file damage is suspected | Close Outlook and preserve a backup |
/resetnavpane |
Navigation-pane customizations | Navigation state may block startup | Custom shortcuts and favorites are cleared |
| Quick Repair | Office components | First installation repair attempt | Close Office apps and restart if asked |
| Online Repair | More extensive Office replacement | Quick Repair fails | Expect greater disruption to the Office installation |
| End task and update | New Outlook process and installed files | New Outlook is frozen or outdated | Unsaved work in the ended process is lost |
After Outlook opens again
- Restart Outlook normally once more to confirm the fix survives a clean launch.
- Open several mail folders, the calendar and contacts, and verify that the account is synchronizing.
- If you created a new profile, confirm that required archives and local PST files are connected before retiring the old profile.
- If an add-in caused the failure, keep it disabled until its vendor provides a compatible update. Re-enable it only as a deliberate test.
- If Office repair solved the problem, install pending Windows, Office and Teams updates so the repaired files are not immediately replaced by an outdated build.
If none of these branches changes the behavior, record the Outlook edition, the exact error text, whether Safe Mode opens, the profile used, and the Office, Windows and Teams build numbers. Those details distinguish an add-in conflict from profile, data-file, installation or version-specific failures when you contact your organization’s administrator or Microsoft support.
