ORA-00257 means Oracle’s archiver failed while trying to archive a redo log. A full destination device is the most likely cause, but a failed archive destination marked MANDATORY can also trigger the error. Check the alert log and relevant trace files first: they identify the actual failure and help you avoid deleting recovery files or restarting the wrong component.
What ORA-00257 means—and why to act promptly
The error indicates that an archive operation failed; by itself, it does not say which destination or resource caused the failure. Oracle warns that if the problem is not resolved soon, the database will stop executing transactions. Treat it as an operational issue to diagnose promptly, not as proof that a particular disk is full.

Oracle’s documented likely cause is that the destination device has run out of space. Another possibility is that an archive destination configured as MANDATORY has failed. The accompanying error details determine which possibility applies.
Read the alert log and trace files first
Oracle recommends checking the database alert log and trace files for the detailed error before taking corrective action. Look for the underlying message that identifies the archive destination or resource involved. Do not infer the failed path from ORA-00257 alone.

- If the detail points to a destination device, check that it has available space and is accessible to the database.
- If the named destination is marked
MANDATORY, investigate that destination’s failure even if capacity is available. - If the detail points elsewhere, follow that error rather than assuming the FRA or a particular filesystem is responsible.
Check whether the Fast Recovery Area is full
A full Fast Recovery Area (FRA) is one documented cause of a stuck archiver. This is a possible branch of diagnosis, not a universal explanation for ORA-00257; use the alert-log and trace details to establish whether it fits your database.
Oracle’s Base Database cloud troubleshooting guide describes this status check:
srvctl status database -db <db_unique_name> -v
In that documented context, the output can identify a Stuck Archiver state. This command and interpretation are scoped to the guide’s Base Database context; they are not a universal status check for every Oracle deployment. Use the status tools appropriate to your platform and configuration.

Free space only after confirming what is safe to remove
Once you have identified the failed destination or resource, correct that specific problem. If space is exhausted, archive-log cleanup must follow your organization’s backup retention and recovery requirements. A log that looks old may still be needed for recovery or may not yet be protected by a usable backup.
The Oracle references cited here do not prescribe a universal archive-log deletion command. Do not delete files directly or run a generic cleanup command based only on ORA-00257. Use the runbook for your Oracle release and deployment, and confirm that any logs selected for removal are safe under your backup and recovery policy. If the issue is an inaccessible or failed MANDATORY destination, freeing space elsewhere will not by itself fix it.
Confirm recovery and archiver status
After correcting the underlying destination or resource problem, use the status and recovery procedures appropriate to your platform to confirm that archiving is working again. Oracle’s Base Database troubleshooting guide notes that its reported status may not update after the underlying issue is corrected and discusses restart workarounds in that platform context. Follow that guide only when it applies; ORA-00257 alone does not establish a universal archiver-restart command.
In the same Base Database context, Oracle says the stuck-archiver issue must be resolved before backups can succeed. Verify the condition is cleared before relying on a backup operation.
When to involve an Oracle DBA
If you cannot determine which destination failed, whether it is MANDATORY, or which archive logs are safe to remove, pause cleanup and involve a qualified Oracle DBA or your organization’s database support team. Those decisions depend on the actual database configuration and recovery policy; a generic deletion or restart instruction cannot safely substitute for them.
